Video: An American Carol debuts in New York

The new conservative comedy, An American Carol, debuted last night nationwide, and perhaps no place outside of San Francisco would be more hostile to it than New York City. However, RevYou’s Grace Randolph manages to find many filmgoers coming out of the debut showing, and they seem rather pleased with the results. Well, except for one man, who turns out to have an interesting profession:
The most poignant moment of this clip for me is the interview with a young man who emigrated to the US and became a citizen. Listen to his comment about love for his adopted country, and how little he sees of it from its natural-born citizens.
This is An American Carol’s opening weekend. If we want to make Hollywood safe for conservative-themed movies, we need to get to the theaters this weekend to show our support. It’s worth the price of entry just for that, and I guarantee you at least a few good belly laughs. Get out there, and take a liberal with you. Just make sure he’s not writing a review.

The Rottentomatoes page is hilarious. All the liberal reviewers are brining politics into it. I saw one claiming this is the last thing we need right now as it’s too divisive.

It’s disgusting that somebody stepping out of line in Hollywood has to be such a big deal.

I saw it last night. All in all, it really isn’t very good but I had a number of chuckles and truly enjoyed all the politically incorrect truths pointed out. Go see it… if for no other reason than to support the tiny contingent of Hollywood conservatives.

Yes, the reviews. I can’t wait. Anybody know who the little nebbish in the clip works for?

I disagree. I don’t remember the last time I laughed that hard through a movie. Absolutely hysterical from the beginning to the end.
TheNolan on October 4, 2008 at 11:02 AM
Saw it yesterday here in San Diego. I gave it a C. Not easy mixing Zucker’s zany humor style with American history and patriotism. Definitely some funny stuff, as well as reminders of some of our country’s greatest challenges. I’d say the theatre was about 80% full. One funny thing before the movie even started….a preview of Oliver Stone’s movie on GW called “Bush”….the audience was openly booing Stone. Loved it. :)

I saw it yesterday – might see it again this weekend…
American Carol absolutely must beat Religulous this weekend!!!

I would really like to see something a bit more serious…. say maybe a “true fictionalized” account of the players and how we got in the financial mess. Barney and his Fannie buddy… the players and the money they got (Raines, Gorelick, political donations). JFKize it like what’s his name did with the Kennedy murder…. you know… fill in the blanks where you don’t know or can’t prove what happened.

Well, isn’t that special? I guess they haven’t noticed the flood of vile, left wing crap that Hollywood has been puking for years and years.

The hilarious thing is how much the political attacks prove the point the filmmakers are making. It’s like the left can’t help themselves.
Silence would be a better strategy if they didn’t want people to see this movie – making a fuss draws attention.
I guess they’re just so mad that they don’t have a 100% lock on Hollywood that they can’t keep their gobs shut.

I bet he wrote it before he even saw the movie.

I came here 8 years ago, became a citizen after 5 years, and still, to this day, wonder, how anybody can be here and trash the U.S. of A.
I guess my biggest question is:
Why are they still here? Why not go to Cuba or Venezuela and put their money where their mouth is.

Screw NYC liberals. The one thing I miss least about that Godawful city.
Dr. Manhattan on October 4, 2008 at 11:08 AM
Well, I’m convinced. I’ll see if I can talk the little woman into a matinee. I watched 27 Dresses with her … I think its my turn to pick (although Katherine Heigl made that rather watchable).
It’s always like that. Here in Nashville, during the build-up to the Iraq War … it was our local Iraqi and Kurdish population that took to the streets waving American flags.
Immigrants always love America. Because they have a realistic view of the simple truth. They know what its like elsewhere; they know how precious freedom is.
That’s why I always laugh when I hear liberals claim conservatives are “anti-immigrant.” Puh-leeze. Immigrants are the greatest Americans – especially immigrants from the hell holes of Africa. We have a large Somali population here, and they are the nicest, most patriotic folks you’ll ever meet.
They know truth. Simple reality.
And another simple reality: if we could get enough LEGAL immigrants into this country – especially from Africa and Asia – Democrats would never win another election.

I saw it yesterday here in St. Louis at a 4:00 showing to a full theater, not as young as I might have liked to see. It was not Zucker’s best but was certainly above average for what passes for Hollywood fare these days. Mel Brooks certainly did worse with Space Balls and History of the World I and 2. I thought it suffered visually, might have done better in Black & White as a retro homage to Capra but Zucker’s work has never emphasized Cinematography.
I shall be returning once or twice with as many other people I can get to take along. If we want conservative material to be issued by Hollywood we absolutely must support these kind of efforts!

Because they deeply love their country and are ashamed that it has become an evil and corrupt totalitarian police state. The work to free us and bring the utopian pleasures found in places like the tropical paradise of Cuba where everyone is free, in perfect health, wealthy and smarter due to world class free education.

Similarly, when I go to Germany – which I do frequently for business – the only people I meet who are almost uniformly not anti-US and/or Bush-haters are the ones from the former East Germany.

Oh yeah? Well we got both Frost/Nixon AND W previewed before hand. The audience laughed at the obvious attempt to piss it off.

Hey. Take it easy on Spaceballs. Not subtle, but a classic IMHO.
CanadianGuy on October 4, 2008 at 11:19 AM
I saw it last night in Midland/Odessa, Texas. I thought people might boo when the W trailer came on but no one did.
Overall, I didn’t think it was as funny as Airplane or Naked Gun, but it did have some really good moments. I was surprised to see a cameo by a certain celebrity. I would love to know why this particular celebrity would be in this movie. I don’t want to spoil it by saying the name, even though many of you probably already know who I am talking about.

Good question. I think the person is not as stupid as many believe, which is unfortunate they stoop so low to make themselves appear that way. I respect someone much less when they’re putting on an act of stupidity and naivety than if they really were.
Definitely not one our side would quickly claim.

Patrick S on October 4, 2008 at 11:25 AM
Why? As if a serious movie would make a difference? The people that want to see that kind of movie don’t need to see it because we already know. The douche’s that NEED to see it are too lazy to take the time to get educated and watch it. Knowing that they need to get educated interferes with their ability to watch “American Idol” without realizing what a exercise in stupidity it is. Ergo they stick their heads up their asses every time reality stares them in the face.

Yea I’d love to see American carol if THE DAMN THEATERS WHERE I LIVE WOULD PLAY THEM.
There is suppression going on. My best bud down in Florida saw it. The theatre squashed it in the tiniest room and didn’t have many times for it.

Yes, your right now that I think on it. Thats what comes of not fact checking in the race to post. I remember it being planned, but as Part One was such a disappointment, (which explains it’s never having been made,) I suppose I wasn’t paying attention when part two never arrived.
Nyog_of_the_Bog on October 4, 2008 at 11:37 AM
Saw it. Not really at the same level as the first Airplane! or Naked Gun. A lot of over-the-top humor at times, but hell, who hasn’t wanted to shoot an ACLU attorney at one time or another.
GarandFan on October 4, 2008 at 11:43 AM
My review of the review:
The guy who went in to see the movie? Wow…not exactly the brightest bulb in the bunch. Let’s review his statements:
“It was slanted.” Really? You think it would be slanted? What, did you expect the usual liberal lovefest? Did you think the same with Maher’s cinematic abortion as well? Or was that just “telling it as it is”?
“You sit there, feeling like you’ve been tortured.” Yes, because they bring in waterboards for all the lefties while watching the movie. Seriously, watching a movie from a different viewpoint is “torture” for this guy? I’m sorry, what film school did you come out of? Here’s a hint: get a paper hat and a spatula. Burger King needs a new fry cook, and you seem to have the aptitude for it.
“It seems to be obsessed by Michael Moore.” Really? Hey, MIT, one of your engineers apparently ran away. Tell Einstein here to watch a trailer before seeing a movie. I’m surprised that those posters with lead actor–you know, one who surprisingly looks a lot like Michael Moore?–didn’t tip him off.
“How JFK ends up being a Conservative’s hero, as a Democrat, is just one of the stretches that David Zucker’s got.” This is about as close to being a smart question they guy’s got, and, anyone who spent more than 10 minutes in any high school History class could tell you, today’s liberals aren’t the same as the Democrats from 40 years ago. JFK’s beliefs are far, far closer to today’s mainstream conservative beliefs than the Democrats. Time changes, political movement changes, bell-bottoms, mousse for men, Zoot Suits lose their trendiness.
Yeah, good thing he’s giving a fair, honest, and intelligent review of this movie. Hey, buddy, I think Beverly Hills Chihuahua just opened. Hint hint: it features dogs. Talking ones. I know, I’m ruining the surprise for you. Sorry.
Incidentally, the guy who said, “I was not born in this country. I am, clearly, a foreigner…”
Honestly, I would have not guess that until he said that. Not being snarky–dead serious. Besides, even if you’re not born in this country doesn’t necessarily make you a “foreigner.” You could have lived in this country for decades, and so long as you had gotten your citizenship, I really don’t see how one could label himself a “foreigner.” (It’s the “clearly” part that, frankly, took me aback for a second.) In the words of John McClane, “Welcome to the party, pal.”

My wife and I saw it last night. Theater was reasonably crowded – crowd was almost ALL conservative/Republican (a chorus a boos rang out at the end of the “W” trailer). Keep in mind, we live in the now blue suburban hell of Washington, DC.
The movie? Totally campy and pretty darn cheesy. But I liked it! Frankly, it was worth seeing it just for its huge slant to the right; something we rarely get to see on the big screen. Of course, I didn’t go into this flick with many expectations, and that did the trick (yes, a lot of a the best lines I’d already seen in the movie’s previews). It was fun though. Not the best editing or acting, but fun nonetheless. Go see it and have a blast.

Rottentomatoes has “An American Carol’ at 43% Fresh (A film that rates 65% or better is considered ‘Fresh’) With only seven reviewers posted (4 rotten, 3 fresh) no consensus has been reached, and as noted above, all of the ‘rotten’ posts mention politics or conservatives in some way or form.
Hell, I may go see it for Bill O’Reilly’s cameo!

Jack Deth on October 4, 2008 at 11:57 AM
I saw it, and I thought it was really good.
Some very funny parts, not as many cringe-inducing parts that are common in this type of movie. Many of the gags have been done before in Airplane, Naked Gun, and so forth, but they can still be funny. Plus, Leslie Nielsen is just funny on screen, no matter what he does, for some reason.
The sad part is, the 2 largest national chain theatres near me didn’t even offer the movie. I had to to drive 2 towns over, and it was in the smallest theatre they had.
I called one of the theatres that didn’t show it, and they explained it was only in a limited release. I don’t recall reading that anywhere.
As for the reviewer referenced, people like him really can’t grasp that the current Dem party is NOT the party of JFK. This really wasn’t a Dem vs. GOP movie, it took on liberals and the blame America first crowd.
If Democrats want to throw their support behind nutty liberal college professors, the ACLU, Michael Moore, Rosie O’donnel, etc… I think that’s great.
reaganaut on October 4, 2008 at 11:58 AM
Mrs. B and I went to the very first showing right after lunch yesterday. It was MUCH better than I expected. Go see it. It’s well worth the price of admission and I can almost guarantee you will enjoy yourself.
But you know how they show a gazillion trailers before the main feature? This time they showed only two. Guess which two they showed.
The first one was the oliver stone film “W.”, with a red period, don’t cha know. And the second one was an upcoming movie about Richard Nixon and David Frost’s interview back after Watergate.
Yep. Agenda much, hollywierd?
Anyway, “An American Carol” has a lot of laughs in it and several times the audience in the theater where we were got vocal. It was fun! Go support some brave Conservatives who are taking a very real risk by participating in this film. I want to see a LOT more movies like this.

It’s the only Romance language that retains Latin declensions. Even continental Spaniards have a hard time understanding them.
Ironically, the Potuguese have no problem understanding Spanish, Italian, French – even Romanian, believe it or not.

I saw “An American Carol” last night and I give it a “B”. I’m not a real big fan of the “Airplane”-style humor, but I liked this one.
The waaaaay-too-short scene with Jon Voight as George Washington was absolutely the best, most poignant part of the film.

The blatant attempt to crush the spirit of the GOP is palpable. I see it everywhere, even in the trailers that were chosen to play before the feature.
No. Conservative boosterism is EXACTLY what we need. It’s what Reagan was all about and it’s the only way the Conservative message will spread.
techno_barbarian on October 4, 2008 at 12:14 PM
The language wasn’t too bad. There was some campy violence, which probably led to the PG-13. Also some sexual references that they may or may not “get”.
reaganaut on October 4, 2008 at 12:14 PM
I caught the first show yesterday morning. It was better than I expected. Definitely enjoyed it a lot more than Tropic Thunder. The only trailer was for Four Christmases so I guess the theater management wasn’t trying to piss people off.
My favorite moment would be a toss up between the Rosie O’Connell bit and when the ACLU zombies started ragging on Malone.

My wife was born in Vietnam. She lost everything when her country was overtaken. She escaped to the US as one of the original boat people. She has a deep love for this country that cannot be matched. Ask the Vietnamese, the Cuban, the Hungarian refugees, and anyone else who has come here to escape communist controlled countries…and they will say the samething: GOD BLESS AMERICA!

You appreciate that which you never felt entitled to
Read some of what “Jack London” wrote: his English ( which he taught himself ) was better than most Americans, and he made the most of his opportunity to live and write here
Janos Hunyadi on October 4, 2008 at 12:21 PM
Completely agree! That was the best scene in the film and it was way too short. They missed a huge opportunity to educate there.
I’d love to see some movies, both comedies and dramas that tell the story about just what’s gone on in the past 8 years alone. The view has been skewed so far to the left that it approaches absurdity.
A big boxoffice hit for An American Carol might just give the many Conservatives there are in the movie and media industries the courage and incentive to feed that starving market.
The left is at war with us, and they punish Conservatives (if they know you are one) by blacklisting you. Been there done that. Try making a living as an independent producer when the slightest whiff of non-”Progressive” leanings gets you totally ignored for work you’re really good at. Most of the money folks and the people who make the money decisions are very lefties. That’s just a fact.
techno_barbarian on October 4, 2008 at 12:22 PM
I saw it yesterday was pretty good I think. remembering the movie today is cracking me up more than yesterday. The whole slavery thing had me in stitches and the “Hava Nagila” part about killed me.
they put the movie in the smallest theater in the house. the times it was showing were good though.
it was also playing at 2 of the mega-plexes here in town and all the times for those showings seem reasonable. (its still playing I should say) turn out was about 70% full in the theater I attended. It made me happy to see so many folks out to see it. all in all decent movie hope they do more in the future. (practice makes perfect)

So you been to school
For a year or two
And you know youve seen it all
In daddys car
Thinkin youll go far
Back east your type dont crawl
Play ethnicky jazz
To parade your snazz
On your five grand stereo
Braggin that you know
How the niggers feel cold
And the slums got so much soul
Its time to taste what you most fear
Right guard will not help you here
Brace yourself, my dear
Its a holiday in cambodia
Its tough, kid, but its life
Its a holiday in cambodia
Dont forget to pack a wife
Youre a star-belly sneech
You suck like a leach
You want everyone to act like you
Kiss ass while you bitch
So you can get rich
But your boss gets richer off you
Well youll work harder
With a gun in your back
For a bowl of rice a day
Slave for soldiers
Till you starve
Then your head is skewered on a stake
Now you can go where people are one
Now you can go where they get things done
What you need, my son.
Is a holiday in cambodia
Where people dress in black
A holiday in cambodia
Where youll kiss ass or crack
Pol pot, pol pot, pol pot, pol pot, etc.
And its a holiday in cambodia
Where youll do what youre told
A holiday in cambodia
Where the slums got so much soul.

We went to see it last night with our yutes. We all thought it was funny and so did most of the audience. I live in a solid red state and I too was shocked no one booed the “W” trailer. However, with the “crap sandwich” that just got passed and signed, I believe many in the theater are not kindly disposed to “W” at this exact moment. Nevertheless, the movie was good and I do hope there are many “feature” films made in the future about our current military that are much akin to the late 30’s and 40’s films all of us love so much. Did anyone have trouble with the sound at their viewing? We did not know if it was the theater or the film itself that had sort of a scratchy sound.
To all those that are immigrating, or have immigrated, “WELCOME!” and glad you are here. Many a proud American’s voice is silent by a press that I am sure closely resembles the press of the country you left behind. It may not have deteriorated yet to the level of your former country, but unfortunately we are slow on the uptake of lessons history has taught us. But there are many out here fighting daily in our own ways to take back our nation. It is a slow and at times tedious and often discouraging fight. But the American spirit that brought you here is alive and well. I believe the Left in this election may have kicked over the proverbial hornets nest with their overly aggressive campaign for socialism. Good luck and best wished to you all. Feel free to join in on the fight for America; we need all the help we can get out here.

My husband and I went last with three of our kids (ages 17, 15, and 11). A family bonding experience. We had a great time. Just when I would think that some of the humor was a bit too over-the-top, I’d notice that my husband (who’s a bit more liberal than me), would be giggling uncontrollably. I guess it’s a guy thing. Anyway, Zucker has never been known for subtle or restrained humor. The film has many, many laughs, and so many delicious bits that I’m happily willing to forgive the occasional cheesiness and uneven patches. It also provided us with some great discussion material for the drive home with the kids. Good teaching moments.

I live in north-central NJ and there’s a good dozen movie theaters within 20 miles of my house. Only 1 large theater and 2 overall are showing An American Carol. They’re all showing Spike Lee’s new film, “Miracle at St. Anna” and tons of other garbage though (ex. Beverly Hills Chihuahua). I guess I’ll drive the distance to the 20-plex that actually showing the film instead of all the 12-plex’s nearby that couldn’t bother to do so.

My foreign born friends also wonder in amazement at how many native born citizens don’t take advantage of the opportunities in the pursuit of happiness that are laid at their feet in America.

You’re correct reaganaut, the movie was not a limited release it was released nation wide in over 2,000 theaters. Why some theaters didn’t show it I couldn’t tell you. A similar thing happened here in AZ when the movie “Orgazmo” was released, you couldn’t find it in ANY theater here in AZ. The reason (I assume) is the movie really bashed the Mormon religion in a very raunchy way, with a tie into the the porn industry.
After having seen the movie Orgazmo I can see why some would be offended by the movie, especially those of the Mormon faith, however supression of freedom of speech is still supression of one of our fundamental rights as American citizens regardless of how offensive that speech (in this case a movie) may be.
I did more than my part to support this movie in the hopes it would do better than “W” at the box office opening weekend. In fact some of you may remember I posted that I was in a contest being run by a company marketing the movie on-line. I participated in the contest for almost three weeks, gaining “impact points” whenever I e-mailed the trailer and invited others to the site to be “An American Caroler.”
Some fellow HA’ers even gave me their e-mail addresses to receive the trailer so I could gain points (1GooDDaDDY was one of them) and I thank all of you that helped me out.
I ended up 4th overall in the contest and won an official autographed movie poster and a “Michael Malone” hat. Those that placed in the top 5 were also to be awarded two tickets to attend the cast and crew screening in LA yesterday, unfortunately it seems the contest was not well planned as they didn’t officially end the contest until October 1st and didn’t announce the winners of the tickets nor provide information on where (in LA) and when the screening would be until October 2nd, the day before the screening. In other words those of us in the top 5 were only given 26 hours notice that we had won and it is my understanding none of the top 5 that won tickets were able to attend due to the short notice, which is understandable considering we were only given 26 hours advanced notice.
Despite the fact the contest was poorly planned and executed and I was unable to attend the cast and crew screening I still support this film as we need to let Hollywood know we want more conservative movies and not just the usual lefty America bashing propaganda garbage they are constantly pumping out!

pursuit of happiness is a conservative direction something that liberalism doesn’t understand because they are always angry.
the world (sky) is falling, man (people) are/is the cause, abort before birth, I’m entitled because I am, I need the government to take care of me.

It’s got some good stuff, but a boring stretch in the middle. I don’t care if it falls flat sometimes, it is awesome to see “right wing” comedy. I’ll support this stuff anytime!!!

Good thing she didn’t interview the ‘foreigner’ very long, he would have made me cry. Yes, I would tell him, many of the people who were born here don’t have a clue what they take for granted. God bless that beautiful young man.

Laughing, uh that is, Lisping Man @ 2:37 would probably want to pick up a history book and compare JFK’s beliefs to those of the average conservative.
If I’m not mistaken, he’d be considered about as conservative as McCain, circa present day.

I have a date with my hubbie to see it tomorrow. I hope someone asks for my opinion.

Liberals should know that An American Carol is not anti-liberal. It’s just pro-American. It’s not about making the Michael Moore stand-in give up liberalism, just teaching him that he’s wrong about America and American greatness.
What could a liberal find objectionable about that?
Also, people should stay through the credits. There’s a short little tag afterward that’s both funny and a little twisted.

Great point. This movie might just win over some of the not-very-politically-aware types who get their current affairs talking points from John Stewart, SNL, George Clooney and MTV. We need to sugar-coat the reality pill for them.

Yahoo is giving it an A- review, that is a good review.
Here is the link we are going to see it today.

D’oh! Left too soon. Oh well, just have to see it a second time and add to the box office take.

I am laid off right now and scrimping and saving any and all dollars I can, but my wife and I decided this was a good enough cause to drop the scrilla and see it.
I gave it a B, but the banter on the walk out from all the vets was worth every single penny we spent!

I saw it last night and give it 3 1/2 stars. It was amusing through out with a few big laughs. In particular was the Rosie O’donnell character and her film shown on Bill O’R’s show. While I wasn’t laughing out loud throughout the film, there were many people who were letting it go.
It was genuinely refreshing to hear unapologetic slams at libtards in a hollywood movie. Emotionally satisfying like Bill O’R screaming at Barney Frank. Intellectually shallow, but viscerally fulfilling.
On the way home, my liberal wife mentioned how the movie put here in a bad mood. I said “Yeah, it’s too bad that politics has to ruin a good movie.” To which she replied that they usually don’t do that in movies. To which I pointed out to her that she never notices it because the movie makers are on her side.
In the end, AAC was over the top, but necessary to highlight the bias in hollywood and, by extension, the media.

I saw it last night with my wife. I’m a bit more political compared to her. She thought it was very good-I thought it was great. Excellent acting and plenty of laughs. I thought it was a mild PG13, a bit of sexual reference and mild violence(lots of slapping-no worse than the three stooges)Nothing gratuitous and most kids have seen a lot worse.

What about people who immigrate to America in order to plant bombs and kill people? Not everyone loves freedom, in fact lots of people certainly do not.
aengus on October 4, 2008 at 2:21 PM
The paid liberal reviewer didn’t like it, what a shock. All the more reason to go see it.
infidel4life on October 4, 2008 at 2:26 PM
Saw it at the 3:20 PM show – 90% full!
Sound went out at 10 minutes in; management had to give out refunds, but most stayed and watched with fixed (low volume) sound.
Later that evening I used my refund to watch Samuel Jackson’s new thriller, Lakeside Terrace. 10% full.

Fixed that for ya.

I have to work all weekend, but I ordered a ticket online just so the theater would be able to add the ticket to their sales breakdown…It was worth the cost of a ticket…

A movie theater choosing not to show an almost pornographic(or a good movie like this)movie is NOT suppression of free speech. Or are you advocating forcing a theater to show a movie that they will lose money on or are morally aghast of just because you don’t want to put forth the effort to travel to see it. Businesses have the right to sell the product they want (at least until O takes that right away). If they don’t want to show An American Carol, take your money elsewhere for all your movies.
Sorry to be preachy, but so many people confuse the Government suppressing free speech with a business decision based on an ideology.
