Video: Pelosi calls House GOP “unpatriotic”

posted at 9:21 pm on September 27, 2008 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | regular view

Just the sort of rhetoric America needs to help these very delicate negotiations along. Compounding the nuance here is her reason for calling them unpatriotic: It’s not the fact that they’re holding out in the middle of a national emergency, it’s the fact that they neglected to show up for negotiations earlier in the week. Go ask Paul Kanjorski — Democrat Paul Kanjorski, who chairs the House Financial Services subcommittee on capital markets — whose fault that is. Then read Roll Call’s report about the Democrats sending eight negotiators to the table tonight when Paulson explicitly asked for two. We’re staring down the barrel of the worst disaster since Katrina or maybe even 9/11 and these people are playing douchebag psych-out games with each other. I can’t wait to see what this poll looks like next week.

The more I think about it, the more I have to believe Kristol’s wrong and things are (relatively) fine. They simply wouldn’t be jerking around this way if there really was an economic nuclear missile inbound. Click your ruby slippers together three times and repeat: They can’t be that stupid, they can’t be that stupid, they can’t be that stupid…

We are so screwed..McCain where are you.. this bill must not happen in its present form. remove Acorn, remove the 100% taxpayer bailout.

I would just anyone with a couple bucks to go short the market if this bill is passed in its present form after the relief rally. We are going down. Say hello to President Obama.

Smart people can still do stupid things.

Don’t disagree. However, if a man gives me his money to invest, i will take much more care of it than i would with my own money. Our “leaders” don’t seem to grasp that concept. Mistake or not, they don’t deserve to be in their positions.

Just got back from dinner with my dad. CPA, very successful Big 3 auto dealer. Here’s what he said:

1. liquidity crisis is real
2. it will take taxpayer dollars, but he reiterated that it will make the gvmt money in the long run
3. 700 billion is way too much money
4. Bush is a moron for letting his Goldman Sachs alumni convince him that it would cost 700 billion (Paulson and Bolton)
5. the sky will not fall if negotiations take until Tuesday or Wednesday, but it would be better if they get it done by Monday

interesting side note: WaMu failed because, in his words, they decided to become “the Wal-Mart of mortgage banks” and built lots of offices in “the ghetto” and made loans to people who could and would never pay them back. He said it was a terrible plan that was bound to fail, and (surprise!) it failed.

FWIW

I am so sick and tired of these idiots in Washington. bush is a moron. He lost the Congress because he could control his spending, he almost lost the war because he wouldn’t put enough troops in, now he is going to lose the economy because he doesn’t want to fight for free market principles because he wouldn’t even no where to begin. bush is and always has been a RINO and has done more to destroy Reagan than all the dems combined. I didn’t know the Bush family hated Reagan with such a passion.

Democrat House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that congressmen who were trying to protect the taxpayer in the bailout bill were unpatriotic.
I ask you, what’s unpatriotic… standing up for the taxpayer or actively and aggressively undercutting our military while they’re in the middle of a war?

Not at all. I’m assuming he is doing something. Behind the scenes perhaps. If he is, wonderful.

But he’d get a lot more mileage from this if he’d be out in front of it, not behind the scenes.

If the Republican plan is passed – with a far smaller taxpayer exposure and McCain has been the head man, don’t you think he’d get benefit of that? Especially when contrasted against Obama out there campaigning instead of working on this.

These are people’s jobs and pension plans and life savings that we could be talking about here.

George W Bush is still POTUS until January, 2009. McCain used his political capital to get the house GOP guys into the discussion. If McCain hadn’t come back, would they have had anybody with that much pull going to bat for them? Any more blatant activism against the Bush Administration’s negotiations at this time would be stupid and wrong.

I think the voters and tax payers of this country would accept the plan if it included building a new prison in the desert of Nevada, waaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyy out there, that has one level above ground for processing, and 300 stories below ground for prison cells.

Think of an upside down triangle, with arms…….

………. in the depths of the hole, with the feces, urine, and every other bodily fluid that would rain down upon them, would be Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, Rahm Emanuel, and of course Jamie Gorelick.

Nor do I. I’m calling it how I see it.

I said it was a mistake and stupid for McCain to suspend his campaign. Everyone disagreed with me. Now its pretty much accepted to be a dumb move.

Unless; he can pass this bill and get the credit for it.

I feel like much of Bush’s problems over the past 8 years has been his inability to communicate his beliefs and get people to agree with him. McCain is having this same problem. Bush wouldn’t go out and talk to reporters. McCain needs to do that. Face the enemy head on. Democrats do. Why can’t Republicans?

One Republican said that the message from government officials is that “the economy is dropping into the john.” He added: “We could see falls of 3,000 or 4,000 points on the Dow [the New York market that currently trades at around 11,000]. That could happen in just a couple of days.

“What’s being put around behind the scenes is that we’re looking at 1930s stuff. We’re looking at catastrophe, huge, amazing catastrophe. Everybody is extraordinarily scared. It’s going to be really, really nasty.”

phronesis on September 28, 2008 at 12:01 AM

Republicans are already being blamed. That’s inevitable. So if you are going to be blamed if it fails; make sure you get the bill you want passed.

They deserve the blame. The created and supported these GSEs all alongside the democrats. Neither party is immune. And neither party is now discussing a plan that will actually fix this mess. See what the two party system got ya? Thing about that when you go to the polls.

Partially. But look, if McCain can win the election, there is the chance (however remote) that the GSE’s can be revamped or shut down.

If Obama wins, it’ll never happen.

That’s why Republicans/McCain need to get their bill passed. Make sure McCain gets all the credit for it. And get people on your side. Win the election and fix the problem.

lorien1973 on September 28, 2008 at 12:01 AM

I see its back to “We’re all gonna die, Game Over man, Obacky is going to be President!”

I don’t think we’ll all die – but I think the jerkoff will probably pull it off because all of the “Repubs are Bushilters” and deserve to lose their life savings – no matter what – we are EVIL – and McCain is just another representative of all that is wrong with the world.

I’ve been so optimistic for so long, but there comes a time when REALITY sort of smacks you in the kisser. And I think that between the MSM and the Obamamessmerizement – what can you do?

I’m seriously concerned. Everything I’m reading sux.

It’s my husband’s 59th birthday today and maybe it’s because I’ve had too much wine to celebrate- but given his age (and mine) – I just don’t want everything we’ve worked so hard for to be teetering thanks to a suit and his cronies.

It is obvious what the Democrats were doing, but when I think of the hell they raised over Schiavo or Dubai or whatever I can’t help but think..why weren’t they doing something about this? Did they just not see it? Did they think it was manageable.

Why revamp a system to underwrite loans to people that do not have the means to pay for them? That is insane!
They are never going to do it, becuase the banking lobby has paid them way to much money to do anything that will actually sove this issue. The $700 Billion os just gonna keep this cash cow rising along for just a little while longer.

BUSH 1 lost because of READ MY LIPS No NEW TAXES.

i don’t blame BUSH 2 for everything that has happened. I blame him for destroying the rep party that I knew. Like ZELL said I didn’t leave the party the party left me. BUSH’s compassiate conservatism is nothing but liberalism in drag. I do blame BUSH for no veto in 6 years, run away spending, not fighting for conservative leadership postions in Congress, not winning the war quickly. there is NO reason that the USA should still be fighting two wars after 7 years. We conquered the entire world in less time. I blame Bush for the immigration problem, the lack of an energy plan, and a lack of regulation on FM and FM. Yes McCain and Bush both called for regualtion but they had the majority of COngress. If it was as important as they say it was they should have made it a priority. bush caved on everything except the WOT. Which I give him high marks on exccept for fighting the dam hot wars. Whatever happened to cruching your enemy, driving them before you and hearing the wailing of their women. Bush pussyfooted aroundin iraq insteade of destroying it. Like FDr and Truman I don’t care about civilians during wartime. They had years to rise up against Sadamm. they liked him at least the majority did. Same with the Irainian. Oh….the hell with it…what is done is done but BUSH is not a conservative.

Yes, the Oloser might win it, then again he might not; alternating between shitting our pants and seeing rainbows everywhere is stooopid.

Half of the ‘experts’ out there are saying do something now or its Great Depression time, the other half are saying the plan is so dumb it will exacerbate the problem. The reality probably lies somewhere in-between.

The libs and their media shill whores would be raking the GOP over the coals no matter WHAT they did, so the Repubs might as well fight the good fight. If they go down swinging, fine, at least they swung; I’m tired of watching these DFL bitches ruin my country.

Bishop on September 28, 2008 at 12:08 AM

Little curious here-the Dems claim enough votes to ram their legislation through regardless, it’s claimed.
Do they?

irongrampa on September 28, 2008 at 12:07 AM

On strictly party line votes without a senate fillibuster, yes. But some are balking at the bill.

phronesis on September 28, 2008 at 12:09 AM

irongrampa:

I wonder about that. I think Nancy promised the black caucus too much and some other people too much and then found out that everybody had some problem with some part of it. Too appease on faction, was to lose another. And she ends up stuck.

Terrye on September 28, 2008 at 12:11 AM

On Oct. 19th 1987 the stock market fell 22%! In 1 1/2 years it had regained all of the loss and more and then began it’s long run upwards.

If the Dow falls 3000 to 4000 points so what? People invest in things they don’t understand and buy homes they can’t afford. They think they are smarter than everyone else and I have no sympathy for them.

Vote the politicians out for failing completely at their jobs and for robbing us blind. Throw them and their cronies that paid them off in jail. Jamie Gorelick made $24,000,000 at Fannie Mae and we just yawn. After a while, people become numb to the numbers and need a jolt like this to WAKE UP!

One of my top 10. I think DC will resemble the film after a few years of obama rule.

Because the stock market isn’t the cause of the collaspe, it’s a symptom. The credit market is actually more important than the stock market to the economy and it is caught in a downward spiral.

this isn’t 1987. Think 1929 Credit crisis and bank runs lead to the depression. !987 had a different reason. It was lack of buyers mostly and fear. the quick rebound showed the fear was not warranted. This time we are looking at 450trillion in loses. Think about that for a moment.

I also believe in Karma. So if all goes to hell because of the folks that are being dishonest, greedy, short-sighted and outright a-holes…….

What goes around, comes around. They’d better duck.

tru2tx on September 28, 2008 at 12:16 AM

Terrye-I do believe that may be the case, hence the front loading of dems at the meeting. Nice way to slide their agenda through without contending with their own balking about some provisions.

irongrampa on September 28, 2008 at 12:17 AM

300 million people. 300 million frickin’ people and THESE are the fools we decided should run the nation.

Ya know…maybe there’s a reason that alien life hasn’t contacted us. They took a good close look at what passes for governments on this poor earth and decided we were too stupid to befriend.

Bishop on September 28, 2008 at 12:17 AM

I went to work today. Traffic lights still work. Same old traffic holding up the loads. 7-11 still had seven kinds of coffee. Starbucks across the street was packed. McDonalds still made my burger for lunch. Going home the traffic lights were still working and 7-11 had the lights blazing as I drove by. To my complete surprise my house was still sitting in the cul-de-sac. The dogs barked when I came in and asked me if the market had crashed yet. Opened the Fridgidare and lo and behold Pelosi hadn’t been in my twelve pack. Shocked. Shocked, I tell ya.

Are you kidding me? Go throw away your vote for a eunuch 3rd party and don’t you dare say the Republicans didn’t try to avert this, even Clinton himself said he and the Republicans tried to stop this but the Democrats stonewalled them.

I am telling you right now no bill was ever introduced by a republican that would have eliminated GSEs, and got the gov’t out of the mortgage business.
There was way to much Money from the banking lobby for anyone of those dudes to even fart about it.

paulsur on September 28, 2008 at 12:17 AM

We had SNL on and I ended up turning the channel. Not surprised they made Sarah look stupid again. It wouldn’t bother me so much if they did it on both sides, but they don’t. Last weeks incest skit was out of line, IMO. The left has been so vicious to her and her family and to see her continually mocked by the media and in these skits, its just too much. Tired of it.

artchick on September 28, 2008 at 12:04 AM

I saw this too. They are cruel. I’d like to think there really is a silent majority out there that’s fed up with the way she’s treated, fed up with the way Obama has been carried by the media, fed up with this bail out that’s being force-fed to us. I really do think McCain-Palin are the pair to try to do something in DC. Voters around the country should really think hard about voting their reps out–except for those House GOPers who are hanging tough.

BuckeyeSam on September 28, 2008 at 12:18 AM

Oh, btw Terrye-happy birthday. I no longer have them, as they’ve become obsolescent in my case.

Good night to all.

Bush is not a member of Congress, if he could not get the Republicans in Congress to stand with him on a veto of a bloated farm bill, he should not be blamed for the fact that they could not do their job of oversight. That is their responsibility, not his.

As for immigration, please, Bush’s policy on immigration is the same today as it was when he was given the nomination. It was not even an issue in 2000 or 2004. He never hid it, lied about it or pretended to be anything other than what he was. If people in the GOP could not deal with that, they should not have given him the nomination and then complained when he did not change his policy.

The war? This is not fair. It was Bush that put Patraeus in charge even when the Pentagon fought him on it. The idea that Bush was supposed to win 2 wars in no time flat with no dead people because it is just such a drag when it goes on and on or whatever sounds just plain petulant.

As for the spending, keep in mind that not only did we have 2 wars, we had natural disasters, an attack on the United States that costs more in one day than this bill they are negotiating will costs in years and a complete reorganization of the government.

And you know what? When Bush the compassionate conservative still had good numbers he won a second term and he had coat tails, he helped the Republican party do something it had not done in years: take control of both branches.

I don’t think Bush destroyed the party, I don’t think it is destroyed, but I do think that a lot of people decided that they did not like him much when he stopped being useful to them.

This isn’t 1987 and it isn’t 1929. Four hundred and fifty trillion in losses? Says who? You build a house, you sell it, the buyer defaults but the house (asset) is still there.

Was $450 trillion loaned out and “they” can’t get it back? What was it loaned for? Are there no hard assets for any of these loans? Where did the money go? Is part of it still around? If it ended up in someone’s pocket, go get it!

By the way. The world recovered from the 1929 crash too. It took 20 years but it recovered. Time to pay the piper!
