Video: Pelosi calls House GOP “unpatriotic”

Just the sort of rhetoric America needs to help these very delicate negotiations along. Compounding the nuance here is her reason for calling them unpatriotic: It’s not the fact that they’re holding out in the middle of a national emergency, it’s the fact that they neglected to show up for negotiations earlier in the week. Go ask Paul Kanjorski — Democrat Paul Kanjorski, who chairs the House Financial Services subcommittee on capital markets — whose fault that is. Then read Roll Call’s report about the Democrats sending eight negotiators to the table tonight when Paulson explicitly asked for two. We’re staring down the barrel of the worst disaster since Katrina or maybe even 9/11 and these people are playing douchebag psych-out games with each other. I can’t wait to see what this poll looks like next week.
The more I think about it, the more I have to believe Kristol’s wrong and things are (relatively) fine. They simply wouldn’t be jerking around this way if there really was an economic nuclear missile inbound. Click your ruby slippers together three times and repeat: They can’t be that stupid, they can’t be that stupid, they can’t be that stupid…

McCain and Obama will be absent from the vote for “family emergencies” each will say it was the rep/dem idea to pass the bill. They were for the taxpayer….etc.

That’s OK, actually.
If they get Wall Street to fund some of the bailout with new fees, that’s a good thing. The insurance thing wasn’t great, from what I heard from people who do this stuff for a living.
If ACORN is gone, and it’s not terrible otherwise, it might be a good thing.

Sounds like the economy here until the Dems “affordable housing” loan program sunk the ship.

ok let’s look on the bright side. Markets rally, economy off the front page, chevez and Putin still out there will more than likely not keep quite for next 5 weeks. Iran still out there. economy starts to pick up maybe? gas comes down and McCain gets to run against do nothing Congress.
Town hall debate on oct 7, VP debate on OCt 2. Still close race. Could get a McCain president and a rep house out of this.

Freakin’ rule breakin’ scummy Dems:
For nearly three hours in the afternoon, Conrad and other lawmakers met with Paulson around a massive table in Pelosi’s conference room under an ornate portrait of Abraham Lincoln. Among lawmakers, Democrats outnumbered Republicans nine to two, an imbalance that so irritated Paulson that he called and complained to Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.), according to three GOP sources familiar with the call.
Reid told Paulson he would not pull any of his colleagues out of the meeting. A Reid spokesman, Jim Manley, said: “If the secretary doesn’t like it, that’s just too bad, because he is going to need the help of each and every one of them to sell the president’s plan to the Democratic caucus and the American people.”
Although I’m sure glad a deal got done, I’ll be checking for ACORNS under the tree asap.

They’re saying $250billion upfront, then another $150 if that’s okay, then “possible” $350 that congress gets to review before. Also, something about no more than $50 bil/month.

–Lawmakers want Treasury to receive the authority in tranches, receiving $250 billion immediately and another $100 billion if needed as certified by the president. The remaining $350 billion would be subject to a Congressional vote, giving lawmakers the opportunity to vote to rescind the funds.
But a Senate aide familiar with the discussions said Treasury is pushing for a larger initial authority, likely around $500 billion.

Don’t wait people. These scum will not tell you it’s going to crash. They fear runs on the banks. Even though our accounts are covered by the FDIC, how long will it be before we get our money? and the house reps would have good reason to go back to their districts and campaign like crazy for McCain…he listened to them, and got their feet in the door so they didn’t just get steamrolled 100%, which is what Bush and Paulson had lined up last week.
Like I said, my dad told me the liquidity crisis was real, and something needed to be done, and if it was done even moderately well, the gvmt would make money in the long run.
Hopefully the delay (that the dems screamed and stamped their feet over, and blamed all on McCain, right?) caused improvements in the package….
and hopefully a few voters will get the slap in the face that maybe the fact that McCain got in the way of passing what the dems and Bush admin were pushing so hard last week, well, gosh, maybe that was something that McCain did right.

funky chicken on September 28, 2008 at 1:42 AM
I read today that 500 billion is about 1/4 of what is actually needed.
This rush to pass a $700 billion bailout is the sign of the irrational. I have a feeling that the bailout shills are those who are up to their ass in bad decisions. They remind me of the people who propagated this mess. Predatory loan officers etc, who prayed on uninformed borrowers. If we let the market correct itself, those people are out of jobs. And you know what? I don’t care. I invest wisely and conservatively. I don’t live beyond my means and I don’t live off the ignorance of others.
The shills bet and lost. Grow up and take your lumps. And if you ask nice, I might share a case of canned food with you.

csdeven, if you are LDS, don’t you always have a stocked emergency closet on hand? I’m not making fun, I think it’s a good idea, actually. It’s just your tying it to this bailout bill is silly. If the bailout passes, it will stabilize the markets, so rushing to pull all your money out of the bank and investments right now is self-destructive. That’s what I’m teasing you about.
funky chicken on September 28, 2008 at 1:50 AM
Really? Food wont grow? I have lots of land to grow food on. I will sell that food to the bailout shills. IF they have money. And if they try to steal from me, I will shoot them.
Irrespective of how bad it gets, money will always have a value when the markets level out. We aren’t headed into pre-history days. People need to be prepared to ride out the crash. I am. You obviously are not. There is no reason for you to get angry and nasty about it. Your lack of preparation doesn’t make me angry at you.

That is an assumption that most financial experts do not guarantee. It may do so for a day, week, or month. But 700 billion is not near enough to cover the 1.7 trillion in bad mortgages are out there. Add to that the credit cards, school loans, and auto loans, and it’s clear that this is a money pit and it has no bottom.
Look at the last several months. EVERY bailout that has been authorized was supposed to stabilize the markets. They did…for a while. Now here we are again.
Financial experts are not sure what to do. SO, as has been mentioned, I will look out for me and mine. And anyone who doesn’t like it ought to be concerned about them and theirs and cease worrying about me.

Agreed. The government should turn a deaf ear to the pleas for 700 billion dollars and let the weak companies fail so that stronger companies can feed off their corpses and start the process of stabilizing the markets.
Every insolvent company has their hand out because the government started offering the tax payers teat to save them. Once they start this cycle of dependency, it will never end.

Reduce the Bailout!!!!!, printing more money will make our dollar weaker, driving the Oil futures higher, thus not only making US pay for the $700 Billion but also making us pay for inflated Oil prices and everything that goes along with that.. higher gas prices, higher food prices, everything you buy at the stores, everything in our economy is tied to Oil.. and Oil is tied to the strength of the US Dollar.
So, what we need to do, Kill or extremely limit the bail out at least cut it into or 1/3 or 1/4 of the size it is now.. 250 Billion maybe.. let the markets work
Then, We need to Totally Ramp UP ALL Oil(Including ANWR, and all the natural gas),Oil shale, Clean Coal, and More New Nuclear Power plants Here in the United States, More Refineries, more wind, solar, new technologies, conservation ALL OF IT.. the ALL OF THE ABOVE PLAN.
Lower Corporate Tax dramatically and drastically(that will increase investment from home and abroad, create new business and create more jobs)
Lower the Capital Gains Tax again that will increase investments and create more revenues..
Increasing the Energy sector and new development will create Lots of new jobs, and new investment, people will start to invest in raw materials(because things need to be built), this would be be a huge boom industry and would get us off of foreign energy and would held our markets all at the same time..
Also, the RAW materials like STEEL used for the New Oil Rigs, and New Nuclear Power plants, and Wind Turbines could be a way to reopen the Steel Mills( or more could be built/upgraded) across the midwest that have recently shut down.. (thus more jobs)
things need to be built, Oil Rigs for off and onshore(US Steel, US Mining), Nuclear Power Plants(US Steel, US Mining), Wind Turbines(US Steel, US Mining) US Engineering..
AND ALSO CUT GOVERNMENT WASTEFUL SPENDING
How to stop if from happening again, what to do now
Get rid, of the NINJA(No Income No Job No Asset) Loans, That’s not compassionate it’s irresponsible, and predatory. (It should be a crime)

And I say, IRONICALLY, YES IT IS.
I hope Republicans take this and hammer the Democrats into the ground for their near-traiterous positions (be it anti-oil-drilling, anti-War-support, etc etc).
It is time to hold them accountable by publically making their “projection” psychosis visible for the American public to see.

This is like having a derelict brother in law who rings up $100,000 on loans and credit cards, he asks you to loan him the money to bail him out, and you LET him keep his credit cards. We’re push brooming the problem to another day.
malkinmania on September 28, 2008 at 6:40 AM
My question is how many taxpayers have been burning the wires via emails, phones calls, and the like, letting their Senators and Congressional reps know just what THEY think of this idiotic bailout proposal and who THEY think is to blame for all of this in the first place?
People like Pelosi have to know that there is a point where people are going to tolerate stuff like this only so far, until there is going to be a breaking point. And that breaking point may wind up coming sooner than people like Pelosi think.
It may come as soon as Election Day.

That’s brilliant.

From the looks of the deal thus far, the House GOP has done a great job of getting the poison out of this thing. And keeping in mind that Pelosi could have passed this without them, kudos are deserved. We should also be glad that Pelosi and Reid are cowards that want nothing more than to not be held responsible for the destruction they cause.

So…..when will Barney Frank and Chis Dodd be frog marched out of their offices?

As I understand it, they took him to the hospital because he had a seizure. I once took care of someone diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. Seizures are pretty common in these patients. Having one does not mean death is imminent. Also, I saw some video of Kennedy walking out of the hospital. The fact that he’s still able to walk around on his own indicates that he’s not in the final stage yet. Kennedy could still be here this time next year.

AND when you sell his stuff to recoup your losses, he has a buddy buy it back for pennies on the dollar.
This is why these failing companies cannot be allowed to survive. They will take the solvency we provide for them and go in the back door and buy failed asserts for pennies on the dollar. They turn a profit and we are stuck with bad paper.

9% approval rating, and she calls others “unpatriotic.”
ToddonCapeCod on September 28, 2008 at 4:04 AM
That’s the dirty little secret the MSM and Democrats won’t allow to be discussed. Pelosi & Reid are so far out of the mainstream, they have taken Congress approval ratings to record lows. Talk about having your head stuck in the ground!
Obama is to the left of Reid & Pelosi, the man is a radical Liberal. Exactly why I don’t believe these polls that have Obama up in this race. An Obama Presidency will give Democrats majority in all (3) branches of government. If the people wanted this to take place, then why is the approval rating for Congress at 9%?
Not buying the bullshit!

If I’m not mistaken, and I hope I am, Hugh Hewitt is actually saying we should thank Pelosi??? Please someone correct me if I’m wrong. Here’s part of what he says
“… From the account in the Wall Street Journal, Speaker Pelosi also played an important role worthy of her office in bringing the negotiations to a close. All Americans should thank her and the other responsible legislators for working to get this done before the markets opened on Monday….”
So I’m suppose to thank this woman after she called me “unpatriotic”
