Ifill: Palin “blew me off” during the debate

And there wasn’t a blessed thing she could do about it — except maybe say, “Governor, with all due respect, you haven’t addressed my question.” Why didn’t she?

Full transcript here. Some interesting comments from Peggy Noonan about Palin’s brand of identity-politics populism, too.

Palin’s a quick study. Her flaw with Charlie and Katie was she let their questions frame and limit her answers, just as most of us would do. But in this debate, naivete’ was gone and she answered questions like the rest of the pols: The question is used as the platform for the message you need to convey. She had learned the lesson and executed it well.

Except for the trolls and mobys, of course. They alternately suck and blow – and I don’t mean eggs and cocaine.

Hmmm… not a single mention of Biden’s Gaffs and outright lies during the debate…

How predictable.

Romeo13 on October 5, 2008 at 6:10 PM

Can you imagine the MSM’s response if Palin, rather than Biden, had made all those nutty assertions about Lebanon and Hezbollah that completely misrepresented recent history in the Middle East? They’d have been calling her an idiot and a fool and saying that she was dangerously misinformed and too ignorant to be a heartbeat away from the presidency.(And yes, I know they’ve already done that, but with much less evidence to back it up than what Biden provided during the debate).

But since it was Biden demonstrating his massive ignorance, nobody in the MSM thinks it’s even worth mentioning. This, despite the fact that Obama (who has already demonstrated his own lack of knowledge on foreign policy in a variety of situations) chose Biden precisely because Biden was supposedly so knowledgeable about foreign affairs. But the MSM sees no reason to point any of this out to voters.

Good point; let’s hope that day doesn’t actually become necessary.

The good news here in Montana; McCain/Palin have held a double digit lead now for the past 3-4 weeks. This lead is growing rather than shrinking. Obama seems to have pulled his ads out of this state, or at least cut way back. All incumbent Democrats are in trouble here with the lone exception of Max Baucus.

Keemo on October 5, 2008 at 6:42 PM

No. The idiot in McCain’s camp that allowed Ifill to moderate that debate should be fired. It’s not her fault they picked her.

malan89 on October 5, 2008 at 5:54 PM
That idiot is named Lindsey Graham. And I completely agree. But there used to be this thing called journalistic ethics. She should have declined to accept.

D0WNT0WN on October 5, 2008 at 5:57 PM

Um, I thought the moderators were chosen by some independent commission. And Ifill chose to not reveal her book project at the time of her selection.

Again, why the knee-jerk attempt to blame the McCain campaign for something they didn’t do?

funky chicken on October 5, 2008 at 6:43 PM

why does anyone listen to biden. He is the one who wanted to partion Iraq, when ALL Iraqi’s said that was a bad move! that would have killed thousands of civilians and hundreds of ours.
He cant even defend Obamas “air-raiding villages” comment. So we just bombed and killed a top leader of the taliban today, does Obama think that is a victory for the war on terror? Or have we just “air-raided” another village?

Jeesh! In the world adults live in, the holder of the conflict is the one who is under a duty to reveal it. If you were on trial for you life and the judge and the cop testifying against you are boinking each other, is it your duty to find out? Or, is it the duty of the judge to recuse himself?

Blake on October 5, 2008 at 6:49 PM

So if I’m understanding correctly, Biden was there to not be a jerk, Palin was there to bypass the LSM, and Ifill stayed out of the way to avoid any obvious criticism over her conflict of interest.

Not exactly a debate, was it? Just “Fairness Doctrine: the Next Generation” – roughly equal time, trading off between Joe’s “substantive” lies about Bush and Sarah’s eph-all-yall zingers about the LSM and O’Biden. All while Ifill sat there bein’ all irrelevant and stuff.

I propose we do a lot more of that. It’s the best format the GOP ever had.

The panel on Brit Hume was talking about the moderators for the debates and they said that the campaigns do not pick the moderators. They said that used to there would be negotiations and some input from candidates, but now the debate commission just makes the decisions and notifies the candidates.

In the last election Ifill did a pretty good job with the Bush and Kerry debate she moderated, but she did not let anyone know about her book when the debates were being discussed.

Terrye on October 5, 2008 at 6:58 PM

I think Palin decided after her interviews with Gibson and Katie that she was going to do it her way, and I am glad she did.

As for Biden, I think people just assume that half of what he says is nonsense. That is why the guy keeps running for president and getting nowhere.

Terrye on October 5, 2008 at 7:00 PM

“We had the deck stacked with Gwen Obama Ifill as moderator, we told her beforehand no talking directly to the American people just answer Gwen’s questions slavishly, and most of all, don’t be personable and try to appeal to normal Americans, and wouldn’t oyu know it, that racist just did what she wanted to do and blew us off is, I think, the term.”

I asume Palin was there to communicate with us, not with Ifill

If Ifill needs more details she could write a letter.

As it is, Ifill got a lot more time to buzz Palin than I ever will. If Palin gave bad answers that will not be lost on the public

A debate is not about the moderator. Had Ifill let it be a debate instead of a staged two sided interview it would have been a lot more interesting and a lot more informative

ManlyRash on October 5, 2008 at 7:08 PM

It’s really offensive the way Gwen Ifill behaves as though she was somehow a victim here. It saddens me that Tom Brokaw played into that by sympathetically saying she just had to “keep her head high”. This was a clear conflict of interest. It didn’t matter what she wrote or to what extent she featured Sen. Obama – his name was in the title, it was timed to go on sale inauguration day, and there was clearly an intention to capitalize on him if he were elected. This meant there was a financial interest involved. The media would rightly complain if anyone else decided to consider his/her conflict of interest irrelevant.

Minor correction to the bottom line…

Biden “blew off” attacking Palin, so Ifill was rendered impotent. If Biden would have actually tried to debate Palin (and not the tired “last 8 years” crap), then Ifill could have steered more forcefully.

So… Good job, Joe. :)

As Palin told Carl Carmeron the day after the debate, the press has the duty to tell the American people the truth. Palin took advantage of her opportunity at the debate.

It’s too bad that she didn’t come to that conclusion earlier, before the Gibson interview.

I second your Buckley recommendation. My mother raised me on National Review, which I read from a young age with a dictionary at my side, and Firing Line. I literally went from Dr. Seuss to the verses of William von Dreele.

Krauthammer, Sowell, Steyn, Will and Hitchens are gifted writers and thinkers, but there is no real successor to Buckley and it’s our great loss.

The point is that Ifill is complaining when she certainly could have followed up.

csdeven on October 5, 2008 at 6:25 PM

She could have but it would have been completely pointless. 2 things would have happened. First, Palin would say again (after staring into space blankly for a few seconds) that she wasn’t going to answer the way Ifill and Biden want her to and that she was speaking directly to the American people (who apparently don’t want to her to answer simple policy questions). Second, there would be incessant whining about Ifill being biased for daring to ask Palin to answer a question. It would have been completely pointless to ask for a follow up the way Palin was filibustering.

Okay. While I agree with you that Ifill should have taken herself out of the running for moderator b/c of the book, the blame falls on the representative of the campaign (in this case, Grahmnesty) that allowed her to be picked. A simple Google search or sampling of her work would reveal her bias and conflict of interest (the book was announced in July and the agreement was reached in the end of August, it’s not as if Ifill was “hiding” the book from them). I’m sorry I’m not toeing your “McCain can do no wrong!!!” line, but Lindsay takes the fall on this one. Geez. You’d think two minutes of research on the topic before using the term “knee-jerk” would be the norm. In this case, you’re the one with the knee-jerk reaction.

Now it’s the “Ifill”……. all attention is on her.

But what just happened?

Weren’t we just facing Martial Law and the entire collapse of our financial system?

The farther from the “Bail-Out” bill we get, the more “Nothing to see here, move along……….”

Nothing has changed, all the liberal “social engineering” that caused the problem in the first place still exists!

No one is being held accountable!

Sure, we are moving to,

“……. The Treasury Department will now be sorting out the details of the the bill, and will make funds available over time to stabilize the situation……”

Throwing money to a bunch of bureaucrats will not keep this from happening again unless the laws that forced the banks to make the loans to people they knew could not pay them back or face a penalty are repealed…………. and people like Barney Frank and Chris Dodd, among many others, are in jail!

Where is the news about the multiple voter fraud prosecutions of ACORN? Thirty days out of a very critical election and not a single word?

Don’t fall for it, stay on point, DON’T LET THEM GET AWAY WITH THIS!!!!!!!!!!!

Seven Percent Solution on October 5, 2008 at 8:33 PM

So Ifill was complaining about being blown off when she participated in Meet the Presstitutes? Or was that a replay of Meet the Depressed? These talking heads certainly don’t like it when they don’t control the narrative.

Ifill claims that Biden came to debate McCain’s policies. Funniest thing: He spent a lot of gas attacking the Bush years and managed his dig at Cheney. Maybe he forgot who the candidates are.

We all noticed that Ifill didn’t mention Biden’s multiple re-writings of history and his errors, though she did work in a slam at Governor Palin for the same. There was no follow-up by the inquisitive (?!?) journalists on the panel to provide examples of such, however.

– AZCoyote

It should be blatantly obvious to the voters. Alas, the voters in this country are blatantly stupid. As evidenced by the results of 2006.

And there wasn’t a blessed thing she could do about it — except maybe say, “Governor, with all due respect, you haven’t addressed my question.” Why didn’t she?

Because the right-wing blogosphere — this community here included — created all that expectation of bias. Against that backdrop Ifill didn’t dare confront Palin even when she treated the debate as if it were an infomercial.

Wasn’t that the plan all along?

factoid on October 5, 2008 at 8:51 PM

You can put lip stick on Ifill and she is stiil a pig

Denniscat on October 5, 2008 at 8:51 PM

There was no follow-up by the inquisitive (?!?) journalists on the panel to provide examples of such, however.

onlineanalyst on October 5, 2008 at 8:37 PM

That’s because they are no longer journalist—–they’re lapdogs for the Democratic party. McCains battle is against more than his opponent. The longer Palin keeps these morons in her narrative the better.

My conservative mind is confused, this partisan bitch writes a book heralding the Age Of Obama, hides this from all parties involved and is still allowed to moderate a VP debate. Now, ignoring these facts she has the unmitigated gall to claim she was victimized by Palin’s agenda? Wow, uppity doesn’t come close to the sad reality of supremist belligerance getting stuffed down our throats in the name of racial equity.

All quaff the Messiah!

Maybe Gwen Ifil can write about it in her new upcoming book “How The Better Informed Lady From Alaska Put The Know-It-All Obama Supporter In Her Place.” Though I doubt that would even qualify as the working title.

Several days ago, someone posted a link to a video of Ifill’s response to SarahCuda’s speech at the RNC. I wonder if you could watch it and give the group an unbiased assessment of Ifill’s performance.

I thought it was despicable.

For Dems/Lefties the whole game is identity politics, victimization, and grievance mongering.

Riddle us this, Gwen: Why did Biden have repeated chances to rebut Palin’s remarks and thus have the last word? What exactly was your job as moderator?

(Do any of you think that Biden is hanging out with his peeps down at Home Depot this weekend, telling them about his train rides on the DC Express? Maybe some of them can inform him that his favorite local beanery closed a long time ago, too. “Say it isn’t so, Joe.”
