Open thread: Senate bailoutmania! Update: Bailout passes, 75-24

The vote’s set for 7:30 ET on C-SPAN, assuming the windbaggery on the floor is finished by then. It should pass with 70+ votes, three of which will come from McCain, Obama, and Biden. Will it pass the House on Friday? All signs point to … no:
House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said Wednesday he was “personally disappointed” that the Senate added a package of tax breaks to the bailout bill.
However, Hoyer said he had spoken to House Minority Whip Roy Blunt “four or five” times on Wednesday and expressed hope that they could come to an agreement on the bill.
Tapper delved into this a bit further earlier today:
While the Senate will pass its version of the rescue bill with more than 70 votes, according to Senate sources, Senators have taken the partisan bickering over the rescue bill and added a stalled disagreement over a separate issue — “tax extenders,” or extending various tax relief provisions that are due to expire — into the mix…
But some conservative Democrats have expressed serious concerns about the fact that extending these tax cuts is not being paid for in the budget. Adding the provision may attract House Republicans, but it could alienate these fiscally-conscious Democrats, causing them to abandon the 140 House Democrats who voted for the bill to join the 95 who voted against it…
The implication: not only will Boehner need to provide the entire 13-vote margin that the bill lost by on Monday, but also that the addition of the unpaid-for “tax extenders” could cause up to 17 Democrats who voted for the bill Monday to walk. If not more.
Will the Senate bill clear the House? Will the economy be rescued? Will your humble correspondent succeed in his reckless gambit to hold onto his retirement portfolio until the bailout passes and the market spikes, whereupon he’ll duly unload his shares before the S&P inevitably tanks? Tune in tonight for episode one!
Update: The bailout clears its first hurdle, 75-24, and an anxious blogger lowers the revolver pressed to his temple. Tomorrow night: Russian roulette, as Palin takes the stage against Biden and the House tries to choke down this fat, greasy piece of pork. If it doesn’t? Expect Pelosi to come back with a third iteration of the bill even less palatable to conservatives than this one was. Something’s going to pass soon; we might as well get the best deal we can.
Check here soon for the roll of glory reluctance!

Not yet, the Senate is pressuring the House to sign on to their bill BUT any of this tax stuff has to start with the House. Now is the time to badger your Congressman like his/her job is on the line. Which, of course, it is in 33 days.

How about this for the name of this thing:
H. R. 1424 As Amended; Paul Wellstone Mental Health and Addiction Equity Act of 2007
I’m sure you all recognize this as the bailout bill…

I agree with you on that. Almost impossible. The irony is that the Democrats have more of a hand in this then do the Republicans.

No, that is not all this is about. This is about keeping the overnight lending that businesses have to do to operate working. This is about keeping everyday ordinary businesses functioning and meeting payroll. The problem is some people just refuse to believe that and the only way to prove it to them is to let the whole damn economy fall into a steep decline.

Voting for this undermines the very essence of McCain’s campaign. It will be used against him.
nyrofan on October 1, 2008 at 10:13 PM
Not true. The free market could solve this with no cost to us and without socializing our finances. The strong will replace the weak and the transition will be less painless than this bailout will be.
csdeven on October 1, 2008 at 10:13 PM
Excellent point. Behind, no pun intended, closed doors Tarp is affectionately known as the Treasury Ass Rape Program.
patrick neid on October 1, 2008 at 10:13 PM
Yea, I’ll grant that that’s true.
But I think these cries of “coup d’ tat” and “shredded constitution/ USSA ” are outlandish.
silverfox on October 1, 2008 at 10:13 PM
No one knows if this will fix the problem. Some people say it’ll make things worse.
Yep, I don’t agree with the notion that we must do something (!!) or something (!!!!!) might happen.
Pelosi already said there will be no investigations into Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. So good luck with that. They aren’t fixing the problem; so this is gonna happen again. And it’ll be worse the second time around.
Have you not been reading what I’ve been saying for over a week?

Fletch54 on October 1, 2008 at 10:15 PM
Does it matter which banks do the lending?
No it doesn’t. When the poorly run banks fail, strong ones replace them and they start lending money immediately.
The socialism you are praying for will destroy the free market and this country’s future status as a world power.

That is crazy. They are holding their breath to see if it really happens. Believe it or not freedom has nothing to do with it.
Terrye on October 1, 2008 at 10:16 PM
Forgiven…………… speaking of Congress, I don’t think the MSM is having the effect that they think they have, especially after watching the love fest between Reid and Dodd.
It’s almost like a town full of women who have been raped by the same two guys, watching as their attackers stand in front of a camera, slapping each other on the back for what a good job they are doing……………………….
…………… yeah, I think when this thing hits the House, and the American people have a look at what exactly these political hacks have tried to hide in this abomination, Reid and Dodd will be hiding behind Pelosi.
Every day that passes and our total economy does not collapse is a bad one for the Democrats. The majority of us get up and go to work……….. you want to buy a car or a house, call your local bank, they got money. Just try it…… go to any ATM machine on any corner and take out a few bucks……. all is good, this is all a political sham. If not, the Democrats have the votes in the House and Senate, pass your friggin bill if you have the balls/
The only people in trouble here are the Democrats that prompt up a Government program, backed it by Federal legislation that forced banks to lend money to people who could not prove that they could pay it back or were even legal citizens, and in turn funded their political agendas……….. let them fail. Bring those responsible to light, and put them in a cold dark jail cell for a very, very, very long time.
Seven Percent Solution on October 1, 2008 at 10:16 PM
Yeah it is. So is the talk of apocalypse on the pro-bailout side. There is no apocalypse.
But this is the first step to socialism, like it or not. Due to this, it’ll be harder to say “no” next time.
The moral hazard has been removed.
Also with Reid’s inclusion of the mental health thing, we’ll have health insurance companies going belly up in a few years.
And since they aren’t going to fix or even investigate the causes, this is gonna happen again in a few years.
Welcome to the future. It’s grim.

And by the way, the only way to get the market to work is to bring the government into it. That is just a fact. Otherwise, we face capitalism with capital.
And there is no one who can change those rules and regs but government. There is no one who can raise the FDIC insurance but government. There is no one who can investigate Fannie and Freddie and a lot of these other thieves, liars and crooks, but government. That is not socialism, that is their job.
Do you really believe the stuff you say, or do you just work at extremem and frightening cluelessness?
On another note, it doesn’t matter what way we turn right now: with the Terrye’s of the world, I do believe we are screwed either way in November. It’s just a matter of Slower (McCain) or Obama(faster)

jukin on October 1, 2008 at 10:17 PM
That’s always been the choice. Slowly or quickly. Neither party wants the free market any longer. People want guarantees in life. Spreading misery is the only way to do it.
lorien1973 on October 1, 2008 at 10:18 PM
Don’t worry folks.
The House of Representatives will kill this bill again, either in committee or by vote. Representatives serve two year terms and are far more susceptible to public pressure than the Senate aristocracy.

I don’t think you know what you are talking about.
I am not just talking about banks closing. I am talking about credit drying up overnight. That is what is happening. It is not about banks buying banks. In Europe interest shot up 11% just like that.
In the US businesses that have to buy inventory and stock it are starting to have trouble finding money anywhere. That is what overnight lending is. These are the kinds of loans businesses need to operate on a day to day business. If it all about large banks eating small ones no one would give a damn. That has been happening for years.

lorien1973 on October 1, 2008 at 10:21 PM
For those talking about buying guns and ammunition, last weekend I dropped a deer rifle off at my gun shop for a repair and the place was packed. It is a small store, certainly not a hangout. In the past I’ve never seen more than 2-3 other customers. But Saturday there were actual lines to see and handle weapons and buy ammunition. Some were buying more than one gun and they were running low on inventory. After studying the crowd, I asked rather loudly if anyone was an Obama voter. I would be banned if I posted their responses.
Folks are fighting mad! They want to save this country. I just hope their anger didn’t come too late.

Fletch54 on October 1, 2008 at 10:24 PM
Actually, that is the problem. I’ve observed it first hand. Banks have all of a sudden gotten really squirrelly about lending money. My business is doing fine, but like most small businesses, I rely on bank loans to grow it. It looks like for the next year, rather than growing I will need to conserve cash.

If the future is grim… we have been in the future for quite a while now.
I like this post.
We need to remember that government has a healthy role to play in capitalism. For example, the trucking industry is mostly private sector, but the interstate highway system is definitely not.
And when truckers fall asleep and kill people, government has to step in and require sleep logs.
And when bridges fail and people die, the public needs to realize they have not been keeping the government on the ball (we are the bosses –really– and we are all to blame ultimately), and money has to be spent to bring bridges up to par.

I am so disgusted now I don’t know if I’ll even bother. Better to sit at home and play with the Rocket Widgets from my empty Guinness cans…
