The bad news? If they ask her any questions about Gaza, it could be dicey. The good news? Thanks to today’s vote, there won’t be any time for questions about Gaza.

How about rescheduling, in say, December?

How can it be that some people still pretend that Sarah Palin is suited for high office?

Probably because our opinions are influenced by the publications that employ Andy Sullivan.

I don’t get why people are bent about her answer? What do you want her to do, repudiate Bush’s freedom doctrine? Ain’t gonna happen, she believes that we are given rights by the Creator. So sorry, no soundbite against democracy in ME coming.

Spirit of 1776 on September 29, 2008 at 3:00 PM

How can it be that some people still pretend that Sarah Palin is suited for high office? This country has never seen someone so comprehensively unprepared for the vice presidency; Dan Quayle was Metternich by comparison.

Nice link there, AP. Good stuff. We need more hit pieces like that. Keep up the great work.

Thanks to today’s vote, there won’t be any time for questions about Gaza.

You’ve got to be joking. Gwen Eiffel will decide what should be discussed, and it has nothing to do with what both parites agreed upon before the debate. It has to do with how they can make Palin look bad.

Let’s get real.

The McCain/Obama debate topic was foreign policy and national security. The first 45 minutes of the debate focused on the economic crisis at hand because Lehrer decided it needed discussion. Everyone agrees that Obama was the clear winner during that phase of the debate, and McCain stood tall on foreign policy issues.

Now, if Lehrer had stuck to the agreed upon topic for the debate, Obama would not have had any opportunity to shine on the topic of the economy. If Lehrer had stuck to the agreed upon topic, McCain would have handily won the debate. The left-wing liberal media could not afford to let that happen.

Lehrer is part of the left wing media.
Eiffel is a life-long member too.

She will not hesitate to play gotcha with Sarah and throw fig leaves at the feet of The One.

Count on it. Again.

The entire election rests with Palin’s performance on Thursday and I have no problem with that. I think everyone would do themselves a big favor by checking out her previous debate performances while running for office to get an idea of her prowess.

titus_pullo on September 29, 2008 at 3:10 PM

This debate has the chance to be really ugly for Sarah, or a slam dunk win for her…we know what to expert from Biden, hyperbole, lies and sarcasm, but do you think she can pull it together…especially on domestic issues? I am not sure.

I want to believe, because if she hits a triple or homerun, the momentum will shift again. If she does poorly, I am afraid of a permanent shift.

joepub on September 29, 2008 at 3:11 PM

What on earth? I can’t find the transcript, but I recall Palin answering the Gaza question exactly as I’ve been waiting for a politician to answer it with regard to an area where historically the rule has been one man, one vote, one time: Saying that they have to keep having elections, they will make bad choices and good ones, but through persistent democratic action they will do better. Methinks the Atlantic is ignoring part of the answer.

raybury on September 29, 2008 at 3:11 PM

“What happens if the goal of democracy doesn’t produce the desired outcome? In Gaza, the U.S. pushed hard for elections and Hamas won.”

How is that an endorsement for Hama? Unless I’m hopelessly in the grip of a senior moment, didn’t Hamas win? Didn’t we push for the election that put Hamas in charge? Isn’t she saying that the downside of democracy is that sometimes morons get elected, such as Hamas (or Democrats)?

Please mercifully explain what I’m missing here.

Elizabetty on September 29, 2008 at 3:15 PM

If there was a big loser in the House vote today, it was the media, right and left. And I am hoping to see this replayed in the Biden/Palin debate.

BigD on September 29, 2008 at 3:16 PM

“I’ve been hearing about his senate speeches since I was in, like, second grade.”

Ha Ha! No democrat can talk about how Palin ‘lacks experience’ without bringing up the point that she’s the VP, while Obama has even less practical experience to be president of all of them. Between McCain, Biden, Palin and Obama, it’s Obama who is the weakest, and the last on that list.

And, any mention about how ‘McCain is old’ can’t go without the reply that Biden has been a career politician since, well – forever. – and Biden is for “Change?” Right.

wise_man on September 29, 2008 at 3:17 PM

Sarah is tough and intelligent. All she needs to do is have a sensible, logical argument for the problems in the economy and the war on terror. If Biden has proven anything it’s that he frequently gets diarrhea of the mouth and even more frequently has no idea what he is talking about. His philosophy has always been to talk long, fast and loud so nobody will have any idea what you said or meant.

She has a challenge but I think she’s up to it.

rplat on September 29, 2008 at 3:18 PM

I hope Palin mentions this about Biden:

http://hotair.com/archives/2008/08/23/bidens-foreign-policy-chops/

At the Tuesday-morning meeting with committee staffers, Biden launches into a stream-of-consciousness monologue about what his committee should be doing, before he finally admits the obvious: “I’m groping here.” Then he hits on an idea: America needs to show the Arab world that we’re not bent on its destruction. “Seems to me this would be a good time to send, no strings attached, a check for $200 million to Iran,” Biden declares. He surveys the table with raised eyebrows, a How do ya like that? look on his face.

McCain is struggling in the polls, but I’ve been thinking this week could be ripe for a huge turnaround. Could. If McCain pounces on this bailout fiasco and advocates a bipartisan solution, and if Palin speaks her mind and floors Biden, we could see a big change.

But those are big ifs.

Pope Linus on September 29, 2008 at 3:23 PM

The entire election rests with Palin’s performance on Thursday and I have no problem with that. I think everyone would do themselves a big favor by checking out her previous debate performances while running for office to get an idea of her prowess.

Look, I’m a huge Palin fan as well, and more than a little tired of APs negative vibe.

But some folks need a heavy dose of reality.

I’m not saying that Palin didn’t do well in her previous debates. I’m not saying that she won’t do well on Thursday.

But there’s no analogy between doing well in her Alaska debates, and how well she’ll do on Thursday.

If we can agree on anything, we can agree that Sarah eats, drinks, sleeps, lives and breathes ALASKA. Of course she’ll do well in a debate about Alaska.

She needs to get “up to speed” on the other 49 states and national issues by Thursday. And hopefully they can get her there without completely destroying everything that makes Sarah, Sarah.

Anybody want to guess if Energy policy will be one of Gwen Ifyll’s topics?

I’m guessing no.

benjamin on September 29, 2008 at 3:27 PM

Sarah needs to work into one her answers her amazement with Sen Biden’s campaigning ability. The fact that he is such the consummate politician that he can run for two offices at the same time. Hell even handing him a check made out to Biden for Senate Committee might make for good political theater. ‘Because thats where you belong Joe.’

meci on September 29, 2008 at 3:29 PM

I hope she asks Mr Plugs which of FDR’s televised speeches did he think was best ?

All she has to do is quote his record of being far left and wrong on almost all issues for 35 years.

Why does she have to know all answers when this clown hasn’t been right in decades?

I hope she attacks Biden and BHO’s records again and again. It drives BHO mad.

DeweyWins on September 29, 2008 at 3:31 PM

I think painting that reply as an endorsement of Hamas is a bit of a stretch on the part of the Atlantic. It’s not as eloquent as I would prefer, but its seems to be the standard political, “I don’t want to answer that question so I’m gonna ignore whatever was inconvenient about your question and just answer the part I want to.”

Yeah, we’re going down anyway, we might as well go for a shot in the ‘nads to throw him off his game and force the media to relive that whole episode in Biden’s past.

She can’t win this thing for McCain on Thursday, but I think she can lose it. A showing of incompetence could demoralize the base.

Dudley Smith on September 29, 2008 at 3:38 PM

It’s not Palin’s fault that McCain is so weak that everything hinges on one @#$% VP debate. It seems like just a month ago most commenters on HotAir were pushing Palin for the thing conservatives love about her, that she is a solid conservative. She is the same today as she was then, a solid conservative with a good record. She never fit the mold of your standard Harvard-educated smooth insider spinner type. There is no surprise here whatsoever. Get a grip and stop flip-flopping after every little up and down in her journey.

nottakingsides on September 29, 2008 at 3:38 PM

Palin needs to bring up Biden’s recent comments on clean coal plants. Not only in terms of how it will impact energy and national security needs, but also in terms of how it will impact coal miners and every other working class person who is connected to the coal industry.

You managed to make us all completely forget how much we don’t really like or trust him.

Here’s hoping you can kick Joe’s ass and get the campaign back on solid footing.

Dorvillian on September 29, 2008 at 3:53 PM

I do so hope that Sarah’s spontaneity and spunk are on display on Thursday. She has demonstrated nimble wits and infectious charm in the past, but all those qualities have become besotted with the campaign’s understandable but ultimately counterproductive efforts to transmogrify her into some kind of instant Wonk. It’s as if we were forced to reflect consciously on every small muscle movement involved in the act of walking: we would never get up off our posteriors.

As with any intensive training regimen, the key is to learn the specific subsets of a skill so well that one may then “forget” them when it comes time to apply them. I can only hope that Sarah’s sputtering attempts to regurgitate the data with which she’s been loaded are the equivalent of learning katas in the martial arts, only to have them fade into a preconscious medium of resources when the time comes to spar for real.

I for one am guardedly confident that the warmth and poise and vivacity which so define Gov. Palin’s personality will be on full display this week.

From the article:

See? Not that hard. Unless you don’t:

a) Know what happened in Gaza;
b) Know where Gaza is;
c) Know who rules Gaza today;
d) Care.

e) Know which answer your McCain handlers want you to give to maintain some nuanced, mavericky narrative.

We’ve all seen the Alaska debates, we know she’s quick on her feet and articulate when she’s herself. Let’s just hope they let her be herself in the debates, and that “herself” includes a passing knowledge of the topics.

I don’t think AP’s comment on the Gaza question was out of line or a sign of any particular negativity. Her answer on Gaza was indecipherable, simply put.

So is the Democrat Party’s policy on Gaza. No net loss, here, imo. I don’t really care what she thinks about Gaza – since there is absolutely no concensus or prevailing wisdom. Obambi is out of the mainstream on the Palestinian question, and to the left, as always. He is a poseur on Isreal policy, as witnessed by his desperate pronouncements of support for Israel, in order to save American Jewish votes.

The better question for Allah might be why not point that all out, rather than just Sarah P’s possible weakness on the nuances of the issue. As Goldberg points out – no one agrees on that mess.

Maybe the press should ask HRH The One to explain his six different positions on Gaza.

Jaibones on September 29, 2008 at 4:17 PM

Well perhaps Sarah doesn’t know everything, but a good leader will admit that & get back to you. Realizing that a debate doesn’t allow for that, I’m comfortable with her admitting she may not know everything. But Biden is such a sloppy putz about what comes out of his pie hole, I’m sure she’ll be OK. There’s enough fodder on him out there she’s got to be bringing something to this.

“The only change you want, is the change left over after you have taken all of our money with you and Obama’s tax increases”
“Before you get elected you better figure out whether you are for or against coal plants in America…do you want Obama’s phone number?”
“The surge and the success you and Obama are now taking credit for; Did you get that idea from Gore and his internet?”
“While you spent your days fishing for more earmarks, I was working for a living fishing with my husband”
“Joe, I hope after this election you will have a chance to experience what it is like to work at a real job”
“Joe, women of the PTA make more decisions, and more important decisions everyday then you or Barack have made as senators”
“Joe, I never thanked you and Barack for your two votes each for the bridge, but I really think you should not have voted not to take that money and give it to New Orleans, that was a mistake, luckily you are supporting your own 13 million dollar bridge and you can correct your mistake”
“Joe, I think it was admirable that after the loss of your wife, you put your family aside and continued working for the senate”
“Joe, you have traveled a lot, but that still didn’t help you keep us out of economic trouble, and you were wrong on Iraq and the surge”

Palin’s answer, in full, was this: “Yeah, well especially in that region, though, we have to protect those who do seek democracy and support those who seek protections for the people who live there. What we’re seeing in the last couple of days here in New York is a President of Iran, Ahmadinejad, who would come on our soil and express such disdain for one of our closest allies and friends, Israel … and we’re hearing the evil that he speaks and if hearing him doesn’t allow Americans to commit more solidly to protecting the friends and allies that we need, especially there in the Mideast, then nothing will.”

It’s not an ‘out of the ballpark’ answer, but it’s hardly an endorsement of Hamas.

My read of it is that she did the politician thing of ignoring the question that was asked and giving the answer that you wanted to. They asked about Hamas….she answered about Iran. When she talks about supporting people that support democracy, it seems more likely that she’s supporting pro-democracy folks in Iran (especially given her next line is about Achmadinejad).

Since she states quite clearly that Israel is one of our closest friends and allies, I think it’s disingenuous to imply she supports a terrorist organization that is one of Israel’s greatest threats.

Again, her answer is right on. She knows where Gaza is, and she knows who borders it. Hamas and its allies are not interested in democracy — it’s interested in killing a bunch of other people who happen to reside in “the region” (aka the Israelis). The Atlantic is welcome to “pile on”, but her answer is just the kind of answer we need to negotiate with the non-Hamas segment of Gaza. Tarring them all just hardens the diplomacy later.

Are we seriously pinning our hopes on Biden saying something stupid? Even when he does, nobody cares because he has a D after his name.

I for one am Counting on Palin Winning not Biden losing.

Nah. It’s like watching football with a buddy that is always going ‘damn, we’re going to lose’ every time your favorite team gets behind.

No, it isn’t. It’s more like someone in the stand constantly throwing trash on the field at their own team.

I ditto that!

Well the campaign has tried the “hands on” approach with Palin, what harm can come from going with a “hands off” approach? Her job is to fire up the base and attract some women. She know’s how to do that better than McCain and his staff because they didn’t do that until they picked her. Let her play to her strengths, character, accountability, living up to campaign promises, and a obvious love of country.

How far into the debate before ‘Cuda’ drops the FDR on TV in 1929?

I don’t think AP’s comment on the Gaza question was out of line or a sign of any particular negativity. Her answer on Gaza was indecipherable, simply put.

This is true but also one should ask, how do you answer a question about the institution of democracy winding up with Hamas in charge? Its not an easy answer and there is no good one because democracy isn’t perfect, it depends on the people doing the voting. But you can’t just say that outright, you have to parse and dissemble until the answer is meaningless. Otherwise you make the Palestinians look like blood thirsty terrorists bent on the destruction of Israel. Oh, that’s right, they are, but you can’t say it. Maybe she should just say something like ‘Democracy isn’t perfect, Hitler was elected too.’

It occurs to me that Palin is ‘not ready for prime time’ in the estimation of the pundit and elite class because she isn’t good at one simple thing, that is: LYING.

If she could just lie and move around these questions better, like Bill Clinton, well then, she’d be a ‘polished politician’ ready for the top job at a moments notice.

America needs authenticity right now. Hopefully she’ll be the authentic Sarah Palin, tells it like it is and how she sees things and let’s the chips fall where they may.

FREE the SARAH! She’s so good. Let this politician go politicking!
