Shelter cancels event with “comedian” who wished rape on Palin

Three cheers for the women’s shelter Rosie’s Place.  After comedian Sandra Bernhard openly suggested that Palin get gang raped while visiting New York City, the shelter decided that Bernhard’s sense of political action was not appropriate for women who have actually been raped and beaten:

The shelter’s public relations director, Leemarie Mosca, said many women at the shelter have been victims of violence — and violence against women is not a laughing matter.

Bernhard made the comments during her one-woman show in Washington D.C. last month before Palin campaigned in New York. Bernhard said Palin would be “gang-raped by my big black brothers” during a diatribe in which she also criticized Palin for opposing abortion rights.

Often in this campaign, and really over the last ten years, we’ve often wondered where real feminists went after ugly eruptions like Bernhard’s.  The idea that a supposed feminist would legitimize rape as a political weapon is so disgusting that a more naïve observer would expect a torrent of outrage from Bernhard’s fellow feminists in response.  Instead, their silence stands as an indictment of them as feminists, and as human beings.

Whoever Rosie’s Place finds to replace Bernhard will be an upgrade.  They have nowhere to go but up.  Their stand challenges others who profess to stand for the advancement of women to publicly rebuke Bernhard.  Where exactly is Gloria Steinem these days?

I would assume she is off somewhere making the same type of crude comments about Gov. Palin as Berhnhard.

Blake on October 1, 2008 at 6:05 PM

Instead, their silence stands as an indictment of them as feminists, and as human beings.

Feminism died when they backed Bill Clinton instead of Paula Jones.

Much like the modern Democrat party, they are no longer interested in further their ideals, they are solely interested in keeping power.

Is rape funny in leftist elite circles?

Governor Palin.

Well alrighty then. Polite golf claps for Rosie’s Place.

Still, as others have pointed out, what’s-her-name need not fear losing work.

If god forbid Obama wins, this harridan will be feted at the WH before long and prolly be named Madame O’s Chief of Staff.

When I was married to my ex-husband, I would sometimes fantasize about having an “if the situation were reversed” machine so I could show him how unreasonable and irrational he was….that could come in real handy in our present political climate as well.

Time for me to move on to another thread.

Religious_Zealot on October 1, 2008 at 6:15 PM

Sorry, but anyone who would ever consider inviting Sanda Bernhard to anything, is an idiot.

Rosie’s Place can’t cure their stupidity by dis-inviting her.

Nawwww, here’s a quote for you from Gloria, who is a nut but had some good quotes.

If women are supposed to be less rational and more emotional at the beginning of our menstrual cycle when the female hormone is at its lowest level, then why isn’t it logical to say that, in those few days, women behave the most like the way men behave all month long?

Liberals forget that these shelters depend more on conservative dollars then liberal dollars. It is the conservatives that raise the money for charities at a 3:1 ratio.
Given a choice, between a group of liberals supporting your cause, or conservatives supporting your cause, they would choose conservatives.

Wade on October 1, 2008 at 6:28 PM

Southern gent: I’m not sure it would be worth the trip to jail because you KNOW she would press charges. I have a better scenario: Do a sequel to the movie in which she plays a psycho-fan of Jerry Lewis in The King of Comedy and make HER the target of some overly ‘amorous’ fan. The best part would be when the gag went into her mouth, so we wouldn’t have to hear the verbal filth as it spewed from her ugly mouth.
…”she also criticized Palin for opposing abortion rights”. Never mind that she doesn’t believe in jail time for those women who abort even viable babies. If I were Sarah I would say that I’m against tax dollars being spent on abortions, especially late term abortions. We are all responsible for this tragedy if we help pay for it.

Christine on October 1, 2008 at 6:30 PM

The idea that a supposed feminist would legitimize rape as a political weapon is so disgusting that a more naive observer would expect a torrent of outrage from Bernhard’s fellow feminists in response. Instead, their silence stands as an indictment of them as feminists, and as human beings.

Silence? Deja vu, their silence after BJ’s getting his Lewinsky came to light.

It also shows they subordinate their feminism, such as it is, to their partisanship. Their gender ‘issues’ are asserted more for political expediency than to express authentic grievance. In other words, it exposes them as PHONIES. Phony feminism.

I’m in the Boston area (Cape Cod, exactly. Lovely place, please come visit and bring your tourist $$$) and was listening to a local talk show host, sometimes NR contributor, Imus guest, Michael Graham who takes the lemons and turns them into lemonade. Take a minute…

turfmann on October 1, 2008 at 6:37 PM

It is refreshing that an organization which deal with rape would be acquainted with the abject horror of rape to such an extent that joking about it would be out of bounds full stop.

There’s a big difference between these type of “people on the ground” and the fatcat NARAL/NOW types for whom anything is fair game in destroying Palin in the name of preserving their high holy sacrament of abortion on demand.

zmrzlina on October 1, 2008 at 6:38 PM

Bernhard lost her mind after Madonna dumped her as her bff. This whole episode only adds to that. What I don’t get is how Bernard can make a violently racist comment about black men gang raping a white woman and get a pass on that.

grdred944 on October 1, 2008 at 6:50 PM

Yes but any “comedian” who suggested that Michelle Obama should be “gang raped by my big white brothers” would probably be in jail–First Amendment or no First Amendment.

thuja on October 1, 2008 at 6:51 PM

Sandra B. is by far is not funny and Rosie’s Place made the right decision.

right2bright on October 1, 2008 at 6:24 PM

right2bright, you are making a logic error and should be more careful. The 3:1 ratio is for overall charity and not for a particular subcategory like battered women shelters. My experience is that liberal women do give generously to this particular cause. It’s admittedly anecdotal experience, but it seems consistent with the values that they express.

Also, since you didn’t source the 3:1 ratio, I don’t know how accurate it really is. In particular are religious contributions counted among the charity giving. Someone running a non-religious cause like a battered woman shelter is not going to be impressed by charity money going to a wealthy mega-church pastor.

Sandra also plays the race card by implying that Governor Palin would have had an abortion if the child were half black.

How ’bout some respect for mongrels, if you please?

oldleprechaun on October 1, 2008 at 7:38 PM

Only in America where Sandra Bernhard, Chevy Chase and Al Franken could be considered “funny”.

Loudness and obsenities do not equate humor. :)

poxoma on October 1, 2008 at 7:43 PM

I can’t abide “comedians” like Bernhard, silverman, and K. Griffin. They are not funny just hateful.

Flint Stone on October 1, 2008 at 7:43 PM

I went to their website. They are a totally private group, no state or federal funds. I donated on line to them.

Good for them, honestly! Someone with a sense of right and wrong, hell, someone with some commonsense!

I doubt those “big black” guys in NYC consider her their sister. That situation exists only in her mind.

Sandra Bernhard–what are the odds that America’s unfunniest comedian could also be America’s homeliest woman?

radjah shelduck on October 1, 2008 at 8:37 PM

One more reason to laud Rosie’s place- from their website.

Rosie’s Place accepts no government funds, and relies instead on committed volunteers and private supporters to accomplish its effective and innovative work.

This seems to be a charity worth supporting.

There’s this thing above all the comments, it’s called “the post.” If you read that, it will help.

Note: gig mostly =’s job.

Also note: It is possible that Hardbern was doing this gratis for charity (don’t care enough to read more about the harridan), in which case “job” wouldn’t be the right word.

Merovign on October 1, 2008 at 10:13 PM

Donate to Rosie’s Place here. There’s even a handy comment box so you can tell them why you’re supporting them. I bet they get a big boost in contributions over this.

In the entire history of the Jewish people going back to the Pyramids, this is the first time three things happened. Someone (Bernhard) called for a violent attack on an elected public figure in a country where there was no persecution; the Jewish audience laughed and no one got up to protest; and the sponsor, the DC Jewish Community Centre, let her continue her engagement for another week as if nothing had happened. I’m glad I live in Israel so I don’t have to associate with degenerates like that.

Bernhard made the comments during her one-woman show…

Is that the number of people who showed up?

Sandra Bernhard is about as foul-mouthed as can be. She puts the men to shame. Rosies Place did the right thing.

Bernhard does comedy? Since when? And when did she get mauled in the face by dogs? The surgeons have done a bad job repairing her face.
