Luntz focus group: Palin in a blowout; Update: CBS, CNN polls say Biden won?

Lest anyone think Luntz cooks these things, his presidential debate FG was basically a wash tilting slightly towards Obama and his FG for C-SPAN shortly after Palin was picked was decidedly chilly towards her.
The electoral math is sufficiently unforgiving that I can’t quite believe this is a gamechanger, but clearly she did as well as anyone could have hoped. Clutch.
Update: At the very least, Palin’s alive for 2012. A nice consolation prize if things don’t pan out this year.
Update: It’s a Democratic year, I guess.
CBS News and Knowledge Networks have conducted a nationally representative poll of 473 uncommitted voters to get their immediate reaction to tonight’s vice presidential debate…
Forty-six percent of the uncommitted voters surveyed say Democrat Joe Biden won the debate, compared to 21 percent for Republican Sarah Palin. Thirty-three percent said it was a tie.
Eighteen percent of previously uncommitted percent say they are now committed to the Obama-Biden ticket. Ten percent say they are now committed to McCain-Palin. Seventy-one percent are still uncommitted.
Those results are partial; the good news is that Palin helped herself hugely, with 55 percent now more favorable to her and only 14 percent less so.
Can’t find a link yet for CNN but Taegan Goddard says they have it 51/36 for Greasy Joe.

Really, you guys are still doing Mr. Axelrod proud.

Hopefully someone will point out fairly quickly that the taxes on $12,000 in healthcare premiums do not exceed $5,000. I’ve heard people bring up the other ten or eleven lies, but this one seems to have slipped by.
vitocorleone99 on October 3, 2008 at 12:33 AM
I just did a poll using CBS/CNN method. 98% for Palin .03% for Biden. My other dog went to sleep before it was over and was undecided. The cat voted for Biden. Sort of confirms what me and the dogs have thought for quite awhile. (The cat’s retarded)
Which makes my poll 987% more accurate.
BruceB on October 3, 2008 at 12:34 AM
That’s not her job, that’s McCain’s job. Her job was to be taken seriously as a condidate for VP after weeks of vicious media bashing. Don’t tell me you think Biden has changed one single vote? I don’t like Obama but I just love that Joe? Hard to believe.

Dude behind Greta checking out the hot McCain chick…haha. He so wants a date.
SouthernGent on October 3, 2008 at 12:35 AM
No matter how big Sarah won tonight, the MSM narrative will not change. In fact, they’re too in bed with Obama to even give her any credit at all. Their political orgy is plain for all to see.
That newsroom anonymous who wrote to Professor Reynolds was right. “The fix is in, and it’s working.” There is nothing we can do to change that.

She brought results. She dominated tonight’s debates.
But suit yourself. I enjoy all enjoyable moments.
Spirit of 1776 on October 3, 2008 at 12:36 AM
Here’s the thing about the debate tonight. I know how I felt about it; and it was mainly based on my bias. I thought she won the debate, but only just. I’m sure the other side thinks Biden won. If that’s what I thought, then what do these idiotic “undecideds”, who don’t know what their beliefs are, think? I have no idea what to expect from them because I don’t think like them. I think they base a lot of their information on what they feel, not what they think, and by what the media tells them to think (i.e., the dubious meme that Palin is an inexperienced moron).

Of course CBS and CNN said that Biden won. So will ABC and NBC. They are so far in the tank for B. Hussein that they’re getting narcosis.
I saw it as a tie which doesn’t help McC at all. I’m praying and fasting for this one. Whatever happens happens. My hope is in Jesus Christ not the Republican party.

I’m hoping this is the plan. If McCain blows this wide open, the election will be his.
Conservative_SAHM on October 3, 2008 at 12:42 AM
You may not remember this, but the undecideds were unmoved by Palin’s speech at the convention.
And yet, as soon as she appeared McCain took the lead in the polls, and did not relinquish it until this entire financial thing blew up.
DelD on October 3, 2008 at 12:45 AM
Joe could have pass out on stage 5 min. into the debate and Cnn, cbs, msnbc all would fine people who don,t even know what day of the week it is who would say joe won the debate.Do you realey belive they would say anything good about Palin?
thmcbb on October 3, 2008 at 12:46 AM
It wasn’t at all a tie, but even if it were … Assuming that McCain’s poll numbers dropped in part due to Palin’s recent interviews, why wouldn’t he get at least a portion of that back?
Ronnie on October 3, 2008 at 12:46 AM
CNN and CBS are in the tank for Obama, so why do we care about what they report? The Luntz focus group probably more accurately reflects the ordinary American’s reaction, which is that they love Sarah Palin. She is one of them.
Phil Byler on October 3, 2008 at 12:47 AM
Even the Guardian giving her praise.
Ripclawe on October 3, 2008 at 12:47 AM
I very seriously doubt that that will happen.
McCain will never ‘out’ his Democrat Fraternity brothers. He may occasionally argue with them, but he always has been very much a “Senatorius Uber Alles’, defending his peers at the expense of us commoners.

My sense is that (however uncommon it may be) is that people WANT to vote for John McCain, but they were worried about Sarah Palin being “a heartbeat away”.
Sarah didn’t just hit a home run. She crushed it out of the park.
Tuning Spork on October 3, 2008 at 12:50 AM
I’m watching Cris Matthews show right now and they have a bunch of libtard kids cheering every time the Obama ticket has good news and booing whenever they have anything positive to say about Palin. They also have a bunch of far left slogans on makeshift signs.
Cr4sh Dummy on October 3, 2008 at 12:52 AM
McCain-Palin are going to win. You watch. Obama’s and Biden’s positions are too liberal for the country. McCain and Palin stand for the country. It will come together in th elast two weeks of the election.
Phil Byler on October 3, 2008 at 12:58 AM
The vote on the Drudge Report so far has Sarah Palin winning the debate with 71% of the votes.
Phil Byler on October 3, 2008 at 1:00 AM
It happened so frequently, I didn’t want to get riled so I let it go. But HOW MANY CHARACTERS DID BIDEN ASSASSINATE TONIGHT?
Judge Bork, Biden’s proud to be a pure partisan bitch.
VP Cheney, most dangerous man alive, worse than bin Laden.
Gen. Petraeus, doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
John McCain, Biden’s the revised maverick aisle jumper with military prowess and coordinated diplomacy.
Sarah Palin, if she doesn’t give Biden what he wants, he’s going to scream “drill, drill, drill.”

Biden lost big time in this debate, but there is someone else who lost even bigger.

His sole viewers are kooks in tin-foil hats, and he is at the bottom ratings-wise for that network. To make kooks in tin-foil hats happy, you damn well better be a kook wearing one, and have plenty in the background.

The only forceful points that Biden made tonight were backed up with factual errors. Obama is not ready, Joe said so. Joe told Obama not to vote against the funding for the troops. Obama did anyway. Etc, etc, etc.

I certainly hope that is the plan. Oreilly fought with Barney Frank tonight. I would love to see that guy go down after this. Chris Dodd all of them who have been hiding this from the American people!!!! These politicians need to be held accountable. But McCain probably won’t do it. I just don’t think he has the stomach for it.
petunia on October 3, 2008 at 1:16 AM
What? Two left-leaning news organizations declaring that a Democrat won a debate in which he got his butt handed to him in?
unpossible.
They decided he won long before the debate started. The only work they had was finding the way to justify it.
On both substance and style, Biden lost. Anything of substance, he either contradicts himself, makes up facts, or comes off as another Thurston Howell III. (I asked this guy [from my limo] [at the full service station] how much he pays to full up his tank. He said he didn’t know! [Actually, my chauffeur asked him, and the guy told him to get lost].”
I don’t know about you, but when gas costs so much that I can’t fill up my tank, I pay even more attention on how much it costs to fill it half way. People like Biden don’t know, because they don’t care. That’s what the taxpayer’s money is for.
And listening him chide the status quo for the current economic meltdown is just as funny. He’s the representative of old politics, and you have to either be really biased or pretty stupid not to see that.
Exit comment question: aren’t the Bosniaks some offshoot of the Decepticons?

Allahpundit. I am tired of your carping about Sarah Palin. She won that election. If you have negative feeling toward the Republican candidates, why don’t you just move to the Daily Kos. They seem to share your opinion. I am removing this from my must read blogs, unless Ed is the writer.

McCain might have thought the bipartisan position on the bailout was the right choice, however you could see in the “life is unfair” interview he did yesterday that he was truly upset that he wasn’t getting the credit he thought he deserved. I think any remaining thoughts in his mind that he is going to get treated fairly by the media are surly 100% gone at this point. There is nothing left holding him back from a full force attack.

Phfft. According to HuffPo:
On the other hand, Frank Luntz just quizzed his focus group on FOX (which was, strangely enough, sponsored by Budweiser, owned by Anheuser-Busch, of which Cindy McCain’s Hensley company is the third largest distributor).
Get a clue! The only people who loved Palin are conservatives. Independents and undecideds are going for Joe!

Biden did well, but he was expected to, so I doubt that he won anyone over for Obama. Palin did reasonably well, and very well on style and “cool”, and was not expected to do well at all, so I think that she probably pulled over/back a small percentage of Independents and undecideds, although not enough for McCain to win .

If some of the rest of us seem to have more faith in him than you do… for me at least, it’s new-found faith.
I was absolutely convinced he was going to pick Romney, Pawlenty, or Lieberman for his VP.
After that most pleasant of surprises, I’m willing to have faith another week on the financial crisis. I’m just hoping the bill is through the House in time for McCain to open up with both barrels over the weekend and take the fight straight to Obama in the debate Tuesday.
ClintACK on October 3, 2008 at 1:46 AM
Isn’t it fitting that Linda Douglas, a former member of the MSN, is a spokesperson for the Obama campaign?!!?
I liked hearing (and seeing) Kristen Powers say, in the run up to the debate, that the media is in the tank for Obama.
Gohawgs on October 3, 2008 at 1:47 AM
I’ll be around as long as I can. Fall gets real busy for me.
I agree. She did well and it really just gets the “Palin is a dope” monkey off the table. Now McCain needs to go after these turds just like Sarah did.
Another value in this debate was to expose the talking points that Oslime-a will use when the issues of troops bombing civilians etc are used in the next debate.
From what I seen of Biden’s answers, I think McCain gets the better of the exchange. So, I say go after Oslime-a on FM and FM, de-funding the troops, meeting with Iran, tax increases, etc. I don’t think Oslime-a has any kind of responses that he can use to defend his past positions without comeing off as a liar.
AND, we might just see a shift in the way the MSM reports this stuff. Sarah was sharp and that might just give the MSM the cover they need to be more balanced without appearing to be anti-black.
Yeah, I know…Keep dreamin’.

If McCain uses ANY of the ammunition, including any of the examples you give, I’ll be happily surprised.
We both hope that McCain hits Obama with stuff like that. But based on a long history and personal knowledge, I’m betting he will not; while with no historical evidence to the contrary, you believe he will. Who is the dope?

She dominated this night, but as usual, the MSM is gonna spin, spit out polls that assert Biden won, and I’ll probably get an email from Obama telling me now “all the polls agree, Biden was the clear winner, won’t you please give a brother $5.”
El_Terrible on October 3, 2008 at 1:51 AM
If he doesn’t, then he doesn’t deserve to be President.
But I think (hope) you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
The one thing you can count on with McCain is that he means what he says. He’s said over and over, “I will make them famous. You will know their names.” Heck, the main theme of his campaign is that he’ll go and fight the corrupt legislators in Congress. His campaign strategy so far has been to SHOW rather than TELL — and he’s been handed a golden opportunity to stop talking about his primary theme and actually show it, in two parts: (i) Country First; (ii) Taking on Corruption.

I trust that Luntz tries to be fair with his focus groups. I’ve seen groups that have gone against the Republican as often as I’ve seen groups that have gone against the Democrat. I have never noticed any bias on his part, although he does seem to be excited about his job and it is easy to think that that excitement is about the results themselves.

You know, it’s the US Justice Dept that would be involved here. The US Justice Dept is an executive branch thing. John McCain, minority US Senator can’t initiate executive branch actions. George W Bush could though, if he wanted to help his party keep the White House and perhaps win a lot of congressional seats this time around.

Sorry but those polls are total, unvarnished horse$hit. “473 uncommitted voters” in the CBS News rolodex? Give me a break. I wonder how many Code Pink members are in that 473?
I can face a loss and see it for what it is but when the polls are that far off from observable reality and the media is running the sampling you have to face the fact that most of these polls are being very, very heavily massaged.

There have been two debates so far. McCain won the first debate. Palin won the second debate. It’s that simple.
I realize Morris asserts that Obama won the first debate but that I don;t understand at all. Obama showed ignorance of foreign policy. McCain was wooping Obama in the last 30 minutes.
So, going forward, we should be saying that the McCain-Palin ticket has established itself as clearly the superior one.
