Video: Pelosi calls House GOP “unpatriotic”

Just the sort of rhetoric America needs to help these very delicate negotiations along. Compounding the nuance here is her reason for calling them unpatriotic: It’s not the fact that they’re holding out in the middle of a national emergency, it’s the fact that they neglected to show up for negotiations earlier in the week. Go ask Paul Kanjorski — Democrat Paul Kanjorski, who chairs the House Financial Services subcommittee on capital markets — whose fault that is. Then read Roll Call’s report about the Democrats sending eight negotiators to the table tonight when Paulson explicitly asked for two. We’re staring down the barrel of the worst disaster since Katrina or maybe even 9/11 and these people are playing douchebag psych-out games with each other. I can’t wait to see what this poll looks like next week.
The more I think about it, the more I have to believe Kristol’s wrong and things are (relatively) fine. They simply wouldn’t be jerking around this way if there really was an economic nuclear missile inbound. Click your ruby slippers together three times and repeat: They can’t be that stupid, they can’t be that stupid, they can’t be that stupid…

Here’s what HH actually wrote:
A Responsible Exercise of Representative Government
Posted by: Hugh Hewitt at 7:46 AM
The outline of the deal reached by legislators and the Administration represents not just the restoration of confidence and liquidity for Wall Street and thus a breakwater for Main Street, but also a reassuring return of purposeful legislating by the Congress. I expect not to like many of the details, but my party is in the minority on the Hill, and cannot expect to carry such matters. President Bush and his team have been acting responsibly throughout this crisis and continue to do so. The most talented and mature Republicans in the Congress –I single out Senator Jon Kyl as I interviewed him on Friday and can thus say with assurance that he has been working hard to resolve this incredibly complex and perilous situation– have been working to assure the package does what it has to do with minimum long-term disruptions to the market. From the account in the Wall Street Journal, Speaker Pelosi also played an important role worthy of her office in bringing the negotiations to a close. All Americans should thank her and the other responsible legislators for working to get this done before the markets opened on Monday.
As Bill Dyer notes below, John McCain has also been working hard to rescue the rescue, demonstrating a presidential temperament that will serve him very well if he is elected and must work with Democratic majorities. (For an account of Senator McCain’s conduct in the White House meeting, see my interview with White House Deputy Chief of Staff Joel Kaplan.) The next question is the the response of the House Republicans, which I hope follow that of the Senate GOP and the Administration. Some will not be able to sign on, I suppose, because they genuinely believe the package to be a disaster. Any sincerely held view should be respected, but I think the majority of the GOP House members will recognize that this is one of those rare moments where they must act as the Democrats did after 9/11 and through the following year –they must act to shape but not obstruct the will of the democratically-elected majority and the president in the course and aftermath of a crisis.
Such episodes as the one we are going through are always watched closely around the globe, and nowhere more so than in emerging democracies like Iraq’s. If, as appears likely, the two parties which are on opposite sides of a deep ideological divide can work together to resolve a crisis and then immediately return to throwing hammers at each other for five weeks, this will be as great an example of the wonders of our system that can be imagined.

These losers are counting on the fact that most Americans will simply shake their heads in disgust, and go about their business. All Americans should rise up and demand accountability; this is what politicians do to us, turn about is fair play…
Keemo on September 28, 2008 at 9:04 AM
Isn’t this sort of like the left and DDT, an African child dies every 30 seconds, so says Obaam, the fix is DDT, the enviro-nut leftists say no. Markets crash because of government intervention, the fix is more government intervention.
The left only has one song.
This woman looks sick, I guess that’s what happens when you are 68, only four years younger than the “too old” McCain, so many Botox injections, finally it reaches the brain.
You look at the Democrat leadership today, and you have to say to yourself, Oh this is why communism failed.

Nice words. But, depending on the content of this agreement to spend our cash, the “revolt” may be back on.
350 Billion up front. Eating the taxpayer funded elephant one bite at a time.
I am not buying the emergency hype, especially a 12:30 am agreement slipping in Sunday morning. It stinks.
Benjamin9 on September 28, 2008 at 9:07 AM
People have no idea what is going on. This bailout will do nothing but prolong the crash and make it much worse by debasing the value of the dollar. Congress cannot fix this. Housing prices are going down 38-43% people are going to lose all their equity but that would not be bad enough, except they keep printing money making this worse and worse.
You need to stop spending money, pay down your debt, cut your expenses by at least 20% and save money but diversify it with precious metals and keep a lot of it in a safe in your house. Finally stock up on food, water and ammunition. Welcome to the new America and a 20% lower standard of living.
Poptech on September 28, 2008 at 9:08 AM
Agreed. But, the congress is well aware of how angry the masses were. I heard yesterday that they received more calls than when we crashed the phone system during the Amnesty debacle.
NOW, we need to flood their emails and phone banks with DEMANDS that if they are going to spend our tax money, we want heads on sticks….
Chris Dodd and Barney Frank, please come to the front office….

You might want to consider re-reading the history of the French Revolution, Limerick. We DO NOT want to go down that path.
The children of every revolution devour their own parents. In our case, it took about 230 years for that to finally happen, as the political descendants of the Founding Fathers gnaw on their bones today.
And I don’t mean to be pedantic, but “wherefore” does not mean “where,” it means “why.” Just sayin’, is all.
ManlyRash on September 28, 2008 at 9:16 AM
But seriously, we ALL need to call. At least we can try to get accountability on this. They are spending OUR money and everyone is angry about it. If we just sit here silently, they will believe all is fine. Okay, bail them out, but dammit, it is time for someone to pay. INCLUDING THOSE SCUMBAGS IN CONGRESS!
Call Fax Email and drive them crazy. Okay, crazier than they already are.
HornetSting on September 28, 2008 at 9:17 AM

There’s no doubt that some states are going to start realizing that the Federal government is not an entity they want to be associated with. I thought it would take granting amnesty and citizenship to people who hate America for this to happen, but the fact that our federal government is running itself so quickly into insolvency could be the trigger.

I wonder how long it will be before people in western Sydney are going to lose their houses in large numbers?
Sydney has by far the greatest exposure to Wall Street and the US banking system than any other Australian city. Most of Australia will be spared the immediate impact fortunately but the effects will be felt nationwide eventually.

I read an interesting article yesterday… they appear to be operating on a new theory that the supply of money is infinite… since it’s backed by the “full faith and credit”, the government can print as much as they want. They actually believe that! You must. Otherwise, how can you toss a cool trillion dollars into an economy where the total of M2 (used to monitor and estimate inflation) is a little over 7 trillion.

Brad Sherman, D-CA.
HornetSting on September 28, 2008 at 9:31 AM
Unfortunately, the economic/financial debacle makes it more likely that a bailout on illegals (amnesty and citizenship for them) will pass, since taking care of that problem properly (by kicking the illegals out) will hit the economy. Remember, the reasons given for the original amnesty was that we couldn’t afford (economically and “morally”) to get rid of the illegals. It will be just another bailout, and they’ll argue that our economy needs it.
As to withholding services from the illegals, I wouldn’t hold my breath. Our government would rather see American citizens on the street than illegals.
Very, very sad stuff.
progressoverpeace on September 28, 2008 at 9:32 AM
Yup. If things proceed on the present course, it won’t be long before several of the contiguous red states form a 2nd Continental Congress and begin drafting a resolution calling for independence from the United States.
ManlyRash on September 28, 2008 at 9:33 AM
I’m still angry that the Govt is renegotiating principal as well as interest on these loans. As the rest of us lose equity, some of the clowns who caused this (buy house no down, cash out some quick equity, walk away) now get a second bite at the apple with a painless “offer they can’t refuse”? Sure – I realize that some of my equity is “artificial”, but try telling that to my tax assessor in a blue city.

There is hope, but it will take the most ingenious NEW ideas about finance and monetary systems in the history of the world; something that no one in the world has even had an inkling of, yet. Something like the development of nuclear technology in the early 20th century that changed the whole world. Where are Einstein, Von Neumann, Szilard, etc. when we really need them?

After the breakup of the U.S. you can expect that AZ, NM and most of southern California will more or less revert back to Mexico.
Northern CA, WA and OR will remain as non-contiguous parts of the Old U.S., which will consist of th entire northeast down to MD in addition to MI, MN, IL, WI and, possibly, IA. Florida may very well split in two, with the portion of the state south of Ocala remaining with the O.U.S. and the rest seceding to join the New U.S., which will be comprised of the old conferderacy plus all of the Plains states, including NV and CO.
Texas will likely be the anchor state of the new republic. HI will remain with the O.U.S and AK will either proclaim its own independence or join the red state secession.
Then again, I could be wrong. Whatever happens, be comforted that it will be awful.
ManlyRash on September 28, 2008 at 9:45 AM
I would think that anybody with any money in the market will take advantage of a market that may rally or may hold even next week to SELL SELL SELL and put their money somewhere else. I have a good friend that sold a resonably substantial portfolio over a week ago and put it in t-bills… he’s staying out for a minimum of several months to be sure this is over. He said he may get back in when he sees 7000 or so. As for me, the market has always been voodoo and a black hole that consumes money every time I try.

If you believe the Karl Marx comment that people being able to vote themselves part of the pie will ultimately result in socialism (and it appears to be happening in each passing year), then the no taxes paid, no vote approach appears to be the only thing that can stop it. If that happened, there would be… what… maybe 2-3 blue states at most.
Guns, ammo! Take DC hostage and put them on trial! That’s all mental masturbation and will never happen. But, an effective political strategy does need to come about and in fairly short order. Some ownership of mass media outlets would be a good place to start. That ownership needs to be by a group of conservative types… not a Murdoch type that will play both sides of the fence. Form an organization for this purpose… a holding company. Do not trade on any exchange. Sell ownership privately to conservatives. Buy targeted outlets. Preach conservatism.
There I go with my own mental masturbation…. sorry.

Perhaps not even that, as there would be no income tax. The current U.S. constitution is a nearly perfect set of instructions for a nearly perfect system of goernment. One or two tweaks here and there based on 200 years of experience and we’ll be fine. The trick is to keep the federal government small and limited in power.

Gak. Watching Fox News Sunday – had to turn it off after John Kerry tried to make it seem it was Obama and the democrat’s idea to make the government insure the loans, not buy them, and charge a fee if the money wasn’t paid back in 5 years. After that, he claimed that this was the sort of thing it was going to be until ‘politics entered the debate’ i.e. until republicans added politics to the wonderful democrats working on behalf of the people and for the people – not themselves.

I’m not sure how doable that would be, but if there were no income taxes then the vote would have to hinge on property ownership, with a certain amount of equity in it. Whatever the case, universal sufferage is a recipe for disaster.
That is the foundation that we have gotten so far away from. I’m surprised the leftists haven’t tried to scrub the world’s memory of the existence of those documents, yet. They figure it’s easier to just ignore them, so far. I keep coming back to the amazing poll that only 19% of BHO supporters think that SCOTUS decisions should be based on the Constitution.

Well, thank God for small favors, I guess.
Socialism, open borders, voter fraud, corruption, terrorism, creeping Sharia, nuclear threats, media collusion…the perfect storm indeed.

Nope, this gang is NOT that stupid. They’re just continuing the Cloward-Pavin Strategy of Manufactured Crisis set firmly in motion by the 1995 revision of the CRA (as pushed by ACORN).
The “Cloward-Piven Strategy” seeks to hasten the fall of capitalism by overloading the government bureaucracy with a flood of impossible demands, thus pushing society into crisis and economic collapse.
The Strategy was first elucidated in the May 2, 1966 issue of The Nation magazine by a pair of radical socialist Columbia University professors, Richard Andrew Cloward and Frances Fox Piven. Cloward and Piven were inspired by radical organizer [mentor to Hillary and Barak] Saul Alinsky. From an excellent article: — Barack Obama and the Strategy of Manufactured Crisis, by James Simpson, in The American Thinker

Check out Fox again…they’re about to discuss Acorn and fraud in CA, I mean voting fraud….not Ahnold.

They’re currently trying to float the insane idea that
Heh…I predicted it – all of it. Here’s more: the meme will take hold coutesy of the Drive-By media, which will pound it into the heads of the electorate from now until election day. When they go into the boot on Nov 4, the Idjit voters will be softly chanting the meme they learned: Democrats good, Republicans bad.
You won’t. Wouldn’t be bi-partisan, don’tcha know.
Nah. The scumbags will be hailed as heroes. Those who tried to stop this madness will be vilified as traitors.
Welcome to the Fall of the Republic. Make yourself at home. May I take your hat and coat?
ManlyRash on September 28, 2008 at 10:20 AM
I heard that too. From Kerry. I wouldn’t be surprised if all the democrats will be out today and for the next weeks spinning this tale to the media – and doing it so often that they want this slime of a lie to stick on the wall by repeatedly throwing it up there again and again

Ugh…my eyes…my eyes…STFU GORE!

If we didn’t give illegal aliens drivers licenses in NM, thanks to Bloated Bill, we wouldn’t have this problem. When you apply for driver’s licenses, you are automatically registered to vote…..

Yes and no. The more decentralized the government, the less negatively impactful universal sufferage becomes. A weak federal government would, of necessity, compel the states to shoulder much of the burden of governance. They, in turn, would spread that burden to counties and communities where it belongs. On that level, the people – as in We the People – truly have control, because they can see firsthand the impact of their legislative policies.
Hence the need for a Second Continental Congress. Oh, and there is one other thing I’d bring: the DVDs for the HBO series on John Adams, so the delegats would have something other than football to watch between sessions.

You are absolutely right, and progressoverpeace is out of ideas as badly as he[?] is out of capital letters. I’ll have to see if he[?] is for adding this barely needed burden on an already out of control budget.
From the tiny bit of info leaking out it would appear that this debacle is due to people having gotten mortages without the resources to pay for the mortgages they agreed to that is creating a huge segment of our current problem.
Never discussed are simple solutions to that, and I can already think of one with a double edged blade. Take those properties and use those for either wind or solar power generating farms. I would bet my tax refund that many of those unpaid-for properties are adjoining, and that would allow for decent sized power production facilities.
Who knows? Perhaps a few of these tracts would be large enough to place a nuclear power plant on them.
How is that for tackling 2 problems with 1 well placed stroke?

I wonder if somebody could corelate,in Democratic Districts,
oh I dunno, like say in Obama’s Organizing thuggery area,
how many people didn’t have homes and then, after Janet
put the cold chill against the lending companys, shazam a
dramatic increase in homes to minorities!:)
Say like, how many homes were for sale,Bill comes into office
and then in some miricle, homes were being bought up left,
right and center!!:)

Very true, but universal sufferage will inevitably lead to the progressive centralization and growth of the Federal entity, at least that’s how I see it.
Yes, but I think that we would just get the same dynamics for each state government as we have for our federal government, now. Unrestricted growth of the government guided by the poorest and most ill-informed of the populace, who will always make up a large part of the population.
Absolutely.
