Video: Homer Simpson votin’ for Obama

posted at 11:10 am on October 2, 2008 by Allahpundit

It appears to be real, although I’m not sure how it leaked: The producers were saving it for November 2, two days before the election. Anyone surprised?

He’s right about Ohio, though.

Blowback

Are The Simpsons still on?

TheHat on October 2, 2008 at 11:11 AM

Hmm… a 20 yr old cartoon that isn’t doing well and now having to go this far? Makes me wonder.

upinak on October 2, 2008 at 11:11 AM

I haven’t watched the Simpsons since the “War of the Worlds” episode referenced in the article linked above.

Corky on October 2, 2008 at 11:13 AM

Well it’s official……the dumbmasses are voting for Barry!

grapeknutz on October 2, 2008 at 11:13 AM

Because that’s exactly what happened in Florida in 2000, right Groening?

Grafted on October 2, 2008 at 11:13 AM

HA-HA! We can count on American Dad to do the right thing.

journeyscarab on October 2, 2008 at 11:15 AM

D’oh.

Michelle on October 2, 2008 at 11:15 AM

Coming soon: Lisa joins the “Obama Truth Squad” and blows Milhouse’s head off for mentioning William Ayres…

Spanglemaker on October 2, 2008 at 11:15 AM

Real Simpsons fans know this is crap as Homer used to be a fan of Birch Barlow. :)

Pasalubong on October 2, 2008 at 11:16 AM

Hmm… a 20 yr old cartoon that isn’t doing well and now having to go this far? Makes me wonder.

Isn’t doing well? The Simpson’s movie did over half a billion dollars worldwide. The show has been in syndication like, forever. Fox will air it as long as the actors have the voices for it.

One of the endearing qualities of the Simpsons is that they pick on everyone. This is funny stuff.

grdred944 on October 2, 2008 at 11:17 AM

This might be one of those ¨I don´t care¨ moments in my life.

james hooker on October 2, 2008 at 11:17 AM

Well, if Homer is voting for Obama… it must be the right thing to do.

Abby Adams on October 2, 2008 at 11:18 AM

Whatever. The Simpsons sucked after the second season.

jencab on October 2, 2008 at 11:18 AM

Well it’s official……the dumbmasses are voting for Barry!

grapeknutz on October 2, 2008 at 11:13 AM

Aren’t the creators of the simpsons Canadian? Or am I thinking SouthPark?

grdred944 on October 2, 2008 at 11:17 AM

I know, I saw the first one 20 yrs ago. But come on everyone grows up… right?

upinak on October 2, 2008 at 11:18 AM

Coming soon: Lisa joins the “Obama Truth Squad” and blows Milhouse’s head off for mentioning William Ayres…

Spanglemaker on October 2, 2008 at 11:15 AM

HAHA!!!

Coming Soon: Maggie sings “Obama’s gonna change it!”

Seriously though, how can Homer vote for Obama, he works at a nuclear plant?

TheHat on October 2, 2008 at 11:19 AM

Surprised? No. Disappointed? A little…

Still, it shows a common Obama voter… likely doesn’t have a clue about what the “change” will be.

Frozen Tex on October 2, 2008 at 11:21 AM

Allah,

save me a shell in that revolver of yours. It’s time to check out.

Vincenzo on October 2, 2008 at 11:21 AM

I’ve seen the Simpsons make fun of both sides. Homer voting for Obama is not an endorsement. Marge or Lisa is an endorsement.

Theworldisnotenough on October 2, 2008 at 11:21 AM

Someone else sent me this an hour ago. It’s just too prevalent to find amusing. The subliminal message being conveyed here:

If Obama loses, it is because people are racist, anti-working-stiff, or because it was rigged.

Levinite on October 2, 2008 at 11:22 AM

Hmmm, well I choose to interpret it as a satirical view of those who are always complaining about rigged electronic voting, and those who believe them.

That’s my view & I’m sticking with it!

clancy_wiggum on October 2, 2008 at 11:22 AM

Barack Obama. A cartoon candidate for all cartoon characters that needed to go off the air 5 years ago agree with

ConservativePartyNow on October 2, 2008 at 11:23 AM

Seriously though, how can Homer vote for Obama, he works at a nuclear plant?

TheHat on October 2, 2008 at 11:19 AM

Well, if Obama gets elected, then Homer can quit work and let the government support his family.

m064404 on October 2, 2008 at 11:23 AM

I’m surprised the video has been up this long.

Slublog on October 2, 2008 at 11:23 AM

notice people… we all try to not be Homer… he’s considered an idiot… so don’t be too upset that the show’s writers have him voting for Obama

Kaptain Amerika on October 2, 2008 at 11:25 AM

Homer Simpson…. and I’d bet Murphy Brown too…

Happy thought: Maybe the Diebold conspiracy is true

Vashta.Nerada on October 2, 2008 at 11:26 AM

Sad thought: There will be election fraud, but it won’t be to the benefit of McCain.

Vashta.Nerada on October 2, 2008 at 11:27 AM

IF McCain wins, This will be Exhibit A in the impeachment hearing. Actual evidence that McCain stole the election.

custer on October 2, 2008 at 11:27 AM

Levinite, I was just thinking the same thing.

Liberals will need some way to explain how the Messiah could possibly lose that could fit into their worldview. If he does lose, the right wing blogosphere needs to be prepared to screen capture all of rending of garments at the progressive sites before the verbal garbage goes down the memory hole.

Canadian Infidel on October 2, 2008 at 11:27 AM

LMAO. They got it the wrong way round though, regarding Ohio

lodge on October 2, 2008 at 11:27 AM

I used to love this show when I was a teenager… They “jumped the shark” with their anti-American Iraq episode a few years ago and I haven’t watched an episode since. F’em, F-the lot of them.

Family guy can also eat my a$$, BTW.

Claypigeon on October 2, 2008 at 11:28 AM

Homer just wants Obama to do his thug thizzle!

Abby Adams on October 2, 2008 at 11:28 AM

Looks like they “jumped the Homer.”

Star20 on October 2, 2008 at 11:29 AM

Keep in mind, by the music and the supposed airdate, this will be part of the annual “Treehouse of Terror” episode. So it never really happened. So to speak…

Frozen Tex on October 2, 2008 at 11:32 AM

No Rasmussen update? Must be worse that imagined.

ManlyRash on October 2, 2008 at 11:34 AM

Homer is a typical Democrat union bozo who will vote for anyone who appears to promise a free lunch. I wonder though if he knows about Obama’s disdain for nuclear power?

EnglishMike on October 2, 2008 at 11:34 AM

I think the point of the clip is less who to vote for, but more that the GOP can only win via rigging.

cyclosarin on October 2, 2008 at 11:35 AM

It’s probably accurate in the sense that Obama has the gullible moron vote pretty well wrapped up. Now if Ned Flanders was voting for Obama, that would be very troubling.

RBMN on October 2, 2008 at 11:36 AM

I stopped watching this show years ago when Lisa said, “Oh dad, the 2nd amendment was just a leftover from the revolutionary war, it’s totally outdated now”.

I turned it off at that point and never switched it back on.

’nuff said.

Over.

This site has jumped the shark when people are concerned about for whom a cartoon character is voting.

Birch Barlow on October 2, 2008 at 11:39 AM

Am I the only one who heard Homer say “I only meant one of those votes for McCain.”

So, he voted for both of them. Regardless, I call BIAS!

YYZ on October 2, 2008 at 11:40 AM

how come when a toothless appalachian with no running water and no job votes thats “middle america” but when a homeless black bum from NY, Chicago, DC, or wherever votes its fraud?

ernesto on October 2, 2008 at 11:41 AM

But in the run up to entering the machine Homer said he wanted to vote for someone who would raise his taxes, etc etc, thereby taking a swipe at Obama.

eaglewingz08 on October 2, 2008 at 11:42 AM

Yeah… but who is Moe the Bartender voting for?

Sugar Land on October 2, 2008 at 11:43 AM

Stupid like a Fox.

What, did they install a voting booth in the men’s room at Moe’s Tavern?

Did they portray him stepping over Ted Kennedy to get to it?

NoDonkey on October 2, 2008 at 11:43 AM

Note that along with Homer Simpson, South Park’s chef, the late Isaac Hayes, will be voting Democrat this year. I don’t know how he voted before, but this year definitely a Democrat.

RBMN on October 2, 2008 at 11:44 AM

Lisa Simpson to President Clinton: “That’s a lousy way of doing things!”
President Clinton: “Well, I’m a pretty lousy President!”

The Simpsons go after many popular targets and they manage not to whine. I laugh like a baby every time they go after their own network, FOX (who’s satellite is a rickety thing in the sky held up with 3 balloons on a string, and their corporate headquarters staffed by monkeys)

The screen crawl on some of the animated FOX broadcasts on the Groening shows is pretty funny too: E.g. “Study: Democrats cause cancer.”

DrSteve on October 2, 2008 at 11:55 AM

I’m not sure why people are getting upset at Groening: after all, he’s showing a total fool determined to vote for Obama. :)

irishspy on October 2, 2008 at 11:58 AM

Naturally Homer’s voting for Obama. It will mean no new nuclear plants, and thus solidifies his employer’s monopoly position.

JudetheFossil on October 2, 2008 at 11:58 AM

Simpsons is an equal opportunity offender, and anyone thinking that Homer’s choice is one that they want to mimick, makes them the idiot.

I love the Simpsons. Period. Politics ain’t got nothing to do with it.

“I’ll be back. You can’t keep the democrats out of the White House forever, and when they get in, I’m back on the streets with all my criminal buddies!”

“…deep down inside you long for a cold-hearted Republican to lower taxes, brutalize criminals and rule you like a King!”

“Tom Shales gave this show a good review- and I’M! THE ONE! IN PRISON!”

- Kelsey Grammer, as Sideshow Bob.

Oh, wait, I still think South Park is funny and they “make fun of everybody.” So maybe it’s just The Simpsons.

mjk on October 2, 2008 at 12:08 PM

Fictional Character Homer Simpson would make a better President than Barack Obama. That’s what we’ve been reduced to.

NoDonkey on October 2, 2008 at 12:09 PM

In reality it would have been Moe voting, since its been stated he’s not a US citizen and thats the way Obama likes them.

Rbastid on October 2, 2008 at 12:09 PM

Real Simpsons fans know this is crap as Homer used to be a fan of Birch Barlow. :)

And don’t forget the episode where Kent Brockman was fired: Lib…er…als… I hate them so much!

This bit doesn’t bug me. (The “War of the Worlds” episode bugged me, and the Al Gore/Futurma cross-breeding PSA was unfortunate). Groening’s a West Coast lib from way back. I’m surprised the show’s been as even-handed as it has been.

Oh, and Ohio won’t have electronic voting. We did for a couple of years… the county paid $22 million for the machines… but now we don’t. ‘Cause they seem to malfunction whenever a Republican wins. No complaints when Strickland was elected governor though.

saint kansas on October 2, 2008 at 12:12 PM

That’s nice. Too bad The Simpsons actually stopped being funny about 10 years ago. Or I grew up.

I forget which one.

All the humor that the show used to have was transferred to Futurama when that started. Now it’s just a handful of passable gags that are completely obscured by Matt Groening’s ecological didactism.

CherokeeJack on October 2, 2008 at 12:14 PM

Seriously though, how can Homer vote for Obama, he works at a nuclear plant?

TheHat on October 2, 2008 at 11:19 AM

And the very next episode (after Obama is elected on the show), the plant is shut down due to excessive corporate taxes.

Homer goes to a post-election rally as Obama makes a stop. “But you didn’t see YOUR taxes go up, did you?”

Flash over to a TV interview with Burns where he admits to switching over to “environment friendly” energy because that’s where all the incentives and tax cuts are. [Burns is shown flipping through a stack of dollars as he talks to the reporter.]

Flash over to a shot at a creaky old farm windmill with a car alternator strapped to it, refusing to turn in the light breeze. The whole town is dark. Candlelight streams from a few windows.

Flash to Obama as he debates tax income to fund his latest boondoggle projects. “I know! We’ll put a special tax on candles to encourage buying of those fancy economy lightbulbs!” [whispers] “you know, they were one of my largest contributors… went by the name of Good Will…

75 comments and not one Kong v. Kodos reference?

Some Simpsons fans you are.

YYZ on October 2, 2008 at 12:24 PM

It was alright. The Iraq episode was shameful, this is no biggie. Its not as bad as the overt liberal preachiness in the later seasons of Family Guy. The Simpsons peaked in season 6, but still had a few good years afterwards. At this point its not worth watching, but this clip doesn’t bother me.

My fellow Americans, we must move forward, not backward, upward not forward, and always twirling, twirling, twirling towards freedom.

the wolf on October 2, 2008 at 12:32 PM

You can’t just single out one thing from a show that’s been on for 20 years and claim bias. They made plenty of fun of Democrats during the Clinton years.

Oh, and the commentary from one of the early episodes said that Ted Kennedy was none too pleased with Joe Quimby.

There’s also an episode where Homer rips off his shirt and has a “Stockdale for Veep” shirt on underneath.

My two favorite political jabs from the Simpsons are:

Homer: Marge, please, old people don’t need companionship. They need to be isolated and studied so it can be determined what nutrients they have that might be extracted for our personal use.

Marge: Homer, would you please stop reading that Ross Perot pamphlet?

AND

Lisa; Didn’t you wonder why you were getting checks for doing nothing?

Grampa: I figured, ‘cuz the Democrats were in power again.

jbohanon on October 2, 2008 at 12:33 PM

Look people, I’m an expert on Homer Simpson.

He is a union man, and as such will vote for Obama. No doubt about it.

Marge Simpson will secretly vote for McCain (even though she is for public education) because she has so much more in common with Palin. She is a strong woman and she is a Christian, so Palin letting Trig live would definitely be attractive to her.

Trust me, I know what I’m talking about.

:)

Sapwolf on October 2, 2008 at 12:39 PM

Grue in the Attic on October 2, 2008 at 12:19 PM

Actually I stopped watching after the first two seasons or so. Caught one episode that especially made fun of Christianity (Ned breathing gas that made him hallucinate), and I couldn’t stand it. But I just had to add to this thread. Now, to continue with the storyline…

Obama’s “candlelight-to-ecolight” progressive bill passes. To celebrate, he has the winner of the “best and brightest youth” essay do a photo-op with him at the Whitehouse.

On camera, Lisa asks him how they’re supposed to use the new eco-lights when their windmills don’t provide enough power to light a single bulb in town.

[Lisa is immediately tackled by Obama's new personal security force and sent off to the elementary school (sexual) education camp to educate her on how to prevent being "touched" by conservatives.]

[Lisa is last seen singing the Obama national anthem by candle...err, eco-light... err, moonlight.]

dominigan on October 2, 2008 at 12:40 PM

He is a union man, and as such will vote for Obama. No doubt about it.

But, I don’t think they’ve shown him actually at work (at the power plant) in, like, six seasons! How does he…

dominigan on October 2, 2008 at 12:47 PM

My two favorite political jabs from the Simpsons are:

I’d add the Texan oilman at the GOP meeting:

“What about this dang environment? Back in Texas, we got rid of it, and made everyone a lot happier.”

saint kansas on October 2, 2008 at 12:48 PM

Of course you have not seen Homer actually at his station in the plant for awhile. It’s because he is out having a fun time fishing while collecting disability insurance like Trooper Wooten in Alaska when Todd Palin caught him snowmobiling while collecting worker’s comp.

Sapwolf on October 2, 2008 at 12:50 PM

Eh, c’mon. Homer has always been a conservative. I’ve noticed it many times.

Besides, they (like many shows) film two different versions of a scene to make it look like they got it right. Someone probably just leaked the Obama version.

And I don’t find South Park entertaining, either.

grdred944 on October 2, 2008 at 11:17 AM

The Simpsons have always been bitterly partisan and have only gotten worse in the last two years.

I can take humor aimed at my ideals but not when that’s the only humor the show offers.

Esthier on October 2, 2008 at 2:10 PM

Stop, people. Stop. Think for a minute. How many potential voters are likely to do something just because they saw Homer Simpson do it? This is a man who eats mayo out of the jar, climbs power poles and electrocutes himself in the transformers, and prevents an explosion at a nuclear plant by stuffing his butt in the smokestack.
Thanks, Matt Groening.

Sapwolf on October 2, 2008 at 12:33 PM

Not a chance. Marge partially shares her daughter’s liberal views. She’s just not as extreme. Marge could have been a Hillary supporter, but she wouldn’t be a PUMA.

Esthier on October 2, 2008 at 2:23 PM

How many potential voters are likely to do something just because they saw Homer Simpson do it?

whitetop on October 2, 2008 at 2:14 PM

Not the point. People take their news from pop culture. What’s repeated again and again starts to sound like the truth.

In this scene it’s the diabold myth.

This scene won’t convince people to vote Obama. That’s what all the anti-Bush and anti-war shows from the past year or two are for.
