VP Debate analysis: Palin hits home run

Normally, I would have written this post last night, but as it turns out, it was almost impossible to do any writing at The Patriot’s event last night at Trocadero’s.  In a way, that turned out to be a blessing, as it got my head out from behind the laptop screen and allowed a greater focus on the debate itself, as well as the crowd of hundreds that came to Trocadero’s to watch it with the Northern Alliance Radio Network.  And I can tell you that the crowd had a great time watching this debate.

VP debates usually feature two people attacking two other people who aren’t on stage.  In this case, we could make that three people.  Joe Biden did a good job in carrying the Democratic talking points last night, attacking both George Bush and John McCain and making the case that they’re one and the same.  Biden actually did a much better job staying on point in this regard than did Barack Obama in his first debate, sticking with it all evening long.  Biden delivered a good performance in the debate, sounding authoritative even while telling whoppers, such as the claim that NATO had driven Hezbollah from Lebanon, a flabbergasting moment from someone whose strength is supposed to be foreign policy.  Overall, though, Biden delivered a competent performance, as he almost always does in debates.

However, that simply wasn’t enough.  Sarah Palin demonstrated both the wisdom of adding her to the ticket and the folly of the McCain campaign’s press bubble for the last four weeks.  Palin was confident, assertive to the point of aggressive, knowledgeable, and open.  She repeatedly went after Biden, which is not usually a tactic seen much in VP debates (candidates usually attack the presidential nominees), and Biden had no answer for Palin.  On foreign policy, she offered good answers, made only a couple of rhetorical stumbles in segues when she wanted to change the subject, and delivered an exceptionally fine performance.

In fact, Palin had an answer ready for the entire Democratic strategy of tying McCain to Bush, exposing it as a tiresome and empty allegation:

PALIN: Say it ain’t so, Joe, there you go again pointing backwards again. You preferenced your whole comment with the Bush administration. Now doggone it, let’s look ahead and tell Americans what we have to plan to do for them in the future. …

No, in fact, when we talk about the Bush administration, there’s a time, too, when Americans are going to say, “Enough is enough with your ticket,” on constantly looking backwards, and pointing fingers, and doing the blame game. …

But for a ticket that wants to talk about change and looking into the future, there’s just too much finger-pointing backwards to ever make us believe that that’s where you’re going.

Biden then attempted to bluster his way through a response, using a “past is prologue” excuse, but essentially proving her point.  The Democrats have run their 2004 campaign all over again as the anti-Bush ticket, this time with a less-offputting nominee.  Palin has been the only person in this campaign to effectively make that point.

Moreover, thanks to the media reaction to Palin on the basis of her interviews with Katie Couric and Charles Gibson, expectations had been set rather low.  Biden and the Democrats talked about her experience at debates as a way of raising that bar, but one has to doubt whether Biden really believed she could play on his level.  He seemed flustered at times — at one point tugging on his collar as she attacked him, to the delight of the Trocadero’s crowd.  Even without those low expectations, she beat Biden — and the nation got a look at the real Sarah Palin.

Will this boost McCain’s standing in this race?  I think it will, and I thought that even before I saw the Frank Luntz focus group.  McCain needed this debate victory tonight, and it may restart the Palin phenomenon, just in time for the final stretch of the election.  This time, though, the McCain campaign has to get Palin out in press conferences, interviews, and contact with the people.  She’s sharp, able, and energetic, and she could win this election for McCain if he would just let her.

Update: I want to thank Jazz Shaw for moderating last night’s chat room, and his take on the debate is here.  Bottom line:

Point to Palin for the race from me. The pundits will tear the individual statements apart for weeks, but Governor Palin not only beat expectations, but beat Biden fair and square.

The problem is that McCain will probably screw it up by talking about earmarks, instead of attacking the democrats who got us in this mess. He could have “named names” as he claimed he would do, but so far, he’s done nothing to give me confidence that he’ll score many points in his next debate.

I hope I’m wrong.

Sarah was great.

You must have been watching a different debate than I was, Ed. I guess verifying her pronunciation of the word “nuclear” was not part of the McCain team’s vetting process. The anti-banker, anti-”greed” demagoguery really shook up my faith in the ticket. I was strong for McCain before last night, but now I think I’ll just stay home.

Not even for the sake of the campaign do I want to see a bump in the polls; I want to see it to show the blowhard Washington journalists, and snotty, rude “feminists”, that we don’t want more slick, elite, “I’m better than you” politicians! I want Maureen Dowd to understand that we don’t care what she thinks- I want NBC, CBS and ABC to choke on their own condescention!

After all the ugliness of Washington this past week, I want to believe there’s some opportunity to feel better about something- or someone.

Palin for President. McCain for Sun City Board Member. What a waste of great talent, but then the McCain campaign never disappoints in fumbling the ball. Sarah pulled their collective asses out of the fire (for now) last night.

I agree 100%, I think that the campaign starts now, and McCain needs to find his voice, in a way similar to how Hillary found hers in the last month of her campaign…be a conservative populist. Go to PA, OH, VA, CO, and NV and take the fight to the dems…We can win.

Talk about how McCain has one more mission: Peace, Prosperity and Security for America.

Greasy Joe could not even get that right! A man out of touch with the people.

Sarah Palin demonstrated both the wisdom of adding her to the ticket and the folly of the McCain campaign’s press bubble for the last four weeks.

One of the many reasons why McCain has aggravated me these last 4 weeks. If had taken his post-convention bounce and enthusiasm, attacked Obama where he was weakest and used Sarah as much as possible, he’d be on the verge of victory. Instead, his doltish campaign cocooned her for so long that now he’s got to try and be Captain Comeback.

Physics Geek on October 3, 2008 at 8:06 AM

It’s time to turn her loose and let her talk. All day, every day, in every format.

No more holding her back Johnny Mc.

The “past is prologue” bit is fine when you’re criticizing someone based on their own past, like when she hammered on Obama and Biden’s respective records in the Senate, and their prior comments in the Dem debates. But George W. Bush’s past doesn’t tell us much about a McCain-Palin administration.

She certainly has a way of energizing the base, she did it again last night but we’ll need more than our base to win. It was a fun night. Not quite as much fun as her convention performance but a close second. Right about now I suspect the media has 40 more dumpster divers bound for Alaska!

repvoter on October 3, 2008 at 8:09 AM

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking about McCain’s silence on the bailout blame- I wondered why Brit Hume didn’t go there last night when he was asking Krauthammer about why he wasn’t taking the opportunity to bash the Dem’s on it.
I think he’s come out swinging once the bill is either passed or a dead deal- it would get ugly if he trashed them while it’s still in debate.

anniekc on October 3, 2008 at 8:09 AM

Bottom line…Plugsy won on points, Palin won on guts and soul.
When she slowed down, she was devastating. Especially when she pushed back on Mullen’s (?) comments about the surge in Afghanistan, I was LMAO.

Bringing up Obama’s comments about air raiding villages….priceless.

hippie_chucker on October 3, 2008 at 8:10 AM

I would have liked to have seen her a bit more “off the leash”. To me, she seemed to go back to the campaign buttons of “maverick” and “energy” a few too many times. What she should have done is highlight her life a bit more. Biden talked about families around the kitchen table, Palin should have gone “been there, done that”
1) talk about working as a commercial fisherman in Alaska — lots of hard work with no guarantee of success, and if you do pull in a nice season, say $250K worth, then Obama’s going to tax you.
2) talk about her daughter who’s getting married — is the $700 billion bailout going to be her wedding present?
3) highlight how she’s the only one in the race who’s not a millionaire.

Biden likes to talk about growing up in Scranton as part of the working class. Palin is the working class. Highlight that.

The spin is in fast and furious on the morning shows. MSNBC is slimply saying. “nice show, but insignificant”.

McCain needs to name, names. Barney Frank was railed by Bill O’Rielly and you can tell he’s scared.

Hit then truthfully, hit them hard.

The American People are scared of teh failing economy and these folks on the left and the MSM are turning attention away from ACORN, FM/FM, AIG, Leman Bros and Franks, Waters, Obama and all teh other dems involved in this debacle. If McCain doesn’t turn off this mantra this downturn is just “8 years of failed Bush and republican economics, not only will this election be lost, every election in our lifetime will be framed as dems being the only ones you can trust for the economy.” McCain can’t let that happen and it won’t matter how well Sarah did.

Debbie Downer Mode off/

Sarah did great. I am so proud. No matter what happens, she’ll always have the debate with the 30 year Senate vet who she stood toe to toe with.

hawkdriver on October 3, 2008 at 8:11 AM

By the way that Joe Biden is one heck of a liar. This is the problem with Governor Palin relativly newness. If she had a little more experience with Joe’s and John Maccain’s record she would have tore him a new one for all the lies that Biden peddaled with some confidence last night. Yet I think she let an oppurtunity to really destroyed him. She won but man she could have destroyed that asshat….

Come on McCain, this is the 2nd time your VP choice has bailed you out. Time to pony up and do your job right and bolster yourself up.

She doesn’t pronounce the word the same way as I do. Means nothing at all, and she speaks as many in the US do. (btw, I say Korfee for Coffee).

As for the populism stuff, I agree, a little hard to hear at times, but in the midst of the biggest financial scandal/swindle in our lifetimes, it seemed appropriate, even necessary.

What ticked me off was the drill now baby stuff and the feeding the hungry markets with Alaskan energy combined with the need to reduce our carbon emissions. Yuck. At that moment I was reminded that even if McCain wins, we have to start fighting him every day too.

Palin didn’t completely tank. But she’s benefiting from the low expectations she set for herself. The first half hour she was teetering on disaster. She eeked through, pretty much ignoring the questions and reciting what she’s memorized the over the past week.

I mean, just blatant disregard for questions. She may have well been saying, “I can’t think on my feet, but I want to tell you about my record in Alaska.”

that kind of thing amateur hour. borderline embarrassing for her.

And, can we just say that if you repeatedly call yourself a “maverick,” you’re no longer a “maverick”? Seriously. Did you know Palin and McCain are mavericks? Don’t believe me? Rewatch the debate last night.

Now, I can understand the giddiness you all feel about her not having a complete meltdown. But Biden won that debate last night. There were a few times he completely nailed her and she had NO answer. She just took it.

Don’t confuse a non-nuclear meltdown with a “home run.”

Tom_Shipley on October 3, 2008 at 8:17 AM

This is something that McCain can build on. Talk to the people, comparing McCain to Bush is looking back, you saw what real harm government can do, if you are happy with the economy you’ll love Obama’s medical plan…and it is time to start calling out the people who have been managing our economy.

McCain/Palin08

hawkdriver on October 3, 2008 at 8:17 AM

Biden’s statement on Pakistan was almost as bad as his Hezbollah answer (Hezbollah is now “legitimate” in his eyes?). But the Pakistan statements were all over the place “they have nuclear weapons – they’ve built 7000 madrassas – we need to give them more money – we should attack them” – huh?

Anyway, if McCain-Palin start connecting the dots on the Democrat mandates requiring banks give risky loans to unqualified borrowers, they will win this election. O’Reilly going nuts on Barney Frank last night was a start, blogs and others are getting the point across somewhat too, but the candidates themselves need to make the point repeatedly.

Biden came off as aloof, and condescending, especially the way that he kept looking at Ifill and laughing while Sarah was talking, as if to say, “can you believe she’s even on the same stage as me (and you)… by the way Gwen, can’t wait for the book!”

Perhaps the campaign has been working with Sarah, getting the narrative together, “in training” so to speak for the next 30 days, which will be brutal.

Hopefully now, they send her out, let her connect, and make sure she is everywhere. Also I hope to see her stumping in areas where those on our team are up for re-election.

Disagree… somewhat. I would NOT let her talk in an “editable” venue with anyone deemed unfriendly in the MSM. I would, however, let her hold tons of press conferences before/after events where there are multiple cameras present so no one can control what comes out…. Now if McC can somehow regain the offense, we might still win this thing.

Yes, as soon as the bailout a done deal [UGHHH!] McCain must come out swinging at Barney Frank/FM?FM. Last night, O’Reilly set it up by making a spectacle of himself, and now the ball’s in John’s court.

petefrt on October 3, 2008 at 8:24 AM

Was McCain’s main goal to win the nomination as his due based on it being “his turn”, or to win the election? – JiangxiDad on October 3, 2008 at 8:19 AM

Good question. I’m inclined to believe it was both, and tht he has become a prisoner of his own bipartisan narrative – a kind of internal Stockholm Syndrome, if you will.

ManlyRash on October 3, 2008 at 8:25 AM

You must have been watching a different debate than I was, Ed. I guess verifying her pronunciation of the word “nuclear” was not part of the McCain team’s vetting process.

hicsuget on October 3, 2008 at 7:59 AM

I’ve already seen this come up as a meme from the left.

But it makes no sense at all.

From Merriam-Webster’s Online Dictionary’s definition of nuclear:

Though disapproved of by many, pronunciations ending in \\-kyə-lər\\ have been found in widespread use among educated speakers including scientists, lawyers, professors, congressmen, United States cabinet members, and at least two United States presidents and one vice president. While most common in the United States, these pronunciations have also been heard from British and Canadian speakers.

So, can we kill this meme now?

Religious_Zealot on October 3, 2008 at 8:25 AM

George Soros is not a happy man this morning… Muwhahahahahah!!!

Right, and the only consequence of last night that scares me. Soros is behind the lions share of the 527s and a lot of the liberal media. Definately in bed with the hollywood elites who are flapping their gums. What level will they think they need to go to counter her solid performance?

hawkdriver on October 3, 2008 at 8:25 AM

When I was in airborne training, I broke a bone in my foot.

I wrapped my foot in an Ace bandage, laced my boots up tight, attacked the course, and got my wings.

By the end of every day, I would be almost passed out from the pain; but I told myself, “This doesn’t last forever: I only have to do this for six more days (etc.)”

Here’s the point:

McCain has to lace up his boots, attack this campaign, and give us a really, really strong close.

He needs to stop acting erratically (e.g., when he suspended his campaign).

He needs to stop acting like an idiot (e.g., believing that the MSM and his buddies across the aisle will really rally to him).

If he doesn’t, the new name for this campaign will be “The Bataan Death March.”

Palin in 2012!

If you really think Sarah Palin is the best the Republicans will be able to offer in 2012 (assuming a McCain loss), then God bless you.

BOSNIACS?

Am I the ONLY one who heard Biden say that?

It’s spelled Bosniak, and it’s what we usually call “Bosnian Muslim”.

This is a derivative of quote “I have always voted Republican, never voted democrat, but this year McCain is such a disappointment that I have to vote democrat”.
I hear them on every radio talk show, it is a standard line.
hicsuget was going to vote for McCain like I was going to vote for Obama.
hicsuget, just tell the truth, it makes you look foolish and petty…and it reinforces the stereotype of the nasty, sneaky, liberal who can’t face the truth with facts.
At least tom-shipley and others are open about their liberal bias…you and others should try it.

right2bright on October 3, 2008 at 8:27 AM

How good was Sarah last night? The local Obamatrons on our site were calling it a draw or refusing to talk about it.

Won? That’s silly. Neither’s performance would cause a voter who was disinclined to vote for a particular candidate to change his mind. They both “won” by allowing their principles to fight on.

My advice to McCain and Palin moving forward is to remove the words “Wall Street” from their vocabulary. It’s all about a big, fat Fannie, and ACORN, and if they can’t make that case to the American People then the election is lost.

In this political war, today and tommorrow, will be a media,
pundit, talk radio all out assaualt on last nights debate,
to paint SarahCuda and change the PERCEPTION OF LAST NIGHT!

In last nights debate,SarahCuda, clearly won,she answered
the questions, she even went back to some of the questions
to re-clarified her point after GaffeBiden tried to spin
her answers!!

Governor Sarah Palin,won,period,I missed the debate,but I’m
up to speed overnight, anyhow,Top of the hour News radio,
Lefty websites,op-ed pieces, are now in full assault to destroy SarahCuda, one person said it was scripted, but the
talking points they’re using is “YA SHE WAS GOOD,BUT IN WON’T CHANGE MY MIND”!

For the lefty News and their operatives to deny last nights Stellar,SaraCuda Slaughter of Joe(May I call you Joe)perfo-
rmance is unbelievable and they are in complete “DENIAL
OF THE TRUTH!

So then, why is it that the LIBERAL MSM says Palin lost the
debate!

And if thats the case, why is the Lefty MSM going for broke,
and working overtime to CHANGE THE PERCEPTION OF LAST NIGHT!

Sarah won,and the poll numbers will verify it,and the Liberal MSM know it,thats why in the next two days, the
RNC has to stop THIS OUTRIGHT LIE BY THE LEFT!!!!!

Indeed. Each side has a fairly solid 40% base of support. From this point on, the battle will be for the 20% in the middle – a full quarter of which are clueless Idjit voters swayed only by physical appearences and name recognition.

ManlyRash on October 3, 2008 at 8:32 AM

Enough of this “we’re going to lose” crap! Something’s brewing with McCain for sure. And as far as the upcoming debate, don’t write Sarah off. Remember it was Palin who pulled McCain’s ass out of the fire once to our great surprise. The woman has got it in her. And her lack of confidence lately is due to poor handling which John McCain himself has ordered a halt to. The new word is to “let Sarah be Sarah”. I think she’ll throw Joe’s chestnuts into the fire Thursday and turn her sites on Obama. She’s had enough of being handled and she’s got nothing to lose. HAVE SOME FAITH. IT AINT OVER TILL SARAH SAYS SO.

I think “Bosniak” is a term for ethnic locals in Bosnia and Bosnian refers to anyone who happens to live there – or something like that. I looked it up last night and that’s the gist I got of it. Bosniak isn’t a term used often, but apparently the word is legit.

But the bigger point is that Joe seems to think the Yogoslavian carve up model is the answer to ethnic conflict in all cases. You know, just carve up any country with mutiple ethinicities into several little tiny countries. It’s a bad idea in most cases because it leads to more ethinic cleansing and also to tiny states that aren’t really viable. It should only be used as a last resort. But that’s what he wanted to do in Iraq.

Again, Palin is benefiting from her low expectations. People were rightly worried about a disaster, and she teetered on one for the first half hour.

Palin lost because Biden came off as clearly the more experienced, articulate and knowledgeable. Palin looked amateurish… and sure, that seems to play to a particular portion of the republican base, but to most Americans, that’s a bad thing.

Here are some polls for you to disregard:

CNN/Opinion Research Biden 51 Palin 36
CBS Biden 46 Palin 21
Fox Biden 61 Palin 39

***20 bucks says McCain waits until the bailout bill passes, THEN GOES NUCLEAR ON RAINES, JIM JOHNSON, DODD, BARNEY FRANK, ETC…. – battleoflepanto1571 on October 3, 2008 at 8:02 AM

He blew his chance for that when he voted FOR the bill. He should have waited until Biden and Obama voted in favor of the bill, then voted against it and then gone to a mike, saying something like, “This is a pork bill, not a bailout bill”. He could then have named names, but instead he voted in favor of the bill. He blew his chance to score big…

golfer1 on October 3, 2008 at 8:37 AM

Over on Newsbusters, they have all the “pundit” clips from last night and this morning, and it’s no surprise how “poorly” they felt Sarah performed, and how “phenomenal” Joe Biden did. What a bunch of tools! Their commentary simply solidifies their own nasty liberal bias. The women were catty, and the men were condescending.

I can’t wait for the MSM TV to go down as hard as the print media has gone down. They deserve it.

anniekc on October 3, 2008 at 8:37 AM

I’d take this clip of Biden saying: “NATO had driven Hezbollah from Lebanon”

And then show the devastation brought by Hezbollah not long ago and ask current residents of Israel how they feel about an American politician making the above statement and if he’s correct..

Knowing people at the AJC who toured that area with Ralph Peters during the crisis I can assure you Joe’s mastery of foreign policy and world events will be exposed as lacking in depth…

Tom_Shipley on October 3, 2008 at 8:17 AM

Well, I guess the fact checkers disagree with you.

Afghanistan?
Clean Coal?
Taxes?

That was just a few of the examples of Joe having a BLATANT disregard of the truth.

You need to take off your biased colored glasses.

csdeven on October 3, 2008 at 8:37 AM

I will say it, I thought Gwen Ifill did a good job. I did not feel any animosity or feel she was looking for a “fight”.
I thought the questions were very reasonable, ones that the candidates would have studied.
Which surprised me of the amount of factual errors Biden made. Not just hiccups, that happens, but absolute facts regarding voting records, coal plants, energy programs, surges, etc., astounding how little facts he really knows. He has such a breadth of knowledge that most would have not caught how many errors he made because he talked right through them with authority.
As the days pass, you will see the count of how many errors he actually made…Palin didn’t make but a couple (pre-surge numbers 138,000 to 142,000, but actually after this week the will be under) minor ones.
The mark of a good international politician, is where you don’t have to say a lot, but what you say has to be accurate.
Palin won hands down on accuracy. And for those who say she was soft on facts (which is your dream), better to be soft on facts, then to throw out wrong facts. Especially if you are talking to foreign powers. Better to be vague then dishonest.

right2bright on October 3, 2008 at 8:37 AM

WOW!
Last night was Great.
Half way thru my 13 y.o. Daughter tells me “Dad Breath, She’s doing Great and I think she likes to debate, Just look at her smiling.”
My daughter is right, the longer the debate went on the sharper Sarah was, like she almost wanted to continue Debating at the end!
There’s just something incredible about Sarah Palin!
