Video: SNL on Palin, Clinton, and the debate

Three good ones but the last is the killer so watch that if you’re strapped for time. In the interest of strict factual accuracy, I’m obliged to note that The One would not, of course, play the race card on Kim Jong-Il. He’d have a surrogate do it for him. As for Palin, if you think Fey’s grossly exaggerating the incoherence of her answer about the bailout, compare this clip to the transcript from the CBS interview. It’s nearly verbatim, with one or two extra absurd details tossed in for spice. Lowry’s right: If she comes off like this during the debate and late-night comics end up in a feeding frenzy, she’s going to carry that image with her not just for the rest of this campaign but into 2012.

Kind of sad that they have to rely on alumni (mostly) to play these roles.

NBC is toxic and is filled with pure slime. SNL has been a total loser for years but that dirtbag network finds it politically useful so they keep it going.

rplat on September 28, 2008 at 10:31 AM

I was quite surprised they went after Obama on Rezko. That was more biting satire than I would have expected.

frankj on September 28, 2008 at 10:32 AM

Couric’s question to Mrs. Palin about the bailout was so convoluted that even I, with a professional and graduate degree couldn’t understand it. Sarah should have asked her to repeat it, pick one thing out of it to respond to or refuse to answer it and go on with a philosphical muse about the “reinvestment program”. She has to learn to remake the questions and answer them on her terms. It is also perfectly all right to say “I don’t know”.

gracie on September 28, 2008 at 10:34 AM

AP, also recognize (IIRC) Couric’s original question about the bailout specifically mentioned health care and so Palin mentioned health care in her answer. But in the SNL skit Poehler’s question DIDN’T include health care while Fey’s reply which closely tracked Palin’s DID. The way they crafted the skit made Palin sound like the contestant in the South Carolina pageant, just pulling “health care” out of thin air in an answer to a question about the bailout, which was unfair. Of course, it was just a skit. Unfair nevertheless. It even has you supporting the image of Palin portrayed in the skit. And you’re no slouch. AFAIK.

AP writes: Lowry’s right: If she comes off like this during the debate and late-night comics end up in a feeding frenzy, she’s going to carry that image with her not just for the rest of this campaign but into 2012.

The media can portray Palin as Quayle II for all I care, as long as McCain beats Obama. The left hates Palin because she’s a conservative woman, and they will always hate her.

Paul-Cincy on September 28, 2008 at 10:38 AM

Is it just me or is the resemblance of Fey and Palin greatly exaggerated? I don’t see it.

Lowry’s right: If she comes off like this during the debate and late-night comics end up in a feeding frenzy, she’s going to carry that image with her not just for the rest of this campaign but into 2012.

I second that. I hope she is better prepared for the debates.

The moronic “late-night comics” will have their frenzy regardless of how she does in the debate. Remember, they are all Hollywood leftists that cringe and wet themselves at the sight of a conservative person.

Sarah be Sarah…wear your hair down on Thursday nite( so you don’t look like Tina Fey)…John McCain has your back and ours!!

gracie on September 28, 2008 at 10:45 AM

Tried to watch to see if there was a semblence of “fair game” comedy. My opinion, clearly designed to do more damage to McCain.

In a nutshell, they’re saying both party have poking points but the Republicans are just absurd to them. Absurd, much like wasting your time watching anything on NBC.

hawkdriver on September 28, 2008 at 10:45 AM

Heh, well I guess LAT is a transcript of a sort. Lowry is right. If our VP acts like what SNL’s or LAT’s caricature is, then yes, she’ll be a disaster. Fortunately their image is caricature. I’m pretty sure if John McCain went around proposing pie eating contests and naked debate, that image would stick with him till ‘12.

The debate clip was great, and Clinton was money.

Spirit of 1776 on September 28, 2008 at 10:45 AM

Palin seems to be too nervous in these interviews and so rehearsed by the McCain campaign that it strains her to answer questions. I am annoyed at how the McCain campaign is utilizing her.

Secondly, the SNL skit, with Tina Fey was quite sad because it mildly reflected how Palin’s interview went. I was disheartened. I know she is better than this.
The skit with the debate takes more shots at McCain than to Obama. The writers in SNL are so horrible that they avoided the bracelet incident. That is gold material!
Clinton is always funny.

Lorne Michaels needs new writers and actors. Too many missed opportunities for parodies and the acting is horrendous, with the exception of Poehler and Hammond.

Amen my friend.

I’ve made my pick and I’m behind that whole ticket the whole way. We’ll get enough criticism from the left, I don’t intend to eat their frenzy.

rplat on September 28, 2008 at 10:43 AM

True. However, if she does an awful job at the debate and the comics reinforce that in their monologues, it will ring true with the public. But if she does a good job the mean jokes won’t ring as true. For example, how many jokes have you heard about Bush being an idiot? He enforces this meme when he does bad interviews, although, I don’t think Bush is dumb. But if you ask someone if they think Bush is dumb the majority of the people will probably say “Yes.”

terryannonline on September 28, 2008 at 10:49 AM

It used to be intelligent, polite satire; now it’s just sophomoric insults and mocking.

RightWired on September 28, 2008 at 10:50 AM

Well, if nothing else, this will help to lower the expectations further. The MSM lowered them so much before Gov. Palin’s RNC speech that her magnificent debut really had impact. I doubt this debate will go anywhere near as well, but again they’ve painted her as such a lightweight idiot, that it’s hard not to beat that.

Jill1066 on September 28, 2008 at 10:51 AM

True. However, if she does an awful job at the debate and the comics reinforce that in their monologues, it will ring true with the public.

She’ll do fine. It’ll be live and unedited and she is talking to the people, not the press, which she does extremely well.

I hope Palin has learned the speaker’s trick of slightly rephrasing a question, “Ah, so what you’re asking is________” and then answering that question. Can’t do it constantly, but it does work if you slip it in a few times.

The Chicago references were quite surprising. That’s good, because I’ll bet most people don’t have any idea about Tony Rezko. Maybe one or two people might actually Google it and learn something.

Paul-Cincy on September 28, 2008 at 10:35 AM

It’s ‘just a skit’ as much as the democrats and the press ‘just hounded Dan Quayle with “Potatoe” when this was what was written on the card for him’. How many times did SNL parody John Kerry with an orange ‘oompah loompah’ face. Or how many times have SNL or any other comedy/media organization parodied Obama with ‘57 states’ or ‘ten thousand people died’ or Biden saying “When the stock market crashed, Franklin Roosevelt got on the television and didn ’t just talk about the princes of greed.” and make that a running gag for weeks. Such as ‘The Hidenburg blimp went down, and it was all over the internet within minutes’ or ‘I recall the moon landing, when at the same time, Sir Edmund Hillary conquered Mt Everest and Hillary CLinton was born. All at the same time’ or some such. How many times have they done that on their program?

There’s a difference between making a joke – and repeating the democrats smears against a republican candidate that they are stupid. And later the truth comes out (regarding Plain’s response) but the damage is done, and this lie about her answer – even if it’s ‘word for word’ will be continued. It’s like poison, that always stays in the mind, or like an ink stain, that has been splashed onto her, and the democrats and people such as in SNL will use to go beyond a simple comedy sketch.

TheBigOldDog on September 28, 2008 at 11:01 AM

I forget that mary’s name who plays Obama, but despite having the way Barry talks down, his tone is pathetic. Obama talks in a much deeper voice. In fact, perhaps I’m the only one to notice this, but Obama often sounds like he’s doing an impersonation of The Rock. At any rate, the high voice of this little turd takes a lot away from the sketch.

Ok people keep comparing her to Dan Quayle. I was young during those years. What was the big problem with Quayle?

terryannonline on September 28, 2008 at 11:02 AM

They have to destroy her. If she came out with a cure for cancer and world peace that would eviscerate her.

We had better start growing a brain. This is a war a war where the Dims want to kill off the Republican party once and for all.

The Dims believe that the old communist system of just one party is the best manner to be.

Don’t buy into the MSM’s denegration of Sarah. She’s helping plenty. Someone dragging down the ticket doesn’t pull in crowds of 70,000 at a campaign rally. She’s doing fine, while being nitpicked to death.

What the heck did John Edwards bring to the table? He had no record to speak of but for that of an ambulance chasing lawyer. Did the media say he would kill the Kerry campaign?
Of course not.

fogw on September 28, 2008 at 11:03 AM

terryannonline on September 28, 2008 at 11:02 AM

In the VP debate with Lloyd Bensten, Quayle tried to make the point that he was no more ‘inexperienced’ in politics as JFK was when he ran as president. Bensten (and all democrats, apparently) was greatly insulted that Quayle would dare to compare himself to their GOD JFK. And he said ‘I knew JFK, I was a friend of his, and you sir are no JFK’ and of course all the democrats in the audience all orgasmed at the same time with delight as how Bensten pwned him.

That, and the ‘potatoe’ incident thats so infamous. What did Quayle do that was actually wrong? ….. nothing.

wise_man on September 28, 2008 at 11:05 AM

Ok people keep comparing her to Dan Quayle. I was young during those years. What was the big problem with Quayle?

Heh. The correct answer: He was a Republican.

fogw on September 28, 2008 at 11:03 AM

You are right, of course. People are already divided in the pro/con camp. The theme been driven that she’s a drag etc, is just another attempt to dispirit the base. Part of the game plan is always to discourage the other sides turnout. But people really like her, so won’t be as successful as it has in the past.

Spirit of 1776 on September 28, 2008 at 11:08 AM

If she comes off like this during the debate and late-night comics end up in a feeding frenzy, she’s going to carry that image with her not just for the rest of this campaign but into 2012.

Fixed. If she tanks in the debate, the late night comics might back off. It could be the first time in history that comedians take it easy on a politician because they feel sorry for them.

The American people have eyes. They don’t need SNL, Letterman or Kathleen Parker to see that Palin is out of her league. The just need the CBS nightly news.

I don’t see why anyone would be talking 2012 even now. If McCain loses, she’s most likely done on the national scene.

There’s good news and bad news for Palin and the Republicans. The good news is that Palin has zero expectations for the debate. If she can just make it through without looking like an idiot, it’ll be a win for her. The bad news is that it looks like she’s capable of tanking in a debate unlike any politician that I can recall. People don’t vote for vice president. That’s the historic record. But another performance on par with the Couric interview by Palin could kill McCain’s campaign.

If our VP acts like what SNL’s or LAT’s caricature is, then yes, she’ll be a disaster. Fortunately their image is caricature.

As Allah points out, Fey’s response as Palin on the economy is almost verbatim. I have no doubt they did this on purpose. Fey ALMOST played Palin straight last night.

Tina Fey is on record saying she’s against Palin and so presumably supports Obama. She’s probably on record saying she supports Obama. Franken wrote the first Palin sketch. It’s like a surgeon operating on a patient he’d like to see die. Hardly seems fair.

Paul-Cincy on September 28, 2008 at 11:09 AM

I am confused as to why people are calling Fey a dead ringer for Palin. Palin is light years better looking than Fey. Fey is a semi attractive plain jane (nothing wrong with that at all) while Palin is a red hot uberbabe.

I have confidence and trust in Palin to hold her own and project compentence, fortitude, wisdom, and clarity.

However, I also don’t trust “handlers” making her into something she is not, thus ruining the Palin Persona and snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

I expect a person like Palin to stand up for herself and say “No! I will NOT pretend to be someone else. I am ME and I will be myself. If you want a packaged polotical product, go get Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama to run as Vice Presidential Candidate!”

As it is, Palin is being wasted.

terryannonline on September 28, 2008 at 11:02 AM

There was none. I actually met him in person when he visited El Salvador as the VP. He was and is an intelligent and articulate man. We let the media make us embarrassed over the potato gaff and the Chritian beliefs of his family. He became a caricature and we helped by our inability to support our own. The problem with Quayle will be the same problem with Palin if we don’t collectively get our conservative heads out of our butts and support her.

Every person put in front of the media will have a bad day. And as absurd as some of the gaffs Obama made in the debate and Biden makes in general (every freaking day), I defy you to find a blogroll where anyone of their supporters are voicing any concern. They beat us hands down by standing behind their candidates regardless.

Tickturds compared to losing!

hawkdriver on September 28, 2008 at 11:15 AM

Republicans are stupid – that’s the media narrative for every election. Bush was stupid, Reagan was dumb and out of touch, etc. If it won’t work with the top of the ticket, then they say the VP is dumb. God forbid Palin misspells a word, or gives them any ammo.

Show how he talks on and on and says nothing. And pauses while his brain churns until he comes up with something vague, general, and plausible, and palatable to most people. Paul-Cincy on September 28, 2008 at 11:09 AM

I think it’s pretty obvious that most the people on SNL are democrats and this plays into their act. Same could be said for the Daily Show and Colbert Report. If anyone like the Media Research Center would waste their time to do a detailed accounting of all the gags they do, I would guess that the majority of the spoofs on democrats are mild, and the attacks on republicans go to undermine their political positions, as SNL’s Fey did to Palin, doing her ‘verbatim’ response, while they change the question. This is comedy, and mocking, AND it’s also their seed that they want to plant into the minds of voters that this woman is who they believe her to be, an idiot. And they want their viewers, democrats to reinforce their preconceived belief, and independents and moderates who have yet to make their decision – to have in their mind that Palin is a clueless idiot who is a heartbeat away.

wise_man on September 28, 2008 at 11:17 AM

Typical right/left “coastie” bull trap.

Anyone that is not a ‘progressive/stalinist’ is just too stupid and vapid to understand the “big picture” or nuances of anything as important as their understanding of the world.

Hey SNL, I think a good skit would be seeing the Bambi “National Security Force” snatching the signs and posters out of the hands of people protesting the One on his speaking tour.

Now that would be a real laugh feast.

Over.

1GooDDaDDy on September 28, 2008 at 11:17 AM

Allah, do you have a transcript of the complete interview with Couric? Not just a transcript of the edited version shown on TV?

When someone posted the full transcript of the Gibson interview, it was clear they’d cut off a lot of her answers to make it look like she was giving simplistic soundbites.

Didn’t Hillary used to insist that interviews be shown in full – no editing?

Wethal on September 28, 2008 at 11:19 AM

Between Fey (who is quoted saying she does not want to have to play Palin beyond Nov. ) and Letterman’s rant on McCain, no Republicans, no less conservatives should be surprised by their portrayal by mainstream comics. We can take it. However, these attacks are having great influence on the great unwashed who will decide this election.

Using your logic, we can rule out Hillary ever running again, right? She’s a two-time loser. Lost the presidential bid to a rookie senator, then got dissed as VP by the same rookie senator. Let’s see how your loser theory holds up in 2012, or more likely 2009 – when Hillary begins her campaign anew.

BTW, if McCain loses it won’t hurt Palin one iota. Reagan qualities trump McCain qualities every time.

I don’t know what the hell she was talking about with healthcare reform but the rest is true: bailout should come with spending cuts and lower taxes (this is McCain’s position) and the trade issue is also a huge McCain issue. He’s always talking about that in terms of keeping the economy going. Yeah, it came out clumped in her answer and thus unclear, but she’s on message.

Another little-known fact from Lisa Schiffrin at NRO Corner. Bush41 chose Quayle without consulting James Baker. Baker was ticked, and when he spoke with the press about the pick, he was apparently rolling his eyes and giving off, “Why he picked this no-name guy without consulting me first, I don’t know” vibes. The media picked up on this meme, and Quayle’s “potatoe” gaffe fed it.

Does anyone remember the TC show “Herman’s Head?” Or even the recent Eddy Murphy film, or any of a dozen similar themed programs with the same idea.

SNL could have a sketch in which someone in Obama’s head would have a sound board, that would answer questions simply by pressing buttons. Just as you described. Example: here comes a complex question. The person in his head is sitting at a desk, feet up, reading the United trinity church’s bulliten from Hamams, and munching on a donut. In response, he reaches over to the ‘obama soundboard’ and presses some random buttons to make Obama say “uh, uh, uh, I, I, I, let me be clear, I’ve said this all along, uh, uh … and as I’ve said all along. Uh Uh Uh – let me repeat that…”

Baker was ticked, and when he spoke with the press about the pick, he was apparently rolling his eyes and giving off, “Why he picked this no-name guy without consulting me first, I don’t know” vibes. The media picked up on this meme, and Quayle’s “potatoe” gaffe fed it.

Wethal on September 28, 2008 at 11:23 AM

Well said, Wethal. This point should be repeated. The take home, imo, is that when party elders divide the party, then a theme can take hold, because it gives credibility. Otherwise a party stays tight together.

That’s why we are enjoy/encourage Clinton’s comments on Obama. And it’s why people like KParker (not remotely as important as Clinton) should write about things they understand instead of publicizing their insecurities.

Spirit of 1776 on September 28, 2008 at 11:28 AM

It’s amazing the 180 degree turn around here from the morning after her RNC speech and today. I still believe “they” are terrified of her and her family. She’s a breath of fresh air to me. Now Katie, Charles, and late night comic acts are forces to be feared. Remind me not to go into a war with a lot of you.

Marcus on September 28, 2008 at 11:29 AM

Allah, do you have a transcript of the complete interview with Couric? Not just a transcript of the edited version shown on TV?

When someone posted the full transcript of the Gibson interview, it was clear they’d cut off a lot of her answers to make it look like she was giving simplistic soundbites.

Didn’t Hillary used to insist that interviews be shown in full – no editing?

How about the SNL bit “Fun with RealAudio” where they splice together audio clips from a public figure and create a cartoon to go along with it? They could parody the heck out of Obama, given his speech patterns, and vacuous statements where he says nothing. But they would never do it.

Paul-Cincy on September 28, 2008 at 11:34 AM

Using your logic, we can rule out Hillary ever running again, right?

Palin is done if McCain loses because she is being exposed as not a serous candidate. She babbles and spews talking points like a broken computer. Some conservatives are facing reality — see Kathleen Parker.

Again, the good news is that Palin could get it together for the debate. I doubt she has the capacity to be anything beyond passable — especially after she didn’t improve in the Couric interview following the Gibson interview. If anything, she was worse. I think it’s clear that her ceiling is low and her basement is a dark abyss.

But if she gets through the debate OK, she could be a boost to the McCain ticket again. I think people do LIKE her, but right now, it looks like she’s in over her head.

And, in regard to Fey playing Palin straight… on her answer about the bailout plan specifically, she pretty much played it straight.

I agree. Ans it’s really sad when ‘party unity’ is called ’shilling for McCain’ or Palin. Because the people from wihtout and within who try to tear down our people, when we are at the last stage of the process, are all wanting the same thing. Say anything you want while the primaries are open. After the primaries, and the decision is now down to two people, it’s war. Pick a side. Bob Barr isn’t going to come to your rescue. I really get disgusted with ‘fair weather conservatives’ who seem to behave and seem to agree with the people who we want to be defeated.

wise_man on September 28, 2008 at 11:35 AM

Look, we will never win with the press or the media or hollywood.

I recall a visitor on the Chrissy Matthews show trying to make the point that Obama would be like Chamberlain during the pre-WWII years in the way he would deal with other terrorist adversaries. Matthews required the guys to try to articulate “exactly” what Chamberlain did to concede to the Nazis to deserve the reputation he got. Where most people generally think well, he made concessions to a very aggressive nation, Tingle Boy wouldn’t allow him to make any further commentary until explained Chamberlains stance exactly. So if he even if he said, “Well, it was because he didn’t object to the Nazis annexing the Sudetenland in Czechoslovakia.” You don’t think that he’d respect him any more do you? He’d just say, “Well actually, he got the reputation because he misunderstood the Sudenten Peoples acceptance of, bla, bla yada yada.” They hate us and think we’re hick idiots!

Who cares what these people think of us of our candidates?

hawkdriver on September 28, 2008 at 11:36 AM

Ha! Wolf Blizter just asked a guest if after this debate if Obama has this thing “locked up.” I thought Obama did a good job but I don’t think he did that good.

How sad is it that I heard from various conservatives about how the debate sketch was so amazingly “fair,” when basically it had three swipes at Obama and the rest was all about tearing McCain down? It’s disheartening to realize what crumbs of equality we’re willing to settle for because we’re so used to not getting any.

Mynuet on September 28, 2008 at 11:25 AM

True, but to me even before that he was made out in the media as though his entire family was just a bunch of goofy, unitelligent Christians. G Trudeau’s DB Cartoon portrayed him as a simple feather. But, he never really had a chance from the beginning. And you can’t tell me this isn’t exactly what they’re driving after now with Governor Palin.

Marcus, I have to agree with you. I would not like to have some of the people commenting on this blog covering my back in a tight spot. As this bailout nonsense shows, some, just some, have spines like well cooked noodles! I think Palin is great and will kick butt in the debate Thursday!

Vince on September 28, 2008 at 11:52 AM

Is it just me or is the resemblance of Fey and Palin greatly exaggerated? I don’t see it.

I agree, if you actually look past the hair style and glasses, there’s little resemblance in their facial structures. Fey’s is pointier, feral in a way. Palin has a more classic prettiness, for lack of a better word.

SNL has always been in the tank for Obama. They never criticized him, and always criticized Hillary. Even from years ago when Hillary had her “Halloween party” and the real Obama showed up.

I was surprised at the harder hits they actually took against Obama tonight. They’d never done something like that until now.

Ah Dave, to be the party that owns the media. You do speak with such confidence and I’m jealous. We Republicans can only dream about a skit where Obama tries to remember the name on his KIA bracelet and does a dreamscape fade where he’s back in Iraq with bombs going off all around him. When he snaps back out he claims he can’t remember because of PTSD. Or of Biden just babbling on like the village idiot about FDR on TV in 29 before he was President.

lansing quaker on September 28, 2008 at 11:56 AM

They did indirectly hit at him with their skit during the primary. It was the one in the debate in which Hillary got the impossible questions, and Obama got fawned over. It must have hit home, because at the next debate in Philly, Gibson and Stephanopolous went after Obama harder, incuding on Wright. Obama didn’t do too well.

Wethal on September 28, 2008 at 12:10 PM

The Fey/Pohler skit really wasn’t as funny to me as the first one they did; this one seemed to merely accentuate and parody their perception of Palin they want to project. It was a propaganda piece of how they want you to view her. Plus, not so many laughs.

The Obama/McCain debate was good for maybe a few chuckles, they wore the “suspend the campaign” line out after the first one, but a few chuckles there as both candidates got barbed about their actual weaknesses. I do find it notable that the Obama character does get to state the real Obama’s position so as to “get the message” out to the audience, while it seemed to me that McCain’s character speaks a parodied version of his position. Still, gotta expect that on SNL.

The third, with Bill Clinton commenting on the race, was Comedy Gold. The genius there is underscoring one of the more interesting aspects of this political season; how the political machine that is pushing Obama finally hit a brick wall when it crossed the Clinton Machine. They are officially scarier than the Mafia, much less Chicago politics, in my opinion.
