Polls: McCain loses two points in Rasmussen, three in Gallup and Hotline

Gallup still has him within three but he’s slipped to seven back in Hotline and five back in Rasmussen, where he and The One have traded leads of one or two points for the better part of four months. A backlash after he pulled out of the debate? Or is this just further byproduct of Obama’s lead on the economy? Hotline ventures a guess:

Also this: “When asked how the financial news/events will affect their vote in Nov., 48% said it would not. Among those who said it would, 29% said it would make them more likely to support Obama, 16% said they’d be more likely to support McCain.” Meanwhile, Rasmussen claims that McCain’s lead among white women is almost gone and that, incredibly, Obama now draws the same level of support among Dems that McCain does among Republicans, suggesting that Clintonites are at last coming home.
As for the trends in swing state polls, let’s just avoid the subject entirely, shall we?
Maybe we should stop thinking about politics for awhile. Here’s a clip of Canadian football players playfully celebrating a touchdown with Duck Duck Goose. Aw.
Update: Brutal.

McCain just needs to keep keeping it close. If the polls stay in the 3 to 5 range until election day that is a win for McCain.

So in other words, Obama actually outmaneuvered McCain on this issue, despite the claims to the contrary. That’s truly depressing.
Oh well. We nominated a turkey and he’s gobbling his way to a freaking Obama victory. We got what we asked for.
All I can say is, there better be a deal today, the deal better be good, and McCain better get some freaking credit.

Yes I understand and that is another reason for which McCain is slipping in the polls. Teh “no” bailout bill vote is a factor in this(conservatives being upset. We’ll see. But I can’t help myself not to see how pesimistic this posts have been lately. We must be honest and recognize that McCain has a very slim chanse of winning anyway.

What I don’t get is the public is against the bailout 45 – 30.
So how come the guy who goes back to Washington to fight for a better deal for the tax-payers gets hurt by this? Bambi is goofing off in a gymn and saying ‘Call me if you need me’ and he gains points? The Democrats want to pass a larded up bailout with $140 billion for hard left community organizers and they gain votes?
And sticking in a drilling ban when the economy needs all the help it can get – how can this win more support for Bambi? To me it just doesn’t add up. Somebody needs to get the Republican’s story out there and fast.

The Democrats caused the mess with their bad policies of getting loans to low income people who couldnt afford the loans.
But, it doesnt matter that the dem’s caused the mess. The Republicans in the house of reps are doing what they can to stop this deal and the country will be hurt and people will be justified in blaming republicans for not doing the right thing when it was needed.
And McCain’s stunt of suspending his campaign so he could slow down or screw up the deal that our president and Greenspan and actual experts on the economy (unlike McCain) are trying to get done is already costing his dumb ass in the polls.

FiveWays on September 26, 2008 at 2:48 PM
Of course he’s down.
The finance crisis and bailout bill are terrifying.
And the main work McCain has done (politically speaking) over the last few days is getting himself firmly wedded with the crisis.
That means he gets the brunt of the fear and panic. But it gives him a huge potential upside if, come Monday and Tuesday, it’s clear that things are going to be alright. (Likely to be the case if a bill really does get passed Sunday night.)
There will, of course, be all kinds of partisan debate about whether McCain helped or hurt negotiations, or whether he was pulling a political stunt or putting Country First. But ALL of the debate will be about what McCain accomplished or didn’t accomplish — while Obama was letting folks know that he was ready to help if they needed him.
Poker analogy:
Yes, the stack of chips in front of John McCain is way down — but not because he’s lost them, just because he’s put them into the pot. Too soon to tell whether it was a canny bet.
ClintACK on September 26, 2008 at 2:48 PM
Who makes up these polls? Do they use that Bistro Math that propels starships. Seriously, how can any take these polls at face value. They swing so much day to day, hour to hour and are take so frequently that they are basically useless.
Tommy_G on September 26, 2008 at 2:48 PM
I don’t think you understand what he’s saying.
“The public,” or at least thost polled, perceive it this way. That’s what the polling data is showing. It might not be reality, but in politics, perception is reality.
And the public perception at current is that (for some reason) the person and party who caused this ginormous f*cking mess is, er, better equipped to get the market out of it.
It doesn’t make sense to those interested in the facts, but to the rest of us, that’s how it comes off.
And by “us,” I mean those voters polled.

They have to be disparate to win the White House right now if for no other reason than to prevent the investigations that will certainly lead to criminal indictments.

Yeah, just wait until the FBI shows up at your door in February ‘09, because they tracked the IP addresses of all Hotair.com members. Followed by Rush, Hannity, O’Reilly, etc. all getting taken off the air by the “Fairness Doctrine.” Followed by the most liberal members of the 9th Circuit Court being named to the Supreme Court. Followed by the Great Handgun Roundup at your local police station. Followed by Abortions-R-Us at your kids’ elementary school. Followed by the biggest tax increase in world history. Followed by U.S. embassies around getting sacked by terrorists, and Americans taken hostage. Followed by China doing whatever it wants, anywhere in the world. Followed by $300/barrel oil, and $10/gallon gasoline.
It’s the Carter Administration, all over again. And you know what? I’ll bet Osama Bin Laden sketched it all out on a cocktail napkin back in 1992.

Good News! The election is NOT today! But there will be a debate tonight!
If the debate is really about foreign policy (the original intended subject) McCain will eat Obama’s lunch–akin to the Cheney/Edwards debate of 2004.
If the moderator asks either candidate about the bailout bill, McCain needs to come out all-guns-blazing about how Obama derailed the negotiations, and wanted taxpayer money semt to ACORN, which has been accused of voter fraud in several states. “My friends, do you want a President who doesn’t know how to negotiate with Congress?”
It ain’t over yet, folks! It ain’t even started!

Are you kidding?
First off, there won’t be a deal until after the debate. The dems will not let that happen when there’s plenty more politics to milk from this thing.
Secondly, McCain will get credit for this thing when it fails. If anything, they will claim McCain pushed through an imperfect bill for his political gain.
In other words, McCain is screwed either way.
He took a gamble on an issue that everyone thought was the top issue on America’s minds: the economy.
What he didn’t count on, is that, the issue on everyone’s minds is exactly what the media tells them it is. …and the top issue in the media’s minds is getting Obama elected.
We knew it was coming 4 years ago at the DNC speech. Now, it’s coming to fruition.
I used to subscribe to email newsletters from the DNC just to see what they were talking about, so I would get an email every month or so from Howard Dean basically filled with ‘Bush Suxx’ with absolutely nothing else.
One of them about a year ago said they had the people and things in place that would not only guarantee the ‘08 election for a democrat but a democrat majority for many years to come.
The conspiracy theorist side of me always kept that in the back of my mind, wondering what they had up their sleeves. I think the constant politicizing of everything the past 8 years is starting to pay off for the democrats. Fear and Anger lead to irrational decisions, and Obama is just that. Couple an Obama ‘presidency’ with a super-majority in Congress, throw in the Fairness Doctrine and you’ll have a ‘government’ ten times more corrupt and secretive than the libs ever dreamed Bush/Cheney could be.
But maybe that’s all in my tin-foil hat.

Listen to the media, and the Dems in particular: “How dare McCain inject politics into this?!” The statement is so blatantly self-contradictory and hypocritical that it’s comical, or should be. Instead of whining about it, you should be laughing.

OK for the umpteenth time I will repeat myself. Every election cycle we go through this and after every election the talking heads wonder why we bother following polls because they are meaningless. The only polling that matters is the internal polling of the campaigns. They know who they can count on to come out and vote for them, who the opposition is counting on and how many of the undecideds they can convince to come out.
The polls keep rollercoaster-ing because pollsters understand that the only way they remain relevant is to be needed. And you are only needed when you can show swings.
McCain will get 53% of the vote thanks in equal parts to his demonstrating his leadership skills and Sarah Palin. They tried to f-Bush in 2000 and 2004 with these polls and even more importantly, gave us the same song and dance with electoral projections.
None of this means we can be complacent. But, if you let yourself get wrapped up in these numbers with more than a month to go, you will go insane — as so many do this close to the election every four years.

You may not agree with the whole bailout (I certainly don’t) but this is brilliant politics on his part. The October Surprise is that Obama is going to be the Perfect Storm headed right for the Obama campaign and their being stuck having to defend rather than attack.
Regardless of what the media says or those idiots at FactCheck, McCain and other pro-McCain groups are going to open up Obama like a warm peanut. Rezko, Wright, the Fannie connections, Ayers, Obama at the gym while McCain works to save the economy. If you think this was McCain’s last desparate gamble, you really don’t know politics.
Ebb and flow friends, ebb and flow. Timing is everything and while I don’t agree with the bailout and wish it would just die, the leadership McCain is showing is brilliant and is going to come back to bite Obama.

Something stinkith about these polls. Kerry should be president according to the polls taken in 2004.
So, don’t pay attention to polls.

Now I see. 48% of America is racist, and 6% haven’t decided yet if they’re racist.

…the “press secretary” of another “community organizer” last century once extolled the merits of lying to people…tell the lie big enough, often enough, and folks will believe it….
…that’s all these polls are…they plumb the depths of peoples’ lack of actual news…they can only respond with vague feelings and ill-informed opinions.
Unfortunately, a lot of people, their brains beaten as flat as a tortilla by a sold-out media, will take some of those raw feelings into the voting booths with them….
