Video: House GOP blames Pelosi’s “partisan” speech for bailout failure

Ace and Slublog already beat me to the punch. There are, conceivably, good reasons to vote against a bailout in a national emergency — if you think it’ll do more economic harm than good, if you think it accrues too much unchecked power to the executive — but being honked off at Nancy is not one of them.

The Dow’s back down to -630 and creeping ever lower as I write this. You know who the big loser is here? Hint: It ain’t Barack Obama.

Update: No revote today, says Boehner. -662 and counting.

Update: -730 as of 3:30 p.m. Looks like people are rushing to dump shares before the end of the trading day.

Pelosi as a leader has a responsibility to act like one. a leader does not blame the entire crisis on those she is wanting her to help. she basically made it that if you voted for this bill you agree that all of Rep principles are wrong. while I agree that unrestrianted greed is bad, greed itself is needed for growth. Just like unreasonable fear is bad a little fear helps protect you.

Pelosi had an oppurtunity to carry the day. she didn’t even need to speak. She could have just stated that the nation needed them. But no she had to try to play politics. since the majority of the Americian people did not want this bill to pass I would say that the reps should be ok. The market action today gives me some hope. I think the FED and FDIC can contain this is they work hard at it. the Paluson plan wanted a quick fix. the dems want the pain to last.

So, I really believe that Nan KNEW she didn’t have the votes and she wanted to play chicken with the repubs…if they all voted in line, she could throw the bailout into their laps….she lost.

Just a Grunt–don’t worry. Citigroup has more money than God. Yeah, it’s Saudi petrodollars, but as long as Harry and Nancy keep us from developing our own oil resources, that Saudi money’s solid.

I sound snarky, but it’s the truth too. Really, don’t worry about it.

Just wait a day or two when this passes with applause and remember this:

The Senate cheers for Palpatine, while Senator Padme Amidala tells herself, “So this is how liberty dies: With thunderous applause.”

Pelosi said that we’d have a great depression if the bill didn’t pass and 40% of her fellow Democrats chose to vote for a great depression, or else 40% of her Democrats think she is an alarmist liar.

Dems control BOTH HOUSES OF CONGRESS. If they can’t get it done, blame them. All they have done for the last two years is blame the republicans for everything that goes wrong. Then they say, please come to our side and help us, and they don’t understand why they stay away.

Can we all please learn the meaning of the political word “pork”. A new bill might be laden with tons of ridiculously crappy liberal sections and outcomes, but “pork” is specific and, frankly, unlikely to be attached. Won’t stop it srom being a terrible bill, but not “pork-laden.”

McCain made a key miscalcualtion by failing to realize this is hardball politics even especially in a crisis. If he’s going to stand up as our national leader but then be afraid to make ACORN’s financial hijacking attempt infamous in America as a shot over Pelosi’s bow, then the Dems smell that weakness and will pounce with ruthless lies to keep Republicans in fear on defense.

When the GOP reaches out in bipartisanship, the Dems are not ever thankful, they attack. How often does this have to happen before we figure out the game?

econavenger on September 29, 2008 at 4:11 PM

Look, here is the deal with Pelosi. A good number of the Dems that voted against this mess don’t care one bit whether she lives or dies. They have all their chips in with one man. The One. Obama.

McCain is pretty much toast. I don’t care what anyone says on Main Street about how great it is this failed. It is great that it failed but those same people are also buying into what Obama is selling. Couple that with the fact that the media and their Washington buds (including so-called Conservatives like Newt) are now on the same page and will proclaim the end of the world shortly, and Obama is the clear winner.

McCain has no comeback. People see the Maverick as an empty suit. The media will not let another old white guy in the white house. They want a black man who is palatable to middle America and they got it with Obama. The Dems who voted against this bill know this and they know that when Obama wins, there will be a new world order in Congress that does not include Pelosi.

When the sky starts falling you will have these big spenders who voted against the bill on the Dem side pushing for even more government intrusion. And they will have a bonafide far left winger in the White House who will not stand in their way.

And I guarantee you ACORN will see millions head their way as a result of this. Obama was an attorney for the group. Come the end of January, the cabinet room is going to look like Showtime at the Apollo — of course their fraudulent efforts to get out the vote will get funded off of our tax dollars.

grdred944 on September 29, 2008 at 4:11 PM

flytier on September 29, 2008 at 4:10 PM

The Dems who voted against it did not do so because they were listening to their constituents, but were pissed about ACORN not being in it and other lefty reasons. They were not acting in the interest of taxpayers.

Guess which side doing so will be outed by the media?

You pessimists still miss the point, that 70% of Americans believe the media wants Barack Obama elected.

Your view of this does NOT include the disconnect between the true will of the American people, the media, the Congress and in this case the Bush Administration.

If Republicans don’t stay above this, then they are the only ones getting the bad press and it serves to strengthen the dem’s positions in 5 weeks.

You must’ve really had to turn your T-shirt and your brain into the most convoluted pretzel the world has ever known, in order to say that!!

Good point. Why isn’t the post-racial, bi-partisan fixer Barry Obama reaching across the aisle and working his magic? Isn’t he the guy who’s going to lower the oceans and heal the planet for us all? Why not start now by healing our financial markets? Take those highly-touted persuasive powers you were going to use to convince Ahmadinejad not to want nukes, and use them for us, O Special One.

Just imagine how far ahead in the polls McCain would be if the media was on his side.

I blame people on both sides of the aisle for not being able to look at a very big problem and put partisan politics and ideological purity aside long enough to come up with a plan to deal with a problem.

If it’s a crisis, act like it is. Show leadership. The correct speech was “this was a difficult week, blah, blah, blah, but we put aside partisan differences on this and worked together to produce a plan, blah, blah, blah.”

A leader would have made a victory speech praising everyone for hard work and dedication to their country. She had to be trying, really trying, to push the bill to failure.

This conundrum reminds me a little of the Amnesty bill. One side kept saying the we needed amnesty now to deal with the 20 million illegal immigrant that are already in the country, the other side kept saying we needed to secure the border first. Of course we ended up with neither.

but being honked off at Nancy is not one of them.

Wrong, Pelosi made it known that this was not a bill for the people, but a bill for the democrats to gain power.
Time to take a time out, and take another look at the bill and make sure it is the right bill.
It is not to any ones best interest to pass a bill that is basically designed to help a party gain control. The reason for the bill is to help the people and the economy.
Red flags went up, time to re-look at the bill, it is an economic bill, not a political bill.
And how stupid is she for making it that…how utterly stupid, if she kept her mouth shut, but then she may have known she did not have the votes, so maybe this was her way out.

McCain blames Obama for bailout defeat

Shortly after the bailout vote, a statement from the campaign of Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) blamed the loss on “the Democratic leadership: Senators [Barack] Obama and [Harry] Reid, Speaker [Nancy] Pelosi and others.

“Their partisan attacks were an effort to gain political advantage during a national economic crisis. By doing so, they put at risk the homes, livelihoods and savings of millions of American families,” said the statement, released in the name of senior policy adviser Douglas Holtz-Eakin.

When a bill of this magnitude comes to the floor and the majority party cannot get 40% of their members to vote for it, it is bad. And that is an understatement.

People who contemplate their lost jobs have already found someone to blame. It’s either big bad government, the rich, their employer or the Chinese. Most of them, as well as most of the employed, have no idea what any of this means. They are just waiting for Fox/CNN/MSNBC to tell them how to think.

This is why it benefits Obama to have this panic and why his key supporters in the House helped defeat this bill.

A 3 page bill morphs into 108 pages of nonsense, minus the 20% for ACORN, and the House democrats DON’T pass it. Hmmmm. Eric Cantor needs to write a simple bill that restores the protections, read regulations, that allowed this fiscal irresponsibility to occur. Then Boehner needs to demand a vote on that bill BEFORE allowing a vote for any monies to be appropriated for Paulson’s and Obama’s economic advisers old cronies on Wall Street and at Freddie/Fannie.

Gohawgs on September 29, 2008 at 4:21 PM

Obama proven overly optimistic

Obama’s prepared remarks, from earlier today in Colorado.

“And today, Democrats and Republicans in Washington have agreed on an emergency rescue plan that is our best and only way to prevent an economic catastrophe.”

Not so much.

UPDATE: After seeing the bill fail, Obama scapped the originial script and talked of Rocky Mountain-like turbulence:

“And today, Democrats and Republicans in Washington have a responsibility to make sure that an emergency rescue package is put forward that can at least stop the immediate problems we have so we can begin to plan for the future. As I said, this is a hard thing to do. And right now Democratic and Republican leaders have agreed but members have not yet agreed.

Unlike Allah, I think Nancy’s idiotic blatherings and outright lies about Republicans were a very good reason to vote against this bill. You don’t keep giving candy to the crying baby, and you certainly don’t reward shameless liars.

In any case it was her job to make sure she had the votes before she brought it up for a vote

That’s absolutely wrong, and not even close to the truth. It was the biggest point drop, but not even close in percentage terms.

you still don’t get it. does -750pts not tell you something? The only way this is solved is if the credit starts flowing yes there are other ways to do this then paulson’s plan but…is there time..

Stocks go up, stocks go down. Profits aren’t guaranteed, ever.

Paulson cooked up his plan with the people who got us in trouble to begin with. He met exclusively with the dems for days before he ever sat down with members of his own boss’s political party. ( That makes me wonder if Paulson is Bush’s boss rather than the other way around, but that’s a subject for another day.)

Sorry, but that stinks. And before somebody signs over 700 billion dollars, I think it’s appropriate that we investigate whether that’s really necessary…and sorry to say, I’m not comfortable taking Pelosi, Reed, Dodd, Frank, or Paulson’s word for that.

funky chicken on September 29, 2008 at 4:24 PM

Let’s put this into perspective: After 9/11, the DOW fell to around 7,000. We are still around 10,000.

We as Americans can pick ourselves up again, even if we fall as we did when we thought the whole economy was going to collapse.

7,000 hurts, but it doesn’t kill. The American worker is the most resiliant and inovative in the entire world. We’re in tough shape, but we’ve been much worse. We may continue a temporary struggle, but in the end, America’s best days are ahead of her, and our economy, with the ideals of the free market still in-hand, will prevail.

God Bless.

“The Dems who voted against it did not do so because they were listening to their constituents, but were pissed about ACORN not being in it and other lefty reasons. They were not acting in the interest of taxpayers.”
CanadianGuy just opened my eyes on this…But of course! The Dimbulbs have the luxury of then pointing their fingers at the Repubs and blaming them for this ‘failure’, calling them un-American by not wanting to fund racist, anti-American orgs like La Raza. Are they all on psychiatric drugs?
Also, I wonder how many of those Repubs who signed on to the bailout are in deep with these lenders. Meanwhile, Barry’s connections are ignored and projected onto McCain, as in that idiot Rodriguez in the LA Slimes, (See Top Headlines.)

Christine on September 29, 2008 at 4:24 PM

I heard that the dems knew that they only had 70 Republican votes(Shepard Smith’s show)so why did she call for the vote? Did she not know that so many dems were voting against it?

Answer: Politics! Bill goes down. Dems are all over the TV telling everyone that the Republicans are unpatriotic and send Roger Waters to the “HA” sight to do their nefarious dirty work!

They seem to think they are insulated from this by some magic barrier that separates Wall Street for us every day folks.

Wow. Stop trusting the MSM for christ’s sake. Let me give you perspective: The first trading day after 9/11, the Dow dropped 7.2 percent. 1987, it was almost 23 percent. 1929, it was over 40 percent. Today was 6.9 percent.

Please, do a little research.

The bottom line to me is that pass or fail, the Republicans would have been spit on by the Democrats for something. That’s the one constant in all this.

Given that, I don’t blame the Republicans for telling the truth. Pelosi could have shared credit, could have put the brakes on the anti-Republican (B/S) rhetoric, but that was apparently too much to ask.

Sometimes these conversations make me think we’re acting like a bunch of battered women. If the Republican leadership had come out and been conciliatory, we’d all be banging our heads against the wall over that too.

capitalist piglet on September 29, 2008 at 4:32 PM

Only down about 6.5%!!! Get a grip. Credit froze when the banks heard they were getting some money. If I were going to loan you some money and then heard that the rules were about to change, think I’d loan it? Nope!

They’ll get a bill, abetter one, and everyone who is buying will make money. This is how it’s always been. Most people panic. Warren Buffet and Bill Gates buy!

Vince on September 29, 2008 at 4:32 PM

Dow 8000 is fine with me. I am heavily invested in the market, but at least I am still free and government/Wall Street will have a reality check leading to real change.

Cheap credit is a crime against nature and should be paid for by everyone- not just the taxpayer.

I think a lot of folks here want Obama to win. Some of them try to pretend like they are republicans to discourage people, etc.

Oh, and remember Saturday, when The One was telling his adoring crowds all about how he had saved the day, and crafted this fantastic compromise bailout package, etc etc? Cue that Hillary Clinton video “and the clouds will part, and the sun will shine upon us all” blah blah for The One.
