Video: Obama shamelessly contradicts himself about troops dying in vain
posted at 2:40 pm on September 27, 2008 by Allahpundit
Thanks to commenter (and ex-blogger) Seixon for catching this. Not a huge deal, but a nice reminder of what a cynical poseur The One is. Here he is last night during the bracelet exchange, sonorously declaring that no soldier dies in vain who follows the orders of his commander-in-chief:
And here’s how poseur ended his 2002 anti-war speech, which remains to this day the biggest/only credential on his foreign-policy resume:
The consequences of war are dire, the sacrifices immeasurable. We may have occasion in our lifetime to once again rise up in defense of our freedom, and pay the wages of war. But we ought not — we will not — travel down that hellish path blindly. Nor should we allow those who would march off and pay the ultimate sacrifice, who would prove the full measure of devotion with their blood, to make such an awful sacrifice in vain.
How can their sacrifice be in vain if they’re following the orders of the commander-in-chief? It can’t, according to potential commander-in-chief Barack Obama, who’s already thinking about the heat he’ll take from the cretins in his base if he follows through on a build-up in Afghanistan and the casualty numbers start ticking up. State senator Barack Obama was of a different opinion, since his reelection depended upon pandering to the leftist majority in his district. The One occasionally confuses the two, telling a crowd in Iowa early last year that we “have seen over 3,000 lives of the bravest young Americans wasted” before backing off afterwards and scolding himself for using constituent-inappropriate rhetoric. The joke here, of course, as it was when Diane Sawyer made Pelosi squirm on this same subject, is that the whole point of the left’s moral (as opposed to political) opposition to the war is that they think soldiers are dying needlessly. Even less coherent than “I support the troops but not their mission” is “I believe the occupation is wrong and possibly criminal but the blood being spilled for it is justified.” That’s where they’re at, though, because that’s where they have to be to “reconcile” the things they actually believe with the things they have to pretend to believe to get elected.
If Obama wanted to repudiate his 2002 statement in a coherent way, he could have argued that there’s been so much improvement over the past year in Iraq and so much damage done to Al Qaeda and the Sadrist fundies that even if he thought the sacrifice was in vain before, he doesn’t think so now. Granted, it’s asking a lot to ask him to nuke his biggest/only credential, but why shouldn’t he acknowledge the progress more robustly? After all, we owe the success of the surge to him and Biden, don’t we?

The scary part is that half the voters in this country seem to be willing to put this egomaniacal fool into the White House.
AZCoyote on September 27, 2008 at 2:50 PM
This s**t doesn’t matter if your guy isn’t willing to call his opponents on it. If McCain isn’t willing to take Barry on regarding the policies that got us into this economic crisis he’s not willing to pull the right punches.
This doesn’t matter. Will McCain bring on the juice? Eh – I’m skeptical at this point. They were not willing to put the election out of reach when they were up. Instead, they pulled the lipstick schtick to try and appeal to PUMAs. They are so ignorant they didn’t realize they ALREADY had all the PUMAs they were going to get.
Idiots.

I disagree. This is more significant than the bracelet gaffe.
Disturb the Universe on September 27, 2008 at 2:51 PM
It’s really bizarre. He can’t hurt himself. Nothing he can do, including trying to use law enforcement to shut down political speech against him, will alarm Americans who just think he’s “cool” or something. I never thought I’d see this day.

Almost half the country was willing to put the elitist traitor Ketchup in office in 2004, why wouldn’t they be likely to do the same with the Obamanation today?

we have to fight and f*cking win. we have to.
blatantblue on September 27, 2008 at 3:07 PM
We can fight all we want, but if the guy you want to win isn’t going to fight there’s no help for him. He’s not fighting in any way shape or form. He’s not even trying.
Is there a strategy? Maybe. Do we know what it is? Uh, no.
Editor on September 27, 2008 at 3:10 PM
i guess I’m officially out of touch….how can people think Obama won that debate. I don’t see any reason at all to believe so. Why am I so stupid.
tomas on September 27, 2008 at 3:11 PM
I wouldn’t accuse McCain of not fighting. I think he’s trying to be smart, and not turn off people in the middle. I’m not sure that strategy is doing him any good – doesn’t look like it is – but I think there is a strategy.
There has to be something that we can do, but other than prayer (and I’m serious about that), I don’t know what that might be. How do you fight the Democrats, what seems like 99% of the media, and an ignorant population who would vote for someone without examining his background/record – or cast a vote for him in spite of it?
We only have a month.
capitalist piglet on September 27, 2008 at 3:14 PM
Someone should create a video of the 4th Presidential debate, where BO takes himself on. You could find plenty of places where he has taken both sides AND the middle.
OBQuiet on September 27, 2008 at 3:14 PM
Answer to your first question: blind partisanship.
Answer to your second question: Perhaps you lived under power lines when you were a baby. Perhaps you ate paint chips as a toddler. Perhaps you fell on your head in grade school. I’m just guessing here.
ManlyRash on September 27, 2008 at 3:15 PM
I so despise liberal democrats like The Obama. I simply can not stand to listen to them. I dare not express just how much . . .
Look at it like this, you have a neighbor who lies. Or your daughter is dating a guy who lies all the time. You risk your future having any contact with someone like that.
Negotiations, interventions, persuasion, leave that to the missionaries.
rockhauler on September 27, 2008 at 3:15 PM
I remember when Mel Gibson’s “Passion” was released and universally condemned by the MSM. When it had grossed over 100 million dollars in short time we got “where the hell did these people come from?” stories. I long for many “where the hell did these voters come from?” stories in November and December.
Marcus on September 27, 2008 at 3:16 PM
He’s not fighting. he had an open invitation to take Barry down on the economic situation and completely let it pass.
I have no problem accusing them of not fighting. Give me any examples to prove me wrong.

by the way, I probably had the same argument about Bush ’04, too.
Editor on September 27, 2008 at 3:23 PM
I agree. McCain was out of touch on the bailout and it cost him severely.
When Obama said that the bailout was the fault of deregulation and we need accountability, etc., McCain should have:
1. Asked Obama what specific deregulatory policy he thought was responsible, then distinguished that; and
2. Said the problem was caused by liberal government policies forcing banks to lend to people who couldn’t afford to repay, and by government “agencies” fannie and freddie “laundering” all that bad paper; and
3. Emphasizing that this issue is too important for “cheap partisan politics” (this particular line McCain actually did use).
Instead, McCain starts rambling about reining in pork barrel spending. It was off-point and given that this bailout is the #1 issue on everyone’s mind right now, that was a critical error. That, tomas@3:11, is why people think Obama won. HUGE missed opportunity by McCain.
Outlander on September 27, 2008 at 3:23 PM
Obama’s lust for power is more important than being honest or credible.
Chakra Hammer on September 27, 2008 at 3:29 PM
It wasn’t the right time for that particular battle and McCain was wise to hold his fire. Besides, the F-Mae/F-Mac business is still developing. He’s going to let the dust settle and chips fall before deciding on the correct approach vector and OODA loop. His stumble on this issue was fortuitous, because it gives the Obama people a false sense of superiority.

I had never realized that Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address was an anti-war screed.
unclesmrgol on September 27, 2008 at 3:33 PM
Every time I read that speech I am reminded of what a loser Obama is. His remark about Karl Rove being a “hack” is cringeworthy, and then there’s this:
Two points -
One: It further underscores Allah’s point that he clearly believed at that time that those who died in Iraq died in vain.
Two: It demonstrates that he has gotten it wrong about the difference between Auschwitz and Buchenwald for years and can’t keep his own family members straight.
In this anti-war speech he refers to his “grandfather”, but 6 years after he first made this error, he repeats the Auschwitz story, but this time he refers to his “uncle”.
Who’s the “hack”, Barry? You or Karl Rove?
Buy Danish on September 27, 2008 at 3:33 PM
The Bailout is not passed, McCain DID NOT want to make the bailout partisan, Obama made the Bailout partisan and might screw everything up..

Editor,
I do generally agree with your analysis and your point about Bush is true as well.
So, given that, how has Obama fought for us lately?
Do you see the difference?
The difference is underlying personal image, for which words are not needed. That is the lasting impression die that has been cast and there is no getting around, and, as such no need for panic or whining.
Mcguyver on September 27, 2008 at 3:45 PM
Oh, and shall we ask Sir Glutes Sullivan or a member of the leftosphere whether or not Obama is correct in saying that soldiers cannot die in vain? In fact, what Obama said makes absolutely no sense on its face. Of course soldiers can die in vain, you friggin pander-bot.
Seixon on September 27, 2008 at 3:45 PM
If John McCain had been looking at Obama and not his shoes he would have seen the gaffe and pounced on it. Bad debate prep from the McCain campaign.
The minute he hesitated what a marvelous night it would have been if McCain had said, “don’t you know his name?”
Jdripper on September 27, 2008 at 3:55 PM
Because all he’s got is his “moral courage” in opposing the war before a group of anti-war activists in his home town. Nothing else but the hindsight of a Harvard-educated radical community organizer turned corrupt state politician who was about to waltz his way to the big time with the help of some of the wealthiest and morally bankrupt enablers in America.
Nichevo on September 27, 2008 at 3:55 PM
I’m with you. When he said it, I actually yelled at the TV. The bracelet thing was just an embarrassing brain fart…but the “didn’t die in vain” statement in contrast with his rhetoric for years was a huge, boldfaced lie.

I think Obama was just being un-P.C.
Our troops did die in vain, IMHO. There were no WMDs nor any ties to 9/11.

philnewkirk on September 27, 2008 at 3:57 PM
I agree. McCain is walking a pretty delicate line right now and won’t sacrifice the chance to make the bill more taxpayer friendly for some political points in a debate. I do hope after the thing is passed, he recites the whole sequence of causation, chapter and verse, in the next debate.

Jamson64 on September 27, 2008 at 4:01 PM
Time for a fire watch on that armband. I bet he wears it only for debates or similar situations.
TexasDan on September 27, 2008 at 4:02 PM
Huh – I’m not saying Barry is fighting for us, but he is fighting for the Presidency.
John said he was going to name names and make people famous. That’s what got people excited about his speech. Here’s his chance…. (crickets)
Sorry – that’ speaks volumes to me.
He may well pull this out, but he’s not fighting for my vote and he’s not letting his VP candidate fight for my vote either.
Do you know why? Do you know what the strategy is?
Editor on September 27, 2008 at 4:02 PM
Publicly belittling an opponent before a national audience doesn’t work. The tape caught the gaffe, and it isn’t going away. It serves to reinforce what middle America suspects about the guy. McCain didn’t have to say a thing.
Nichevo on September 27, 2008 at 4:02 PM
…the Left has morals?
The whole thrust of Leftist opposition to this or any other war engaged in by the US since the Comintern financed red heyday of the 1930′s is that the US is fighting a war not specifically supported by THEM.
Should the US continue to defend itself willy-nilly, the Left has resolved to continue to fuss, pout, march and then write a mess of pretty poignant screenplays and performance art pieces to register their disapproval.
Remember that it was Katha Pollit who forbade her daugther from hanging a US flag in her bedroom window because, true to her “morals”, the US was a nasty place…all that racism, social injustice, sexism, and unfashionable coffee, don’cha know….
The Left cares as much about soldiers, living or dying, as Imelda Marcos cared about her shoes…there were a lot of ‘em, and each was useful in its turn, but ultimately they were just shoes….

That was a huge cringe-and-hit-TV moment for the anti-war activist.
HUGE!!
I’m telling you folks, this whole debate was/is a nightmare for The One!!
When the libs say it’s a draw, that means he lost BIG!!
In fact, the Anti-war activists can argue that they would get more for their money in John McCain’s promise that their will be no torture when he is president, because he can be trusted to stick to his guns.
The lying, pandering and pretzel making by Obama IS SO OBVIOUS that it’s makes the extreme left fringe look STUPID in voting for him!!
This debate is in the final analysis, so bad for Obama, we don’t even know how bad it is!!
I mean Dennis Kucinich has a better political future than Obama in their eyes because he sticks to his guns!!

…trying to win a popularity contest, phil?
“No WMDs” resonates about as well as does “win back the Danzig corridor”. No ties to 9/11? $20k to each homicide bomber’s family…Abu Nidal being hooched-up in Baghdad…gazillions going in bribes to France and Russia and the chablis socialists of Western Europe…the gazillions sealed into boxes and then bricked up into walls, all the while Lefty morons were talking about a million kids dying as a result of the UN sanctions…Sadam Freaking Hussein, after all…he’s reason enough.
You’re really going to have to get some new material. Maybe you can start railing against Kofi Annan and his family being a cluster of bought-out enablers of terrorism and genocide. Maybe you can begin to be miffed at Achmedalphabet and the Laughing Mullahs tooling up for the nuclear appearance of the twelfth imam. Maybe you could grow an attitude about poisonous Chinese manufactures…and even more poisonous Chinese maneuvers.
You’re gonna have to do something. Your current line is getting a bit threadbare.
It’s easy to spit venom at your own country. You don’t even have to leave home.

UPDATE TO MR. PHILLIP BERG’S LAWSUIT AGAINST BARACK OBAMA BASED ON OBAMA’S INELIGIBILITY ON HIS CANDIDACY AS REGARDS THE REQUIREMENTS OF NATURAL BORN CITIZENSHIP ACCORDING TO THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
Partial excerpt from an email I sent Mr. Berg:
“I trust the judge did not originally dismiss your lawsuit because it does indeed have merit. We, as Americans, in order to fulfill the intent and directive of our Constitution are bound by patriotic duty to determine the legal status of any citizen running for the Presidency of the United States; such determination of status having to do with a requirement that said citizen must be a natural born citizen. Mr. Obama should be required to present pertinent evidence that would allow a judge or qualified public official to determine if he is, or is not, a natural born citizen. It is a legal requirement.”
Mr. Berg sent this copy of Mr. Obama’s and the DNC’s response.
Update: http://www.nextgenerationcorp.com/NextGenBlog/?p=66
It appears that Mr. Obama is trying to stall the matter. The outstanding issue is Mr. Obama’s birth certificate (Certificate of Live Birth). It appears that so far he has obfuscated this issue as well by providing, or having his agents provide, a false certificate of birth for publication.
But to Mr. Obama’s determent, the people of the United States of America demand that he (Mr. Obama) remove himself from eligibility to run for any political office for which he is not qualified and/or for which he (Mr. Obama) will not publicly present authoritative qualification for his candidacy as required by the Constitution of the United States of America.
God bless.

b) throw out morsels one at a time..

e) evaluate the blow back
f) and then completely unload with an October surprise
Has the McCain-might-pick-a-pro-choice-VP trial balloon not taught you anything?
What you are suffering from is a classic “The suspense is killing me” straight out from a movie script.

I frankly don’t care if the person is Christian or not…a lot of queer things happen in the name of some folks claiming that distinction…look at Pflegger, Jerry Wright, the UCC as a whole, the Episcopal Church USA, just about everything out of the mouth of the current Archbishop of Canterbury, most of the mainline churches (PCUSA, Methodists, any member of the National Council of Churches), and the morons who are/will be hosting that tete-a-tete with Mahmoud Ahmedalphabet.

/take the money you’ve been stealing from us with yer paycheck and hit the bricks …

Obama wants to give Al-Quaeda and Iran Control over Iraq, McCain wants Democracy in Iraq, and wants our troops to come home..
Obama wants Iraq to fail so that terrorist have a training ground to attack us and our allies from so that our troops have to go back and fight the war all over again..
Chakra Hammer on September 27, 2008 at 5:50 PM
Regardless of your opinion on what to do once war has been started, you do think it is wrong to call those who call the war evil “unpatriotic,” right.
philnewkirk on September 27, 2008 at 5:59 PM
Terrorists, not terrorist. The plural of terrorist is terrorists.
philnewkirk on September 27, 2008 at 6:01 PM
This isn’t helping Michelle’s children.
ManlyRash on September 27, 2008 at 6:02 PM
Phil, in anoter thread you said you get your paycheck from Uncle Sam. Which part of the federal bureaucracy sends you your check?
ManlyRash on September 27, 2008 at 6:03 PM
…you must have me confused with some other “puritan”….
…myself, I’m the one who says that anyone who clings to “no WMDs” and other lame Leftist talking points is a bozo.
I’m also the one who thinks that Megyn Kelly in a thong bikini would make a dandy Christmas present.
…to quote “Buckaroo”:
…go to war sometime…mine wasn’t that bad…my son’s is a bit more stressful…but they’re always at the very least costly and inconvenient…the problem is that, as Machiavelli says:
…so, talk early and talk often, but the evil of war shouldn’t make us heir to it by our inaction.
Puritan1648 on September 27, 2008 at 6:04 PM
Obama is a radical racist left-wing socialist radical terrorist sympathizer, and has unrepentant terrorist friends, he has friends that are slumlords and now convicted felons, he has people on his campaign staff now being investigated by THE FBI for FRAUD in the economic collapse that was caused by him and his Democrat friends in the name of Socialism .
Obama is a POS, and the American people will not elect that turd, no matter how much the extreme liberal media try to push that POS down our throats.
Obama’s race baiting has been the worse than Al Sharpton.
Chakra Hammer on September 27, 2008 at 6:05 PM
See.. you can’t make a comeback..
Chakra Hammer on September 27, 2008 at 6:06 PM
What you seem to be saying is that it is unpatriotic to question a war.
philnewkirk on September 27, 2008 at 6:07 PM
Prove that they are her biological children. LMAO
Chakra Hammer on September 27, 2008 at 6:07 PM
Would you bang Michelle?
I wouldn’t now that tells you everything you need to know about Obama’s Judgment! LMAO!
He supposedly had sex with a woman that looks like a dude at least twice!
Chakra Hammer on September 27, 2008 at 6:09 PM
Let’s say it’s a very new member of the federal bureaucracy. :)
philnewkirk on September 27, 2008 at 6:10 PM
Don’t be coy, Phil. Tell us.
ManlyRash on September 27, 2008 at 6:13 PM
Again with the stuttering. It drives me crazy!

…yes, when, as happened so often during Vietnam (and Grenada and Panama and Lebanon and Somalia and the Balkans and the first Gulf War), and as happened with nauseating frequency today, it doesn’t just stop with observing that war is uncool.
More often than not, it first springs from a well of distrust and hatred of what the country stands for, and a fairly large hatred of those who stand by it, and ends up with the commander-in-chief having to spend 7 years fighting two wars with one hand tied behind his back…politically speaking, of course….
…so…
* no wiretapping of foreign fighters in foreign countries
* no harsh interrogations, no matter how effective at stopping friendly casualties
* no calling the enemy “islamofascists”
* no calling them the enemy, if you can avoid it (call them “fighters”)
* point out every mistake as soon as you can, be it of an individual grunt or a general or (especially) of a cabinet secretary
* accuse forces on the ground of doing unspeakable things without the slightest shred of proof
* …in short, give aid and comfort to the enemy….
…I’m not lumping every opponent of the current round of wars in with the opponents of Vietnam, etc., of with Murtha, Sheehan and the like…I’m just saying they often lump themselves together…with nauseating frequency….
…I’m not saying that opposition to war is unpatriotic…I’m just saying that opposition to this war has proven itself to spring from unpatriotic roots and to manifest itself in unpatriotic ways…to the benefit of the enemy.
Questions?
Puritan1648 on September 27, 2008 at 6:16 PM
That is so tiresome, correcting people like that. Cut it out.
