Palin-Biden debate chat and commentary!

Tonight, Sarah Palin and Joe Biden square off at 9 pm ET for the only Vice Presidential debate for this election. Palin needs to convince American voters that she is up to the task of the second-highest position in the executive branch, while Biden has to avoid making any major gaffes that will force the national media to report them.

Can she do it? The Examiner’s Mark Tapscott predicts that Palin will prevail:

Call me a cockeyed optimist or a fool or whatever, but I predict Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin will be the clear winner over Sen. Joe Biden in tonight’s debate between the vice-presidential nominees. Not because I think she’s a master debater – though she clearly has been underestimated in this department before – but because she possesses the one qualification nobody else on either ticket has – She’s not part of the Washington crowd.

I’m somewhat less sanguine than Mark, but willing to be proven wrong. I think both candidates will do well tonight. Biden’s already been through more than a dozen of these in this cycle alone, and he hasn’t made a serious mistake in any of them. His gaffes come in less-guarded moments. Don’t expect anything but a competent and sharp performance from Biden.

Palin will do very well indeed, and again the low expectations from recent media coverage will make it look even better. I don’t expect her to top Biden, but she really doesn’t need to do that anyway. If she comes across as confident, assertive, honest, and engaged, she will do fine — and in this debate the tie would be seen as a huge win for Palin.

I’ll be at Trocadero’s tonight, at the party for AM 1280 The Patriot, and won’t be live-blogging.  We will have a panel discussion before and after the debate, and I may try to broadcast through Ustream for the event.  Let’s see how that works, but don’t miss the live chat room!  Jazz Shaw of The Moderate Voice moderates the chat, and he does a great job riding herd on the conversation.  Be sure to register at Ustream to participate in our raucous live-chat sessions. (And if the log-in prompt doesn’t come up in the chat box below, use this link instead.)

See you at the debate!

Am I alone here? Palin was supposed to be a weak candidate without enough knowledge to do well in a debate with an old pro like Biden. My adored spouse is reading a conservative forum as I type, free Conservative, and those folk seem to think she is doing poorly because she did not forcefully attack Biden on the dems fingerprints on the economic crash. I never say a real opportunity and did see one heck of a good debate on her part, better than McCain last week

TeeDee on October 2, 2008 at 10:29 PM

I think for folks knowing Palin from the jokes, negative press and SNL saw a different person than they were lead to believe, so this is a win for her.

How the hell did she fall into such an obvious trap as the Executive-Legislative question? That was supposed to be a gimme and she turned it into a fatal gaffe, it’ll be playing all day tomorrow.

Typhonsentra on October 2, 2008 at 10:22 PM

She got it right. The vice-president’s duty is specified in the legislative article:

Article. I. – The Legislative Branch
Section 3 – The Senate
The Vice President of the United States shall be President of the Senate, but shall have no Vote, unless they be equally divided.

scrubjay on October 2, 2008 at 10:32 PM

Helluva job Sarah!

She did about the best she could have.

But unless they nail the Dems on the CRA, Fannie et. al., they will lose.

Love how Ifill spins the end, “Sarah Palin, you have the opportunity to make the first closing statement.”

Sounds so much better than, “Senator Biden will have the last word.”

neuquenguy on October 2, 2008 at 10:37 PM

Good closing statement from Palin.

She’s not great on the “two tickets” line, but on being middle class and loving america she was excellent — and I absolutely loved the reminder that our Freedom will only last as long as we are willing to fight for it. Loved it.

That’s a rallying cry the base can get behind with gusto.

wytammic on October 2, 2008 at 10:37 PM

CBS news: The headline will be that Sarah Palin did not embarrass herself as some feared.

Also, she said that Biden kept trying to pin the Bush administration on McCain, and Palin kept trying to distance herself. As if it wasn’t obvious that Biden kept attacking the Bush administration even when it made no sense.

theregoestheneighborhood on October 2, 2008 at 10:37 PM

Did Gwen just tell Biden he did great?

Biden asked how she was feeling – She replied – I am great-\

She has a broken foot

iam7545 on October 2, 2008 at 10:38 PM

All through this debate I have noticed a few things that seem constant. Biden is the machine gun liar that he usually is, he knows that he can spew a thousand lies and hour and the truth never gets it’s shoes on. Palin couldn’t have rebutted all of his lies if she had ten minutes to his every one, and as one of the oldest dyed in the wool corrupt senators, Biden knows that.

I think Palin was badly coached. I think there are people on McCains team who are purposely trying to sink him and he’s too dull to know it. He couldn’t be running a worse campaign if his main issue was free teddy bears for raped children. He just isn’t distinguishing himself as that much different from Obama or Bush. STUNNING STUPID!! However, Palin showed an intelligence and an honesty that was very refreshing in contrast to an old lying political hack like Biden. She did not hurt herself at all, but she could have really kicked some ass! When Biden said we are spending 10 billion a month in Iraq, she could have said, “Joe, we are spending seventy five times that much on Wall St fat cats in ONE DAY!!!” But she couldn’t say that. Why, because she is running with John McCain who is the worst RINO on the planet and he, who so many times claims to be the enemy of pork, IS VOTING FOR THE DAMNED THING!

Bikerken on October 2, 2008 at 10:38 PM

ABC says both did well: Biden is known, so Palin wins, I think.

Count to 10 on October 2, 2008 at 10:38 PM

Steve Z on October 2, 2008 at 10:39 PM

No mention of Biden’s gaff’s……… Kirsten? No?

Wait for Rush tomorrow, sweetie…

Seven Percent Solution on October 2, 2008 at 10:39 PM

Sarah was awesome! Biden will be exposed (by the new media) for spending most of this debate lying through his teeth. Clearly, Sarah is ready for prime time! I loved the part where she looked directly into the camera and voiced how great America is; how proud she is of her country.

Steve Z on October 2, 2008 at 10:41 PM

I think Palin did a great job. All Joe could do was grit his teeth, smirk, attack Bush and mischaracterize McCain’s positions.

He gets a 2/10 and I only give him that for the well-kept white teeth.

Ryan Gandy on October 2, 2008 at 10:41 PM

Neither of the two be ideal candidates, but I would much rather be choosing between Biden and Palin for president than either McCain/Obama.

I think Palin did well overall, especially near the end when she realized that she could hold her own and didn’t have to respond to every point Biden tried to score against McCain, but her answer’s pertaining to bailout were terrible.

Palin doesn’t seem to be nearly as conservative as I’ve been led to believe. Perhaps some coin her as a conservative based more on her religious faith than her political views.

I think between McCain/Palin and Obama/Biden, McCain/Palin would be the better Democrat administration.

FloatingRock on October 2, 2008 at 10:42 PM

The test will be tomorrow…if the morning cable shows sift the issue to the vote for rthe bailout while barely covering the debate, we will know Palin won big.
