Tonight, Sarah Palin and Joe Biden square off at 9 pm ET for the only Vice Presidential debate for this election. Palin needs to convince American voters that she is up to the task of the second-highest position in the executive branch, while Biden has to avoid making any major gaffes that will force the national media to report them.
Can she do it? The Examiner’s Mark Tapscott predicts that Palin will prevail:
Call me a cockeyed optimist or a fool or whatever, but I predict Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin will be the clear winner over Sen. Joe Biden in tonight’s debate between the vice-presidential nominees. Not because I think she’s a master debater – though she clearly has been underestimated in this department before – but because she possesses the one qualification nobody else on either ticket has – She’s not part of the Washington crowd.
I’m somewhat less sanguine than Mark, but willing to be proven wrong. I think both candidates will do well tonight. Biden’s already been through more than a dozen of these in this cycle alone, and he hasn’t made a serious mistake in any of them. His gaffes come in less-guarded moments. Don’t expect anything but a competent and sharp performance from Biden.
Palin will do very well indeed, and again the low expectations from recent media coverage will make it look even better. I don’t expect her to top Biden, but she really doesn’t need to do that anyway. If she comes across as confident, assertive, honest, and engaged, she will do fine — and in this debate the tie would be seen as a huge win for Palin.
I’ll be at Trocadero’s tonight, at the party for AM 1280 The Patriot, and won’t be live-blogging. We will have a panel discussion before and after the debate, and I may try to broadcast through Ustream for the event. Let’s see how that works, but don’t miss the live chat room! Jazz Shaw of The Moderate Voice moderates the chat, and he does a great job riding herd on the conversation. Be sure to register at Ustream to participate in our raucous live-chat sessions. (And if the log-in prompt doesn’t come up in the chat box below, use this link instead.)
See you at the debate!

Gov Palin looked great and did a wonderful presentation of her message. Sen Biden look tired and worn. Sen Biden did not present his party’s message, he attacked Pres Bush and VP Cheney. I know what Sen McCain and Gov Palin plan to do in office, she stated the ideas.
Sen Biden was too busy attacking Pres Bush to put forth Sen Obama and his message. Do they (Obama/Biden) have a message? Is their message solely we’re not Bush and we want to imply that McCain is Bush? For this reason alone, Palin won the debate.

biden argued about senate procedure. people in Ohio don’t care!!
the MSM is completely in the tank. No debate – Palin won.

I thought Palin’s answer about the economic situation was rather lame, but so was Joey’s. Nobody in politics is telling the truth, and I know why. They are all to blame. John McCain was elected to congress five years after the Community Reinvestment Act was passed. Reagan and George H W Bush ignored it or else this credit crisis would have happened several years ago. Barack “Organizer” Obama is up to his eyeballs in this legalized extortion racket known as CRA.

Ed, ManlyRash and I take umbrage over your choice of screenshots. Pay no attention to the cross bow bolts and boomerangs sticking out of the trunk lid of your car.

Sean Hannity is absolutely embarrassing Debbie Wasserman Schulz on Fox right now. I may have to change the channel it’s getting so bad
Dudley Smith on October 2, 2008 at 11:35 PM
That’s bogus. Biden repeatedly stated that Obama was going to change America’s foreign policy and give relief to the middle class. OTH, Palin was trashing Obama yet couldn’t give any specifics about McCain’s plans.

second look at Dick Morris!
phronesis on October 2, 2008 at 11:39 PM
Wasn’t that fabulous? And now Dick Morris is blasting Colmes. Life is good!
I am a happy woman right now. Go Sarah!

I’ll expose a D.C. secret that the media won’t tell you
Biden’s a drunk
Those of you who know–who’ve spent time with an alcoholic–know that look, and Biden has it. He looked like a surly drunk badly needing another shot
Meanwhile, Morris, just ripped Skeletor apart……
Janos Hunyadi on October 2, 2008 at 11:39 PM
Wow! Colmes is getting the beat down by Dick Morris! Freaking awesome!

I actually thought the debate was about even. But Palin was so likeable! It looked like even Biden was charmed by her.
A couple of things about Biden: What’s with his eyes? Remember when Greta V. had her eyes done? Biden’s looked like that.
And does he actually know the name of the country just North of Israel? I didn’t think he was very solid on Mid-East policy. Palin actually seemed better informed than Biden… And more emotionally moved by the thought of peace in the Holy Land.
And speaking about emotional. I was put off by Biden crying about his family yet again! I mean what in the world made him start crying? That Palin and her husband didn’t have health insurance? He acted like she said something that offended him or something. I don’t know–too fake for my taste.

Sarah did great tonight. The best part was when she said, “Say it ain’t so Joe.”

Tivo alert: The tool Colmes being destroyed by some guest on the Hannity & Colmes. Not sure if it is repeated on FoxNews or not…

Yeah! (Sorry, I am not watching show, just heard via phone call from son).

I was watching this on my 50″ Plasma on Fox and had CNN in the PIP in the corner. I could see the opinion ticker that they had that measured the responses between male and female in the corner. First, I found it interesting that they would separate people that way vice dems and reps. But I noticed that there was a distinct difference between the way men and women approved of her. Whenever she was talking about issues that were pretty liberal, the women liked her and disliked her when she was strong on defense. The men were pretty much the opposite. Then there’s the catty factor, no fat-assed gender questionable pig sitting on a couch with a box of wine thinking that gives her some class, is ever going to vote for a woman like Sarah who had children, loves her man, raises her babies and still shows up for work and looks like a centerfold. She is everything those cows were taught to hate by the lesbian lobby, I mean National Organization for Women.

Glad I Tivo’d H&C tonight… my man Fred Thompson was on!

Not this conservative. Here’s what concluded me to believe Palin ‘ate his lunch.’:
1. More often than not, she was on the offensive.
2. Body language. He seemed uncomfortable, fidgity, changing expressions, his appeals for dramatics, etc. She was all smiles throughout. I think this goes to show the confidence level of each; she was, he wasn’t.
3. His propensity to lie…
4. His incessant need to campaign against Bush.
5. I also found it noteworthy that his eyes were fixed on Ifill (as if looking for an ally to relate to his BS). Palin? the cameras. She was speaking to us. She was in her element.
Not exactly a recipe for success. She smoked him!

92.5% of the 100 million households mentioned by Sen. Biden believe that 75% of the statistics Sen. Biden used were made up.

Face lift, hair plugs and teeth whitening. Actually McCain could probably benefit from that last one.
Dudley Smith on October 2, 2008 at 11:54 PM
It’s interesting you say that. I was watching it online and couldn’t read facial expressions, not that it would have helped since the audio was out of sinc, but in the last third of the debate it sounded like he was slurring his speech. I wondered if he had been drinking or maybe had a stroke or something.

My view is that Sarah Palin won the debate about the future and that while one can say Joe Biden won the argument about the past, Dick Cheeny was not there to defend the Bush Admininstration and thus Joe Biden should not credit for it. Cheney would have killed Biden. That would have been enjoyable to see, but the important thing tonight is that, as Peggy Noonan has stated, Sarah Palin killed Joe Biden.

I’m intrigued by your “scoop”. I know “that look”, for those who don’t know it, can be replicated to familiarize yourself with it. Just have someone unfocus their eyes like they do when they look at one of those “3-D” books or until they’re seeing 2 of you. That’s “the look” which sometimes is accompanied by a subtle slackening of facial muscles. Teach your kids to see it before they get into a car with a friend who swears they’re not drunk. It can save their life.
Now, Janos Hunyadi, tell us all about Biden, please!

Mmmm, Biden as smoked ham. Apple stuffed in mouth. The thought wrenches the stomach.

Go to “Flopping Aces — V.P. Debate Reaction” for an informative list of Joe Biden’s false statements during the debate. I had the reaction many times during the debate when Biden was talking of “Hey, wait a minute, that’s not right.” Well, Biden was not right — frequently. We need to publicize the list of false statements. Biden did his usual thing of saying whatever was convenient to try to win an argument. It should be held against him.
Phil Byler on October 3, 2008 at 1:12 AM
Anyone watching the CSPAN version: After the debate Biden walked over to Palin front and center stage, and was rubbing her arm and said something to her which took the smile off of her face. Did anyone else see that?
johnnyU on October 3, 2008 at 7:53 AM
Am leaning towards mcCain again, but it has little to do with the GOP as a Party. I just like Sarah, if her brand of honesty were allowed to find a voice in DC, things would be different right now. So, the only way I can have Sarah is to also have McCain. But, I’m also watching the financial bill very closely too and, even though it is not perfect, my family is now feeling the crunch with impending lay offs and retirement accounts at stake. I suppose, in the end, this will have to matter more than Palin’s excellent performance. That’s a pity as I really, really think she’s what this country needs. Congratulations on a big win Sarah!

I think Greta had hers done again!

I don’t really have to time (well more honestly the inclination) to read through the other 9 pages of comments to see if this has been said but did anyone else catch Biden’s almost boasting of essentially being a shadow President?
It believe it was when they were talking about what their roles as VP would be and Palin talked about taking on the specific tasks she and McCain had decided would be her role while Biden talked about how he would be with Obama in every meeting on every topic. It sounded, to me at least, that he was looking less to be VP then the Presidential Regent.
Did anyone else catch that or was just me?
