McCain blasts Obama, Democrats for Fannie Mae meltdown

We asked John McCain to take off the gloves — and he listened. In remarks McCain will deliver today, he blasts Democrats, including Barack Obama, for their market manipulations and defense of Fannie Mae against regulator warnings. He accuses all of them of encouraging corruption (emphases mine):
Our current economic crisis is a good case in point. What was his actual record in the years before the great economic crisis of our lifetimes?
This crisis started in our housing market in the form of subprime loans that were pushed on people who could not afford them. Bad mortgages were being backed by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and it was only a matter of time before a contagion of unsustainable debt began to spread. This corruption was encouraged by Democrats in Congress, and abetted by Senator Obama.
Senator Obama has accused me of opposing regulation to avert this crisis. I guess he believes if a lie is big enough and repeated often enough it will be believed. But the truth is I was the one who called at the time for tighter restrictions on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac that could have helped prevent this crisis from happening in the first place.
Senator Obama was silent on the regulation of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and his Democratic allies in Congress opposed every effort to rein them in. As recently as September of last year he said that subprime loans had been, quote, “a good idea.” Well, Senator Obama, that “good idea” has now plunged this country into the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression.
To hear him talk now, you’d think he’d always opposed the dangerous practices at these institutions. But there is absolutely nothing in his record to suggest he did. He was surely familiar with the people who were creating this problem. The executives of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have advised him, and he has taken their money for his campaign. He has received more money from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac than any other senator in history, with the exception of the chairman of the committee overseeing them.
Did he ever talk to the executives at Fannie and Freddie about these reckless loans? Did he ever discuss with them the stronger oversight I proposed? If Senator Obama is such a champion of financial regulation, why didn’t he support these regulations that could have prevented this crisis in the first place? He won’t tell you, but you deserve an answer.
This is exactly what McCain must do to correct the record on this fiasco. Not only has Obama misrepresented this as a crisis of deregulation, but the record shows that Democrats like Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, Gregory Meeks, Lacy Gray, and others opposed the regulators we already had when they tried to blow the whistle. As late as this summer, Democrats kept trying to tell the American voters that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were stable, when in fact they were collapsing.
More, please. Let’s see quotes from Democrats in ads, along with the bill for their social engineering. We need this for bigger reasons than a presidential election: we need to make sure it doesn’t happen again.
Update: Moe Lane at Red State has more thoughts, as does Jim Geraghty.

He needs to be consistent and hammer Obama on everything. He should’ve been doing it all along instead of waiting to force the media to defend his background when it was apparent that he wouldn’t.
.
The whining libs already under his hypnotic spell are too far gone. But he needs to plant the seed of doubt into all the independents and undecideds.
.
We just cannot afford to have a radical musslim sympathizer win this election…

READ THE WHOLE SPEECH!!!!!!!!!!!
McCain is not just going after Fannie and Freddie. He is demolishing the whole construct that anyone who questions Obama’s record or his background is lying or somehow out of bounds. And he is tying on Obama’s non-record on Fannie and Freddie to his non-record on everything else. It’s a damn good speech and I hope he uses it from now until Election Day.
“I don’t need any lessons on telling the truth to the American people. And if I did need any instruction in that regard, I would not ask for it from a Chicago politician!”

Haysoos Marimba, Mac seems to be pulling a ‘Flight of the Intruder’; right down on the deck, flying into the teeth of the flak and heading for downtown.
Obicky is probably shitting his underoos right about now, considering his careful debate prep just went out the window. Mac looks as if he is going to start naming names, including Obarfy, which will put him on the defensive for the entire debate.

Unless he gets this type message out in the next two debates and makes it very, very concise, understandable & clear, plus gets Obama into a “uh…uh…uh” reaction it is too late.
McCain must make people must see that:
a) the Democrats were behind this financial mess,
b) Obama was the one who was part of it (his statements, the FM & FM connections, his lack of action),
c) that Obama lied about McCain and
d) McCain tried to stop this mess, but was thwarted by the Democrats.
The next townhall debate should be the first opportunity.
McCain only has the chance of getting this message across to public directly via the debates. (The press has not and will not help.)
In the debates McCain needs to do a maverick on Obama and ignore any question other than hammering this on Obama.
Difficult to do, but it has to be done.
albill on October 6, 2008 at 3:00 PM
All of McCain’s (seemingly pointless) crowing about reform, earmarks, “I’ll make them famous”, etc, actually lays a pretty good foundation for these recent attacks. He looks less like a mudslinger and more like the reformer/whistleblower he said he was.
Of course McCain didn’t win the 2000 nom, but has he ever lost a head-to-head election? I ask because I really don’t know. But in any case, he has won MANY, and maybe we need to give him a tad bit more credit for his campaign strategies.
innominatus on October 6, 2008 at 3:00 PM
The first part is certainly accurate but how did Obama “abet” this corruption? Dodd and Frank abetted Freddie and Fannie’s bad business practices but did Obama do anything specifically or did he just vote present? I think the political rhetoric somewhat exaggerates Obama’s role compared to many other politicians when it comes to the issue of abetting. – highhopes on October 6, 2008 at 2:55 PM
Abet means to “encourage, support, or countenance by aid or approval, usually in wrongdoing.”
By doing nothing to stop the F-F corruption as well as taking the second largest amount of F-F campaign money, Obama most certainly encouraged, supported and countenanced by his approval the corrupt actions of these organizations.

There are NO, NONE, NEIN provisions in the bill to dissolve Fannie or Freddie or repeal the CRA.
Don’t cut down the trunk expect to eat the fruit again.
The roots of this disaster is not Fannie, Freddie or the CRA but Congressional abuse of it’s authority under the Constitution.
It stright forward does not have the power to pass or create a Fannie, Freddie or CRA. None at all.
And to prove that it has no desire to reform itself and honor its oath of office, it rejects, by an overwhelming majority, John Shadegg;s simple proposal.

petunia is not a troll. I was a Fred supporter, but my impression was also that Mitt was treated unfairly in the primaries. At the very least, McCain and Huckabee pulled a very populist attack on Mitt. In any event, just because you and petunia disagree on one thing doesn’t mean she should be banished to KOS. Her point — that McCain can fight dirty or hard — is valid.
As for the polls, I’m with funky chicken. Ignore them. Try to stay positive, particularly when you are engaging with your friends and family. Give them reasons to vote FOR McCain-Palin, not just reasons to vote AGAINST Obama-Biden. There are a lot of people who do not respond to pollsters — we need those “invisible” voters to vote for McCain-Palin. If you read sites where there are disenchanted democrats posting, or moderates and independents, you’ll see that they are not buying the manure Obama is shoveling.
Y-not on October 6, 2008 at 3:01 PM
McCain’s relative silence on the Fannie/Freddie issue may have been strategic–before the bailout was passed, he didn’t want to get into the “blame game” but wanted to DO SOMETHING to fix the problem while Obama went off blaming Bush. By the way, this isn’t Bush’s fault, because Bush also tried to reform Fannie in 2003, but didn’t have the votes in the Senate!
Now that the bailout is passed, and the Senate will probably adjourn, McCain can go out and (1) blame Fannie and Freddie on the Democrats; (2) say that he saw the problem coming in 2005 and tried to reform them, but was blocked by the Democrats; (3) say that he worked to fix the problem NOW while Obama went out campaigning.
The major problem is TIME. McCain needs to hammer this over and over from now on, until the voters “get it” and the polls are at least even. The question becomes–does he have enough fight in him to do it, and enough time to convince the voters with what could be a tricky explanation?
Go get ‘em, Mac! Name names! It’s now or never!

Bishop on October 6, 2008 at 3:03 PM
Man I hope so but now he has to rehash the whole Keating five thing again. And so many don’t know or remember that McCain was found to be pretty clean and was the sole R scapegoat so the Dems didnt’ have to take the whole blame. I hope someone has figured out a way to point out that that was another Democrat financial/corruption failure!
petunia on October 6, 2008 at 3:03 PM
Can’t anyone recognize that this is an “I was for the bailout before I was against it” moment? Indeed the narrative has been written and the time to hang Fannie and Freddy around the Democrats neck was last week. Now McCain looks inconsistent, last week he suspended his campaign because his colleagues in Congress had to act decisively to save the day. Now he wants to point fingers . . .
I guess this is to capture votes of people like me who didn’t support the bailout in the first place. I killed your dog, sure was a good dog. To send a bone to red meat conservatives, too much, too little, too late. McCain you and I are over, you still have my vote, but not my confidence. For those of you keeping score at home, the Dow is down over 700. The other indicators are in the red also. And this is all attributable to the Dems wreaking havoc in the name of “fairness”.
If we could somehow capture the energy being expended in their ’spinning’ of their culpability, the energy crisis would be over. If we could hold accountable those guilty of legislative malpractice, we would be closer to restoring faith in the marketplace.
First item of business is to take advantage of the election 28 days away to flush the excremental Democrats out of Washington. Second: keep Obama away from the power he craves. This is no time for neophytes to take on the hardest job in the world. More than ever, we need a strong President. Obama is weak.

I went to the Clearwater Florida Sarah Palin rally. I was at the very front waiting for her to work the line and a man who looked like someone important w/in the camp, I told him the way to win over “undecided” voters is to promise PUNISHMENT of EVERYONE, CEO or CONGRESSMEN, that ignored and profitted from Freddy/Fannie. He said that the camp will be doing something like I suggested.
Mercy4Me on October 6, 2008 at 3:06 PM
Non action from a congressman is unacceptable. Just because someone didn’t take action, or only voted present, doesn’t let him off the hook. We elect congress leaders to make decisions, not duck and cover.
That is what McCain is going to hit him on, not only being complicit, but also not being a leader…he follows the party line, and at the end of that line was an economic noose.

Do we have any confirmation, aside from news reports, that Paulson really was working exclusively with the dems on a bailout package behind the scenes, including leaking information to Obama before the White House meeting? It sure seems like Bush should have had a firmer hand on Paulson’s reins, but I don’t know what news reports to trust any longer.

McCain seems to think that telling the truth in simple understandable terms is unfair. What he doesn’t seem to think is that he has to win this election. He knows enough about Obama to realize that this country will turn a corner that can never be reversed when the Pandora’s box of racist, American hating, deconstructionists get at the controls of the nation.
McCain needs to practical, tactical and unconditional in presenting his credentials along with the sea of lies that is coming from the other side.

funky chicken on October 6, 2008 at 3:17 PM
This is what I think that McCain needs to do to have any significant chance of winning the election.
I don’t think that it will work that well to go after Obvama directly for Fanny/Freddie as he has only been in the Senate for a few years and half that time he has been campaigning for President so he doesn’t have that many fingerprints on the cluster mess other than big campaign contributions.
McCain needs to go after the democrat likes of Dodd and Franks, et all in the debate. Whatever the question is turn it to Dodd and Franks, et all.
Obama will then be put in the position of being under a lot of pressure to defend them. If he takes the bait he will then tie himself to them and to the cluster mess, McCain won’t even have to do it. If he doesn’t take the bait it won’t work as well but should still work to some fair degree.
I see going after Dodd, Franks, et all as the first stage of a rocket and going after Obama as the second stage. McCain needs to let the first stage burn for a while until he fires the second stage or Obama does it for him.

Hey genius, he never said he was for it then against it. He said now that it is in ruin, something must be done to shore up at least the confidence.
He knows what was past can’t resolve, but genius, the world was watching and wanted some action. And genius this wasn’t a bone to conservatives, hard line conservatives didn’t want any kind of government buy/bail out.
Last week was too soon to pull out the guns, genius, it was important for two things to happen, one for Palin to redeem herself (and she did), the second is the “fruit” had to rotten before he through it out, it was too soon. People were still licking their wounds, timing, genius, timing.
One more thing genius, he was consistent, he suspended his campaign, indeed the convention, till after a short term disaster had passed, and genius, he suspended it again after even the dem leaders asked for his help. I think the economic tsunami facing us was a larger threat then the hurricane, and his support was needed and accepted (and when found it how effective the dems turned on him, typical). So my little economic/political genius you have just been schooled on the facts.

Glenn Reynolds at Instapundit has been advocating for McCain to hit (eg run against) the Democrat controlled Congress for the last two years. One of the reasons I worry about a Senator (ever) becoming President is that they are too damned collegial and respectful of their peers in Congress. We are being destroyed by the socialist advocacy of the Democratic party over the last thirty years (with the exception of Clinton’s era which was informed by the Republican takeover in 1994), the Democratic party has become a morass of Marxist thought and appeasement since George McGovern was trounced. I do not know why the American public is so short sighted, but do think that the leftist tendencies of the MSM has a lot to do with it.
McCain and Palin need to make running against the Democrat controlled congress (which Rassmussen says 59% of people polled want to throw out), a priority. It will have two results, one help them inform the public of what and who have really caused this financial crisis, and two, help the down ticket strugglers gain position against the lock the Democrats seem to have in this election. Hit them HARD and be RELENTLESS.

At this time of the election cycle, in 200 and 2004, Bush was behind in every poll, as much as 10%. Every poll had him behind, every one.
Reagan was a lost cause at this time in the cycle, not a chance of winning…and I think he did pretty good.
I think this attack, if it would have started 3 weeks ago, it would have been a “tired” attack, the MSM would have time to blow it off and make it boring.
The time is now, attack the dems for allowing this to happen, then tie Obama to the dems. He has never crossed his party, never taken on his party, he is a strict party democrat…if you liked the way the economic situation was created and developed, you are going to love what Obama and the democrats have planned.
