Video: “I’ve got a bracelet too”

This moment may stick with Barack Obama for a while.  During the debate, John McCain explained that he wanted to remain resolute for victory in Iraq for the families of the men and women who had given their all for the mission.  McCain talked about a bracelet he received from the mother of Matthew Stanley to emphasize his commitment, which he has done in campaign stops for the last several months.  Team Obama prepared for it, but Obama blew the delivery:

And I’ll tell you, I had a town hall meeting in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, and a woman stood up and she said, “Senator McCain, I want you to do me the honor of wearing a bracelet with my son’s name on it.”

MCCAIN: He was 22 years old and he was killed in combat outside of Baghdad, Matthew Stanley, before Christmas last year. This was last August, a year ago. And I said, “I will — I will wear his bracelet with honor.”

And this was August, a year ago. And then she said, “But, Senator McCain, I want you to do everything — promise me one thing, that you’ll do everything in your power to make sure that my son’s death was not in vain.”

That means that that mission succeeds, just like those young people who re-enlisted in Baghdad, just like the mother I met at the airport the other day whose son was killed. And they all say to me that we don’t want defeat.

A war that I was in, where we had an Army, that it wasn’t through any fault of their own, but they were defeated. And I know how hard it is for that — for an Army and a military to recover from that. And it did and we will win this one and we won’t come home in defeat and dishonor and probably have to go back if we fail.

OBAMA: Jim, let me just make a point. I’ve got a bracelet, too, from Sergeant – from the mother of Sergeant Ryan David Jopeck, sure another mother is not going through what I’m going through.

Now, the point here was valid — not all Gold Star Mothers agree on Iraq, Cindy Sheehan being the most outré example of Obama’s constituency among them.  Unfortunately, Obama fumbled the delivery on two points. First, his “I’ve got a bracelet, too” sounded whiny, childish, and petulant.  Obama wanted to one-up McCain rather than make his point, and it came out defensive and petty instead of presidential.

Obama clearly prepared for this moment, knowing McCain would discuss his bracelet, but in those preparations, Obama didn’t commit the soldier’s name to memory.  He had to look down at his bracelet to remember the name.  McCain didn’t have to do that, which made Obama look much more manipulative in his presentation.  It was a “tell”, a poker term for an involuntary physical manifestation of a player’s hand.

Will this be a defining moment of this debate?  Perhaps, although I doubt it will get much attention outside of the blogosphere.  If so, it embodies everything wrong with presidential debates — the staged gotchas, the sound-bite mentality, and the focus on the sensational over the substantial.  Obama tried to play that game, and he may wind up hoist by his own petard, which makes it only moderately more palatable.

Obama had a good debate showing, as a Columbia educated, Harvard Law professor should have.. BUT, he couldn’t match the knowledge of a guy who finished 5th from the bottom of his class.

Harvard… myeh.

I thought this was a devastating moment for O!, particularly in contrast to McCain’s heartfelt telling of his own bracelet.

It (including at least part of McCain’s section) should be a commercial — run by a 527 group, either of veterans or families of MIAs/KIAs.

What the heck did O! mean by that last statement?

sure another mother is not going through what I’m going through

I have no idea what he was trying to convey, but it sounds like he’s focusing on himself again.

I still think the biggest “oops” from this debate is one we’re not yet talking about, but which we will be in the weeks to come.

Obama said:

… the notion was that there was no other country on Earth where you could make it if you tried. The ideals and the values of the United States inspired the entire world.

I don’t think any of us can say that our standing in the world now, the way children around the world look at the United States, is the same.

Good God, man. Michelle Obama had an awkward phrasing about how proud she was of America and it was a major soundbite for months. The candidate himself chose as his prepared end thoughts to tell us that he thinks American ideals and values no longer inspire the world.

What was he thinking?

ClintACK on September 27, 2008 at 1:33 PM

Let me just say, I’m not convinced he was looking down at the bracelet. Surely, if he had to do that, he would have done it when the cameras were on McCain? Right?

OBAMA: Jim, let me just make a point. I’ve got a bracelet, too, from Sergeant uh, uh - from the mother of Sergeant Ryan David Jopeck, sure another mother is not going through what I’m going through.

Fixed it for you.

I said this on a Headlines thread – I think that Obama had been prepped to bring up his bracelet FIRST, and try to either preempt McCain from telling his favorite story at all, or make him look like an old fool if he did. But he forgot, and McCain got to tell his story first, and Obama panicked. I would bet money this is what happened, and I’ll double that money that Axelrod was in the back room cursing and throwing things when it happened.

He can’t even do his rehearsed stunts properly.

Someone in one of the debate threads last night posted a link to a recent Obama pic where he was not wearing the bracelet. If you’re going to wear one, you need to commit to wearing it all the time, not just for debates and other special occasions.

Is this kind of bracelet a common fashion accessory in Washington? What are the odds that two people would do this exact same thing? Did someone give McCain a bracelet first, and then Obama said “Uh Oh, I’d better get one too,” and then go out and round one up? Pretty lame.

Also, has anybody fact-checked the thing where Obama said he told Bush back in April that he needed to take action against those Russian ‘peacekeepers’ in Georgia? I find it at least a little bit impossible to believe anything even remotely like that actually happened.

I know– I’m just not getting this narrative from the MSM that he won. Well, of course I get it, but even in 2000 they mentioned Al Gore’s sighing and what not… seems no one but the right is calling Barack on his pettiness as seen in the clip above– or how rude he was talking over McCain, which happened several times. My bias aside, really thought that was obvious and would come across to people… but I guess not?

Pasalubong on September 27, 2008 at 1:43 PM

Obama didn’t commit the soldier’s name to memory

That reminded me of Danny Devito’s character in “Renaissance Man” when he told an Army officer that back in the 60’s he had carried a banner with the name of a soldier “who had died needlessly in Vietnam”. The officer said “Do you remember the name of that soldier?” He said “Uh … no.”

The thing that seems to be lost is that most of the serving military wants to win this war — period. McCain showed that at home and in theater, it’s plain that this is the consensus: win the war.

Obama just wants to buy into those “gotcha” moments — pure media sensationalism, over substance…as Ed shows.

You guess correctly. Only the right-blogs, Fox News and talk radio will make any mention of Obama’s numerous gaffes and flubs in last night’s debate. The Drive-Bys will have the entire weekend to scrub and polish Obama’s debate appearance. When they present it to the American public next week, Obama’s performance will appear to be flawless.

It’s actually pretty close to that. The mother that gave Obama his bracelet saw McCain wearing one on tv, so she gave one to Obama. There’s a WaPo article about it that’s been linked in some of these bracelet posts.

rw on September 27, 2008 at 1:53 PM

Obama seemed uncomfortable with his own stunt.

I was listening to Major Garrett’s report on the spin coming out of the campaign this morning. He said the Obama campaign was dissing McCain’s knowledge of history as irrelevant; that McCain looks to the past, while Obama looks to the future.

What is very telling, however, is that McCain has a past of which he can be proud, while Obama, with the help of the MSM, has done everything in his power to hide or downplay his past. Obama is more willing to condemn America’s mistakes than he is his own. As a matter of fact, he refuses to even recognize his own.

Connie on September 27, 2008 at 1:54 PM

Obama used many, many “gotchas” against McCain in this debate. Such as bringing up his alleged comments about Iraq (taken out of context, of course, or even invented), then thing about the prime minister of Spain, trying to use Kissinger against him (even though that, too, was wrong), etc.

He tried to use many of the “gotchas” that bloggers and the media have harvested against McCain, instead of just debating policies. The more immature petulant folks one finds on the Left eats this shit up, but to more serious folks, it just seems lame.

Seixon on September 27, 2008 at 1:54 PM

OBAMA: Jim, let me just make a point. I’ve got a bracelet, too, from Sergeant – from the mother of Sergeant Ryan David Jopeck, sure another mother is not going through what I’m going through.

Other than the awkward faux pas of not remembering the Sargeant’s name, the basic problem with Barry’s statement is that it relies on a false premise.

There is no way that a Commander in Chief can guarantee that another mother will not grieve for a son killed in combat, whether it be in Iraq, or anywhere else. However, a Commander in Chief can guarantee that our country will not abandon the mission.

Moreover, one of the Left’s most idiotic arguments for surrendering in Iraq is not based on the welfare of our military, but is that we need the money we are spending in Iraq to fund social programs, a theme advanced by Barry last night:

OBAMA: The problem with a spending freeze is you’re using a hatchet where you need a scalpel. There are some programs that are very important that are under funded. I went to increase early childhood education and the notion that we should freeze that when there may be, for example, this Medicare subsidy doesn’t make sense.

Let me tell you another place to look for some savings. We are currently spending $10 billion a month in Iraq when they have a $79 billion surplus. It seems to me that if we’re going to be strong at home as well as strong abroad, that we have to look at bringing that war to a close.

Not ready to lead; not ready to be Commander in Chief.

I hate to say it, but a lot hinges on SNL tonight. If they skewer Obama it’s a new ballgame next week. If they’re still afraid to go after The One, we may be in trouble. I can think of some hilarious ways they could parody his performance. I would especially like to see “McCain” giving a nice straight answer, and then the camera switches to “Obama” admiring himself in a hand mirror, or being fitted with a crown or robe, saying “what? What’s the question again?” And then have some snot-nosed college kids in the audience swoon over him. Maybe cut to “Hillary” at home watching him screw up and throwing things at the TV.

rockmom on September 27, 2008 at 1:56 PM

Now, the point here was valid — not all Gold Star Mothers agree on Iraq

That is true, but Obama wants to be Commander in Chief. If he wins, he will be faced constantly with the decision whether to make another mother go through what she went through.
I think his big mistake was mentioning that plea from the anti-war mother. No mother wants her child in harm’s way.
No CinC wants soldiers to die. But the thing no credible CinC can do is promise no soldiers will die on his watch.

It’s the difference between being the guy for whom making an anti-war speech was his toughest decision ever, and being the guy that actually has to command the Military.

Until Obama releases his transcripts, his entire education is in question. Until this past month, Occidental had no record available that Obama ever attended. Even is Obama has the degrees claimed, his lack of intellectual prowess proves that he certainly did not graduate anywhere near the top of any class, including high school.

calgrammy on September 27, 2008 at 2:08 PM

LOL (AP) Fact Checked last night’s debate, as though AP has any fact check credibility.

They parse McCain’s reference to Eisenhower’s alternate address prepared should the Normandy D-Day Invasion fail. McCain explained the military obligation that accompanies such a text from a commanding officer. The officer need not submit the words, “therefore, I submit my formal resignation.” Regardless of how popular Eisenhower was or wasn’t at that point, had Normandy failed, he most assuredly would have been dismissed. For today’s idiots to infer otherwise only proves their own stupidity.

The majority of the undecided and fence sitting Americans have a lot to digest from this debate, but ultimately the many child like behaviors from Obama will be the final clincher in all this.

The power of suggestion is everything here… and reading the power of the underlying suggestions that came out as a whole from this debate, they are absolutely devastating for Obama. And The One has no one to blame but himself.

I could write a book about this.

Trust me, there will be a book written by somebody on this subject.

I was with some young folks (who popped in very briefly) during the debate – who were not even necessarily interested in the debate, and I’m telling you the sound bites and the underlying “feel” of them are absolutely devastating for Obama!

This “feel” is what sticks in people’s mind in the final analysis.

Oh I’m sorry.. am I being racist? If so.. who reminded me first?

Do you see what I mean?

The underlying “impression” die has been cast and no one is to blame except The One.

Nonfactor on September 27, 2008 at 2:08 PM

And addressing a senior colleague and political rival who is 25 years your senior by his first name in a formal debate when he addresses you by your professional title is not a tell either.

Obama was obviously uncomfortable delivering his canned “me too” response and clearly did not remember the details about the soldier whose bracelet he was wearing.

What compelled him to try to play the “I love soldiers, too” game is beyond me. He should be comfortable with who he is and not pretend to be something he is not.

Y-not on September 27, 2008 at 2:15 PM

Unfortunately, Obama fumbled the delivery on two points. First, his “I’ve got a bracelet, too” sounded whiny, childish, and petulant.

…I don’t know about “whiny, childish and petulant”…I just think that he’s hardly ever read the bracelet…after all…it’s just a prop…like the flag lapel pin.

In Mr. McCain’s case, I’m sure that it’s not a prop.

This goes to the root of the whole “stuttering” accusation levelled in at least one case by some boob in a focus group after the debate. Mr. McCain wasn’t stuttering…he was speaking. Many of us don’t actually rehearse what we’re going to say. Somebody asks us a question, and we have to search for the words to give a proper answer.

…on a podium in a nationally televised debate — the most important debate, given recent events, by an underdog candidate facing the solid phalanx of Leftist press and Establishment — choosing ones words must be a staggering task.

It’s as clear that Mr. Obama was seldom rattled, and didn’t “stutter”…because he wasn’t answering questions. He receivees a question as one of Pavlov’s dogs would receive a stimulus, and he’d regurgitate a response…something Pavlov never asked of his pooches. Being capable of a wider range of tricks than a dog — I’ll give him that — Mr. Obama could pick from a range of pre-digested responses and bark them out on cue.

None of Mr. Obama’s responses meant anything…he knows that his promises are of the “40 acre and a mule” variety (sorry for over-using this phrase today, but it occurred to me in watching the debate that this is what he was doing) and he knows that we’ll never as a nation be able to afford to bail out banks, fight two wars, give everybody a puppy at Christmas and give 95% of folks a tax cut…even he knows that….

…so…40 acres and a mule….

He stumbled in this case because he couldn’t remember the name of a guy who’s on a bracelet he supposedly wears every day…to remind him of the guy!

…this guy’s got the gravitas of Charmin bathroom tissue…but isn’t as useful….

As for the bracelet, it made The One look a little silly as if he were in fact a mortal man.

I thought he was rude.

Terrye on September 27, 2008 at 2:49 PM

what is this “not ready to lead?” when will he ever be ready? their platform doesn’t work… I think he could lead just fine… lead us into a ditch or worse yet a cliff… he’ll never be ready to lead, because he’s wrong to lead. he’s the type of person who needs to follow… voting present? come on…

I was stuck in a hospital waiting room for several hours today. CNN was on, showing clips of the debate. There were numerous people there, and a couple of them started shaking their heads, then some muttering started, then pretty soon people were making eye contact with each other and openly laughing and jeering. It was all against Obama.

Perfect strangers, y’all. From all walks of life. In a hospital waiting room. :)

UGH . . . The reason that Obama is a moron is his lack of understanding for HISTORY!!!! Without history there is no future . . . and if one more person goes on and on about “science and math” education I think that my head will explode.

Govgirl on September 27, 2008 at 2:11 PM

Google up Stanley Kurtz and The Annenberg Challenge project that Barry chaired. Almost all the funds distributed went to Bill Ayers type “social education” programs and requests for science and math programs were denied. I thought Barry’s sudden enthusiam for science and math education last night was particularly ironic, given his history.

UPDATE TO MR. PHILLIP BERG’S LAWSUIT AGAINST BARACK OBAMA BASED ON OBAMA’S INELIGIBILITY ON HIS CANDIDACY AS REGARDS THE REQUIREMENTS OF NATURAL BORN CITIZENSHIP ACCORDING TO THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

Partial excerpt from an email I sent Mr. Berg:

“I trust the judge did not originally dismiss your lawsuit because it does indeed have merit. We, as Americans, in order to fulfill the intent and directive of our Constitution are bound by patriotic duty to determine the legal status of any citizen running for the Presidency of the United States; such determination of status having to do with a requirement that said citizen must be a natural born citizen. Mr. Obama should be required to present pertinent evidence that would allow a judge or qualified public official to determine if he is, or is not, a natural born citizen. It is a legal requirement.”

Mr. Berg sent this copy of Mr. Obama’s and the DNC’s response.

Update: http://www.nextgenerationcorp.com/NextGenBlog/?p=66

It appears that Mr. Obama is trying to stall the matter. The outstanding issue is Mr. Obama’s birth certificate (Certificate of Live Birth). It appears that so far he has obfuscated this issue as well by providing, or having his agents provide, a false certificate of birth for publication.

But to Mr. Obama’s determent, the people of the United States of America demand that he (Mr. Obama) remove himself from eligibility to run for any political office for which he is not qualified and/or for which he (Mr. Obama) will not publicly present authoritative qualification for his candidacy as required by the Constitution of the United States of America.

God bless.

If the corruption laws were more effective Obama woul be wearing an ankle bracelet.

VIZ- Rezko.

profitsbeard on September 27, 2008 at 4:24 PM

Hey Ed, love the bracelet moment, but could you post the video of Obama smugly stating he had a great VP as a defense to his lack of foriegn policy experience? I haven’t seen this moment discussed on any thread anywhere but I thought it was a huge moment during the debate and it’s not getting the exposure it deserves.

PatMac on September 27, 2008 at 4:31 PM

It was obvious that Obama’s camp prepped him for this and were probably laughing with glee all week thinking about how effective a comeback it would be. When Obama had to look at the bracelet to remember the name, even the most thick viewer had to see it as the cynical political ploy it actually was.

Southernblogger on September 27, 2008 at 2:22 PM

They thought it would be their Lloyd Bentson moment with Dan Quayle. Barry made sure it blew up in his face. hahahaha

You assume his purpose. looking at him fumbling might have caused the Senior Statesman to laugh.

hawkdriver on September 27, 2008 at 5:25 PM

What compelled him to try to play the “I love soldiers, too” game is beyond me. He should be comfortable with who he is and not pretend to be something he is not.

Y-not on September 27, 2008 at 2:15 PM

Liberals forgive each other for doing what it takes. They know he’s not lying to them. Further, lying to the conservative infidels in attempts to win a few of their votes is not a lie at all. It’s righteous warfare. And he’s not totally ignorant to armed conflict. And he actually considered joining the military for a few minutes once.

hawkdriver on September 27, 2008 at 5:35 PM

An orgy of bracelet comments.

I hate to say it, but a lot hinges on SNL tonight. If they skewer Obama it’s a new ballgame next week.

rockmom on September 27, 2008 at 1:56 PM

Sadly, I wouldn’t count on it.

Yes, they were willing to skewer media bias for Obama — when doing so helped Hillary. But SNL has historically been fairly anti-GOP.

On the other hand, I’ve heard totally unsubstantiated rumors that Sarah Palin might guest star…

And Barack Obama did cancel on them during Ike…

And I actually thought the skit on the NYTimes staff meeting was hillarious…

Oooh. Now I’m going to have to set the TiVo…

ClintACK on September 27, 2008 at 5:56 PM

OBAMA: Jim, let me just make a point. I’ve got a bracelet, too, from Sergeant – from the mother of Sergeant Ryan David Jopeck, sure another mother is not going through what I’m going through.

Good, wrap it around your neck, you loser.

He wasn’t afraid to look at the marxist. This move by McCain was brilliant.

When I saw this camera angle of Barry looking over at McCain and McCain looking straight ahead, the message I got from McCain was:

“Barry, you’ve got nothing to say to me.”

The moonbats are going to go nutz-o when Barry loses in a landslide.

I remember when he said that it seemed to come completely out of left field. His suddenly mentioning Biden was so discordant that I completely lost track of what he was saying just before it.

theregoestheneighborhood on September 27, 2008 at 7:50 PM

Well, this won’t get much, if any, play on the cut n’ paste media…but I posted it on my blog. So, at least 20 more people will see it.

At least.

I wonder what Obama did with his Karl Marx bracelet after he took it off and put Cpl Stanley’s on in its place.
