Video: An American Carol debuts in New York

The new conservative comedy, An American Carol, debuted last night nationwide, and perhaps no place outside of San Francisco would be more hostile to it than New York City. However, RevYou’s Grace Randolph manages to find many filmgoers coming out of the debut showing, and they seem rather pleased with the results. Well, except for one man, who turns out to have an interesting profession:

The most poignant moment of this clip for me is the interview with a young man who emigrated to the US and became a citizen. Listen to his comment about love for his adopted country, and how little he sees of it from its natural-born citizens.

This is An American Carol’s opening weekend.  If we want to make Hollywood safe for conservative-themed movies, we need to get to the theaters this weekend to show our support.  It’s worth the price of entry just for that, and I guarantee you at least a few good belly laughs.  Get out there, and take a liberal with you.  Just make sure he’s not writing a review.

I’ll see the movie and love it per the mini
reviews in the thread. . . But I’ll be danm if I’ll
watch that sad sack looking character in the clip here.

I’ve about had as much crybaby BS from any of these
lefties (and I’m assuming he’s one ) to last me several
lifetimes.

Well shoot, I may just have to go see this. Funny, while playing the video, I had an Obama campaigner at my door and another at the neighbor’s door. I said I’m not voting for Obama and I am registered to vote. Everyone was polite, so no biggee.

aikidoka on October 4, 2008 at 2:59 PM

I just got home from seeing it and thought it was pretty good. Some elements were too repetitve but there were some good laughs. My favorite part was the shoot out scene in the court house. ACLU zombie-like lawyers were invading, so Patton grabs some of his troops and Micheal Malone with shotguns to fend them off. Dennis Hopper is the judge and he pulls out a shotgun from underneath his desk and picks off a lawyer who is trying to chisel away the 10 commandments.

I also liked the little kid who referred to Micheal Malone as, “Uncle Asshole.”

The immigrant’s sweet words brought tears to my eyes and shame to my heart, for many of my fellow Americans.

Movie was funny.

“Mohammed!”

“What?”

After having seen the movie Orgazmo I can see why some would be offended by the movie, especially those of the Mormon faith, however supression of freedom of speech is still supression of one of our fundamental rights as American citizens regardless of how offensive that speech (in this case a movie) may be.

I’m not sure which film offends the Mormons? Is it Orgazmo, or American Carol? If the latter, I don’t understand why you would purposely offend the most conservative state in the union.
I was already to go see it, but not so much now.
So please clear it up for me. I had just informed my grandson to go see it. Don’t want to call him back and tell him to forget it.
By the way, another film that has a strong moral is “Forever Strong”. You all might like to take it in if it comes to your neighborhood. It’s actually about a rugby team and is great for any age.

Bambi on October 4, 2008 at 3:29 PM

AAC is not about Mormons- the other movie is…

Me and the wife are going to see it tomorrow (Sunday, Oct 05) frankly, I CAN’T WAIT! *jumps up and down in excitement*

What? That’s not “suppression of free speech”. You have no free speech on someone else’s private property. If a theater doesn’t want to show a movie it does not have to and it does not stand against free speech if it chooses to do so.

Just went and bought 3 tickets. Was amusing – several belly laughs – and worth the three times price. Opening weekend sales, people :) !

There’s no way I’m getting to see it anytime soon, but I’m tempted to buy a ticket anyway! Esp. since movies are still only $5 here…

ThePrez on October 4, 2008 at 4:34 PM

A disappointing ninth-place opening, earning only $1.2M on its opening day:

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/daily/chart/

It did beat out Bill Maher’s Religulous by the slightest of margins, but that film is only playing on one-third as many screens. I suspect some readers will be heartened to see the Christian drama Fireproof holding up surprisingly well.

Damian P. on October 4, 2008 at 4:47 PM

Remember, those are projections and I’d wager it’ll do 5-7 million this weekend in limited release.

crscott on October 4, 2008 at 4:58 PM

on my way to see it now – at the same theatre in the video above!

jbnyc on October 4, 2008 at 5:21 PM

I just got back from seeing it. I bought two tickets – one for me and one for the cause. It was a matinee at 1:30 in the afternoon in Plano, TX. The theater was about 25% full. In the box office, the 7PM show was already sold out.

Some very funny bits and some bits where it kind of dragged. Overall, I’d give it a B.

The trailer for W. didn’t get any reaction out of the crowd, except for my hissing.

Bambi on October 4, 2008 at 3:29 PM

Sorry for the confusion. I was speaking of the movie that came out several years ago called Orgazmo, that’s the one that is offensive to Mormons (and rightly so). I was not talking about the new release of An American Carol, two TOTALLY different movies, Orgazmo was rated R, An American Carol is PG13, not to mention neither movie have anything in common!

Liberty or Death on October 4, 2008 at 5:58 PM

Sound went out at 10 minutes in; management had to give out refunds, but most stayed and watched with fixed (low volume) sound.

Later that evening I used my refund to watch Samuel Jackson’s new thriller, Lakeside Terrace. 10% full.

fred5678 on October 4, 2008 at 2:30 PM

This is the second time I’ve heard this. The first time was from a moviegoer who read in the paper that AAC was playing at a Burbank theater. Upon arriving at the theater, there was no movie poster and no title on the marquee. They had to ask if it was playing. They were told it was.

There was a sound problem and everyone asked for their money back.

Sounds fishy to me. I wouldn’t be surprised if a bit of sabotage is going on.

MikeZero on October 4, 2008 at 6:13 PM

We’re seeing it tonight, however, instead of driving the 15 minutes to King of Prussia (the bastards aren’t showin it!) we’re driving the 25 mins to Plymouth Meeting. The extra gas is of course for the cause!

drmanyee on October 4, 2008 at 6:14 PM

I made the schlep up the turnpike to see the movie. Just got back from seeing it and I feel it deserves mixed reviews. The parts that had some poignant moments and truly made me tear up were John Voight as President Washington, the troops standing proud at the concert in MSG and the end with the troops shipping out to the Persian Gulf. Those are the moments that will last from this movie and will remind others for what our country stands.
The parts I didn’t care for were all the constant slapstick stuff with Michael Malone constantly getting bashed in the head and getting stepped on.
I’ll still see it again with my girlfriend, but I hope this movie gives others the opportunity to produce more patriotic films.

njrob on October 4, 2008 at 6:38 PM

I saw it in Burbank yesterday afternoon and, yes like others have mentioned, the sound kept going out. AMC Theater 8. In the mall. It’s probably not so much sabotage as it is crappy management at the theater.

As for the movie – not that funny but still enjoyable because of its unashamedly pro-America, pro-military content. What surprised me were the scenes that actually made me tear up a bit which I was not expecting from a Zucker comedy. There’s one scene where soldiers in the field are kneeling in prayer and they rise to go into action in slo-mo. Might not sound like much but it got me. What we need is an openly conservative drama to present such serious things.

It’s great to actually see a patriotic movie where you’re not going to get the inevitable sucker punch of hyper-partisan, anti-American drivel that you get in all other movies now. That alone made it worth seeing for me.

Django on October 4, 2008 at 7:01 PM

I enjoyed this review of Bill Maher’s “Religulous”…in the SF Chronicle no less….

Bill Maher does something amazing in “Religulous.” He makes Michael Moore look incredibly likable in comparison.

In the film, in which he travels around meeting religious people and making fun of them, Maher becomes the incarnation of what the most paranoid red-state Americans picture when they imagine people who live on the two coasts: He’s smug. He’s arrogant. He doesn’t listen. He’s full of wisecracks, rides around in a nice car and acts as if everybody he meets is a complete idiot.

I took the whole family Friday afternoon and we LOVED it! It was one of the funniest movies I’ve seen in a long time. It’d be nice for liberals to understand that this is how normal Americans see them as so anti-American.

Once again, GREAT MOVIE!

ammo john on October 4, 2008 at 7:06 PM

As far as a Zucker movie goes it is kind of sub-par for laughs but for satire it is very good. What I liked was seeing some of my favorite actors obviously having fun.

Life in the South is good, no subterfuge in East Tennessee, the movie was not sabotaged and got the same billing as the other movies.

Pelayo on October 4, 2008 at 7:15 PM

Saw it today and it was very good. I was pleasantly surprised to see Kevin Sorbo and Gail O’Grady making an appearance, not to mention Kelsey Grammar, Jon Voight, Dennis Hopper and the others. It was funny and there were a couple of very moving scenes which I’m sure completely flew by that reviewer.

Also, that reviewer is obviously ignorant as regards JFK. I have a feeling the real JFK would have been just as disgusted with today’s Democratic Party and the left as was the movie’s.

If you haven’t seen this movie–go see it! We need to support these type of movies if we’re going to see a conservative presence restored in our culture.

If this movie is successful, that is it makes money, another one will be on the way. I would like to see Maher raked over the coals. I nominate Verne Troyer for the Maher role.

YES it was funny it was worth going to see. Do I believe Micheal Moore has a soul that can be reached? That is what I have been raised to Believe, no one is beyond the Grace of God. Not Even Michael Moore, maybe this is God sending him a sign SMILE.

The Democrat Party was NOT always, anti American Military. JFK was certainly NOT anti American Military or anti America. He Loved this Country. I remember what the Democrat Party used to represent, recall Zell Miller’s address to the Republican Party at the Convention in 2006 a Democrat and a Marine Veteran. The Democrats didn’t start trending negative to their own Neighbors and Families (That is who makes up the Volunteer Military) I think until the Draft Dodger William J Clinton was elected. Then It seems a very far left wing of the Democrat party, took hold of the Party and choked out many who still admired service to their country just like JFK. Senator James Webb of Virginia is a Marine Veteran, with a son in the Marines, I hardly think he hates the American Military. Joe Biden’s son is serving. But the Leadership of the Democrat Party today, don’t hold American Military Service People in the same regard as many in the Democrat Party’s past. Remember the big Complaint from the Obama Camp, that when he debated John McCain, That John McCain didn’t mention the Middle Class. Well unless you count the time he used the American Military Service Person, as a wedge political issue, He stated, we have to bring the troops home from Iraq and in the next breath send them to Afghanistan. Obama didn’t mention the 3 MILLION all volunteer American Military. No Praise for their sacrifice no acknowledgment of the outstanding accomplishment of the Surge. Whaz up with that? We are retired Military and still have members of our Family serving so I noticed. When you count up all people involved with Military Familys, that is a lot of people as in registered American Voters.

Dr Evil on October 4, 2008 at 8:19 PM

Hey, I just got back from the movie. Absolutely enjoyed it. Please go and see it and throw your support to some of the Hollywood good-guys. But as a disclaimer, if you are going to judge this flick on it’s ability to keep you laughing non-stop from beginning to end, stay home. It’s full of laughs but I’m not sure a complete lampooning of life is what Zucker was going for here. There is an absolute serious under-belly to this movie that is intentional and I’m sorry to say will in it’s nature detract from the humor. But I get it and if you really love this country so will you. You just have to take the funny with the patriotic theme which is always a little corny. But then again, when it comes to traditional love of this country type emotion, I like corny.

PS Not to put any pressure of you, but a sure way to discourage any more conservative movies like this would be to let it be a box office flop.

I saw it this afternoon, and my husband and his friend just left to go see it tonight. I thought it was funny (and so did the audience), and they should make a web game out of the lawyer scene (I’d love to blow away some zombie lawyers myself). Oh, and Jon Voight nailed Washington – spot on. The segment with him (the reason for the dust in the church), I cried. I cried at the end too. I’m emotional.

I went to a matinee at 2:50 – the movie was in the smallest theater, about a quarter full. I’m wondering how full it’ll be for my husband.

When you ask the majority of these kids why they’re doing it, you would expect tehm to say it makes it easier to gain their citizenship. Without fail they will tell you that they think the US is one of the last great hopes on this entire planet and that it may be the last hope in the war on terror.

Just got back from seeing it. Lots of laugh out loud moments, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. That reviewer in the clip may be the NYT reviewer who wrote:

An American Carol” wasn’t screened in advance for critics, but why would it be? After all, what good is the traitorous opinion of the cheese-eating news-media elite when it comes to a satire of the radical left?

He was being sarcastic, of course, but I think he was (unintentionally) right on.

I enjoyed this review of Bill Maher’s “Religulous”…in the SF Chronicle no less….

–Right after 9/11, Maher said, “We have been the cowards lobbing cruise missiles from 2,000 miles away. That’s cowardly. Staying in the airplane when it hits the building, say what you want about it, it’s not cowardly.”

–To celebrate the Halloween that came right after the beloved Steve Irwin was killed by a sting ray, Maher donned a khaki shirt and shorts, and he had a fake sting ray tail attached to his chest.

–Maher was slapped with a $9 million palimony suit by an ex-girlfriend who alleges that he subjected her to physical and verbal abuse, including “degrading racial comments”. The plaintiff was Nancy Johnson, a Black model and former flight attendant.

–Maher: “When you look at beliefs in such things as, do you go to heaven, is there a devil, we have more in common with Turkey and Iran and Syria than we do with European nations and Canada and nations that, yes, I would consider more enlightened than us.”

–Maher: “I have two dogs — if I had two retarded children, I’d be a hero. And yet the dogs, which are pretty much the same thing. What? They’re sweet. They’re loving. They’re kind, but they don’t mentally advance at all … Dogs are like retarded children.”

My late paternal grandfather was born in Chernigov and came over in 1914 when he was 3.
When I was in my 20’s I learned that he had used my US born grandmother’s connections to stay out of the draft-my late father(born in ‘42) was conceived partially with that end in mind.
When I joined the USMC right out of high school(I washed out due to a coordination problem) my grandparents told me that I had no business joining and that I should let the “goyim” die for their country.

packsoldier on October 4, 2008 at 11:45 PM

LOVED IT! Even in Boca Raton, people actually clapped at certain parts. Here’s my review. :)

Dariaanne on October 4, 2008 at 11:55 PM

We saw the movie on Friday and loved it. The theatre was full on a Friday in deep blue Boulder County. I don’t see movies in the theatre very often and never a comedy. I’d forgotten how much fun it is to belly laugh with a hundred people.

This is Three Stooges comedy and you have to go into the movie understanding the humor. Once you do, you realize this is a classic. I laughed so hard I cried, particularly with Dennis Hopper and the ACLU scene.

Best of all, this movie had a great heart to it. Michael “Malone” is not evil, he’s misguided. When he understands, when he comes around, you cheer for him. Chris Farley did an amazing job to make this loathsome human being someone you could root for.

We took our kids and they loved it. There’s some Hollywood explosions and some fake stage blood, plus a few bad words, but nothing the kids haven’t heard on the playground.

Don’t get a babysitter, take any kid over the age of 10 to this movie. And make your teenagers go. Give them cash to take their friends. They need to see this movie! (And they’ll laugh, because it’s genuinely funny.)

My brother and I went and did our duty of shelling out $19 for conservative films. And while I wholeheartedly support the notion of right wing film making, the film was disappointing. Simply put, it wasn’t funny enough. There were some great laughs (the terrorist training video was great), but most of the best jokes are in the trailer. In fact, the main problem with the film is that the message gets in the way of the humor rather than being a vehicle for the humor.

I think more people will react favorably if a movie is funny first, political second.

That said, go support the film.

This film doesn’t hold a candle to TEAM AMERICA.

lexhamfox on October 5, 2008 at 2:59 AM

I just love the lone dissenter. He called the movie “slanted.” Obviously he slept through some classes in writing school. Of course the movie is slanted. AAC is taking a side/position. The marketing of this movie made it clear that it was a conservative-themed film, aimed at making fun of the liberals and portraying America as a source of good in this world.

The film reviewer didn’t like it because he disagreed with its point-of-view. I bet if the movie was told from a liberal view, that same reviewer would have not called it bias.

As for the movie itself, it was pretty funny. I laughed a lot. The film does a good job at ridiculing famous liberals and their institutions. The only weak area is showing us more examples on how American is not to be blamed for the terrorism in the world. It was briefly touched upon in the beginning.

Frank T.J Mackey on October 5, 2008 at 8:41 AM

Zucker has never done anything this poorly written or disjointed. I’m sorry, I wanted to love this film, but it just wasn’t very good.

packsoldier on October 5, 2008 at 8:42 AM

This film doesn’t hold a candle to TEAM AMERICA.

Disagree. The problem with “Team America” is that it refused to take a side. If you look at the movie closely, you will see that the movie mocks the Bush Administration and war hawks just as much as liberal celebrities in Hollywood. So in a sense, the movie is criticizing anybody with an opinion about terrorism in the world. With “An American Carol,” the film takes a position and point-of-view and runs with it.

Saw the movie last night with 3 other people. We are in the midwest (northeast KS). It was shown in the smallest theater and was about 50% full. I was happy to see that many of the men from the local Army base there.

Overall a good movie. There could have definitely been more funny parts, but I would go see it again. I challenge anyone who sees it to not get choked up with the scenes of John Voight and 9/11.

Go see it!

My wife and I saw the last show on Friday night at 9:40 with a pretty full theater of people. I loved it! My wife thought it was enjoyable. We are another coupe where she says B to B- but I say B+ to A-! My fav? “I just enjoy slapping you!” oh yeah, and “Uncle A$%H0le” too!

Again, the theater applauded at the end here in San Diego too.

Ug. Not playing anywhere near me.
Is there a complete list of locations somewhere? That might be a good thing to post here.

It was suppose to be 9th on opening, which I think is excellent because it was only open in about 4 theaters in the major metropolitan area where I liver. When I went to see it yesterday, it was about 75% full (good for a Saturday matinee I think). It was a solid film, and many of the comments in the above posts are reasonable. John Voight’s sequence will be the most memorable, and the take-down of the Holywood glitterati was outstanding. I, personally, could have done without the Mike Malone youth sequence and the disabled kids portion, but overall there were a lot of hearty laughs. The audience gave it a rousing ovation at the end.

Michael Moore = releases blockbuster prior to election in 2004. Bush wins.

Jerry Zucker = releases flop in 2008. ?

Stone and Parker are equal opportunity satirists, yes. But the attacks on the liberals in Team America are far more scathing than those leveled at conservatives.

Completely disagree. In “Team America,” only Hollywood celebrities get mocked for saying outrageous things. The right and the Bush Administration are mocked for having a misguided foreign policy. Team America a.k.a the Bush Administration tries to save the world, but ends up messing things up worse than before. You also see Team America ignoring mistakes made and having an ineffective foreign policy, which has no end solution.

“Team America” is by no means a conservative comedy. It is a movie too afraid to make a stand on anything, and instead just mocks anybody with an opinion.

I posted in the headlines but I’ll give people here a update also. I went to see AAC today. The ticket taker asked if I was by myself because a couple was asking for tickets to a later playing because they could not finds seats together. When I express surprise she stated that it had been pretty full the entire weekend. I personally got a Bob Uecker seat, if anyone is old enough to recognize the reference.

It’s only a flop even it doesn’t make money.

Cindy Munford on October 5, 2008 at 4:07 PM

This may have been asked but does anyone know when the film will be released in Canada?

I don’t but you may want to take a look at the film’s website, maybe it will have some information.

Cindy Munford on October 5, 2008 at 4:41 PM

Thanks Cindy. Looked there and nothing. I cannot find a theater in Canada playing it.

I saw this movie today and thought it was hilarious. I loved how they tore Michael Moore apart and made him look like a complete idiot (which really isn’t that hard to do.) Let’s help ensure that this movie beats Bill Maher’s piece of crap anti-religion movie.

I looked to, sorry. I guess they feel like it isn’t for international consumption.

Cindy Munford on October 5, 2008 at 7:57 PM

I took the entire family to see it, and it was good enough to cause me to want to buy a copy of it as soon as it is available.

I would have written the ending differently, but overall it was great!

DannoJyd on October 5, 2008 at 11:07 PM

I saw the movie and thought it was great. Lots of laughs. However, the movie is PG-13 and it earned every bit of that PG-13. Not a movie to take the little kids too, they might start using language like the kids in this movie to get laughs.
