Video: McCain gets testy over media’s criticism of Palin

Via Tapper. The shot at Biden near the end for his FDR gaffe is simply golden. Is it true that the public’s still on his side vis-a-vis the ‘Cuda, though? If you believe Quinnipiac, her net favorables are now negative in Florida and Pennsylvania and even in Ohio. Pew’s national poll still has her at +11, but that’s down from +22 just two weeks ago (which is where Biden’s at now). As to whether she’s qualified to be president, the split after the first week of September was 52/39. Now: 37/51.
A good debate could work wonders. She does have it in her, as our now expectations-raising media eagerly reminds us this morning.

She needs to DESTROY Biden in this debate for the country to turn. She can’t just hold her own. It has to be so obvious who the winner is, otherwise, the country will continue to turn on her.

Is the wideo working? Not showing here, but then it could be my PC.

Please quit saying that being a member of the PTA is one of her qualifications to be president.
Mark1971 on October 1, 2008 at 12:44 PM
Why should voters be confindent on Sarah Palin?
Because she’s NO JOE BIDEN, that’s why
originalpechanga on October 1, 2008 at 12:44 PM
A good performance means zip. The MSM is calling in all chits this year. They are going out in a blazed of glory; they are intent dragging Obama across the finish line. McCain is toast. The race from here to Nov. 4 is just a dead man walking.
Bruno Strozek on October 1, 2008 at 12:46 PM
Joe Biden will be the laughing stock of the country if its simply a wash.
Biden needs to blow her away to preserve his own reputation.

I think I love this John McCain.
Abby Adams on October 1, 2008 at 12:47 PM

hello!
Why didnt he say…SHE HAS MORE EXPERIENCE THAN OBAMA!!!
becki51758 on October 1, 2008 at 12:49 PM
I hope during the debate she has a chance to call out that shill Ifil, and repeat back to Biden all the things he said about Obama in the primary, especially the part about running on McCains ticket…
hippie_chucker on October 1, 2008 at 12:49 PM
At minimum, the McCain campaign owes it to the voters to do the job the media won’t do.
He needs to go relentlessly negative and expose all of Obama’s associations during this final month.
He also need to demand that Obama’s Harvard and other college records are released and that he explain his lie about his relationship with Ayers.
Michelle Obama’s relationship with Louie Farrakahn needs to be explained as well.
The public has a right to be informed before the vote.

I haven’t been hearing from those so-called “conservatives” lately who were trying to sell everyone on the idea that McCain was a good candidate. He is throwing the election away right before my eyes.
echosyst on October 1, 2008 at 12:49 PM
Palin’s been reduced to a sideshow. Sadly, swing voters are looking at McCain and going with Obama. Palin needs a good performance merely to salvage a national career. How can McCain possibly recover the ground he’s lost in the past three weeks?
BuckeyeSam on October 1, 2008 at 12:50 PM
I’d love Sarah and the McCain camp to point out that if something tragic happened to Joe Biden, it’s Obama that doesn’t have the experience to lead the country.
Canadian Infidel on October 1, 2008 at 12:50 PM
She does have more experience as Obama. Right down to being a member of the PTA vs. being a community organizer.
wise_man on October 1, 2008 at 12:50 PM
than Obama. Not “as”
wise_man on October 1, 2008 at 12:51 PM
When I first heard this I cringed when McCain listed Palins experience to include PTA membership. Then I realized that is the same as being a community organizer.

Contrast this with Mr. “I answered, like, eight questions.”
DrSteve on October 1, 2008 at 12:53 PM
And Kathleen Parker implied although not named in proving Governor Palin is unfit. (And the video isn’t allowing me, at least, to rewind it and copy the direct quote about ‘even conservative writers are questioning her abilities’ part exactly.)

I feel sick about this debate the same way I used to feel sick before the Scotland football team played a match in the World Cup. Trouble is, Scotland usually lost.
Anyone who saw her homecoming speech in Alaska knows she is capable of turning on a barnstorming performance. Please God she can pull it off again. I agree with muyoso – she has to totally destroy Biden. A mediocre tie and it’s curtains.
schiehallion on October 1, 2008 at 12:54 PM
I KNOW that I love this John McCain. This is the John McCain that is the real deal and stops listening to the crap spun by his handlers and reciting the canned lines of incompetent speech writers.
THIS John McCain is the one that we need to see, day in and day out, for the next 35 days.
Damiano on October 1, 2008 at 12:54 PM
She sounds well-qualified UNTIL they mention the PTA. All you have to do to join a PTA is show up. It is about as difficult as ordering pizza.
Don’t mention PTA. She’s a governor and therefore qualified by default for a run at the VP slot.
The Race Card on October 1, 2008 at 12:55 PM
Oh FFS. Can we cut the “OMG SHE’S NOT EXPERIENCED” BS? If you think Barackula is experienced enough, Sarah most certainly is.
But aside from that, the reality is that when the rubber meets the road, nobody really gives a crap about experience. After all, experience is nothing but a proxy measure for possessions of the skills needed to perform the job.
If you can verify in some way that someone possesses the skills necessary to perform a job, you don’t need to care about years of experience.
There have been meta-analytic studies done about different predictors of job performance, and I can tell you that years of experience doesn’t correlate well AT ALL (r=.11 via Schmidt and Hunter in, IIRC, 1998) with job performance.
But aside from that, we have to remember that the President is an executive – a decision maker – so in all probability, the best predictor of job performance for anyone will be how well that persons decision making record fits in with your own values. Someone who makes decisions you like will, from your perspective, be a high performer.
Communications skills, diplomacy, charisma … all great, and all useful, but the bottom line for this job is, was, and always will be DECISIONS. And frankly, from what I know of her, I LIKE Sarah Palins decisions, and so I think Sarah Palin will make a fine VP and a BETTER President.

And they’ll get plenty of help from the conservative media, blogosphere, and whine-o-sphere, which classifies anything other than a quick and crushing first round KO by our candidates as a defeat, while even a mere draw achieved by the Obama ticket is always classified as a resounding victory.
thirteen28 on October 1, 2008 at 1:00 PM
Is there more than one John McCain?
The guy in this video seems serious about winning an election.
There’s some other guy out there that has been pulling stupid stunts, backing down to every challenge, failing to point out his own accomplishments and violating his own beliefs.
The guy in that clip cannot be the same guy that has been railing against earmark spending, shouting from the rooftops that he’ll make the people responsible for them famous and claiming to veto every one that comes across his desk just days before he supports a pork laden senate bill.
Dorvillian on October 1, 2008 at 1:00 PM

Uh, Mac?
When are the two of you going to swing by Indiana? You only have a slight lead here. The Obamalons are registering 18 year old high school students left and right. The Marion County (Indianapolis) Clerk Beth White (Democrat) is using a “Y Vote” Promotion to educate high school students about voting………at the same time registering them to vote.

Richard Romano on October 1, 2008 at 1:08 PM
I agree and disagree. It can kind of sound lame. But it is as important as being a community organizer.
I’ve been on PTA boards, and it is a full-time, high pressure gig that I did for free. Less than free- I donated my own money to the cause and the running of the organization. All of our efforts directly helped the children and teachers of our school.

a good job by Mac. He made a great choice in Sarah Palin, she is worth fighting for.
james23 on October 1, 2008 at 1:12 PM
Is it just me, or are the defeatists alive & well on this thread?
If you’re a true-blue McCain?Palin voter . . . well, there are ebbs and flows in a campaign. Seems to me McCain is starting to gear up for a fight, which is probably the best time to do so . . . 30 days or so before the election. He’s seen how the gaffes and problems with The One have pretty much bounced off him prior, and figures it’s because people weren’t paying too much attention. Now that they are, it’s time for the gloves to come off. Timing is everything in elections.
For you Obamatrons trying to inject fear and depression, well, there isn’t too much to say. You are in the tank for The One, along with your media accomplices, and there is no “hope and change” for you.

What to expect from the Biden-Palin VP Debate
BDU-33 on October 1, 2008 at 1:14 PM
It seems to me that several different processes are at work here:
1 – incessant mass media attacks have to have consequences and we’re seeing those first in the cries of victory over Sarah from the left and to a lesser degree in the polls.
However, the mass media picture is unreal – and everywhere she goes she meets real people who go away knowing this and go out and tell their friends to ignore the media hype.
2 – I think we’re being hustled on the vice presidential debates – by both sides.
On the left, the goal seems to be to turn the debates into some kind of oral examination for the role of president – not, in other words, a debate at all but merely a hostile forum to show that she doesn’t meet their expectations on glibness and the ability to articulate nothing.
On McCain’s side, I rather think she’s a lot better than they’re really letting on – and I hope to see this verified in the “debate.” If I’m right, expect her to take on the “moderator” more than Joe Biden; to make human and family values the focus where-ever possible; and to offer a few real zingers about Joe et al’s non role in cleaning up the current financial crisis.
3) even a lot of the people who are sympathetic are, I think, interpreting her positions on some issues only in the light of their own (pampered) experience.
On the business of Alaska being adjacent to Russia, for example, most people are either trying to get others to laugh at her over this or sadly tut-tutting about how naive she is on this subject.
If you’ve ever been in the front lines of any serious conflict, however, you’ll know better. For a very long time in both my lifetime and hers, that was The Enemy, just on the horizon -over there – and when you live with the certainty that you’re first in the line of fire should an attack happen, you get a little conscious of how trivial a distance 20, or a hundred, miles really is. Know what the (DEW) warning window was at Elmsdorf circa 1975? less than four minutes.
4 – oh, yeah, and speaking personally? I was hoping for Newt as VP, but I’d use her S* for toothpaste any day of the week – and as another comment writer said here just recently (sorry, can’t find the link) I don’t care if she’s not an expert on X-istan or where Jefferson keeps his cash these days – I care that she’s got her head on straight, that she’s a real person, with real concerns, who’s raised a real family and succeeded in real jobs.
Paul Murphy on October 1, 2008 at 1:16 PM
I want to see THIS McCain in the campaign trail and in interviews. I see him so passionless sometimes, but when it comes to Palin, he’s fired up.
McCain should be this way often.
jencab on October 1, 2008 at 1:17 PM
*McCain/Palin . . . sheesh!
Something else I neglected to say . . .
I was working the GOP phone banks last night from absentee voter ballot rolls. The voters were from all parties. I was calling the Ft Lauderdale area, which you would think is a very prop-Obama area.
I know this is not at all scientific, and I only talked to 20 actual people. However, all but one is voting for McCain/Palin . . . to be honest, they mentioned Palin before McCain as the reason to vote for the ticket.
One elderly lady said, “I LOVE Sarah. We girls have to stick together!”
I had to laugh.

Mark1971 on October 1, 2008 at 1:30 PM
After rejecting the premise and stating his case, McCain should have responded to the third or fourth “Palin isn’t experienced enough” question by asking the simple question: “In your opinion, what is Obama’s experience for President?” This should be asked every time the Palin experience issue is brought up. There is no answer that does not show Obama’s weaknes to Palin (the VP candidate). I have not heard one yet. Obama’s answer: I ran a good campaign and I was a community organizer.
jerseyman on October 1, 2008 at 1:32 PM
You’re right. They’re always in the Tank for the Dems, but this year they’ve gone completely berserk.
Time is running stories about how conservative Republicans stopped the “bailout” so only they can revive it; only Repubs are to blame, and no mention of the Demo majority in the House. Of course, when a bill is passed, it will be pronounced “GOOD” and all the credit will go to the Dems and Obama
The media have gone from Very Bad to Even Worse–and I repeat my approval of having members of the media hunted for Sport. You can have Catch & Release if you’re non-violent…..
Janos Hunyadi on October 1, 2008 at 1:32 PM
…good for John! It’s nice to see a bit of scrappiness — especially in the face of that flat, condescending voice of the “interviewer”, who’s trying to turn an interview into a provocation — and see him lay out the facts…genuinely.
Once again, the whole “rise above it” and “appear presidential” ambition misses the point: the people don’t want style…they want substance. Obama has style. He has buckets full of style. The fact that he’s a front escapes no one except his worshipful acolytes.
Mr. McCain needs to remember the whole Sean Connery encapsulation of Mr. Obama’s background. You win an election against this dirty Chicago poll by remembering that if your opponent pulls a knife, you pull a gun…if he sends one of yours to the hospital, you send one of his to the morgue (metaphorically)….
…this is serious…deadly serious…folks are trying to palm off a smiling totalitarian on us, giving an incipient fascist the levers and knobs of power. That is serious.
You go, John…as Bedford Forrest said, “keep up the skeer!”….
Puritan1648 on October 1, 2008 at 1:33 PM
Why?? It may not belong at the top of a resume, but being part of the PTA is more than 90% of parents do to be involved in the education of their children. Getting involved shows leadership, and is rare. Just look at the apathy of the masses in this country and you will see just how rare it is for someone to get involved in even the most simple of things…
virology76 on October 1, 2008 at 1:34 PM

I really wish THIS was the McCain we could all see everyday.
The more I see him like this, the more I respect him. I may not agree with all his viewpoint all the time, or even often enough to want to vote for POTUS, but just based on the character I’ve seen displayed, he’s the choice in this election bcs he actually HAS good character.
Obama has no redeeming character qualities or even those of a leader.
PLEASE McCain! Talk straight for the rest of this election!
Badger40 on October 1, 2008 at 1:35 PM
Moments like these make me want to like McCain as a potential president, but after claiming that the Treasury has a billion dollars to sink into the CRA securities without even having a bailout bill passed, it’s just not possible. I’ll still vote for him based on his running mate, but damn he makes it sting. Like putting a little lemon juice on a cut before he applies the band-aid.

He seemed relaxed and comfortable with his position, confident enough to tell the interviewer in no uncertain terms – without the Hollywood tooth polishing smile – that he disagreed with various premises.
