Palin talks gays, feminism, abortion, and evolution with Couric; Update: Video added

I waited an hour for CBS to post the video. No luck. I’m uploading my own cut so stand by for that; when their version goes up, I’ll swap it in. In the meantime, here’s the transcript. Remember, the rap on Palin is that she’s supposedly a “Christianist” nut ready to impose theocracy at the first opportunity. Here we learn that she supports contraception; doesn’t want to punish abortion with jail time; supports teaching evolution as “an accepted principle” and may very well oppose teaching creationism (it’s ambiguous); and reaffirms that she doesn’t judge gays, partly because she’s had a close friend who’s gay for decades.
And yet. Read through it and tell me what the media will lead with tomorrow. Here’s a hint: It has nothing to do with her policy answers.
Update: Here’s the vid.

…she was on national television. It was important.
Maybe, she’s human enough to have been flustered? Humans get flustered, you know.
Maybe she doesn’t rise to the level of omniscient comicbook superheroine — were she to do so, and throw x-ray vision and flight into the bargain, I’m sure you’d still not vote for her — but I can see a person when I look at her.
…I can’t say the same for Obama. I look at him, I see someone who might be able to ask your all-important question…and then play footsy with the Constitution for four dark years….

Please, Palin would have had to tick off three dozen publications just to keep from getting the “My GOD, she doesn’t read Newsweek or Forbes or the Gay Pride Weekly!”

I do not blame her one bit for not naming what newspaper she reads or magazine. I can remember almost that exact same question being tossed at Reagan way back when and he dodged it also.
LOL I read the comments here first before watching the video clip you guys are way out of bounds and fretting too much take a deep breath. She did fine in the interview.

Darn right I am. Even if I commented on a “liberal State blog.” What part of PUMA do you not understand?
And don’t deflect my charge. Show me this “enthusiastic Palin support.” I’ve seen nothing from your comments over multiple threads other than your own special brand of P.D.S.
Your “concern” is noted. Some of us are more concerned with putting country first and keeping this nation out of the hands of an incredibly inexperienced hands of an Obama administration.
You say you were “an enthusiastic Palin supporter!” and to check your comment history.
I could also claim over the internet that I’m an unwed minority woman who experienced rape and had to have an abortion, and — by extension — am “OFFENDED!” by Sarah Palin’s comments. It’s the internet. You can make up anything you want.
Back your claims up with some sort of record. Not empty rhetoric. After all, that is a Barack Obama trait.

I don’t get how I am naive. Katie asked a gimme easy question, and if you watch it, was taken aback at how Palin wouldnt answer. After that, she pressed HARD because she thought she could get Palin, and she did. Palin could have EASILY answered the question a multitude of ways. ie. I read a variety of sources such as … or I don’t form my worldview from newspapers and magazines … or I tend to get my news online from sites such as …
Any of those would have been fine questions and nobody would think about them again. If she was trying to avoid a gotcha moment, she walked right into one, as EVERY news outlet will be running with her non answer.

However, this person was a television reporter and the governor of a large state, with executive duties. You know, the same /b/-tards that hacked Palin’s Yahoo! e-mail account.
The same sort that created the offensive article about Sarah Palin on their coveted Encyclopedia Dramatica (google at your own peril).

Too many people are crapping their pants over Palin sucking at interviews. She can hold her own in a debate (google clips of her in the Alaska governor debate). No, not “too many people.” Just paid, $7/hr Obama for America web trolls. This is an extension of “get in their face.”
It happened on blogs re: Hillary. It happened to the PUMA sites that emerged during the Democratic split. Places like “The Confluence” kicked the Obama trolls out pretty good.
HotAir is better than other big conservative sites because registration isn’t always open. But if it were, we’d be seeing quite a bit more of this “concern.”
Don’t buy the snake oil these “concerned Republicans” are selling. We PUMAs saw the same thing for months regarding Hillary Clinton.

And philnewjerk is just one of the many Obambi truth squad members that have decided it would be a good thing to take up residence under the HA overpass here on the information superhighway (damn… haven’t heard that one since al-gore ivented the internet).
I find the ignorance on display amusing. Newspapers nationwide have been in a steady decline for years now. Magazines are getting thinner and thinner as readership and advertising has moved from dated printed info to continually updated electronic news sources that allow us a much richer local and global scope.
This downfall was greatly hastened by the slow choking death of objective journalism, which was thrown over in favor of saul alinski’s slow but steady strategies of socialist infiltration.
But that stuff doesn’t sell. So print media like newspapers and magazines will eventually die.

Because she WAS an editor for a newspaper. And she is pissed as Hell about journalism today. Maybe. But the fact that they won’t ascribe their journalism to any particular person, i.e. name and shame them, has always bugged me. After all, you can get pure FACTS from AP or any other newsfeed. And I don’t believe that they’re so lofty, above-it-all etc etc that they couldn’t possibly be partisan.
Fortunata on September 30, 2008 at 10:31 PM
She did great. She has learned quickly and she has learned well that the MSM has an agenda against anything good. She said a lot when she was vague. She told Couric she was on to her game and went on to beat her at it. Couric wanted a gotcha. Palin was wise to see it for what it was and denied Couric her mischief. hawkdriver on September 30, 2008 at 10:32 PM
It’s a lot less than trifling, Cindy.
Like everyone else, I’m kind of wishing that the McCainiacs had doubled down on Sarah!, shopped her around to the point that by now people would be used to her and she’d be handling interviews like an old hand, but such seeminly obvious conclusions are always easier to see in retrospect – and as a matter of fact “retrospect” hasn’t arrived yet. We won’t really be able to judge until the end of the campaign how she was handled, and what seems obvious now may not seem so obvious later on.
I think we’re back almost to where we were before the Convention speech, though frankly I was feeling a lot more confident then, based on the Dayton debut, than I am now based on Gibson and Couric. I still think she has a chance to grab back a big piece of the change label from Obamabiden.
It’s easy to see how McCain lost his post-Convention lead in the polls: The disappearance of Palinmania as anything other than a base phenomenon coming at the same time as the economy and financial scandal have dominated the headlines. The two things work together, and have created a bad synergy for McCain. If Palin can personalize the economic crisis as the working class representative she is, presenting herself as the only authentic new voice on the national scene at a time that the entire national leadership has been found wanting, she can still turn this thing around.
Of course, she has to pass the bar of competency, but independents and swing voters have already demonstrated a willingness, even an eagerness to accept her that is, needless to say, largely lacking among the nation’s pseudo-intelligentsia from George Will to certain bloggers.
She doesn’t have to out-Biden Biden. She only has to out-Palin him.
CK MacLeod on September 30, 2008 at 10:32 PM
No matter if this was a lead into an attack, and I can’t imagine it is…I despise people when they refuse to just answer simple questions. If you won’t answer what newspapers or magazines you read on a regular basis, don’t offer to give an interview to begin with!
