Awesome: New GOP ad lowers the boom on Dems over subprime disaster

Via Ace. Gut reaction: One of the best ads I’ve seen this year, although part of that feeling admittedly is due to the intensity of my bitterness at the Democrats over this. I want to see them punished for it, this ad punishes them, ergo it starts off already halfway to being a “great” ad. Biases aside, though, try getting and holding a viewer’s attention for 90 seconds on a subject as dry and complicated as mortgage policy. Does this do it? Thanks to the arresting music and graphics, you’d better believe it. More, please. (But leave Bush out of the next one.)

90 seconds. It’s web only, obviously.
somehow, you gotta trim these down.
RNC is flush with cash – given that palin gave them 66 million last month – and needs to run these constantly.
lorien1973 on October 3, 2008 at 5:18 PM
Yeah, saw this earlier. Too bad this couldn’t have been released sooner. Great ad.
carbon_footprint on October 3, 2008 at 5:18 PM
RAAAAAACISSSSTTTT!!!
And homophobic.
saint kansas on October 3, 2008 at 5:19 PM
Now, will ‘The Maverick’ have the gut to hit them hard on this issue?
Unfortunately, not likely.
clancy_wiggum on October 3, 2008 at 5:19 PM
Finally! Now give it heavy airplay. And McCain needs his own version of this.
indythinker on October 3, 2008 at 5:19 PM
Web ads aren’t going to make a difference. Shorter and on TV please.
Spirit of 1776 on October 3, 2008 at 5:19 PM
How can they deny what’s in their own words?
Frank tried on O’Reilly and was slammed for it.
madmonkphotog on October 3, 2008 at 5:19 PM
Excellent. I just hope this is not some internet only thing produced just to please the base. They need to condense this to 30 seconds to a minute in length and plaster it all over the TV in swing states. Great thing is, this is an RNC ad and can be paid for out of the huge war chest.
Mark1971 on October 3, 2008 at 5:19 PM
Not bad, but not deep enough. Like pointing out the obvious…a poor person might not be able to afford ANY mortgage. A middle class person might not be able to afford to buy a mansion. It’s called THE FACTS OF LIFE. And life isn’t fair. If you want fair, go to Cuba.
stonemeister on October 3, 2008 at 5:20 PM
They neglected to mention the > $100K that Obama pulled in from Freddie and Fannie.
flipflop on October 3, 2008 at 5:21 PM
Fannie and Freddie were the darlings of the Congresional Black Caucus. They saw them as ways to get black people into homes. Instead of improving education and cutting taxes to promote jobs, the Democrats and the Black Caucus especially chose government subsidies on a massive scale. Now it is a massive disaster.
It’s not racist to ask why.
indythinker on October 3, 2008 at 5:21 PM
GREAT ad….
Send it to your Dem friends
originalpechanga on October 3, 2008 at 5:21 PM
Here are some trimmings.
The clips of Waters, Meeks, and Frank, just add to the screen the donations amount as they speak – instead of going back to them afterwards. That’s like 5 seconds right there.
Some of the text is un-necessary too, as the follow up quote makes the point perfectly.
lorien1973 on October 3, 2008 at 5:21 PM
Why leave Bush out? He was right.
Damn the talk about hurting the “Republican brand”! Bush was right on this issue. The Republicans were right. The Republican brand is not going to get any better by continuing to let the left pound on Bush.
The collapse wasn’t his fault. The cover-ups and “inventive accounting” at the top of Fannie and Freddie were not his fault.
Abby Adams on October 3, 2008 at 5:22 PM
Mark1971, I think it needs all 90 seconds. This is bigger than a soundbite can handle.
indythinker on October 3, 2008 at 5:22 PM
Isn’t FNC going to call them on the use of Brett Baier’s voice in the ad? Or is that part of the plan to get more views?
rw on October 3, 2008 at 5:22 PM
How is this not on TV? Where was this a week ago when it could have made a difference? UGH.
D0WNT0WN on October 3, 2008 at 5:22 PM
McCain/Palin needs to watch the ad – over and over and over ’till they get it and go forth and repeat it.
toliver on October 3, 2008 at 5:23 PM
I am not clear on the law, but it is possible if the ad mentions Obama, at least some of the funds to pay for it would have to come out of the McCain campaign directly. But like I said, I’m no expert here.
Mark1971 on October 3, 2008 at 5:23 PM
That was brett bair I believe. From a report ran last week. They probably will complain.
lorien1973 on October 3, 2008 at 5:23 PM
Unless you are talking about his signing this bill. In which case, well, too bad. He was right in 2003. And his hand was basically forced in 2008. We’ll see in a bit whether or not it turned out to be the best thing for the country.
Abby Adams on October 3, 2008 at 5:23 PM
They need more of this and they need to run them. The next step is describing how Democrat laws forced lenders to make reckless loan to unqualified people.
The left will see this once and go nuts because they know how effective it will be. We won’t have to wait long to hear “racisim!”.
Ignore it and keep running with it.
forest on October 3, 2008 at 5:24 PM
Yep, they can’t mention candidates directly.
lorien1973 on October 3, 2008 at 5:24 PM

The Obama camp says that “viral” is the key this year, let’s prove them right.

This needs to be the first in a series.

This election would have been won easily by now if this stuff would have been running for weeks, if not months before now, accompanied by investigations, and more ads tying Obama-Biden to it all.
Is Rove on vacation?

Thanks for not breaking your streak, Allah!!
MayBee on October 3, 2008 at 5:29 PM
FINALLY!
It doesn’t go anywhere near far enough, but it’s a nice opening shot.
They need to tie community organizer and ACORN lawyer Barack Obama directly to this crisis. His actions, along with those of others he trained, are one of the main reasons we got into this mess.
There’s a reason the junior senator from Illinois got the second highest campaign contributions from Fannie and Freddie.
This needs to be exposed. It would sink the Obambi campaign if they hit it every day from now until the election.
Do. It. Damnit!
techno_barbarian on October 3, 2008 at 5:29 PM
I’d like one with mock jail bars slamming down. McCain is the only one who can get this into the MSM though.

Notice how this was released right after the bill passed the House. They were waiting.
Mark1971 on October 3, 2008 at 5:29 PM

I wish McCain himself could hammer this in the debate. Why be above the fray if it is not working?! Dennis Miller is right, McCain needs to fight or this is over for him. Rush pointed this out: McCain in his convention speech said, “Fight with me.” We are, but how about you McCain?!
jencab on October 3, 2008 at 5:33 PM
If AP Likes it I’ll love it!
Amadeus on October 3, 2008 at 5:33 PM
Great ad. Like others have stated, it needs to be condensed and put on TV, in every state that matters.
Even if it is only a web ad now, Sean Hannity and Brit Hume will probably start showing it on Fox News. Then Barney Frank, who got chewed out by O’Reilly last night, and possibly others, will start complaining about how unfair Fox is, and maybe the other media will be drawn into covering it.

they need an ad like this on tv. the music is awesome.
venicesurfer on October 3, 2008 at 5:38 PM
Too bad they can’t make them like a three-part episode and put them on a special website viewers can go to and see all episodes. Leave ‘em wanting to know more.
Epsisode 2: Franklin Raines – “riskless investments”
Episode 3: Quick shots of the usual suspects all smiles. Why are they smiling? We know why.
Of course, the viewer actually has to care. Are there any undecideds/independents left who care and can be swayed?
Mr_Magoo on October 3, 2008 at 5:38 PM
This should be a 30-second killer, played everywhere, often. It is by far the strongest argument against “Washington-as-usual”. Put direct blame on the Dems for hurting the whole nation, putting it at severe risk.
Leave out Bush – stress the Bill that McCain co-sponsored in 2005/2006 to tighten up regulation of Fannie Mae AND his warning of looming disaster. Add mugshots of Chris Dodd as well, denying any problem and blocking the Bill – AND link him with Obama as the biggest takers of contributions from Fannie Mae.
(I am not American, simply a Financial Times reader and a conservative. The real truth on the whole stinking mess is being hidden from much of the US public.)
Plus – weave in the Clinton quote of a couple of days ago ?

I’m eating half a helping of crow, but where’s McCain campaigning on this?
All surrogates should be issue two charts: one with a list of names and contribution, and one with a mugshot of each.
And let’s get the officers–Raines and Johnson and their ties to Obama.
The list is endless.
BuckeyeSam on October 3, 2008 at 5:39 PM
Refresh sometimes brings back a video not available. I just watched it.
Bush was all over this. He was constantly bragging about how many low income people were buying homes. This is what caused the crisis. People who could not afford homes buying them with 0% down. Refinancing them with huge fees.

McCain blew his chance by blaming Wall Street because it was the lazy way out. He even had Palin last night blaming Wall Street. (Mrs. Magoo said “That’s not entirely true!” and I almost fell off my chair! She ignores all things political.)
It will be a hard sell to start blaming Dems. There would be some blowback.
He should have spoken the truth and voted no on the bailout. Maverick! You fool!

Trim and split this video into 3 28-second TV spots.
Add a 4th version, telling about how Raines’ ~$100million performance bonus was more important than you keeping your house.
Do audio-only versions for radio.
Run them in Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Florida, Texas and California.
Run them 4 or 5 times per night: maybe Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.
Run them until 9:30PM Pacific time, November 3.

Excellent. They reworked the ad and made it even more powerful and added the Obambi was an ACORN lawyer connection.
I am so glad to see this going viral. America’s pissed off and rightfully so. Let the guilty be sought out and very publicly punished. And make it known far and wide that this was brought on by DEMOCRATS.

As much as I want to see McCain go after the Dem scum, I can totally see how they’d scream racist on him! Those mortgagaes are almost solely owned by minorities, and I’m confident that the Dem’s feel completely covered by the PC police
anniekc on October 3, 2008 at 5:53 PM
So many comments, so few buzz ups. Please people don’t forget to buzz the story if you like it. The Huffs and other Dem sites are dominating social sites like digg, yahoo buzz and technorati. We should change that.
arma_virumque on October 3, 2008 at 5:54 PM
Okay, more please.
The bailout fiasco has passed. Now then, McCain, Palin; get your asses out in front of every damn microphone and pound this sh!t home. Every question (regardless of the topic) should be answered with a complete rundown of Democrat names responsible for the housing crash. If a reporter asks Palin what her favorite food is- she should answer with a brief history of Barrack Obama’s advisor, Raines’ book-cooking at Fannie Mae!
Let’s go on the attack and don’t let up! If we’re going to go down; go down swinging!

“Employers cut 159,000 jobs in September”
Ugh. Employers will probably start dumping jobs in anticipation of tough times ahead. They will want to get ahead of the curve. It’ll be like raising gas prices in anticipation of a hurricane.

You know this ad couldn’t be released until the bailout had passed both houses.
Now the RNC can get serious.

Here’s another ad. John Gibson just reported that a local college network in Columbus, Ohio, reported how “impartial” GOTV workers are rounding up homeless to register and simultaneously vote–for Obama.
Title of ad: Stealing Ohio. They interviewed a black woman who acknowledged how she told registrants to vote for Obama–several times before she realized she should have kept her mouth shut. Call it a pushback GOTV ad.

“How can they deny what’s in their own words?
Frank tried on O’Reilly and was slammed for it.”
I watched the video and, quite frankly, O’Reilly was a fool. What a wasted moment. Frank deserved to be castigated, but how about as well as Frank’s earlier comments, showing the money/trips/boyfriend connection.
Is O’Reilly to cheap to pay some decent researchers.

Unless the ad is trimmed to 60 seconds in order to fit network slots, and air time is bought for it in heavy doses between now and Debate No. 2 in the swing states, they’re not serious; they’re just preening to try and make their own supporters happy.

If you watch the other video that someone posted up there it brings up the fact that the firm that Obama worked for in Chicago actually sued banks who didn’t make enough sub-prime mortgages as racist. Did Obama ever work on any of those cases? Was that part of his community organizing? I don’t have resources to investigate but what an October surprize that could be if done well!
