Er, not exactly. Mortgage-Backed Securities are a vital part of the secondary market. Freddie and Fannie buy mortgages from lenders, who then use the cash to make more loans.

Fannie and Freddie in their turn pool a bunch of loans into an MBS which they ’sell’ to investors, thus replenishing their cash pool. If they didn’t sell MBSs, they’d be sitting on a zillion dollars worth of mortgages… and waiting as long as 30 years to see them paid off.

Selling an MBS brings cash to the secondary market, which then buys more loans from lenders. It’s not a bug, Ed, it’s the feature.

No wonder Barry O has a hard time answering the question, “What does a Community Organizer do?”  I suspect answering, “use intimidation and fraud to create a financial disaster for the nation” may not be the best campaign stum…

IMO this was the real rush to get the bill passed–the Dems didn’t want people poking into the reasons why.
