Palin talks gays, feminism, abortion, and evolution with Couric; Update: Video added

posted at 8:33 pm on September 30, 2008 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

I waited an hour for CBS to post the video. No luck. I’m uploading my own cut so stand by for that; when their version goes up, I’ll swap it in. In the meantime, here’s the transcript. Remember, the rap on Palin is that she’s supposedly a “Christianist” nut ready to impose theocracy at the first opportunity. Here we learn that she supports contraception; doesn’t want to punish abortion with jail time; supports teaching evolution as “an accepted principle” and may very well oppose teaching creationism (it’s ambiguous); and reaffirms that she doesn’t judge gays, partly because she’s had a close friend who’s gay for decades.

And yet. Read through it and tell me what the media will lead with tomorrow. Here’s a hint: It has nothing to do with her policy answers.

Update: Here’s the vid.

It’s not about the money. People that do this for “Obama” are of the same breed as any other college “activist”: from a higher-middle-income family and don’t need to try and get a job that pays a living salary.

They have the luxury to go and “intern” for Obama by spamming sites that criticize him. Or bias web polling. Or what-have-you. Money is no object — “it’s the issues, man!!!!”

Yeah, the librarian thing…we HAVE to get to the bottom of that.

By the way, does thinking critically ever make your head hurt?

jimmy the notable on September 30, 2008 at 10:41 PM

asking the librarian if they would be willing to remove books that people might find offensive.

Here’s my bet. There was a big push to review items like “terrorists cookbook”, how to make explosives, etc on public library shelves by homeland security. That would be my bet. but, we aren’t going to hear anything because Palin didn’t do it and no Obama leaning press or librarian is going to actually explain it because the average American would probably go “yeah, maybe not a bad idea”.

First, thanks for posting at HotAir. I don’t know any PUMAs personally so I find it really helpful to hear from some of you on this site.
Can you tell us how Obama’s “truth squads” are playing with the PUMAs that you know? Also, how did Obama’s performance during the debate on national security play with PUMAs? My impression based on the other web sites where PUMAs post is that Obama’s Chicago-style dirty political tactics and his lack of experience/qualifications on defense are two of the main objections PUMAs have to him. Is this true?
How many PUMAs do you think will vote for Obama?
Thanks!

I stand by my statement about muyoso. And if he is a /b/-tard, then I hope someone chops his legs off and beats him with the bloody end of them.

/b/-tards were responsible for hacking into Palin’s e-mail.

I detest b-tards as much as the next newfag, but to be fair to those scourges of the internet, only one b-tard “hacked” into her email. And not to defend a b-tard but deciphering a Yahoo Mail “Security Question” answer is not exactly hacking.

I haven’t watch the video with Katie but I did hear the Hugh Hewitt interview. After he talked to Jim Gerraity, I hope I spelled that correctly, and the longer the interview went on the better pleased he was with Gov. Palin and her answers. She is extremely likable and I think she’s a pretty smart cookie. I agree she should have been on more shows. Oh well, like the old saying goes, hindsight is 20/20. I wonder if Allah will ever tell us what he thought the big criticism would be?

Cindy Munford on September 30, 2008 at 10:42 PM

No answer my questions about why you support McCain? Is it seriously because there is some female reproductive organs on the ticket alone?

muyoso on September 30, 2008 at 10:37 PM

McCain is a fine American, and — to me — a good Moderate voice. He doesn’t brow-beat upon social issues, and neither does Sarah Palin. They are focused on strong work ethic, service, and doing what is right for the American economy.

Like Bill Clinton said — and paraphrased — I may agree with one candidate on 80% of what he says, but if he delivers on only %20 of that, what’s to stop me from supporting the candidate who I agree with %50 of the time and yet can deliver on all 50% of that?

Me supporting McCain is not the issue here. Your bold-faced lying about being a “concerned former Palin LOVER!” is the issue.

You said you supported Palin.

I have seen no evidence of this. Instead you turn and make it an ad-hominem upon me putting country first — and on me as a gay, liberal, ex-Democrat.

Funny, that.

40% of American don’t pay any taxes. How do you get 90%? All Obama is offering is a 500$ tax credit for singles and $1000 credit for families. That will be quickly erased as businesses raise prices to keep up with the massive tax burden Obama will lay on them. In essence, a tax hike for the middle class.

On the morning after pill…she said that she thought life started at the moment of conception, thus she didn’t personally agree with the use of the morning after pill.

Doesn’t the morning after pill simply prevent ovulation? It doesn’t end a life…if conception already took place, the pill is useless, unless I’m missing something.

Heh. Thanks, Y. You should just read some PUMA sites. The Confluence, Alegre’s Corner, No Quarter, Sugar n’ Spice, and the PUMAPac blog are good building blocks.

As far as your questions, and mind, one PUMA such as myself is not indicative of all:

- The “Obama Truth Squad” is seen, by and large, as a bunch of BS spinning in his favor. PUMAs like to talk Alinsky, Rezko, and the milieu.

- Obama has no national security experience. So his positions on that — which are inconsistent with his other ones — just feed that sense.

- Yes, the “Chicago Machine” and thuggery is a big part of PUMA contention. PUMAs have been working diligently on documentaries pointing out Caucus Fraud from team O. There are some preview trailers online for them.

- No PUMA by self-identification should vote Obama. Most won’t. PUMA shouldn’t be confused with “a Hillary voter.” Whether or not PUMAs vote McCain-Palin — as I will — is a different story.

Hope that helps. But check some of the PUMA sites out. If you haaaaate Hillary Clinton, then it might not be for you. But if you’re interested in putting Country First, then it’s worth a read. Most PUMAs are of that same mindset.

Not just picking on you….well, maybe I am.

Look. Sarah Palin is the governor of a sovereign state. She’s not a blonde bimbo. Her parents were schoolteachers. She’s educated, witty and good-looking besides. She’s a mother with 5 children, has been a businessman, entrepreneur, one-man woman, hunter, fisherman….

She isn’t what you want to paint her as. She’s an executive. Oh, and by the way, with as long and dark a winter as they have in Alaska, I can guarantee you that they read everything that is surrounding them and more than once. She certainly knew enough to quote Abraham Lincoln. Can you?

Tennman on September 30, 2008 at 10:52 PM

She did a fine job — Couric came off as a petulant child, “Mommy Mommy, you promised to make brownies” “You are going to make brownies, right? “Mom? Brownies?” “Those sugary brown square things?” “Mom?”

Gov. Palin answered forthrightly and without reservation — the rubbish about the newspapers is another pathetic “gotcha” moment…and Gov. Palin wasn’t going to play.

If you really were a good Republican who supported Republicans but were “concerned” about Palin being some dumb hick to drag the ticket down, you wouldn’t be questioning my vote.

Would you prefer I said I love Barack Obama and realize he will bring “real change?” This argument — “Why support McCain if you supported Hillary?!” — is one I hear often… from Obama-supporting Democrats.

Astroturfing. I hope that $7/hr paid to you from Obama for America buys you a nice McChicken sandwich and a soda on the way home from “work.”

But your “concern” is noted. Show me one instance of you supporting Palin at any stage of this cycle. One. I’m waiting.

Until then:

Palin is playing the left like a fiddle.

She should have answered the newspaper question?

Bah!

The liberals are squawking about how she can’t read!

Palin is a lot smarter than I’ve allowed myself to give her credit for. Man, she can be shrewd.

Saltysam on September 30, 2008 at 10:56 PM

So Palin refused to be baited into naming a news source that could be used to create the next big scandal about her views, then she refused to declare support of opposition to the morning after pill and to homosexuality; and for that she is being judged to be what, stupid? Does anyone think any specific answer to those questions would have made Katie suddenly become a Sara fan? The questions were selected because any response would lead to the next attack.

And by the way, what is wrong with Katie’s mouth in the scene where she is pressing the morning after pill question? She looks like she just bit a lemon.

And yet I don’t share your views on this being some kind of big mistake.

ALL politicians ignore questions they don’t want to answer or think are ‘gotcha questions.’

Personally, I think the question was stupid and not worth answering. The newspapers and magazines we read do not really shape our worldview. Our upbringing, life experiences and faith shape our worldview much more than any print media.

And Gov. Palin suspected a dig at her “backwoods” upbringing and decided to pre-empt it.

And it worked because Katie backed down and moved on.

I’ve been to http://www.puma08.com/ and a couple of the sites you listed, but I also see PUMAs posting at Ann Althouse, Erin Brockovich, neoneocon, and some other blogs that have more open dialog between conservatives, centrists, and open-minded liberals.

Let me just say, I have SERIOUS doubts that a majority of people who are undecided will see it the same way as you. It doesnt matter what you or I think, I am voting for McCain no matter what. She could literally just drool and make guttural noises at the debate, and I am still voting for McCain because of certain key issues, such as I don’t want to live in a communist country. She has to impress independents, and liberals who aren’t really really liberal. Not answering a question like that, it will be played on radio shows all over the country tomorrow, and the common theme will be “what a dummy”. It will be played on radio shows like Howard Stern, where a majority of the people listening probably arent too politically savvy, and they will form very negative opinions of her. That is what comes from not answering a question like that.

muyoso on September 30, 2008 at 11:07 PM

We’ll be fine, but damn! A PBS obambi book author and enthusiast picked as debate monitor. Wonder why there’s NEVER a conservative that gets to do one of those things?

Crap you guys, get..a..grip. PBS is government funded. It’ll have to be fair.

Palin should have answered that she used to get her news from yahoo.news, then refuse to name a specific source for security reasons.

Honestly, if this is what the media is spinning, they are desperate. Nevertheless, I’d go ahead and release something from the Governor’s office explaining about the daily news briefings that I’m sure her staff assembles for her.

The morning after pill is an “abortifacient.” It works by making the uterus inhospitable to a fertilized egg, such that implantation will not occur. If you believe that life begins at conception, then a pill that prevents that life from growing and developing is an “abortion pill.”

Undecided independents are more likely to be swayed about how her religious views differ from how she thinks government should be run (i.e. gay rights, creationism and birth control).

Religious_Zealot on September 30, 2008 at 11:11 PM

What specifically are you pointing out – the lead story on that page of the debate “moderator” who is in the tank for Obama?

wise_man on September 30, 2008 at 10:36 PM

Yes, exactly.

If you take a look at the post you will see that she has gone so far as to write a book about the glory of Obama.

The media is trying, and largely succeeding in destroying this campaign. No one in the McCain campaign or the RNC seems to think that blatant, ever worsening media bias is a problem.

It’s a serious problem. Action is required.

Dorvillian on September 30, 2008 at 11:12 PM

All I can say is @%*# Couric for her arrogant, condescending drilling of Palin… a drilling that she would not dare burden the holy one, the golden child, the light incarnate, with… all she wants to know is how he feels about the grass between his toes or such fluff…

I believe it was Bernard Goldberg (correct me if I’m wrong) who made the point that it is actually the elite who think that they are the majority and it is us little folk with our anger, guns and God who are fringe….

It’s so damn irritating to see them give a pass to those who are christened… and almost sportingly jibe those they deem as beneath themselves…. Smote their minds, Lord with confusion… truly use the simple to confound the “wise”….

Exactly.

She might say she’s for popular referenda on gay rights, but as long as Palin has never pushed her pen or tried to ban my existence, then it’s par for the course as far as any large-scale Dem politician.

I’m tired of being pandered to, and taken advantage of, by the left on “gay rights.” In my view, Republicans like McCain and Palin are absolutely, 100% on my side, even if they have personal beliefs that differ from mine.

Much more so than Democrats like Obama and Biden who talk a talk but don’t walk the walk regarding these social issues.

However on reddit.com and digg.com, I defend Palin and McCain, because the sites are very liberal. I expect your apology to be contrite and heartfelt.

But if you really want to know what threw me over the edge take a look at this.

It takes a former KGB agent to make the connection between the actions of the media and the messages coming from the Obama campaign. This clip is from 1985 but it sounds like he taped yesterday afternoon.

It’s time to stop laughing about the media bias, it’s there for a reason.

To me, I wish a woman would never choose that. But as a Christian, I can’t start judging one way or the other once they would have. That’s Gods business.
