New McCain ad: Just a reminder that Biden’s an idiot

posted at 1:35 pm on October 2, 2008 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

Think of this as the opening ceremony to tonight’s Olympics, with Greasy Joe as the torchbearer who somehow manages to set himself on fire. Tapper makes a nice catch at ABC: The ‘Cuda is already wielding talking points about Biden ripping on Obama during the primaries for his vote to defund the war. Expect to see that tonight when the subject turns to Iraq in an attempt to bait him into losing his cool. Everyone knows that JB can BS his way through the Q&A; the challenge for him lies simply in not coming off like an abject jackass. If he can’t manage that for 90 minutes, he deserves to be replaced by Hillary.

Awesome!

“What am I talking about?” HA!

Abby Adams on October 2, 2008 at 1:38 PM

Please tell me there’s a huge ad buy for that!!!

I am no fan of Biden – believe me. But is this a little sophomoric? Of course the dem ads are too, but why us?

Joe never fails to entertain.

Keep ‘em comin’!

tree hugging sister on October 2, 2008 at 1:40 PM

It’s about time they went back to these ads. After the incredible success of the Paris Hilton and Moses ads, you’d think they would run nothing but this stuff. I was beginning to think they enjoyed playing defense.

Ronnie on October 2, 2008 at 1:40 PM

Biden isnt gonna lose his cool. No way. I’m not even being sarcastic.

Cardiganfox on October 2, 2008 at 1:40 PM

If he can’t manage that for 90 minutes, he deserves to be replaced by Hillary.

Please don’t help Joe Biden with talking points, otherwise, you AllahPundit just might be supporting a redneck.

Insta-Classic!

ConservativePartyNow on October 2, 2008 at 1:40 PM

Allah:

Your continual sniping at both Vice Presidential candidates is more embarrasing then Joe Biden’s gaffes. They are at least funny.

The idea of replacing Biden with Hillary is so far-fetched that to continue to talk about it destroys your credibility. McCain will eat Obama alive if he were to dump Biden at this point. It was his first major decision and he flubbed it. At that point he will have lost the election no matter who he picks. You don’t get a do-over as president will become the theme.

jerryofva on October 2, 2008 at 1:41 PM

Heck… even the music just makes me giggle.

Abby Adams on October 2, 2008 at 1:41 PM

Best ad I’ve seen from the McCain campaign. Now make a good one with Obama’s gaffes.

MadisonConservative on October 2, 2008 at 1:41 PM

Didn’t Joe say that he wanted those who make more than 250Gs to be patriotic and pay more taxes, not 42Gs…did I miss it?

Christine on October 2, 2008 at 1:41 PM

Snort-worthy.

Y-not on October 2, 2008 at 1:42 PM

The music was alittle before our time, but good schtuff.

captivated_dem on October 2, 2008 at 1:42 PM

I think that the repeated “What am I talking about?” spot was particularly effective. It had me laughing out loud after the 3rd time. Folks who are not familiar with the last spot (where he tells the local politician in the wheelchair to standup) might wonder what was so embarrassing, but other than that, I think it was pretty fair ad. I give it an 80 on a scale of 100.

kgs_mvs on October 2, 2008 at 1:42 PM

Color me skeptical – I would prefer ads showing the top five recipients of Fannie Mae hush money, and how they maneuvered to steal from us, and now are in charge of writing a bill to ‘fix’ it.

Vashta.Nerada on October 2, 2008 at 1:42 PM

I’d rather see a Gwen Ifill is in a conflict of interest ad.

CanadianGuy on October 2, 2008 at 1:42 PM

Cute, but doesn’t it lose sight of the goal? How will that change a voter’s mind? Maybe I’m too focused on the issues…I’ll concede that if there’s a point to be made that this will win votes. Is there such a point?

I think he would do better to let others complain about that one. Obama is the one who can’t handle a debate in enemy territory (Fox News).

Great ad but of course if Palin gaffes tonight it could be turned around on them.

echosyst on October 2, 2008 at 1:46 PM

Why do so many political ads involve having a fake tv that we’re watching the ad play on? I didn’t invest in an enormous big screen tv just to have ad makers cut my screen size by 75%.

O/T: I have a friend that is looking for good background on the financial mess. So far she’s been told “Bush and his cronies screwed the pooch” and “Bush kept pushing to loosen up mortgage rules even when people said slow down”. I’m tired of letting people get away with lies, but, I want to make sure I go in there fully armed with lots of information and sources for her. If anyone knows of a good source (and, the less partisan the source is considered, the better), please let me know.

JadeNYU on October 2, 2008 at 1:47 PM

LOL

lodge on October 2, 2008 at 1:47 PM

I hope her sense of timing is good and she doesn’t try to force this in. There should be plenty of opportunity, but Ifill may not want to get into Iraq issues too much to reduce that opportunity.

Ready to gaffe? I’m laughing at that!

Good stuff, and I liked the music too.

Anna on October 2, 2008 at 1:48 PM

They could have actually made an extra minute with Biden gaffes. They left out the “clean and articulate” comment and the Obama can’t take my Berettas away from me. Oh, and the clean coal gaffe just last week.

carbon_footprint on October 2, 2008 at 1:48 PM

Palin should also bring up Biden telling a PA voter that there shouldn’t be clean-coal plants in PA, but they should outsource them to China. Then say, “The McCain/Palin campaign supports clean-coal plants and blue-collar jobs in PA, OH, WV, and wherever else there’s coal!

Steve Z on October 2, 2008 at 1:48 PM

That was awesome; Loved it. More people need to be aware that if Barack strokes out, (alot of risks factors for the “one”) and Biden has an aneurysm, we’ll all be saluting President Pelosi! (Oh God, I have to go hav quiet time now)

You’ve got to turn the handle on your hand generator a little faster to get enough “juice” to your ‘puter to get the vid to play upinak.

Then point your left hand south with your fingers open as an antenna.

JadeNYU on October 2, 2008 at 1:47 PM

It’s how they’re compensating for YouTube video quality. If they expanded it to the size of your fancy TV, it would look like total crap.

JustTruth101 on October 2, 2008 at 1:43 PM

You’re right, assuming McCain never runs another ad, holds another town hall or sits down for another interview. Alas, this ad is one in a series, and it makes a fine point in that context. Don’t make the mistake of judging ads in a vacuum; people don’t watch them that way.

Ronnie on October 2, 2008 at 1:49 PM

oh my god that was so funny.

People generally don’t vote for someone who’s made a laughingstock of themselves.

This looks a little like a very very tiny warning shot to me. There is so much ammunition left, my guess is that this is setting the stage for their anticipated response.

Jerry said: “The idea of replacing Biden with Hillary is so far-fetched that to continue to talk about it destroys your credibility.”
I choose to think that he’s kidding (the alternative would make me have to empty yet another bucket) and I view ‘credibility’ as a relative thing–in this case. We have to take what everyone says with a grain of salt and a shot of something strong, when needed.
I do like the phrase “abject jackass”…say that 3 times fast.

There should be a part two that includes the FDR reference, “My state was a slave state,” the YouTube debate referring to the guy asking about the second amendment that there is something “wrong with him,” reporter has to work on his pecs, and coal debacle.

Sergei on October 2, 2008 at 1:39 PM

You have to play to your target audience. That is a cold hard reality. If McCain, or even Obama, simply talked about how nice they are and how no one would pay attention. And yes, I am not giving the voters credit because they don’t deserve any.

Those that are actually undecided are only going to respond to simple soundbite type ads like this. This is only the beginning. Obama is going to get beat over the head during the next four weeks. Hopefully it is not too late.

grdred944 on October 2, 2008 at 1:53 PM

Exactly! Biden gaffes are like dog bites man.

Sergei on October 2, 2008 at 1:45 PM

Maybe to us, but no necessarily to mainstream voters.

This is good timing as it preempts the inevitable (liberal) political pundits’ talking points about how experienced and competent Biden is compared to Palin.

I would do a second one, run back to back with this one, with some of the other more serious “gaffes,” like the clean coal one which I took to mean he wants to outsource coal-based energy to China. Run the comic one, then run one with clips showing that he isn’t just a clown, he’s a dangerous one.

Y-not on October 2, 2008 at 1:54 PM

That’s right. I forgot it was a youtube vid.

As for why there was no FDR reference, it’s most likely because the average American would be sitting there thinking, “Well, what’s wrong with that?” I’m embarrassed to admit that I caught the fact that T.V. wasn’t around in 1929 right away, but, only hours later did the light go on and I realized that FDR wasn’t POTUS in 1929 (and I’m not exactly one of the dumb kids).
