The keys to tonight’s VP debate

Before I get to the debate itself, let me tell you about the plans we have for covering it. I’ll be at Trocadero’s tonight as part of the Northern Alliance Radio Network’s event for AM 1280 The Patriot’s first Debate Party. We’re getting together with a few (hundred) of our listeners to watch the debate live, and then to offer our commentary immediately afterward. When we did this in 2004, we didn’t give it any formal advance notice, and over 700 people showed up. We’ve already received over 400 RSVPs for tonight, so we’re expecting a big night — and we’d love to have you join us! Festivities start at 7:30 pm CT, and the debate starts 30 minutes later.
If you can’t make it to Trocadero’s tonight, be sure to come right here to Hot Air. I’ll have the chat room open, although I won’t be able to live blog, for obvious reasons. I may try playing with Ustream to do a live broadcast of the panel show afterward, but that may be tricky, as the lighting at Trocadero’s may not make that possible. If nothing else, I could stream the audio.
Now, as for the debate itself, here are the keys that I’ll watch on each candidate.
- Sarah Palin: She has to stay aggressive with both Joe Biden and moderator Gwen Ifill. She has to attack the assumptions behind the questions, as Ifill will attempt to box her into desired responses. Biden will damn her with faint praise, being condescending while on the surface seeming courtly. She needs to push back against that. Most importantly, she needs to stop worrying about details and speak to themes and concepts, similar to what Barack Obama needed to do in his debate, and mostly failed. Best attack point: Biden’s pork.
- Joe Biden: He has a tougher assignment. He has to give the appearance of jabbing while trying to throw haymakers. Normally, I’d expect a man with Biden’s experience to attempt to drown Palin with details, but Biden has a habit of inventing those on the fly. Would Ifill call him on that? Doubtful, but the post-debate spin could get brutal. He can’t attack on experience, either, given Obama’s own short record of service, and can’t get by with the Joe Sixpack routine, either. He’ll want to press his advantage on foreign policy. Best attack point: Foreign travel.
I expect this debate to be filled with canned sound bites, gotcha asides, and very little in the way of substantive policy debate. In other words, business as usual. However, Palin has the most to gain and the most to lose in this debate. Biden is a known quantity and even a poor debate showing won’t hurt Barack Obama, but a disaster from Palin will provide a drag on the ticket that only clear wins in the coming debates by John McCain can reverse.

Precisely. She needs to speak to the people, not the pundits.

RJGatorEsq. on October 2, 2008 at 7:56 AM
I don’t know about a Republican landslide, but what most of us feel is that authentic Republicans want what’s best for America, what’s really best for her people. Democrats have stopped wanting that. Their objective is social control, which is about the most unAmerican objective I can think of.
jeff_from_mpls on October 2, 2008 at 7:56 AM
Tonight is her chance to undo the dirty work of the MSM. They have spent the past 3 weeks trying to rip her apart, and then coyly report how she has plummetted in the polls.
She is fighting for all of us tonight.
singlemalt_18 on October 2, 2008 at 7:57 AM
She should spend most of her time attacking Obama and those idiots running congress. Treat Biden as an annoyance – like a fly at a picnic.

I think that is a pretty sound assessment Ed.

I wish I had your level of optimism. Given the MSM’s dominance of the agenda, and their inthetankedness for Obama, it’s difficult to be particularly sanguine about this beforehand. I can only hope I’m not the only average American who sees through the thin veneer into the dark heart of Obama.
SKYFOX on October 2, 2008 at 7:59 AM
But not too often or she’ll seem deliberately combative with the moderator.

Hopefully this debate will put to rest any questions about her nickname “Sarah’cuda”. heh heh

Get ready for an Obama administration. Where do I apply to see a physician and sign my sons up for the Obama youth??
rightallthetime on October 2, 2008 at 8:04 AM
I think she has some latitude to be combative with the moderator that wouldn’t normally exist. She might even want to ask her how the book is coming along, but she should stick with attacking Obama most of the time.
forest on October 2, 2008 at 8:04 AM
I am hoping for Palin to attack. We republicans are feeling disgruntled because of the lack of offense coming from our ticket. I want to see the Barracuda out tonight.
jencab on October 2, 2008 at 8:06 AM
She’ll do fine as long as McCain hasn’t polluted her with this “reaching across the aisle” crap.
m064404 on October 2, 2008 at 8:06 AM
Well, it´s time the gloves come off SOMEWHERE in the McCain camp. If she comes off as the psycho bitch from hell, read my MF lips – I DON´T CARE. The democrats are trying to, at best, enslave my children, and at worst, get them killed. Gloves off, honey! Feed Biden his privates with a plastic fork.
james hooker on October 2, 2008 at 8:07 AM
Yep. She needs to attack Obama and forget Biden. Whatever policy points Biden makes she needs to be able to pull an Obama flip-flop out of the hat and ask WTF (in lady like terms, of course).

At this point, I’d be happy to see her come out of this mess as a viable candidate for the future.

Palin:
Fiscal responsibility
Wants to lower taxes
Record of taking on corruption
Pro-life
Defender of second ammendment
Advocate for special needs children
Hit those points and she comes out even or ahead.
Sugar Land on October 2, 2008 at 8:09 AM
She needs to come across as genuine and as herself. Let the American people see who for who she is and she’ll do just fine.
Matt Helm on October 2, 2008 at 8:09 AM
I agree totally jencab and m064404. McCain has been too nice – especially with the chaos going on, and they’re slipping in the polls. There’s not much to lose, and they can’t just wait for the 527s and blogs to try to explain how the democrats caused the banking implosion etc.
Obama is a weak doctrinaire liberal, and Barney Frank and other Democrats are idiots. I’d say stick to those themes and almost ignore Biden. He’s a non-entity. that’s why the One picked him. So treat him that way.
forest on October 2, 2008 at 8:10 AM
She needs to hammer over and over asking Biden what executive budget did he ever create and what management style did he use in prioritizing the budget items?
This is about the economy and the single greatest impact on America’s economy is the US Government budget. The Government and how much they spend sets the stage for how much capital is available to business and then the consumers. The less capital available the higher the cost of that capital.
That is Biden’s and Obama’s weak points. She cannot say Obama but she can draw the contrast between herself and Biden.
They ask about abortion she says, “I am opposed and by the way Senator this budget were you over or under the break even point with it?”
Jdripper on October 2, 2008 at 8:13 AM
You know they’re going to play the pop-quiz game on her.
“Who’s the assistant to the prime-minister of Krapistan?”
Yet if there were a quiz bowl to be held, it would contain questions that the Marxist utopians can’t answer.
“What are the major weaknesses of computer simulation models of climate change?”
“What is the margin of error in a climate change prediction whose input parameters are drawn from the beta-binomial family of distributions?”
Explain in plain language the principle of Conservation of Energy?
Senator Biden?
Chirp chirp chirp.
Oh, but we’re gonna get communism to save mother earth from these scientifically illiterate hypocrite bastards.
jeff_from_mpls on October 2, 2008 at 8:13 AM
Her answer to every question -
We are in this crisis because:
1. Congress spends too much money. Out here in middle America, we live on a budget.
2. Congress’s lax overseeing of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae led to this crisis. John and I have as our mission the honesty, competency, and fairness of government. We will protect tax payers from those who seek to abuse the system.
3. The people who were supposed to be looking out for the American people were taking large contributions from the companies and people they were supposed to be regulating. The actions of these people has the appearance of impropriety and should be investigated by the Department of Justice.
John and I will clean up this mess. Those who committed criminal acts will be prosecuted. We will create an independent panel to examine this crisis and make recommendations. Any criminal activities will be prosecuted – whether they are in government or private business.

I said this somewhere before, but I think the evangelicals are a big group that are being ignored in all this. It was the evangelicals who, in my opinion, got Bush elected in 2004. They Love Palin and will show up on election day regardless if she makes a mistake in tonight’s debate.
spypeach on October 2, 2008 at 8:16 AM
She isn’t debating Biden, she’s debating the potential Obama administration. She needs to ignore Joe and speak to the people. She needs to contrast the tickets with some force and confidence.
I can’t read the minds of the populace, but I suspect that they are waiting to see this “Barracuda” they’ve heard so much about, but are beginning to wonder if she really exists.
It’s time to remove the doubt.

I think the McCain team has been really skillful in crafting their attacks. I agree that they seem to be pulling their punches in the last couple of weeks, and I’m hoping it’s a thoughtful, deliberate pullback so as not to overshadow or appear indifferent to the financial meltdown.
Remember how good the McCain machine was around the time of the convention? If they can get the Joe-mentum to peak just before the election, we can win.

Walk up to Biden, hand him a hat with antlers on them, then say “It’s opening day, I’ve got my tags”.

But hey, no pressure.

I think that a point that Sarah should make early and often is that she is not a LAWYER.
If asked questions about the SCOTUS, she should say that an executive has to know people and that a McCain-Palin administration promises to appoint lawyers with sound temperament as judges.
Laurence on October 2, 2008 at 8:23 AM
If she speaks directly to the people,,, even she speaks plain conservatism,, boldly with confidence,, even is she has a few gaffs of stumbles a little,, a stumble can last what?? 15 seconds?? 30 seconds?? She has 90 minutes to recover. She has 90 minutes to pound away with the truth.
In the army we had a saying,, I’m sure they still use it. You are never surrounded. You are in a target rich environment!
JellyToast on October 2, 2008 at 8:23 AM
She’s got to attack the Dem’s that caused this financial mess- Republicans are growing old waiting for McCain to name names; I’m hearing a lot of contempt for McCain trying to “play nice”, too damn much bipartisan-ism, and it’s killing him. McCain’s been SO lame these past few days!
anniekc on October 2, 2008 at 8:23 AM
One of the only good things to come out of this financial mess is that millions of people now know Democrats such as Pelosi, “Countrywide” Chris Dodd, Barney Frank, Charlie Rangel, and Harry Reid, are running the show in Congress. Attack them and their lies about the origins of the mess and remind everyone that Obama will be a rubber stamp for these clowns.
forest on October 2, 2008 at 8:24 AM
If Sarah shows up ready to play Sarah, she has the chance to own Biden on meat and potato domestic issues, especially the economy and energy. I am hoping that the economic theme of recent weeks will play to her natural strengths.
If it goes heavy foreign policy, I think she’s in trouble and Biden will out-depth her, even if it is nothing but backward concepts that are heavy on rhetoric and light on reason. If she can work in how fundamentally wrong and backward Biden is on damn near everything and talk like a Governor instead of Ms. Congeniality, she could even swing these issues into her favor.
I am hoping to see Palin on an early offense and get Biden on the ropes while she cruises and he babbles. That will put substance in her favor and help to override his long history or talking points.
Damiano on October 2, 2008 at 8:25 AM
Here’s a very nice video of the real Sarah Palin. Congratulations to the Huffington Post for demonstrating some objectivity.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYaJkWUBP3s
Palin needs to remind the audience that every Sunday for three years Biden appeared on the morning news talkies and gravely reminded everyone how important it was “to get Iraq right”. He’s now running with a guy who opposed getting Iraq right and who still doesn’t understand the importance of getting Iraq right.
Of course, Palin probably would have been too busy with her many responsibilities to have seen Biden on the Sunday morning talkies and may not be aware of his about-face on Iraq. If McCain’s team has not prepared her to make this point then they have not done their job.

Watch for Biden telling us multiple stories of the “I was having a beer with my good friend Timor Borat, the Kazakh ambassador one day when…,” then asking Palin who she lunched with.
JiangxiDad on October 2, 2008 at 8:28 AM
Biden will name-drop leaders, places, cases, and legislation all night long. You can take that to whatever’s left of the bank.
DrSteve on October 2, 2008 at 8:28 AM
Palin needs to stop playing to the expectation of the madia (including blogers) and start playing to the expectations of the people. By buying in to the concept that she has to demonstrate questions as framed by the media (as quizzes and gotcha questions) she has been disappointing both the media and the people. Her strength is that she is one of us, answer like one of us: “Like a regular average person, this is the way I see it……and these are the principles that are important to me in regard to this issue….as for the specific policy details, I will do my best to help the McCain administration implement policies that are consistent with these principles which I believe are shared by a majority of the American people”
neuquenguy on October 2, 2008 at 8:29 AM
Palin needs to say what she needs to say to discredit the Dems, and Biden if she has extra time. The questions be damned.
JiangxiDad on October 2, 2008 at 8:29 AM
Exactly, she needs to attack Obama on his earmarks, his huge donations from FM.
She should even step out and say the most amazing thing is that they have been trying to state the past few months that Obama has more experience then Palin…God help him if he ever compares himself to McCain.
When Biden says McCain votes 90% of the time with Bush, the push back is Obama votes 100% with the Democrats and that is how we got into this economic mess…if he would have listened to McCain on the economy we wouldn’t be having these problems, if he would have listened to him on the surge we wouldn’t be having as much problem, if he would have listened to him on Georgia, Obama wouldn’t have had to change his mind. Obama can’t do what McCain does, work across the aisle…John has worked with you Joe, with Ted Kennedy, for major legislation…Obama hides behind his Chicago political machine waiting for marching orders.

Like AP, I am the glass-half-empty perpetual cynic. Tonight will be a train wreck of horrifying proportions. The post-debate news coverage has already been written and they will only need to insert one or two specific quotes from the actual debate. The MSM has been very successful in their mission to paint Palin as in incompetent boob, in over her head. It really doesn’t matter how well she does, or what she says. Similarly, Biden is already “known” by the MSM as a statesman, so any gaffe is merely an oversight that does not reflect his true understanding of the issues.
FalseProfit on October 2, 2008 at 8:33 AM
If she gets the “How has being Governor of Alaska prepared you for the intricacies of foreign policy?” question, she should simply say:
“I have been busy serving the people of Alaska to the best of my ability, I think my approval ratings there are a testimonial to the work I’ve done. I promise the American people that I will give the same, unselfish effort as Vice President, whether here or abroad.”
pugwriter on October 2, 2008 at 8:40 AM
Doesn’t look like my kind of joint. No fish or animal heads on the wall.
RedWinged Blackbird on October 2, 2008 at 8:42 AM
In the interviews it seemed as if her goal was to survive the partisan drilling. In this debate her goal has to be to show the American people the reasons she has an 80% approval rating as governor.
neuquenguy on October 2, 2008 at 8:43 AM
If so, and if the McCain camp agrees, she has nothing to lose by including some comments in her opening statement that the purpose of the debates is for the PEOPLE to determine who’s best, and that viewers shouldn’t wait until tomorrow to have their newspapers and tv’s tell them who won.
Let Sarah empower people by suggesting they look over the heads of the media.
JiangxiDad on October 2, 2008 at 8:43 AM
I will be watching from my bunker; don’t approach after dark, fair warning.
I fully expect the questions to be slanted in Biden’s favor in an effort to highlight Palin as a hayseed.
“So Senator, what is your favorite color and why?”
“Mayor Palin…sorry, I mean Miss Wasilla, are you or are you not a Nazi sympathizer as some have claimed?”
Bishop on October 2, 2008 at 8:44 AM
She needs to go with the flow. It’s clear that the country is judging her as if she will be the president. She should embrace that and instead of trying to compete with the bottom of the ticket she should go after Oslinme-a’s lack of experience and liberal policies. She matches up better against Oslime-a in a lot of areas. This gives her an opening to attack Oslime-a without him having the ability to respond. AND, we know Biden isn’t going to know all of Osilme-a’s record and this will get his ego fired up and he’ll start making stuff up.
csdeven on October 2, 2008 at 8:44 AM
She also needs to remind everyone that Biden’s solution to Iraq was to partition the country against the will of the people. This solution would have turned low-level sectarian violence into a full scale civil war.
This is the kind of genius I expect from a guy who claims he was shot at in Iraq (when a bullet fell to the ground outside a building he was in) or who claims his helicopter was forced down, implying it was by enemy fire, when in fact it was the weather.
Joe Biden. Slow and Unserious.
Basilsbest on October 2, 2008 at 8:47 AM
I agree. But McCain isn’t. And it’s pathetic that he’s looking to Palin to salvage his sinking campaign.
BuckeyeSam on October 2, 2008 at 8:48 AM
If asked about her experience, Palin should first give the gracious answer about her service to the people of Alaska posted by pugwriter immediately above. If the questioning goes on after that, she has available a simple two-word answer to shut it off:
“John Edwards”

I would advise anybody that they should not play any drinking game that includes taking a swig everytime Sarah says the name “John McCain.” You will drunk in 10 minutes and hugging the throne soon thereafter.
I’m sick of listening to her prop up McCain every other effy sentence. I don’t know if it’s McCain’s advisors feeding her this crap or if she just likes the sound of it.

It is a huge mountain to climb and we are wearing a pair of flip flops!
HoosierCon on October 2, 2008 at 8:50 AM
Over on another thread, I listened to some of her debate performances in Alaska. What was striking was her solid knowledge of the issues of Alaska, from her time as mayor of Wasilla and membership on the state oil and gas board (”Upinak” can help me with the exact name of this!). She was a regular policy wonk up there with 10 years of experience of watching what was going on at higher levels of government (at the time), formulating plans of how it could be run better, and clearly stating them during the debate. She won those debates on substance and competence.
She will be debating at a much higher level tonight, about issues that she may not have encountered in Alaska, about which she will have less experience than she did in Alaska, some of which have shown up in interviews with Charlie Gibson and Katie Couric.
On issues where her own experience is weak, such as foreign policy, she will have to argue McCain’s positions, and make a good case for them, and attack Obama’s weakness (especially concerning the Iraq troop surge and his impetuous desire to attack Pakistan), as well as Biden’s foolish plan to carve Iraq up into three countries.
She needs to also attack Biden and Obama on issues where she is strong, especially energy issues, and she should probably bring up Biden’s gaffe about not developing clean-coal technology in PA, but outsourcing it to China, stressing the blue-collar jobs that energy development will bring to America, rather than paying huge sums of money to countries like Iran and Venezuela which have been threatening us.
She will also need to state clearly who REALLY caused the financial crisis, especially the role of Democrats in pushing Fannie and Freddie to make risky loans, and resisting Republican (and McCain’s) attempts to regulate them, so that blame can be shifted away from President Bush. There seems to be a misconception out there that a President can control everything that happens during his tenure, and Palin is well-placed to correct this, because she is truly an “outsider” on this issue, and has no blame for the financial irresponsibility.
As for Supreme Court decisions she might disagree with, how about Kelo vs. New London? The Supreme Court sided with a town who wanted to throw ordinary people out of their homes so that rich developers could make money on a private health club, and the conservative minority on the Court sided with the ordinary people! If she were to succeed McCain as President, she would appoint judges like Rehnquist, Scalia, Thomas, and O’Connor, who were on the right side of that issue, on the side of the Constitution.
But she needs to be on-message and show substance and knowledge as well as style–that’s how she won in Alaska.
A pitbull with lipstick won’t be good enough, but she could use the “lipstick on a pig” line–where the pig is the bloated Federal Government and members of Congress who are fattening themselves at taxpayer expense.
Go, SarahCuda! It’s the championship game, and you’re at the free-throw line. Time to sink it!!!

She has to point out the the Washington Elites will do anything to keep her out of their “perfect world”. Nothing will be more powerful to the “working electorate” than Palin’s threat to shake up and change the status quo.
Also, her promise to bring energy policies that will put this nation on a path to less foreign dependence would ring well with those that still feel the crunch at the pumps.

If anyone watched pitiful McCain this morning on Fox & Friends, it is obvious the only one who can save this campaign is Palin.

*Attack Obama (basically ignore Biden)
*Attack the assumptions behind the questions
*Focus on several basic themes (including the FM/FM corruption)
I expect Ifill to focus on foreign policy so as to advantage Biden.

Why didn’t he at least make some noise about the pork in the bailout bill. How can he now keep using the line “I promise, I will veto the first bill with pork that comes to my desk…I will name names…”, was he literally talking just about the one first bill? I guess congress will only have to worry about that one.

Laughing and crying at the same time. But if we lost in spite of a magnificent campaign, because the majority of Americans prefer socialism, it would be even worse. A loss from a lack of proper tactics would be easier to swallow.

If you thought Palin gave a painful interview to Couric, go find a video of McCain’s performance on Fox & Friends this morning. I reccomend having a puke bag next to you while you watch.

The most seemingly intelligent everyday liberals look at me like I’m from outer space when I ask them what it is about socialism that appeals to them. I know successful, wealthy registered democrats who do not believe that the democrat party is socialist. They will be the ones who squeal loudest once the realize they have helped put a fascist regime in power. Even then they will try to blame it on conservatives.

Won’t the MSM be a little surprised too when they find out they have to submit everything to the Department of Communications for approval before they air it or publish it.

Well at least after the Fairness Doctraine is passed, normal guys like you and me will be able to get time on the Olbermann show to give a fair and balance opposing point of view.
Oh wait, Kieth Olbermann will be the Director of The Department of Communications and won’t be doing his show then.

YES ! Use this to combat the inevitable Biden crap of ‘8 years of Bush policies’ .. arrgh.

I want to know why McCain didn’t “make them famous” last night, about the pork in the Senate bill.

Most everyone here seem to think Sarah needs to attack Obama, attack Biden, go on the offensive, and I dont think that is a totally bad idea.
But I think Sarah has ONE BIG HUGE task tonight and it does not involve attacking anyone.
The template on the MSM right now is that Sarah is a dim-witted country hick who is totally unprepared to be President should tragedy ensue.
Sarah’s main task tonight is to REASSURE the American People that she has the common sense, the ability and dare I say the GRAVITAS needed to take over as President should that event arise. She needs to show people that she can be a President — and my advice to Sarah is to emulate HARRY TRUMAN.
Show your common sense, your plain wisdom, your acknowledgement of the tough task at hand and your willingness to do whatever it takes to defend and protect all Americans.
I say leave the attacks at home, just come CONFIDENT, TOUGH, ASSURED and with the goal of convincing ordinary Americans that they could be safe if you had to step in for McCain in an emergency.

Palin should say,
“Congratulations on your forthcoming book! Hey, why don’t we get together after the election, & you can start a book about the first female VP!”
jgapinoy on October 2, 2008 at 9:46 AM
Don’t worry, I’m told there’s a conservative plant in the audience who’s going to ask:
Senator Biden, which ethnic group is your favorite group to be around, and why?

…I’m told that it’ll be called “the Ministry of Truth” then, but he is a premier candidate for the post….
Puritan1648 on October 2, 2008 at 9:58 AM
The Media will ensure that their establishment as the 4th branch of government will be irreversible after tonight. They will declare the winner is Biden no matter what her actual performance was/is….. Everyone I know thinks McCain clobbered Obambi in their debate and yet the now accepted “logic” is that Obambi won….. Face it folks…. the american public at large is mostly stupid and will go along with any thing due to the continued dumbing down by our ineffective and indoctrinating educational system. It’s no longer what I can do for my country it is now, please Mr. Country pass me my part of the pie….. Welcome to Socialism via Media Coup…..
Randy1968 on October 2, 2008 at 9:59 AM
Sorry not trying to be such a downer….. but our )(*^& candidate won’t even stand up and fight… why the heck should we stand up and fight as he called on us to do in his acceptance speech??????
Randy1968 on October 2, 2008 at 10:01 AM
UPDATED: Finally, Biden needs to show he stands when he pees.

I think she’ll do just fine. Repeat a lie enough times and people will believe it. I confess to crossing my fingers every time Bush gave a speech, hoping he could get through each sentence. Why? Because that was the setup.
I see the same deal here. Everyone’s painting Joe “FDR-TV” Biden as a foreign policy genius. He does have a ton of experience: all of it bad. And Palin’s just some yee-haw hockey mom way out of her league, right? I mean, that’s what Matt Damon and Diddy told me.
How the fork are we letting people get away with believing Obama has more experience than Palin? Why are we buying into it?
Stand up, Joe, let ‘em see you!

I am quite surprised by BHO leaping out in the polls, some have him at a 9 point lead.
Normally the polls tighten as we get closer to the “DAY”
What is happening?
At this rate the Dems will not have to cheat to win this election!!!!
