Video: The obligatory “Obama Youth” fraternity

posted at 1:15 pm on October 4, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | regular view

I’ve been flooded with e-mails to start a thread on the video of the so-called Obama Youth fraternity, and never let it be said that I kept Hot Air readers from a forum that will undoubtedly pile up hundreds of comments. I don’t consider this anywhere near as egregious as Sing for Change, but your mileage may vary:

There is some difference between having 5-12 year olds singing about Barack Obama and this group, which appears old enough to start forming their own opinions on politics. The quasi-military marching disturbs some, but as Jonah Goldberg notes, there is a tradition of this in black fraternities. The mindless chant of Barack Obama’s health-care slogans are less disturbing than comical, at least to me.

The Sing for Change video was clearly more of an exploitation of children for political indoctrination on behalf of the parents involved. The health-care cadence at least discussed policy specifics in the midst of the hero worship. The Sing for Change video makes Obama a demi-god to whom children should sing hosannas, and is much more creepy.

And now Jonah Goldberg has joined the white gloves crowd over there at NR?

I strongly advise McCarthy, Levin, Steyn, and VDH to run like hell out of there before the gelding crew makes their next visit.

Ayers actually wrote Faith of my Fathers.

It’s a great read an even includes some laugh-out-loud poetry that Obama actually wrote.

Enjoy.

Dorvillian on October 4, 2008 at 1:58 PM

Not “Faith of My Fathers”. That’s John McCain’s book. You meant “Dreams From My Father”, right? Obama’s book.

Urban Community Leadership Academy of Kansas City, MO
From Atlas Shrugs post on this video

I called and spoke to Bernard, who said he was the assistant Dean. He was very gentlemanly and when I voiced my concerns about the video, he told me that this was taken at the school last year when Obama was beginning his campaign. He assured me that they stopped this “regiment” because they felt the person who was organizing it was pushing his political agenda.

Duh.

He assured me that he didn’t know it was on YouTube. I gave him the link to where to go for this video and when he found it he said, “Oh this is not good. I had no idea” I told him I’d take his word for it. He then asked me, nicely, “what’s the main concern? Because I want to understand where you’re coming from so that I can figure out how to handle this.”

Nicely, I told him that the video looked militant. I told him about the Colburn School video and how it resembles propaganda films from Communist dictatorships. I told him that the US military is frowned upon for going to high schools trying to recruit potential grads into joining their ranks. Why shouldn’t we frown upon those who come to a school like yours to encourage kids to worship a politician? One who is not even a president.

I also said that if this was done to make kids feel better about themselves, why do it in the name of Obama? Why not encourage kids to believe in the power of themselves?

He assured me that he would get to the bottom of the situation, thanked me for my call and we hung up.

I thought that he did, and found that Obama’s other book didn’t appear to be written by the same person.

At first I was skeptical, but after seeing how eerily similar Ayers’ writing was in his own stuff, I have to say it can’t be a coincidence.

As for this video, I wonder how people would feel about it if it were a group of young white men, dressed in the same clothing, chanting slogans like that about a white candidate.

Ask yourself that.

I hope so but the fact is the cult of personality is at a minimum a powerful dragon that may break its fetters….

at worst the principal knew precisely what was going on and was running cover.

I’d like to believe we will weather Barry like we have other Presidents….

if that belief is ever shattered I will rally in Texas…hope lots of you come join me and we can craft a new state if need be.

My son will not be raised a socialist by the state.

sven10077 on October 4, 2008 at 2:34 PM

Why don’t these guys do something useful and join the military?

They could learn real values there, not just allegiance to a man. Might take off some of that excess weight, too.

Question, this either took place in a school or a church. Or so it appeared. Does anyone know where this was performed?

IS Medicaid not free? One of them says something about people that cannot afford Medicaid. And I thought most kids could stay insured until 24. It was 24 I think some years ago when I was 24. So bless THE MESSIAH’S heart he will raise the age to 25! Big whoop!

JetBlast is sooooooooo RIGHT on the rioting. I am not kidding when I say that we have discussed with my parents, who live in the city, that they need to move out the night of the election and stay with us. We live further out and in an area where this type might meet with some lead if they tried anything. My Dad has said ammo for some guns in our area has sold out several times and reports from gun sales are very high. I worry about things happening like they did right after 9-11. There were some people killed and hurt afterward that were not involved or responsible. But there is genuine fear out here for what is going to happen regardless of the results.

what do you think it means?

It is using Biblical rhetoric to inflame impressionable people to a radical leftist economic bent. Gee, sounds an awful lot like Barry’s good friend jeremiah Wright and Father Pfleger doesn’t it?

The kids are literally discussing destroying the very fabric of the society that tolerates that crap in the first place.

If there are more of these groups out there on the scale of what Lt. Nixon says “just another version of the BSA and JROTC movements” then we have serious reason to be concerned.

That was militaristic (shaking head). Who’s teaching these kids this stuff anyway? They looked to be in their teens. Those are critical developmental years. They’re gonna cause some well meaning kids to grow up and be a angry bitter men. And did they march in chanting, “Alpha… Omega?” Were they calling Obama “Alpha and Omega?” Did I hear that correctly? Take a look:

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on October 4, 2008 at 2:48 PM

The quasi-military marching disturbs some, but as Jonah Goldberg notes, there is a tradition of this in black fraternities. The mindless chant of Barack Obama’s health-care slogans are less disturbing than comical, at least to me.

These students are in a charter school for grades 5-9, so it’s a bit of a stretch to compare this to what goes on at college fraternities. Notably, the schools test scores are dismal. Only 7.5% are proficient in math; 11.8% are proficient in what they call “Communication arts”.

What I find the most objectionable is the fact that their dreams are pinned on Obama’s success as a candidate. If the Obamatons in this video are not among those few who are proficient, their dreams of being engineers, architects, and lawyers are bound to be dashed, no matter who occupies the White House next year.

Please allow me to add some emphasis to your post – everyone here needs to read what is at your link, and they need to read Cashill’s analysis comparing the writings of Bill Ayers to Obama’s “Dreams From My Father”.

The similiarities in style are more than compelling. I think Cashill just about proves who Obama’s ghost writer was.

It would be on MSNBC and Drudge if they were white kids in this exact video. Fat Albert types are disarming, leading some to excuse it as just a feelgood black thing. It’s sad because it will lead to more of the same for young inner city kids looking for hope and change in their personal lives if it isn’t widely exposed.

Rmember, if Obama loses and these nice chubby kids show up at a street corner protest they aren’t going to be shouting their future career options.

“…because of Obama, I’m inspired to go to the salad bar once in a bloody while!”

…”take responsibility for our own lives”? Why, tell me, bleeding Jesus, why do black men have to be told this over and over and over…could it be that “because of Obama”, something outside themselves, someone outside themselves, has to happen before they can act? To they need a catalyst in order to do the right, or any, thing?

They’re doing their little fraternity dances to Obama…they’re wearing dresses with his mug printed on ‘em at Paris fashion week…as observed, they’re rounding up kids and making them — below the age of consent, the kid can’t consent, so he or she is being made to do something — sing his praises…and he’s never, never never done anything! Nada! Zip! Nic! Nichts! Zippo!

This guy is like a drive in movie screen…when conditions are right, folks can project themselves, their agendas, their aspirations, and their guilt on him…during the day, he’s a useless eyesore, good for little else.

If Mr. McCain wakes up, if the “Bradley effect” is real, if the election goes against Obama and his Obamatons…expect an eruption of that’d make Vesuvius look like a zit popping…too many people have too much of their otherwise directionless lives invested in this cypher of a man…and, “because of Obama”, we’re gonna see the electoral version of crap in the vein of “Spike” Lee claiming that Mr. Bush blew up the levees and McKinney’s accusations of mass murder….

“…we didn’t get what we wanted…when we wanted it…waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!…

…so, maybe they’ll have to go out and take responsibility for themselves…by themselves…because of Obama….

We’ll rally in Texas and go from there…

sven10077 on October 4, 2008 at 3:47 PM

I also like the nice little “African swing” thing they had going on there. I can just imagine them doing that little swing thing and Obama chant as their corporal places the gasoline tire necklace around your head.

JellyToast on October 4, 2008 at 3:49 PM

Indeed, seeing as how they comprise roughly 12% of the population. This AIN’T South Africa or Zimbabwe, folks.

ManlyRash on October 4, 2008 at 3:03 PM

…the problem isn’t race…if it were, as you say, 12% is hardly a mandate….

…the problem is this fascination with unstated, unspecific, amorphous “change” being touted internationally…folks’ve been sold a bill of goods that things are crappy, and need to be changed…and that this one-hit wonder is has the gnostic plan to kiss-it-make-it-better.

You get people all on fire for change, and the folks don’t demand specifics, you’re faced with a mob of people who can both be lied to at will and directed to do just about anything.

Face it: folks are determined to vote for him based on nothing. Nothing. They’re electing him to effect change — a thing which he’s never once demonstrated he can do — more or less wholesale.

In the end, these gormless idiots — and it may turn out that we’re talking about slightly over half the electorate here — are willing to subordinate everything in our national government, put this cypher in charge, in effect to shut the rest of us up! The change they want is for the neighbors with whom they don’t agree to knuckle under.

It isn’t race…it’s about half the electorate buying into the promises of a feather-merchant…selling thin air….

Puritan1648 on October 4, 2008 at 3:49 PM

Best summation of this election I have ever seen! It comes down to; “US or USSA?” You decide.

Star20 on October 4, 2008 at 3:39 PM

Nice Viral ad….”one candidate thinks there needs to be a spare ’s’ in USA….”

sven10077 on October 4, 2008 at 3:50 PM

Can you please direct me to which councils of the Boy Scouts and which units of the JROTC were engaged in politically charged racially monopolistic thuggish yelling of destroying the old order?

What was thuggish about this?

Islamberg: A Terror Compound in New York … or Misunderstood Neighbors?

BrianA on October 4, 2008 at 3:53 PM

Real change I can believe in after seeing this, is moving up from my 9mm to a 45 cal.

crr6 on October 4, 2008 at 3:51 PM

Well CCCP6, you may not have noticed but “change” was being delivered with a combo hip-hop/military undertone and it was not a polite admonition for a consensus building…..

Aunt Esther put it best…”Barack will not let you go back to your old life”….

thanks Aunt E but I already have a Messiah he ain’t come home yet but he works true miracles.

sven10077 on October 4, 2008 at 3:56 PM

it’s also a compound shrouded in local rumors, mystery — and fear — sitting near the huge reservoir system that provides New York City with most of its drinking water.

Like I said gigantic abbatoirs…

a “civillian national security force” with teeth would not be a bad idea to protect our aquifers….

I could see “believers” “sowing Carthage with salt”….

sven10077 on October 4, 2008 at 4:01 PM

This nation is built for guerilla warfare.

sven10077 on October 4, 2008 at 3:19 PM

I’ve told that to people time and again. People here and around the world think of us in the same terms as Europe and really can’t grasp that we have states bigger then a lot of countries and cities with populations greater then some cities. I don’t even think you need a great deal of firepower. Give me ten guys/gals with decent scoped 22 caliber rifles and we could cause havoc just wounding people and the up side is that they are relatively quite. There are so many here that can drive, fly, dive and shoot that we revile some countries armies in training and firepower. People just don’t see that because they think we are just a want to be European country.

I’m sorry I must have missed it. How exactly was it delivered with a hip-hop undertone? Chanting typically doesn’t come off as polite….but this wasn’t “thuggish” I wonder why it would be described that way.

crr6 on October 4, 2008 at 4:08 PM

This is the old material. They’re prepping the new stuff where all of the kids are chanting “obey….obey…..”

I’m sorry did you hear any room for compromise in the piece CCCP6?

I didn’t…when guys in gold boots, cammy pants, with fragile self-esteem start shouting their Christmas list at me I don’t see an opportunity for consensus building.

Do you?

sven10077 on October 4, 2008 at 4:11 PM

Bwaaaaaa! I guess America will now have a bunch of fat, illiterate, racist little entrepreneurs, archichects, automotive technicians and lawyers, all “AO” branded onto their arms like stupid cows, and wearing camo pants, even though they wouldn’t make it 24 into basic training.

I didn’t read the comment you’re referring to, but we aware that the racist black alpha omega fraternity is the ass-clown organization that has been branding (yes, like cattle) their recruits for decades. Even though they’re a bunch of college pansies, they fancy themselves a militant black organization. Yes, they’re thugs.

They won’t be targeting people who can fight back easily they will be teeing off on innocents if the worst happens.

It was my comment, and thanks…I was gonna point that out shortly.

This little group is not an anomaly….

they are part of a movement.

sven10077 on October 4, 2008 at 4:18 PM

“Because of Obama I …”

Ok, so what they’re saying is without Obama they wouldn’t do any of this? Why is that exactly?

…a mob awaiting a leader….

Puritan1648 on October 4, 2008 at 4:21 PM

That Yuri Bezmenov video is a must see.

1) Demoralization
2) Destabilization
3) Crisis (Bailout anyone?)
4) Normalization

These were the steps the KGB used to accomplish their ends. It is prophetic for the tactics of today’s American far Left. Not really the Communism angle, but the Socialism / Marxism angle for today’s America. This is a perilous time for our country. Have we Americans lost our stomach for the hard work of freedom, the free market, and independence from an intrusive government?

sven10077 on October 4, 2008 at 4:18 PM

The amazing thing I never realized is that apparently this is never discussed in polite society. I graduated an Illinois State University in 1982, and these clowns were marching around campus in their parmilitary outfits back then. We laughed at them.

26 years later, you can google “racist black fraternities” and you’ll get almost nothing relevant. Everything you’ll see is about some knuckleheads at Alabama or Auburn, and accusations of white students making prank phone calls to black frats.

What a joke. Can you even effing imagine a white fraternity where the guys march around campus with brands on their arms and army boots, glaring at everyone and chanting on the quad at 2am? Good heavens, they’d be shut down by the Ivory Tower on Day 1.
