Palin-Biden debate chat and commentary!

Tonight, Sarah Palin and Joe Biden square off at 9 pm ET for the only Vice Presidential debate for this election. Palin needs to convince American voters that she is up to the task of the second-highest position in the executive branch, while Biden has to avoid making any major gaffes that will force the national media to report them.

Can she do it? The Examiner’s Mark Tapscott predicts that Palin will prevail:

Call me a cockeyed optimist or a fool or whatever, but I predict Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin will be the clear winner over Sen. Joe Biden in tonight’s debate between the vice-presidential nominees. Not because I think she’s a master debater – though she clearly has been underestimated in this department before – but because she possesses the one qualification nobody else on either ticket has – She’s not part of the Washington crowd.

I’m somewhat less sanguine than Mark, but willing to be proven wrong. I think both candidates will do well tonight. Biden’s already been through more than a dozen of these in this cycle alone, and he hasn’t made a serious mistake in any of them. His gaffes come in less-guarded moments. Don’t expect anything but a competent and sharp performance from Biden.

Palin will do very well indeed, and again the low expectations from recent media coverage will make it look even better. I don’t expect her to top Biden, but she really doesn’t need to do that anyway. If she comes across as confident, assertive, honest, and engaged, she will do fine — and in this debate the tie would be seen as a huge win for Palin.

I’ll be at Trocadero’s tonight, at the party for AM 1280 The Patriot, and won’t be live-blogging.  We will have a panel discussion before and after the debate, and I may try to broadcast through Ustream for the event.  Let’s see how that works, but don’t miss the live chat room!  Jazz Shaw of The Moderate Voice moderates the chat, and he does a great job riding herd on the conversation.  Be sure to register at Ustream to participate in our raucous live-chat sessions. (And if the log-in prompt doesn’t come up in the chat box below, use this link instead.)

See you at the debate!

you got your rose-colored glasses on pretty snug. she started off slow and unsteady. but its better to be up late than be up early. obviously people will remember a strong finish better than a shaky start. kinda like a pitcher who gives up a few runs in the 1st inning but then shuts them down after that. its more important that she has settled in and is gigging him now. he is starting to sound irritated and coming across as an ass, but i stand by my comments earlier.

chasdal on October 2, 2008 at 10:08 PM

You must be a moonbat… never heard of “early to bed…”? I know they are fond of sleeping in on their parent’s money. The rest of us work and rise early. Oh, we also usually work late too.

As far as better to give up a few runs early… well, when she finishes pitching this shutout, you may change your mind on that.

oh see, your like wiseman and the others, your view of things is so simplistically idiotic that anyone who criticizes mccain or palin has to be for obama. sheeple like ruin the party.

School Vouchers???

Steve Z on October 2, 2008 at 10:13 PM

How about education stressed/strengthened at the state level, reduce spending at the federal level.

electric-rascal on October 2, 2008 at 10:13 PM

When did Scranton become the only place in America where American’s voices count? Seriously, Biden’s running for VP of the US not Grand Wizard of Eastern PA and the state of DE.

TEXT YOUR VOTE FOR PALIN:
FOX NEWS to keypad: 36288 vote “B” for Palin

I looked at CNN & MSLSD and didn’t note any voting instructions. does anyone have other numbers to vote?

Wrong-Britt Hume asked Quayle that question in 1988 and Quayle blew it.

Oh, that’s right. I forgot Gwen was channeling the DNC “Quayle strategy” with Governor Palin.

Let’s roll.

sibobr on October 2, 2008 at 10:15 PM

The ‘looking back’ line is good…Palin is doing MUCH better than expected and Biden has made up a few things. His line about 3 weeks in Iraq cost more than 5 years in Afghanistan…Iraq costs 10 Billuion a month. 3 weeks is about 7 Billion…Does anone on God;s green earth really believe we have only spent $7 Billion in Afghanistan over 5 years?

A flat lie

JIMV on October 2, 2008 at 10:15 PM

Biden has thrown a lot at her and yet has not rattled her. That should count well with many.

MB4 on October 2, 2008 at 10:15 PM

Joe Biden – Co-president…trying to make himself more important than he will be.

Kat_Mo on October 2, 2008 at 10:15 PM

I noticed, she was like right at you!

neuquenguy on October 2, 2008 at 10:16 PM

Biden would govern with Obama?

VP = puppetteer, President = Puppet!

Steve Z on October 2, 2008 at 10:16 PM

She has biden rattled – what a no answer on being vp.

Colonel_prop on October 2, 2008 at 10:16 PM

Wow, Gwen and Cheney…..wow.

ex-Democrat on October 2, 2008 at 10:16 PM

“Flexibility”… ugh. It’s Executive, just say it lady!

Typhonsentra on October 2, 2008 at 10:17 PM

A ‘gotcha’ line on the responsibilities of the VP but Palin avoids it.

JIMV on October 2, 2008 at 10:17 PM

I AM NOT, BELEIVING WHAT GWEN NOEYEFUL, JUST ASKED!!!! She asked a question of how a Biden administration would be different that an Obama administration (INSINUATING that Obama might be killed!!!!) And I didn’t realize what the hell the question was about until Joe, (WHO HAD TO HAVE HAD THE QUESTION IN ADVANCE), knew exactly what she was talking about and without skipping a beat, said, “God forbid that would ever happen!” WHAT????? God forbid WHAT would happen???? Then it dawned on me what the insinuation of the question was, “WHAT IF THESE RACIST WHITE PEOPLE WERE TO KILL BARACK OBAMA? HOW WOULD YOUR ADMINISTRATION BE DIFFERENT?” I cannot believe she asked that! And by the way he answered, he seemed to have expected the question. What an outrageous question for him to have not been surprised about it at all but to slip right into a prepared response. This is unreal!!

Bikerken on October 2, 2008 at 10:17 PM

Biden played to the base…Cheney most dangerous VP?

Kat_Mo on October 2, 2008 at 10:17 PM

Biden lecturing again…Not real knowledgable about the constition…forgets case law….sad

JIMV on October 2, 2008 at 10:18 PM

Joe just said if obama get lost he jump right in. Boy i feel better now.

thmcbb on October 2, 2008 at 10:18 PM

Got to be some fuzzy math in there someplace.

MB4 on October 2, 2008 at 10:18 PM

The next question will be:

Governor Palin; should Karl Rove be arrested and shot or should their be a trial before shooting him?

CC

CapedConservative on October 2, 2008 at 10:18 PM

I think Palin is starting to feel more comfortable and confident. It’s too bad there isn’t going to be a second VP debate.

FloatingRock on October 2, 2008 at 10:18 PM

this thread is a little hinky. preview button works if it feels like it… must be a lot of good people here overwhelming the site. you might want to copy your comments before hitting the buttons just in case it doesn’t take.

I hope she makes her personal pro-life (emphasis on PERSONAL, as in “I would never impose it on anyone else”) position clearer. and mentions that even if Roe v Wade was ever overturned it would not make abortion illegal but rather would throw the argument back to the states where our Constitution says it should be
.

NightmareOnKStreet on October 2, 2008 at 10:18 PM

Who cares about Cheney? He’ll be gone soon…

Steve Z on October 2, 2008 at 10:18 PM

Joe is talking crazy…the President of the Senate (the VP) has had more power via the constitution if it is wanted. John Adams set the precedent to decrease that visibility and interaction. It is not set by the constitution.

Does biden actually know anything about the consitution?

Kat_Mo on October 2, 2008 at 10:19 PM

Kat_Mo on October 2, 2008 at 10:21 PM

So far Biden has sounded …Dull, and Palin, who was expected to lose pretty badly, bthe old media, has held herown.

If the old media bothers to fact check Bidens whoppers and gaffs tomorrow, he will nt look good, though I expect the media to shift from Palin victory tonight to gthe Bailout vote tomorrow pretty quickly.

JIMV on October 2, 2008 at 10:22 PM

How the hell did she fall into such an obvious trap as the Executive-Legislative question? That was supposed to be a gimme and she turned it into a fatal gaffe, it’ll be playing all day tomorrow.

Typhonsentra on October 2, 2008 at 10:22 PM

Joe’s channeling Hillary’s tear ducts?

Will that work?

Disagree about Biden sounding dull. To the contrary, he’s managed to be passionate while not going off the deep end. And he’s landed the hardest punches against McCain than Palin has against either Biden or Obama. He’s gotten away with a whole bunch of BS, but that’s on Palin for letting him get away with it. She got a lot better after the first half-hour or so, but I think she’s been far more wooden overall than Biden.

They’re going to be nailing Palin on her answer to the Dick Cheney’s Constitutional interpretation question.

(To which she should have said: Look, I’m not a Constitutional lawyer… repeat her view of the job of the VP…)

But, Holy crap. Joe Biden, Lawyer, professional griller of Judicial nominees and Supreme Court nominees, said that Article 1 of the Constitution is the one describing the executive.

Article 1 is the Legislature. Article 2 is the Executive.

Basic error.

Just something to hit back with…
