A few people have e-mailed to say that the livestream in Ed’s open thread complicates comment discussion by slowing refresh times, so here’s a no-frills alternative. Take your pick.

While we wait for the main event, “enjoy” the last installment in her series with Couric. They saved a doozy for the finale.

Game face!

I doubt it, I bet she thinks he is truly a hero and he has given her a national platform. What is not to like about that?

Cindy Munford on October 3, 2008 at 12:30 AM

Joe “Walter” Biden is a loser!

eigafan on October 3, 2008 at 12:31 AM

One lie on a list noted something that confused me when I first heard it from Biden:

7. HEALTH INSURANCE: Biden falsely said McCain will raise taxes on people’s health insurance coverage — they get a tax credit to offset any tax hike. Independent fact checkers have confirmed this attack is false

Biden said that an average family would have their taxable income increased about $12,000 if the cost of employer-provided health insurance premiums are included in income. He said that’s not offset by McCain’s $5,000 tax credit. Actually, it’ll probably be a wash. The income would be subject to tax, but what’s the rate? It could be one of the 38% of households that pays no tax. So, estimating that the income would be subject to income tax at 15%, that’s additional income tax of $1,800 which is offset by the $5,000 tax credit–and, indeed, may be refundable too.

I conclude that Biden’s mere comparison of $12,000 to $5,000 is intellectually dishonest. He’d be okay if the $5,000 were merely a tax deduction (reduces taxable income) rather than a tax credit (reduces tax payable).

Biden needs a tax lesson.

That’s probably a better gauge then here because all the Inside the Beltway folks are impressed with Sen. Biden’s senate talk. They say he has a better grasp of “the facts” but it’s just gum flapping. And good grief he’s been there a thirty years, which I consider a drawback.

Cindy Munford on October 3, 2008 at 12:22 AM

I hate to say it but rolling facts get lost on the public like an insurance seninar. They’ll think the same thing they said about McCain during the first debate. Not as engaged with the audience or American People. I don’t think McCain was as bad, but I think the comparison is the same. ANd it shouldn’t be that way, it should be true facts presented in an intersting way, but come sundown tomorrow, America will be back on the bus with the Sarah-Cuda hype.

Hey, I’ll take it.

You may be right about her thinking. She doesn’t know enough about him, then.

trailboss on October 3, 2008 at 12:33 AM

I emailed the Commission and said that I thought Ms. Ifil should have to acknowledge the book at the beginning of the debate and I don’t think that happened. I am pretty sure that all the hoopla caused a little attitude adjustment. We will never know for sure.

Cindy Munford on October 3, 2008 at 12:14 AM

I emailed them too. Her potential monitary gain should have disqualified her IMO.

If I could I’d have filled Sarah’s hotel room up with flowers. She deserves it!

JellyToast on October 3, 2008 at 12:34 AM

I liked how Palin called Biden a liar by referring to the way things are in DC.

By the way, are Americans sitting around the kitchen table looking to DC for help? After this past three weeks, does anyone want Barney Frank and Chris Dodd and Reid and Pelosi doing anything for them?

For starters, I want those people completely out of my life.

BuckeyeSam on October 3, 2008 at 12:36 AM

Domino on October 3, 2008 at 12:34 AM

It was a great night and I hope the allow her to go out to the American people, that’s her strong suit.

Cindy Munford on October 3, 2008 at 12:36 AM

Palin did a really nice job. I haven’t enjoyed a debate so much since Cheney destroyed John Edwards. Speaking of Cheney, WTF was with that ‘Darth Cheney’ riff that Biden went on? Guess he had to throw some red meat to the fruit cake wing of the left since they probably got a bit lost with all the big words after the opening statements.
If I was Cheney, I would find that lack of faith..disturbing. I think he ought to put the force choke hold on Biden long enough to make his plugs pop out of his head. Disrepectful.

austinnelly on October 3, 2008 at 12:25 AM

It’s PC to be that way for both of them. The media has made it a litmus test in the way people discuss them too. But I think history will judge them differntly when the world truly understands the what was at stake in this century with militant radical Islam. To our POTUS and VPOTUS this war is the issue of their administration. And God Forbid Obama gets in power and gets the daily SITREP from OEF and OIF, he’ll change his tune too.

I don’t think I phrased that very well. Most of the pundits that critique the debate when it is over are the insiders, I think they just gravitate to Sen. Biden because he is one of them. Folks in Australia are probably more like the average American person sitting in their living room wonder what in the world that man is babbling about.

That’s the line of attack I would take. I wrote a letter to the editor of our paper early this evening about Gov. Palin being described as out of her league. I wondered which league she was suppose to aspire to, the financial wizards, the brain trust in Washington or the media who weekly give us some new end of the world disaster that is never what they portray?

The Fox broadcast had both mics still up.

Maybe I am not overreacting.

- MM has it as 6:1 letting Joe rebut things (I wasn’t keeping score, but it sure seemed lopsided)

- Definitely some loaded question with a negative pretense taken strait from the moonbats.

- There was the one question to Joe that openly praised him (need to look back at the transcript for the actually wording) but it was nearly straight out of some of the jokes posted- “Senator, how is it that you are so awesome and your running mate is a divine gift to our nation? Governor, how is it that an inept bumkin like you get’s hitched to an old fossil that will likely drop dead in the next 10 minutes?)

Wow. 22 pages of comments here. Why is that we wonder? There is this fleeting hope for the country kind of percolating out there. Yes its republican but mostly its free markets and happy warrior and winning real wars. We have a standard bearer for our party now. We did before but she was getting filtered like a repackaged Camel. I’ll vote for her and fight for her wherever I can . . . in this election or the next, in this life or the next.

JonPrichard on October 3, 2008 at 12:57 AM

Sarah Palin has just shown us why she is qualified to be President of the United States.

She just played the Obama/Biden campaign, the MSM, and the DNC like a fiddle.

They took the bait, to the point where the Biden debate strategy was to go after McCain and take it easy on Palin.

She completely led them to underestimate her, even after repeated warnings not to, (even once from Bil Clinton), and then she destroyed him.

Now, that is the kind of woman I want running foreign policy.

Being powerful is like being a lady. If you have to tell people you are, you aren’t.

Same here Cindy. I’m getting ready to retire from the military in June next year. I want two things from my government.

1. I want them to see this war through to the end in both Iraq and Afghanistan so we’re not attacked anymore and the 14 folks from my brigade haven’t died for nothing.

2. I want to open a small business that isn’t hampered in an already shakey economy with a bunch of new taxes, more entitlements than we can pay for and enviromental regulations that don’t give even the first consideration to how badly business can be affected by bad ecology protection legislation.

Pretty much like Sarah said, win the war and get the fusk out of my way.

hawkdriver on October 3, 2008 at 1:00 AM

Not sure if it’s been said and I ain’t going through all 22 pages…

I have 1 disappointment: Ifill tossed up a perfect set up for Palin to blast Congress for it’s utter failure to deal with the Fanny/ Freddy, but pawned it off on Wall St. initially and in the 1st redux. Later she came back to tying in Congress some, but I think that the McCain camp missed an opportunity there.

The entire lot of McCain camp handlers are f***ing worthless. I was leery about McCain early on in the primaries, but he swung me on board during a CSPAN aired townhall and radio interview during the primaries.

As soon as he won the primary, however, they have over-scripted the snot out of him. The speech he gave in front of the green screen on the night Obama declared himself the primary winner by adoration was an atrocity… and they have not improved. Palin came out and they sucked the life out of her as well.

She and McCain hit it out of the park without fail as soon as they drop the talking points. McCain should ditch his entire handler and speech staff and stick with plain Straight Talk for the rest of the campaign.

… and they need to unload on the do nothing Dems and Fanny/ Freddy.

I have to give his handlers one little bit of credit. McCain won me late. I can’t remember which PAC or meeting it was, but Guliani endorsed the guy (Fox carried it, of course). McCain looked like a whooped puppy, and he said something like, I get it , you’re not a bunch of bigots, you just really like law and order.

He looked like someone took him in a windowless room with a telephone book. I think Guliani knows people who know people, but someone definely smacked McCain around about his amnesty plans.

I saw and heard the same thing. You are completely correct.

It reinforced my disgust for eyefull…

Not only did Ifill say that, but she then met Biden’s wife and said on C-Span, to a full mic “It’ great to finally meet you”.

You guys must have some super sensitive hearing I don’t have.
And so what if she said that to Mrs. Biden?
Good Lord.

Maybe they should just let John be John?
csdeven on October 3, 2008 at 1:31 AM

You REALLY want the GOP to lose the entire conservative base?

The only time we are even slightly happy is when John ISN’T John.

LegendHasIt on October 3, 2008 at 2:24 AM

Ummmmmmm no questions on the impact of illegal aliens or the ill effects of “social engineering” gone awry……..?

How about accountability for those who caused our current “crisis”, don’t they need to testify under oath?

What, no “naming of names” that John McCain promised to do with pork filled bills like the current “Financial Bailout Plan”?

Can I call you joe

She said at the beginning of the debate.

Sah addressed him as Senator Biden….. never once as Joe.

She won…. I watched it twice…. SHE WON….. !!!!!!!

We got the wrong guy on the ticket…..

Kini on October 3, 2008 at 2:48 AM

Sarah….RESPECT.

She was thrown into the pressure cooker and has responded with class.

This woman has some major stones to step up the plate in this high stake environment.

Good on her.

Somebody needs to go to the Home Depot near Biden’s house and ask employees how often they see him there.

Mark1971 on October 3, 2008 at 1:21 AM

You know if it were Palin they would. Good grief, CNN sent someone to that little island that borders a Russian island!

Mark1971 on October 3, 2008 at 1:21 AM

Have you seen Joe Biden’s 6,800 sq ft house? There’s nothing “near” it except more house (and a lake and a forrest, and other really, really nice houses).

Does he really expect us to believe that he painted/plumbed/floored that thing?

29Victor on October 3, 2008 at 3:22 AM

I have the entire debate here in LiveLeak format.

Sapwolf on October 3, 2008

Thanks, Sapwolf, I hadn’t seen that before. Some good wealthy Republican should pony up and run that whole thing nationally, as is. Don’t worry about the minimal focus on John McCain. He’s just filler. Sarah Palin is the future of the Republican party. Let’s celebrate that.

SKYFOX on October 3, 2008 at 5:06 AM

Is there anyone looking into Ifil’s moderation at this time? I think that she might have done the following:

1) Allowed Biden’s responses to go overtime. There were some responses that I felt like went 3 minutes, but when Sarah was on a roll listing times McCain went against Bush, Ifil (rudely) interrupted her.

2) It seemed like Biden got a rebuttal whenever he wanted, but Sarah got a rebuttal whenever she DIDN’T want one. This was a potentially devastating strategy, because everyone was watching for Ifil to ask Sarah “gotcha” questions, but instead Ifil only had to force her to respond to Biden’s “gotcha” questions.

That being said Sarah won it hands down.

Thank you, thank you. I need to go to bed. Great night. Thanks to all.

Happy Birthday, you’re 18 now so please go out and vote for the more experienced, honest, and capable candidate. (n.O.)

Waterboy on October 3, 2008 at 6:41 AM

As soon as he won the primary, however, they have over-scripted the snot out of him. The speech he gave in front of the green screen on the night Obama declared himself the primary winner by adoration was an atrocity… and they have not improved. Palin came out and they sucked the life out of her as well.

She and McCain hit it out of the park without fail as soon as they drop the talking points. McCain should ditch his entire handler and speech staff and stick with plain Straight Talk for the rest of the campaign.

… and they need to unload on the do nothing Dems and Fanny/ Freddy.

Damiano on October 3, 2008 at 1:40 AM

Yup. The McCain campaign HQ needs the following sign plastered up in big glowing letters:

“You’ve got nothing to lose, stupid”

LOL! I am probably the only person in the world to say NO to being 18 again, Nobama.

Cindy Munford on October 3, 2008 at 7:24 AM

Did anyone notice that when Palin and Biden went down after the debate and spoke to Ifill… she seemed cordial but dismissive to Palin but I could swear she said “You did really well” to Plugs.

I may be mistaken and my disgust with Ifill may be getting the best of me…

Can anyone else confirm this?

Damiano on October 3, 2008 at 12:46 AM

I could have sworn I heard it too. In fact, I turned to my husband and asked if Ifill just said “you did really well” to Greasy Joe.

IT WAS A STRATEGY!!! He fell right into her trap!!! “There ya go again, Joe”!!!!!!! Said the spider to the fly!!!!!! Joe got caught in her web!

Yes I agree totally. My husband who’s usually very reserved was blown away by the difference in treatment. He was the one ranting for a change and I was the one shrugging and asking him why he was so surprised!
