Palin talks gays, feminism, abortion, and evolution with Couric; Update: Video added

I waited an hour for CBS to post the video. No luck. I’m uploading my own cut so stand by for that; when their version goes up, I’ll swap it in. In the meantime, here’s the transcript. Remember, the rap on Palin is that she’s supposedly a “Christianist” nut ready to impose theocracy at the first opportunity. Here we learn that she supports contraception; doesn’t want to punish abortion with jail time; supports teaching evolution as “an accepted principle” and may very well oppose teaching creationism (it’s ambiguous); and reaffirms that she doesn’t judge gays, partly because she’s had a close friend who’s gay for decades.
And yet. Read through it and tell me what the media will lead with tomorrow. Here’s a hint: It has nothing to do with her policy answers.
Update: Here’s the vid.

Chortle!
Bob's Kid on September 30, 2008 at 9:40 PM
Any print source she named would be criticized. As I just posted, Liberal hacks like Aravosis are spinning her comments on the “morning after pill” into a diatribe about “Palin charging residents for Rape Kits” when that law was on the books prior to her assuming office.
Anything will be spun. ANY print, online, or other media outlet explicitly named would have been scrutinized to high heaven. She avoided it.
“Sarah Palin doesn’t READ!” is a stupid meme. She didn’t flagellate herself by dignifying that question. End of story.
If someone wants to believe Palin never reads any news anywhere, then they always were in the Obama tank.
lansing quaker on September 30, 2008 at 9:40 PM
That’s pretty scary actually.

When all is said and done, I can’t imagine Katie posing these questions to Osama Obama or Joe “Hair-in-a-Can” Biden.
And Marybel, there’s nothing I enjoy as much as a little cleavage early in the morning….

Facts will not stop the Christian-intolerant/ignorant on the left from making up stuff about Gov. Palin.
Facts don’t work when the other person isn’t interested in them.
Religious_Zealot on September 30, 2008 at 9:42 PM
Dang, you Palin/McCain supporters have your standards set really low for this woman. I guess that is to be expected from people who still support Dubya.

Cannot and chooses not to are two different things.

I am sorry, but did I seriously just hear this DUMMY say she reads all newspapers and magazines? She dodged the “what do you read to stay informed?” question? Holy Sh&t thursday is going to be a bloodbath. You couldn’t just throw out newsweek, the NYT as well as the drudgereport? That was too hard to do? I want to punch my speakers and monitors. Its like she is worse at improving than Obama.

OMG! If you really think that a Governor of a state is so stupid that she’s can’t a name a single newspaper you are naive. She didn’t want to name a newspaper because she knew she was being set up. Please tell me what other candidates get asked about their reading habits. It was an extremely offensive question. I believe she was asked that question because she’s from a small town. That’s it.

Spirit of 1776 on September 30, 2008 at 9:47 PM
No. She refused to name what sources she personally reads for news. It wasn’t that she couldn’t name a Newspaper. It’s refusal to disclose what she reads, because that would be scrutinized.
But keep earning your $7/hr, courtesy of Obama for America, along with your cubicle-mate, muyoso.

She provided a non answer, “all of them.”
When pressed, she could not name a single newspaper.

Sakaki on September 30, 2008 at 9:51 PM
COURIC: And when it comes to establishing your world view, I was curious, what newspapers and magazines did you regularly read before you were tapped for this — to stay informed and to understand the world?
PALIN: I’ve read most of them again with a great appreciation for the press, for the media —
COURIC: But what ones specifically? I’m curious.
PALIN: Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me over all these years.
COURIC: Can you name any of them?
PALIN: I have a vast variety of sources where we get our news.
philnewkirk on September 30, 2008 at 9:51 PM
Actually, if I’d been Palin, I would have said something like, “Hey, if you want to know what I read, why don’t you ask the thirty investigative journalists and lawyers digging through my trash at the dump? I’m sure they can provide you with a list.”

Pity that this isn’t 2004 or even 1996 and a moral values election. Sarah is really a libertarian and normal American who doesn’t judge others. (The ‘rents are much more conservative than I am and mom regularly lunches with a gay couple in her neighborhood)… Damn you JMac for screwing us out of Maggie Thatcher 2.0 in four years.
Illinidiva on September 30, 2008 at 9:52 PM
You can tell when McCain/Palin scores because the trolls come out in force. I noticed that a couple of them who critisized Palin for a non-answer wouldn’t tell what they were reading. Afraid that you will get mocked?
Vince on September 30, 2008 at 9:53 PM
Funny how you are mocking Palin but you have SERIOUS reading comprehension issues. Saying “I get my information from various sources” does not equal “I can’t name a single newspaper.” I guess only in your world it does.
terryannonline on September 30, 2008 at 9:54 PM
philnewkirk, why do you presume that all of us McCain/Palin supporters are “conservatives”? Many of us are libertarians.
That’s the beauty of this ticket. It’s brought together both wings of the Right: Libertaian and Conservative.
And with that coalition, the Left is going to have a very hard time defeating us.

I am not sure what the hell you are talking about, but it seriously doesnt bother you that the person you are supporting can’t name a SINGLE paper or magazine she reads? I am a McCain supporter, reluctantly, and I was VERY excited about Palin. Now though, I have to ask, WTF? I mean, you don’t even have to tell the truth there, but when asked what you read to stay informed, you CANNOT say “Oh, I read everything”. She looks like a DUMMY, and the media will jump on that SO SO fast. Most people are already seeing her as an idiot, and she CERTAINLY isnt helping.
I really can’t believe some of you arent offended she couldnt answer such a simple question, or at least worried that she might not read ANYTHING to stay informed about national issues.
muyoso on September 30, 2008 at 9:54 PM
Right on, sister. And as a gay man, I appreciate that.
But I disagree with you on “screwing” Palin. She’s gonna be our next Vice President.
lansing quaker on September 30, 2008 at 9:55 PM
…so, she doesn’t kowtow to the Grey Lady and her bastard children? The press isn’t holy enough to memorize. Good for her.
Considering the treatment she’s gotten from the press since she’s been selected, saying that news is important but that news sources are not important enough to remember might’ve been a good reply.
Puritan1648 on September 30, 2008 at 9:55 PM
Hmmmmm…
The Ugly American on September 30, 2008 at 9:56 PM
Can you imagine if she had named one, say the NY Times? The next question would have been, “really, which article in particular did you read last Thurs. morning, Sept. 25th?”
Stop being a douchebag. She didn’t say b/c it wasn’t worth another gotcha go-round. At least she saw that one coming.
JAM on September 30, 2008 at 9:56 PM
Maybe you don’t realize that anything she mentions will be scruntized for it’s content and anything … anything … be will cause for more baseless attacks. She was intentionally vague because of the media’s mission to play “gotcha” or find anything to falsely hammer her with. Who in the hell reads the NYT’s anyway except people that want their views massaged and validated? It’s a trash, treasonous rag.
Lest you still miss my point, unless she named several left leaning magazines and newspapers … she would have been hammered for being “uniformed” because as we all know, the left, in all their stupendous ignorance and self aggrandizing, think only they know anything.

The fact that she couldn’t through out a SINGLE name of a single newspaper or magazine means that either she had a full 2 minute brain fart, she is just a straight dummy, or she doesnt read ANYTHING to stay informed of national issues. I mean, she DODGED a gimme question. Its like asking her, what sorts of guns do you use to hunt moose, and her response being “All of them”. A person who answers like that has NEVER hunted a moose, let alone has even the most basic knowledge of firearms to lie their way through it. Applied back to the newspapers, its a scary thought.

Dear phil,
If you are so easily frightened why don’t you run home and get your Mommy to make the bad lady go away? Fear of Sarah Palin and her positions just makes you more paranoid and delusional than 95% of Americans. The sight of an al Qaida beheading ceremony must make your bowels evacuate and the yellow stains in your pants lengthen. I’ll bet your head would explode and you’d cry and whine like a dog while they tape you hogtied as they prepare to separate your head from your neck. Why don’t you go hide under your bed until Sarah actually makes the boogie men go away and then you can come back out and piss all over her like the whiny baby you are?

terryannonline on September 30, 2008 at 10:01 PM
Isn’t it time for your free-trade coffee break? No breaks allowed at the Obama for America cubicle? Or are they so generous that they let you “work” from home?
The question was not “Name some major American news sources”. It was “What news sources did you read that help shape your worldview?” Any identified source would be scrutinized, be it WSJ, NYT, Wa-Po, a local/state paper, or an online source.
She avoided the question. And that is more than acceptable. I care not for what “news sources” Palin listens to. Her advisors and policy record are of far more salience.
And don’t was poetic to me about being “excited for Sarah Palin” you Obama for America troll.
I AM a PUMA who supported Palin before she was selected. Here’s a link for you:

Obviously Couric is firing out gotcha questions that she and her other twisted minded liberals love to jump on. The idea of what a person feels about a “morning after pill” is none of Couric’s damn business and it was obvious she was trying to get a hot sound bite. The newspaper question was another blatent liberal ploy. If she read Readers Digest, Saturday Evening Post, McGuffey’s readers (/s) she doesn’t fit the Beltway mold. Clearly if a person doesn’t read the LATimes or the NYT or WaPo you cannot qualify to attend cocktail parties or make decisions that affect an elitist within the Beltway.
