Video: House GOP blames Pelosi’s “partisan” speech for bailout failure

Ace and Slublog already beat me to the punch. There are, conceivably, good reasons to vote against a bailout in a national emergency — if you think it’ll do more economic harm than good, if you think it accrues too much unchecked power to the executive — but being honked off at Nancy is not one of them.

The Dow’s back down to -630 and creeping ever lower as I write this. You know who the big loser is here? Hint: It ain’t Barack Obama.

Update: No revote today, says Boehner. -662 and counting.

Update: -730 as of 3:30 p.m. Looks like people are rushing to dump shares before the end of the trading day.

Sometimes you lose when you go to the casinos

Stocks are not casinos. Shares of Exxon, Apple, IBM and Wal Mart are parts of great companies that employ America’s workforce. The problem is dumbass politicians forcing companies to lend money to people who can’t pay it back.

spec_ops_mateo on September 29, 2008 at 3:44 PM

Don’t blame the GOP – the Dem’s are in the majority. They can pass it WITHOUT the GOP if the deal is so d*mn good.

JustTruth101 on September 29, 2008 at 3:43 PM

This really is the bottom line on this vote.

t.ferg on September 29, 2008 at 3:44 PM

What a disaster. This is just ridiculous. I am so disgusted with people on both sides of the aisle for their complete inability to come up with a rational solution that I am ready to throw them all out.

I hope all those people who wanted this to die are prepared for what might come next.

But rich people will be alright. I don’t care if they are on the left or the right, most of them will survive. People like Rush Limbaugh and Nancy Pelosi will not lose everything.

For people like me, it is a very different world.

You’re doing it wrong.

Editor on September 29, 2008 at 3:45 PM

thank god John McCain suspended his campaign … heck who knows, without his bumbling interference, this thing might have passed. He succeeded by being a screw up!

Monkei on September 29, 2008 at 3:41 PM

Selective memory? Savior Barry said it was all his ideas in that bill and you couldn’t get your own party to vote for it.
Shut up you big dopes!
McCain is doing what a Senator is suppose to do, work for the people who elected him. Unlike Barry, who puts himself over EVERYTHING!

I thought Rosh Hashana was Sunday and today.

Am I wrong? Or is this one of those….Holiday/Holiday Observed kinds of things?

JadeNYU on September 29, 2008 at 3:42 PM

Nevermind. This is what happens when you get your Jewish holiday information from someone on the other side of the planet.

You’re right. It starts sundown today.

JadeNYU on September 29, 2008 at 3:45 PM

The democrats are in the majority, the republicans spot them 65 votes, and the dems still cannot get the bill passed?

The dems could stand to lose 82 votes, and lost 95?!? Are you kidding me? That means only 140 democrats of 235 voted in favor, or just 59.5%, for the bailout. Regardless of the hurt feelings, the Speaker and their whip (Hoyer) didn’t even unify their own party today.

Did they not like the speaker’s speech on the floor either?

pt on September 29, 2008 at 3:45 PM

Whacker,

Just how do you propose banning parties? At least in a free country. Not that you favor free countries.

MarkTheGreat on September 29, 2008 at 3:45 PM

Oh, and the Dow just rallied 200 points.

So not so much ‘dumping’ as ‘piling in’.

Martin on September 29, 2008 at 3:45 PM

Still up over 10k.

What are you babies crying about?

VolMagic on September 29, 2008 at 3:46 PM

The House GOP vote has basically ended McCain’s candidacy, in my opinion. This is unbelievably irresponsnible and I cannot tell you how angry I am at the GOP for this.

Outlander on September 29, 2008 at 3:40 PM

Oh for heaven’s sakes! I’d put two bits to your wooden nickle that McCain will jump on this as an opportunity to “reach out” to the Dems in the Senate to get a solution. What will Barry do then? Vote against it? Will Harry have the balls to stonewall McCain’s move in the Senate and be seen as obstructionist to bipartisan effort? This could yet turn out to be very good for McCain.

Browncoatone on September 29, 2008 at 3:46 PM

Where’s the Messiah? With one stroke of his hand he could solve this problem…Where is the “One” and all of his followers? Did they not vote for this bill?

d1carter on September 29, 2008 at 3:46 PM

A note to hot Air’s editors

How about an open thread discussing possible solutions?

Please?

As a starter, here’s mine:

1 – suspend SOX immediately, move to repeal in the house and let the market sort out the mess.

2 – push the national energy plan (drill here, drill now) as the real economic antidote to the housing value losses (ponzi collapse) we’re seeing now.

3 – McCain campaign announces plan to investigate and prosecute those responsible. Specifically mentions Dodds, Raines, Johnson, et al. Makes blame for this mess a campaign issue.

4 – McCain media campaign makes big thing out of Democrat double speak: the drilling bill than bans drilling, the fairness doctrine that censors one side, the free choice act that denies free choice, and the Pelosi speech blaming Republican opposition to regulation when it was the Democrats who opposed early moves to head this off and the Republicans who proposed regulatory reform.

Paul Murphy on September 29, 2008 at 3:47 PM

I don’t think the market will crash. We did the right thing. I think God will protect our nation.

fossten on September 29, 2008 at 3:25 PM

Please. If there is a god, he (or she or it) is the maker of a mammoth universe, the scope and nature of which the human mind is only beginning to grapple with. The odds are slim indeed that the maker of a such thing has an account with eTrade.

paul006 on September 29, 2008 at 3:47 PM

I think all of the megative nellie commenters here, especially Outsider, either need to take a chill pill or put a bullet in their heads.

If this country goes down into the gutter, it ain’t gonna be my fault or the people who voted against this farce of a bill.

I’ve had enough of people crying “It’s all over for McCain. It’s all over for Republicans.” You all don’t know what is out there. You don’t volunteer and actually get out into the streets like I do. You know what the people were saying today here on Main Street, Oregon, USA? “3 of Oregon’s 5 voted NAY? Keep it up!” The 3 that voted against it? All Dems.

So, I state to just about everyone here who are yammering their jaws, wailing and gnashing their teeth, to shut up, sit down, and wait. We’re gonna be fine. People like Outlander are Obama plants trying to say “Oh, it’s all over.”

It’s not over until I say it’s over.

Sakaki on September 29, 2008 at 3:47 PM

Let’s see how has my day been?
I get informed that my bank has been taken over by Citigroup
I have no idea what the status of my mortgage is anymore.
The gas stations around here are out of gas, even though the price of oil is falling.
And there is no guarantees that at the end of the week I will still have a job.
The stock market is tanking and taking my 401k with it.

And this is just Monday.

Just A Grunt on September 29, 2008 at 3:47 PM

So let me get this straight: The Bush Administration pushed this bill, and the Pelosi-led House failed to pass it because she could only muster 60% of Democrats to vote for it. And Republicans will get the blame for the bill not passing. Have I got all that right?

We are doomed, doomed.

I say if the dem’s want a fight, if they want to see partisanship, let’s punch them in the face. Every trip to the microphone, start reading from the speeches of Maxine Waters and Barney Fife about how “stable” Fannie and Freddie are, followed up by the McCain speech calling for reform back in 2005. I’m sick and tired of going along to get along. They want a fight? Fine – let’s fight the real fight: liberal principles v conservative principles. The freaking future of our country depends on it.

Mercy4Me on September 29, 2008 at 3:48 PM

You know those Republicans that voted no, and those that were pissed off at her speech, have voters backing them at home. And as one of those voters I am damn glad that finally someone started fighting back instead of just getting up the ass all the time. Maybe they will go back to the drawing board and actually get something constructive done for the American People. She assumed that Republicans were just going to sit there and take her lies, and be called unpatriotic, she was wrong.

spypeach on September 29, 2008 at 3:48 PM

Allahpundit dude, getting honked off at Nancy was just the final straw. She was a) laughing her head off last night b) calling them “unpatriotic” for missing a sassion they weren’t invited to and c) so drunk with power she flies around the chamber on her broom BEFORE the vote?
Here’s a clue, pal. There ARE other ways around this mess despite what Paulson and Cramer Bush say.
Sorry for you guys getting beat up in the market today – but I am betting this too shall pass. The FUNDAMENTALS OF OUR ECONOMY ARE STRONG. This is a liquidity crisis, remember? Suspend mark-to-market NOW. Anyone who tries to fudge the books in this crisis GOES IMMEDIATELY TO JAIL.
There’s a start.

craig on September 29, 2008 at 3:48 PM

what gives with attacking republicans over this?

dems could’ve passed this themselves. and pelosi’s speech was about unchecked regulation – when YOU, HotAir posted the video earlier about how the dems opposed the regulation. Make that point !

darkegop on September 29, 2008 at 3:48 PM

Like they always say…

The sky has to fall sometime.

This could be it…the perfect storm.

I was shocked that so many in the blogoshere thought McCain won the debate, I was happy to hope they were right, but I wasn’t seeing it.

Today it looks as if McCain’s less than stellar debate performance, and his somewhat bizarre “suspend the campaign” stunt have paid off in loses in all the polls, on every issue.

Add the current drama and we may be headed for the unspeakable.

Doomed?

When there is blood on the (wall) street, BUY BUY BUY!

Ain’t going to see a discount of such fantastic companies for a looong time. S&P went up almost 100% after the lows of 2002 until late 2007 (when the credit slide started).

S&P up 60% since 2002 lows, even today. And that is just the S&P, some stocks go gangbusters. Like Apple, Sothern Copper, IBM.

SO, those of you that invest and are “in it to win it” (long term), have fun over the next months and snag those basement bargans. I know I am.

If the economy completely tanks, which I doubt, money will be the least of my worries! :)

spec_ops_mateo on September 29, 2008 at 3:52 PM

What a bunch of lily-livered Dem appeasers some of you folks are. Listen if you have a Dem leadership that is openly and brazenly trying to make political hay out of a crisis, and they literally dare the GOP to defy them, what the hell do you expect??? Especially when the Democrats could PASS the freakin’ bill all by themselves.

So, we have HA commenters and bloggers going all wobbly and blaming it on the good guys. Or at least the better than dirt guys.

AP, your boss doesn’t seem to have a problem with the Republicans who voted against the bill – why are you so sure it was a mistake?

Actually, if Pelosi ever bothered to research anything before she blurted out her canned “failed Bush policies” phrase that we have all heard as many times as she blinks in a 3 minute period…she would realize that this disaster happened in PART because of her own party’s failed policies. People are on edge and facing an enormous challenge and what does she do? Poke a stick at them and taunt them like a 3 year old. She’s a total idiot, playing with fire like that. I’m surprised the whole GOP didn’t walk out in disgust. I know it’s like throwing the baby out with the bath water not to vote for this because of her speech, but it’s about time she got called on her moronic behavior.

Good point, when these homes are foreclosed on, the “owners” removed anything of value like fixtures, a/c, heaters, and then some scumbags leave their animals to starve there. Great Americans, huh? No wonder these foreclosed homes are worth nothing.

tomg51 on September 29, 2008 at 3:58 PM

The closest I have come to reading an actual quote from a Republican blaming Pelosi’s speech for the failure is this:

FOX:

House Republican Conference Chairman, Rep. Adam Putnam, R-Fla., said “he was disappointed that the process that yielded a bipartisan approach took a very marked, partisan tone at the end of the debate.”

If any Republican member of the House actually said they were going to vote for this, but then voted against it because of Pelosi’s speech, that member is being as childish and irresponsible as Pelosi was in her speech.

Where are the adults we need to stop or at least slow down a national economic crisis?

Loxodonta on September 29, 2008 at 3:58 PM

House Republicans are a pathetic bunch. They are blaming their vote on something Pelosi said. You guys either believed in the bill or you didn’t and you should say so with your vote and do whats right. Sound like a bunch of babies and should be ashamed of themselves. Why do they fear Pelosi, Dodd, Frank, etc…? Why don’t they call them out on their lies and revisionism? Cowards!

Slublog on September 29, 2008 at 3:58 PM

“From the minute John McCain suspended his campaign and arrived in Washington to address this crisis, he was attacked by the Democratic leadership: Senators Obama and Reid, Speaker Pelosi and others. Their partisan attacks were an effort to gain political advantage during a national economic crisis. By doing so, they put at risk the homes, livelihoods and savings of millions of American families.

“Barack Obama failed to lead, phoned it in, attacked John McCain, and refused to even say if he supported the final bill.

“Just before the vote, when the outcome was still in doubt, Speaker Pelosi gave a strongly worded partisan speech and poisoned the outcome.

“This bill failed because Barack Obama and the Democrats put politics ahead of country.”

—McCain-Palin senior policy adviser Doug Holtz-Eakin

BigD on September 29, 2008 at 3:58 PM

One more point: How, exactly, can McCain be blamed when 40% of the nays come from the Democrats? If voters wanted to punish the appropriate entity here, then they would clean house of all their representatives in November and start with a fresh crop.

Mutnodjmet on September 29, 2008 at 3:58 PM

The MAJORITY of the dems voted FOR it.

Roger Waters on September 29, 2008 at 3:56 PM

240 Dems voted. 100 voted against it. All they needed was 11 little votes. They couldn’t get it. If anything, the Republicans showed they were more organized around their stance than the Democrats were.

MadisonConservative on September 29, 2008 at 3:58 PM

The House GOP vote has basic
ally ended McCain’s candidacy, in my opinion. This is unbelievably irresponsnible and I cannot tell you how angry I am at the GOP for this.

Outlander on September 29, 2008 at 3:40 PM

DO WHAT?????

I don’t presume to know how this is going to play in the polls later on today – but I do have a bit more faith in the American voting public than you seem to. Just because the Dems have jumped out in front of the cameras to wring their hands and point fingers, don’t assume that we’re hearing the whole story, or that we the people can’t apply deductive reasoning to conclude that almost 100 Democrats voted against their own majority leader.

We are doomed, doomed. – Dudley Smith on September 29, 2008 at 3:47 PM

Nah, give it till Friday. If McCain doesn’t fire a broadside at Pelosi and her fellow traitors and if Sarah gets eviscerated in her debate with Plugs, THEN you can panic.

But I wouldn’t use the word “doomed” as it’s fraught with all sorts of eschatological and apocalyptical baggage.

If the unthinkable happens and Bambi is elected chancellor president we won’t be doomed.

We’ll be fucked… totally, absolutely, undeniably fucked.

Feel better?

ManlyRash on September 29, 2008 at 3:58 PM

I think some people need reminding of what the job of the Speaker is. Failures of bills on the floor come down to nothing but the incompetence of the Speaker and, in cases like this, require their resignation. Now, if the Dems could get the blowhards (and financial vandals) Dodd and Franks out of the bill then we might be able to come up with some decent legislation.

However, the first piece of work should be a repeal of the CRA. Plain and simple. That should have been done a week ago, and there is no excuse.

progressoverpeace on September 29, 2008 at 3:59 PM

So, I really believe that Nan KNEW she didn’t have the votes and she wanted to play chicken with the repubs…if they all voted in line, she could throw the bailout into their laps….she lost.

HornetSting on September 29, 2008 at 3:59 PM

“House Republicans are a pathetic bunch. Cowards!

nottakingsides on September 29, 2008 at 3:58 PM”

Agreed. “WAAAAAAAAA, we didnt like what Nancy Pelosi so we F*cked the American people.” Fire all of them.

The bank where I have a checking account was taken over by another bank over 20 years ago.

I continued to write checks against funds in that account for two yearswith the wrong name on those checks and never had one come back. The new back paid every one of those checks. I used the old checks until they were used up.

Your mortgage will be the same. You pay it the same way to the same building (should it remain open under a different name), you make you payment to the new name, the old name, combination of both, to the same address you have been paying, or the new bank will tell you where to make your payments. Nothing changes.

For most of us normal people, when a bank gets taken over, the only thing that changes is the name on the building.

So, I state to just about everyone here who are yammering their jaws, wailing and gnashing their teeth, to shut up, sit down, and wait. We’re gonna be fine. People like Outlander are Obama plants trying to say “Oh, it’s all over.”

It’s not over until I say it’s over.

I just read NRO’s take on this…and I’m inclined to agree, the next bill will be packed with so much pork it’ll look like a sausage factory. All the crap that came out of it will be shoved back in, and then some. Gotta sweeten the pot, don’t ya know?

uncivilized on September 29, 2008 at 4:02 PM

Speak for yourself. If this thing is half as bad as some people think it is, I hope all the people who helped kill it are the first to lose everything.

And by the way if anyone thinks that this rescue bill would turn America into a socialist hell hole, they don’t know what they are talking about.

Weight of Glory on September 29, 2008 at 4:03 PM

How can you blame this on the Republicans?
They didnt need Republican support to pass this piece of crap!!!!

If anything the Republicans need to stand up and get a spine and lay the blame where blame is due!

HoosierCon on September 29, 2008 at 3:29 PM

The Republicans cannot win no matter what. They will get slammed by the MSM and the dems whether they pass the bill or not. The will get slammed by the conservative blogs and commentators if they pass it because they surrendered their principles and bent over for the corrupt democrats. They will get slammed by the blogs and commentators if they do not pass it because people appear to care more about their financial security than their principles. I don’t see how they can win with the left or with the right.

neuquenguy on September 29, 2008 at 4:03 PM

Worst – House Speaker – Ever.

Nothing good will come out of the House as long as this complete idiot is in charge of it.

NoDonkey on September 29, 2008 at 4:03 PM

The MAJORITY of the dems voted FOR it. The MAJORITY of Repubs (2 to 1) voted AGAINST it. People watching their nest eggs go away will CORRECTLY blame the GOP.

Nonsense. How long did we hear Pelosi and Reid say if they were in the majority they could change things. How often did we hear Pelosi say the Dems were in control now and things were gonna change.

You can’t have your cake and it eat too.

Dems control BOTH HOUSES OF CONGRESS. If they can’t get it done, blame them. All they have done for the last two years is blame the republicans for everything that goes wrong. Then they say, please come to our side and help us, and they don’t understand why they stay away.

Pelosi’s an idiot. There’s your problem.

fogw on September 29, 2008 at 4:04 PM

Allah is right on this. Both sides are now making moves based on pure partisan politics. Guess which side doing so will be outed by the media? ***
MadisonConservative on September 29, 2008 at 3:55 PM

You are correct, sir. And McCain publicly allied himself with the House GOP, who killed the bill and blamed it on Nancy Pelosi’s partisan speech. And while everyone on here keeps talking about great market-based solutions (e.g. repeal CRA and do something with Freddie/Fannie), name ONE alternative bill out there that incorporates those solutions, and/or name ONE Member of Congress or interest group that’s proposed such an alternative plan? The only one I can think of is the one the House GOP just voted down — doing federal mortgage insurance instead of a straight buyout of bad debt.

Outlander on September 29, 2008 at 4:04 PM

The bill only failed by 20 votes and 94 democrats voted against it!

Nancy Pelosi is to blame for giving that a speech before the vote!

Chakra Hammer on September 29, 2008 at 4:04 PM

In spite of the fact that I’m losing my shirt today, I can’t help but sympathize with the GOP dissenters. Not only have the Dems CAUSED this crisis with their redistributive-minded tinkering with banking laws AND their uncharacteristic anti-regulatory stance relative to Fanny and Freddie, they’ve been allowed by the MSM to pretend that this is somehow the result of REPUBLICAN deregulation efforts. Unreal.

And of course, as is already happening, Pelosi’s failure to manage her own members (who could have passed this on their own) will be blamed on us too.

Infidoll on September 29, 2008 at 4:04 PM

Are Republican leaders actually this lame to blame hurt feelings? Just vote it down on purely free market principles.
