AP: Palin’s a racist for bringing up Ayers, or something; Update: McCain camp responds

posted at 2:35 pm on October 5, 2008 by Allahpundit

One of the clearest examples you’ll ever see of why The One seldom dirties his hands by playing the race card. Not only will his political surrogates do it for him, his media surrogates happily will, too. There were stories out yesterday about how McCain’s planning to go after him on Ayers over the next month and how Team Barry’s planning a little “preemptive” action. Here’s part of the preemption, courtesy of the AP: Mention Obama’s connection to a white domestic terrorist and you’re a racist.

“Our opponent … is someone who sees America, it seems, as being so imperfect, imperfect enough, that he’s palling around with terrorists who would target their own country,” Palin told a group of donors in Englewood, Colo. A deliberate attempt to smear Obama, McCain’s ticket-mate echoed the line at three separate events Saturday.

“This is not a man who sees America like you and I see America,” she said. “We see America as a force of good in this world. We see an America of exceptionalism.”…

Palin’s words avoid repulsing voters with overt racism. But is there another subtext for creating the false image of a black presidential nominee “palling around” with terrorists while assuring a predominantly white audience that he doesn’t see their America?

In a post-Sept. 11 America, terrorists are envisioned as dark-skinned radical Muslims, not the homegrown anarchists of Ayers’ day 40 years ago. With Obama a relative unknown when he began his campaign, the Internet hummed with false e-mails about ties to radical Islam of a foreign-born candidate.

Whether intended or not by the McCain campaign, portraying Obama as “not like us” is another potential appeal to racism. It suggests that the Hawaiian-born Christian is, at heart, un-American.

Most troubling, however, is how allowing racism to creep into the discussion serves McCain’s purpose so well. As the fallout from Wright’s sermons showed earlier this year, forcing Obama to abandon issues to talk about race leads to unresolved arguments about America’s promise to treat all people equally.

Biden couldn’t do any better in his VP attack-dog role, and now he doesn’t have to. The left’s spin on this is that the two never really “palled around,” which may or may not be true (Obama supporter Richard Daley famously calls them “friends”) but in either case is beside the point. The question isn’t whether they’re “pals,” it’s whether Obama had any objection to working with Ayers until he started running for president and was pressed on the subject. He attended a meet-and-greet at Ayers’s home as a neophyte pol to help launch his career; he served, apparently without a problem, alongside him on nonprofits. Not once, to my knowledge, has he claimed that he didn’t know Ayers’s past during that time. According to Andrew Sullivan, Palin’s refusal to produce medical evidence that Trig emerged from her birth canal and not Bristol’s is relevant as a measure of transparency and accountability. Presumably, then, Obama’s sustained comfort around a degenerate whose chief regret from his mad bomber days is that he didn’t do “more” is relevant as a measure of character, particularly since Ayers wasn’t the first radical with whom The One’s associated. Or have the Obama rules now been updated to absolve him from character questions that any other politician would be asked? Hillary didn’t think so. But she’s a racist too, I guess.

Two other points. One, note the casual, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it suggestion that it doesn’t matter if the campaign’s intent is racist or not. I’ve been warning you about that since the left went nuts over the Britney ad. In a sane world, whether or not there’s racist intent behind this would be the whole thrust of the inquiry; as it is, it’s an afterthought. And if you accept the AP’s premise that the rules for Obama should be different, then they’re right — it is an afterthought. Challenge The One’s personal judgments and you’re presumed guilty, conclusively. Two, I’m not sure how to take the fact that the AP seems more concerned with Obama being falsely linked to “dark-skinned radical Muslims” who set bombs than accurately linked to a light-skinned radical leftist who set bombs. If it turned out McCain had served on a nonprofit board with someone from the Manson family, rest assured that the media’s main vein of concern wouldn’t be how Team Barry might use that information to falsely imply that Maverick’s connected to other killers. I’ve made this point before, too: Under most circumstances the left is quick to argue against distinguishing between domestic and foreign terrorists, but suddenly the AP finds those distinctions very important indeed. Is the tool who wrote this so underwhelmed by what Ayers did that he can’t conceive of how it might worry voters except in terms of making them think Obama’s a Muslim?

Lots, lots more from Goldstein. Exit question: Why bother with the Ayers stuff anyway? Isn’t there a better use of McCain’s and Palin’s time at this point?

Update: Palin’s not backing down, and neither is Team Maverick:

“The last four weeks of this election will be about whether the American people are willing to turn our economy and national security over to Barack Obama, a man with little record, questionable judgment, and ties to radical figures like unrepentant domestic terrorist William Ayers. Americans need to ask themselves if they’ve ever befriended an unrepentant terrorist, or had a convicted felon help them buy their house — because those aren’t smears, those are true facts about Barack Obama.” —Tucker Bounds, spokesman McCain-Palin 2008

Update: E&P makes a good point, inadvertently, in trying to absolve Obama: If The One is guilty of looking the other way at Ayers’s terrorist past, so is pretty much every other Democrat in Chicago. This isn’t an “Obama problem,” in other words, as much as it is a problem with his side not fretting overly much about youthful ’60s indiscretions like killing cops with pipe bombs in the name of progress.

Well your Sarah Palin is claiming that Senator Obama, our next President, is not Ameriican. In fact, she and some of her supporters even call in unAmerican

I think you’re confusing the terms un-American and non-American. For instance Alger Hiss is un-American, Nicolas Sarkozy is non-American.

That is why we need to continue to mention his connections!
If a free people continue to cower so easily then we do not deserve to keep our freedom.
There have been people from around the world since the beginning of time that have risked their lives speaking up against evil. Many have been put to death,, died fighting, wasted away in prison, some their names and memories long forgotten, known only to God.
We cower at being called a racist. A name.
The stark reality is standing in front of us. The Truth Squads and Obama Youth have been birthed. If we shrink so easily at the name calling,, then we will certainly submit later to the next final solution.

And as much as you’re involved, you have got to know in your heart, that’s the only reason some of these folks are here. I’ll be gut-level honest after teh election if McCain tried to pass an amnesty bill or if the ticket turns left at all. But id the party doesn’t even get there, it won’t matter will it?

hawkdriver on October 5, 2008 at 7:26 PM

No, it won’t matter. However, you are going to lose credibility with people who vote for McCain if you blow sunshine up their rear ends now and then they are disappointed later when they realize all the crappy policies McCain is trying to push through. My strategy is to point out to people how they both suck, they are both going to pass crappy legislation we can’t stand, but Obama is going to hurt this country more than McCain. It’s better to be honest with people, so that they continue to listen to us later when we explain why things are happening and what we can do to stop them (or help them, whatever the case may be).

As to MB4, I don’t blame him for his attitude sometimes. I share it many times. I just don’t get a kick out of playing with people on here as he does. But I just roll my eyes when I see people here rah-rahing for McCain and Palin and talking about awesome they are and this and that. Both of them are poor candidates, McCain especially. Palin was thrust into this too soon, but will be a good candidate someday if she survives this. And if McCain was going up against an actual honest Democrat like Lieberman or even Hillary (who is more moderate-left than liberal-left, since she would watch the polls and not be as radical as Obama), I bet many would not have a problem sitting out and just letting Hillary have the reigns for 4 years and then we conservatives could regroup for 2012. That was the sentiment of many in the Primaries and early last year. But now that it’s Obama, things have changed.

And that’s fine, but I still don’t see any reason to rah-rah McCain. He’s still the crappy candidate he was all along, he simply looks like Reagan as compared to Obama. But that’s not saying much. Every Democrat in Congress looks like Reagan compared to Obama.

So… I can understand why MB4 does what he does, because he probably finds it laughable that people are so jazzed up about such lousy candidates, instead of just dealing with the reality that we have the lesser of two evils again. He probably just likes to try to balance things with humor and sarcasm to counter the ridiculous over the top adoration of McCain/Palin.

heh. Yeah, I know. Stupid me is coming into my office during commercials to post here. The problem is that I can still hear the TV in the other room and that’s when I hear all the damn Obama commercials. I heard one earlier that I just laughed and laughed at, after I held my mouth open in astonishment. Obama was actually going after McCain, calling *him* the big spender. He was listing off all these policies of McCain’s and saying X will cost $1 Trillion, Y will cost $1 Trillion, and then he ended with “We can’t afford John McCain”. I couldn’t believe that Obama was actually going after McCain as the big spender, knowing the huge spending Obama’s policies are going to cost.

But, I guess he’s counting on the ignorance of the public.

Back to more relevant OTs. I’m just thrilled my Bears kicked the crap outta the Lions today. Even without having Vasher and Tommie Harris. We were even nice enough to give them a token touchdown off a Hester fumble so they wouldn’t get shutout. It’s just like those who underestimate Rush Limbaugh, thinking he was only popular, because Clinton was in power. MB4 isn’t going to go away so long as there is someone in politics to criticize who is not adhering to conservative principles. McCain wants to seal the borders too, only his plan is a “little” different than yours. You must have missed his press conference, but then it wasn’t broadcast very widely.

Reporter: Senator McCain, is it true that if you become President you will put a real fence along the border with Mexico rather than just some phony so called “virtual fence”? And a follow up question sir, if so what will the physical fence look like?
John McCain: That is a very good question and yes when I become el President I will put up a physical fence. What will it look like? Well it will run the full length of the border and have special security gates every 100 feet.
All the security gates will have on them:
1) Press one for Spanish (with a response of “Welcome Amigo, my country is your country and please take a free map to the wonderful plantation owner employer of your choice. Also please feel free to enroll you children in our schools and demand that they be taught in Spanish and please also feel free to avail yourself of all the free medical care that you want. If there are any Gringos in line in front of you, just go to the head of the line. If you want to fly any Mexican flags plese feel free to just take down an American one and use it’s flag pole”).
2) Press two for English (with a response of “#uck you! I know more than any of you damned bigoted nativist lazy madre fornicario gringos who do not want what is right for America del Norte!!!”).

Obama is not scholarly to define “Christianity” from the Judaic books of Deuteronomy and Leviticus. He just couldn’t reference Jesus as anything but a radical. In private life and personal relationships the Beatitudes apply to every Christian’s ideals regardless of profession. From the new and everlasting covenant New Testament Gospel of Christ, Obama denied that the Beatitudes can belong to the faith of any military personnel. In effect, Obama would regulate what the military and what Christians may believe.

I saw that speech some time ago, and also one that Obama addressed to black youth called the “Joshua Generation” that directed them to defy government authority, tear down walls of our civilization, and make their ubermark over society from his community organizing regime.

Dude, there is no one more conservative than me. No one. The only sip of Kool-Aid I ever took was considering for a time that we might concede some crimes on death row to give our pro-life stance more credence. That went by the way-side after they developed the practice of late-term abortions. I’m back on even that issue now. MB4 and you together couldn’t be as conservative as me. But I see a real danger that if Obama gets in over McCain, a lot of what we are able to saw and do now will be illegal. McCain has to win. At all costs. There is no alternative. Think I’m overreacting, look at what way happening in Missouri with the abuse of power in a big group of “public” officials going after people putting up campaign ads against Obama. Go to those 9-11 truther sites and read about how they not only want to prosecute Bush, they say that the death penalty is justified in his case. Same sites say the officers (like me) and NCOs who let soldiers in battle are complicit too and should be prosecuted. My god, these people could in the space of two years worth of legislation make it impossible for us to win another. They don’t just disagree with us, they hate us and will do anything to destroy us as a party.

hawkdriver on October 5, 2008 at 8:26 PM

Listen to Tammy Bruce. She is awesome, and is ready to fight like hell for McCain/Palin. Her recent shows have been just awesome…blows Limbaugh away, and that is really hard to do.

Laura Ingraham appears to still be nursing her anti-McCain grudge kind of like Malkin. sad

Next time somebody says that McCain is “afraid” to try to tie Obama to Fannie Mae, please do link these ads:

If we had to get information out of somebody to prevent a 9-11, I bet McCain would let them manhandle.

I felt the same way about the torture thing. But I’ve done quite a bit of reading on milblogs and such about counter-insurgency (COINT) and I think we’re most effective if harsh treatment is very rare. We have to distinguish between the hard-core AQ folks and those who are fighting us because AQ will butcher their children if they don’t fight us.

There’s not a lot of love lost between Bush and McCain. That’s what primaries do to us. McCain could have supported the surge without seeming to Bush-bash, but it is downright hard to protect the reputation of somebody who’s dissed you badly (love-child allegations about his adopted child).

“The Associated Press is wrong,” Palin said. “The comments are about an association that has been known but hasn’t been talked about, and I think it’s fair to talk about where Barack Obama kicked off his political career, in the guy’s living room.”

justincase on October 5, 2008 at 8:44 PM

McCain was calling for a surge back in December of 2004. It was actually quite gracious of him to go along with the narrative that he was supporting “Bush’s surge” in 2007…when McCain first started pushing an increase in troop strength and different tactics etc, Bush was still calling for us to “stay the course.” Bush was saying “stay the course” up until very close to Nov. 2006.

No, they won’t. We feed our cats Science Diet and they won’t eat anything else… no table scraps… no empty ice cream dish. Only Science Diet. Dogs, on the other hand are far less picky. I have had a number of friends bring their dog into the house. Every single one has found the litter box and began eating the catsh*t…. I guess I need to get a dog so I don’t have to clean the litter box. Ooops. I can’t. I travel now and then and I can just put out extra food, water and litter box and the cats are fine. Dogs… well, I think they would eat all the food in the first fifteen minutes and God only knows what mess I would have when I returned..

Now, on a serious note. I love dogs but my travel habits prevent me from having one.

MB4 if you’re still around. I retraced the comments for this thread and I’ll extend a courtesy to you that you don’t seem capable of. I’ll say I overreacted to what I said and was incorrect about calling you a troll. (I think)But Dude, I asked a bunch of times different questions to what you were all about and you always just came back with smart ass answers. Seemed like a game to you. Try a post every once in a while like, “All kidding aside….” Bottom line for me is we can’t lose this election. I don’t come here to make friends or piss people off for the fun of it. I don’t come here to prove my typing is improving or compare my intelligence to the other bloggers. I come here to see what’s working or not about what we’re doing. I get a lot of my points when I go off the script in voter contact calls by what I read and what we talk about here.

If you think McCain isn’t worth the support because he’s no different than Obama then I sympathize. I’m not sure what your war experiences were when you were in but the last five years have been brutal and I see a lot of this election being a referendum on what we’ve done and what we’re going to be able to accomplish depending on which party wins. I also think if Obama wins, we’re done as a political entity and there might not be any more chances. They won’t let us reform like our sense of fair play and belief in a two-party system allowed them. So, I’m just going to make a mental note to avoid the threads you’re on. It’s always better if you come here and even with disagreements to be able to cut up with the folks while you’re interacting and have it be fun. Tonight wasn’t it.

From 1985 interview of Yuri Bezmenov (former KGB propagandist)(video clip found at http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x32cxf_yuri-bezmenov

So the next stage is destabilization. This time subverter does not care about your ideas and the patterns of your consumption. Whether you eat junk food and get fat and flabby doesn’t matter any more. This time, and it takes only from two to five years to destabilize a nation, it’s, the, what, what matters is essentials. Economy, foreign relations, defense systems.

And you can see quite clearly that in some areas, in such sensitive areas as defense and economy, the influence of Marxist-Leninist ideas in The United States is absolutely fantastic. I could never believe it fourteen years ago when I landed in this part of the world that the courses will go that fast.>>

An Obama presidency would be destabilization that would turn the whole world upside-down. As Russia, Venezuela, Iran, North Korea, and Syria are all upping the ante, we can’t afford a president whose only response to Russian aggression is (basically) “You shouldn’t do that, even though you’re totally justified because our stinkin’ president Bush did it too.”

When I really think about it and about what he has said and done to our military I get so mad I could spit bullets.
