Sources: Palin to go on the offensive against Biden
posted at 4:35 pm on October 2, 2008 by Allahpundit
Smart. It restores the “pitbull in lipstick” image that the Couric interviews dissolved, it increases the chance of a golden Biden jackass moment by getting under his skin, and it keeps the spotlight off of her own answers. The debate’s supposed to be “about” Palin; to the extent she can make it about Biden or, better still, about Biden’s disagreements with Obama, it’s a victory even if she spends half her time tapdancing on policy.
Sarah Palin plans to go on the attack in tonight’s debate, hitting Joe Biden for what she will call his foreign policy blunders and penchant for adopting liberal positions on taxes and other issues, according to campaign officials involved in prepping her for tonight’s showdown…
“This is going to finally put her back into a position where we see her like we saw her the first couple weeks,” a McCain official said. “She was herself. She was authentic, and people related to that. … Tonight, she’ll get into a rhythm. You’re going to see her in a way that you haven’t seen her yet.”…
From her debate playbook, as described by McCain officials:
—Throw Biden’s own words back at him…
—Highlight past Biden foreign-policy positions as a way to undermine his core strength…
—Highlight places where Biden and Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) have differed, including primary-season statements about Obama’s readiness to lead and his positions on Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan.
Follow the link for examples of each. Exit question: What’s Biden’s goal in this debate? The media claims Palin’s the one for whom the bar’s been set low, but realistically all Biden has to do to protect Obama’s lead is sound reasonably informed and coherent (even if he isn’t) and not pop off at his opponent. Shouldn’t be hard for a six-term senator. Be Joe Cool for 90 minutes, take any abuse with a smile, and tear down McCain at every opportunity and he’s guaranteed a draw, which is all he needs. If he can’t resist a zinger at her expense, the obvious angle would be to try to counter her own immaculate blue-collar-ness with his own. Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who’s the most down-to-earth millionaire of them all?
Update: I know what he means but Joementum’s not helping by phrasing things this way.

I hope she approaches this debate with the knowledge that:
1. She has no friends in the building
2. Show the world why you were the right VP pick
3. Stay on your toes and be ready to pounce.
4. State the differences between the two candidates on every issue brought up.
5. Don’t lose without firing every round you have.

Slow Joe will be playing prevent defense tonight. He knows his babbling is verboten, so he’ll let her throw short across the middle and dink some flares outside, but not let her have the post pattern. He’ll grin and admit he sometimes exaggerates when he gets excited, but that is a small price to pay for his experience and expertise. Just a good old boy. Barry will have gained a tremendous amount of foreign policy experience just since the primaries, and Sarah, bless her heart, is a smart little gal, but god help us, just hasn’t had enough time to learn what she needs to know to be qualified at this point. Then he’ll go into a shell and block punches with his forearms. All he has to do is play not to lose. Sarah has to break though that shell and work that huge ego to the point he has to respond. Going to be tough if he has any self discipline at all.

Registration restrictions harm debate, I still stand by that. The level of debate going on at Townhall at that time was much better, have not been there lately so I cannot comment on the present. At Redstate you get banned if you so much as mention what Leo Strauss and his offspring believe. But I do like to debate and argue, when I started fighting libs whether it was when I started fighting libs at Huffingtonpost or misguided “conservatives” here. I find blogs where I agree with everyone useless and boring.

I agree. As far as I’m concerned, McCain’s blown this more than Governor Palin..he’s run a weak campaign. I’m tired of being emotionally invested in it, since he doesn’t seem to be. Romney was my candidate of choice way back when.
As a shallow aside, what a stunning visual a Romney/Palin ticket would have been. Not that it matters. :)

Does anyone here honestly agree with Palin on her views about abortion in cases of rape and incest?
Speedwagon82 on October 2, 2008 at 5:04 PM
It is the only consistent pro-life position. The trouble people have with abortion is not that the mother is making a decision, but rather that an innocent is being killed. The sin of the father does not make the child any less innocent.
It’s all or nothing. To argue pro-choice from the perspective that the child does not have human rights until born is plausible–problematic, but plausible (though I disagree with it). But to argue pro-life with those exceptions denies the pro-life argument in the first place. In any action conceiving a human life, the only indisputably innocent party is the life being conceived. To say that guilt of one of the party’s justifies the taking of the life of the indisputably innocent party makes no sense. I’m afraid it really is “all or nothing” for honest pro-lifers.
Abortion is not about “reproductive rights”. It’s about sexual rights. (Hence, the pro-choice stances of most homosexual activists). Specifically, it goes to the Leftist desire for “equality of outcome.” The consequences for a female screwing around are potentially far greater than those for a male. To liberals, this outcome is not “fair.” Nevermind it is simply the reality of the situation.
Abortion is an effort to enable women to screw on a par with men’s relative lack of concern for consequences. It seeks to eliminate the natural social distinction between the sexes and in the process tear down any sort of traditional morality, which is based on the reality of the nature of the situation. A “rape and incest” exception are violations of principle for the pro-life stance. And on that issue, it’s one that would be too great a “slippery-slope” threat.

It wouldn’t have mattered if we nominated Romney, Thompson, or Huckabee. Americans don’t like keeping a party in power for over 8 years when things aren’t perfect. If we had pulled out of Iraq 3 years ago and the economy wasn’t melting down, then McCain would be winning.

I’ll bet the victim would be glad to volunteer to carry the child all the way to term if that gave her the right to carve off the rapist’s genitals with a switchblade.

marklmail on October 2, 2008 at 5:44 PM
Speedwagon, let me ask it to you this way. WHY do you support abortion during those situations?
Is it because you don’t want your family to be stuck with a child of a rapist? That’s what adoption is for.
You don’t want them to go through the pain of nine months carrying and childbirth? Do you seriously believe that’s an even trade for the life of a child? SERIOUSLY?
I’m curious for your reasoning behind your position, because for all I can see it’s extremely illogical.

Registration restrictions lowers the level of debate. It is ripe territory for me, but yes people aren’t missing much. Frankly when I post something seriously and someone disagrees there are no thoughtful answers. It has actually made my tone more combative and more inclined to make a sarcastic statement than engage in debate. Back when I wrote that at townhall there was some of that, but mainly you would have two people disagreeing who would write paragraphs back and forth going over every little detail of policy and neither had to get very snarky and both could agree to disagree. People never said, “what are you doing here if you don’t agree”, “go back to fringeland”, or “(enter your own childish personal attack)”. Also no registration helps the regular visitors keep up with trends in public opinion because they are not sheltered.

Biden’s problem is that in order to not screw it up totally he is going to have to get way mellow and tone it down. Doing so will make him look old and tired. Certainly next to someone who is young and quite visually appealing.
Palin’s problem is the Ifil needs to sell books so she can upgrade to a Lark or a Power Scooter. In order to do that she will have to shape the questions to where they can play to Sarah’s weaknesses.
Short of Palin falling flat on her face, which I do not expect, she will win but I fully expect the media to say it was not enough. They never will accept Palin because she has not bowed down to the likes of Dowd.

GarandFan on October 2, 2008 at 5:55 PM
Excellent points.
Just focusing on her situation: It’s an all or nothing fight. If you’re fighting for your life (and I’m convinced at this point she is), you have nothing to lose. Come November 5 or so, Palin will either be VP-elect or a discredited governor from a far-off state, working on plans to go back to fishing. Not much middle ground.
This is truly a place where the good of the team (the ticket and the country) and the good of the individual member are precisely overlapping. It’s “Press Your Luck” time–she either wins it all (or at least a chance at it all) or loses her shirt. (Stop panting, guys–I’m being metaphorical there)
(And for that matter, probably ditto the campaign–the ticket and the country as we know it.)
One personal note: Palin does have one personal quality I particularly admire in all this. I’m convinced she’s not tied up in it all. If she succeeds, great. She moves up and serves. If the fails, she just goes back, finishes up as governor, and then goes fishing with her family.
It’s her faith, it’s her family, it’s her principles. Too often I personally see people tied up in those things, and as a result they fail to adequately act sufficiently for the greater community. They get selfish in them. Palin shows how people can indeed have all those things and yet still lay oneself out for their community and country. Whatever the outcome, hopefully people on “our side” can take this lesson from the campaign.

a capella on October 2, 2008 at 6:03 PM
First of all, I don’t believe in abortion just because two people have consensual sex. Its not the baby’s fault they couldn’t wait until marriage.
But I believe rape is such a gigantic deprivation of a mother’s rights that it overrides the resulting baby’s right to life.
I know this doesn’t seem consistent with your beliefs on every child’s equality, but I don’t really give a damn. McCain and the vast majority of the pro-life community agrees with me. I don’t even think Sarah Palin would make any move to outlaw abortion in cases of rape(despite what the lunatic Left thinks). I just hope her personal belief against it doesn’t cost us otherwise pro-life votes.

Your position is amoral, ignoring the moral difference between the two lives. One is innocent, and should be preserved. The other is guilty, and should be eliminated.
It never ceases to amaze me how some people have fallen so far as to lose that perception of the very concept of right and wrong, good and evil. To reject it in practice is bad enough, but to reject it even in theory goes to a psychological deficiency.

Glad to hear that! Lee County is one of the deep-red parts of Florida (Bush got over 60% there both times), but it’s good to know they’ll be out there on Election Day–we’ll need every one of them!
Unfortunately, my parents who vote absentee there are Obamabots from reading the New York Slimes too long. They blame the “Republican” financial problems. Which is why I keep insisting that McCain/Palin need to name names about who ran Fannie and Freddie into the ground, made millions, and stuck the rest of us with the bill!

I hope there’re a lot of folks like that out there.

There is personally counseling against that and implementing such as policy and law. Those are different matters.

Imposition of one’s own value system which requires carrying a forced, nonconsensual pregnancy to term by a brutalized woman may also have some moral deficiencies. The old canard about just giving birth and handing it off for adoption or raising it as a love child with no negative psychological impact on the mother is the cheap easy answer, molded to justify the original value system.

And just as I expected, Katie Couric runs interference for Obama before the debate.
It escapes me how that two-bit hack is still considered a respectable journalist. She should go enroll in a wet t-shirt contest somewhere.

We will all know in two and a half hours. A knockout by Sarah and this place will go nuts. A knockout by Joe and the population of HA will suddenly decrease as the EMTs haul the parts off.

I have faith in Palin. I think she’ll not only hold her own but provide a knockout punch to Biden.

How many women who’ve had abortions do you meet on a regular basis? Many of them will tell you that the abortion was the real violation. Many have difficulty respecting themselves for what they’ve done. The abortion advocates we see and hear from have either never had one or have hardened themselves against the trauma it causes.

Why do I always feel there is a catch-22 in what you post?
