Pelosi: Democrats don’t have the votes to pass the bailout bill; Update: Vote unlikely before Wednesday?

posted at 6:05 pm on September 26, 2008 by Allahpundit

A likely excuse.

“We don’t have the votes to do it on our own,” Pelosi told reporters.

Pelosi said many House Democrats still have strong reservations about the bill, especially if it does not include bankruptcy protections or does not include a way to pay for the massive $700 billion price tag…

Pelosi acknowledged that at first glance, the bill was “very unpopular” among the American people. However, Pelosi highlighted new polling data stating that the majority of Americans favor some form of government intervention to calm jittery financial markets.

Probably just her way of building leverage for some of those left-wing goodies they want in the final package, but I don’t know. There must be a few Blue Dogs looking at the polling on this and getting nervous. How long does the leadership have to pass something before people on their own side start defecting and the whole thing turns into Amnesty Debacle redux? Or am I just being naive, and in fact this is a classic Pelosi gambit a la her original maneuvering on drilling in which she encourages House members whose reelection prospects are dicey to vote however they need to knowing that she’ll get her way anyway? In fact, losing a few Democratic votes arguably makes it easier for her to claim that support for the bill is bipartisan, since it means that the few votes they already have among the House GOP will be decisive, not mere ornamentation.

Update: Debaclemania!

*cough* tax increase *cough*

Why are the democrats adding 56 billion dollars if they can’t afford 700 billion already?

Well I have an opinion on what she’s saying, but I don’t have any facts. We need JackM to chime in and tell us what is going on, on the floor.

I don’t think a vote is likely until next Wednesday myself.

There is much ammunition for McCain over the last few days (actually months, but I digress).

So when Obama tries to hang it on McCain for queering the deal (we must honor Mr. Fwank), he can respond with the fact there was no deal per Ms. Pelosi saying there aren’t enough Democrats. Then ask Senator Obama if he would like him to help him get the Democrats on board.

I have some questions about the GOP bill. I was reading a short post by Jennifer Rubin and she is no friend to Democrats, but she had some good questions about the GOP bill. Like is it feasable and doable. How does the insurance actually work? How is it different from the insurance these institutions already have? What does it do about debt? I have no idea, but if the debt is not dealt with in some way, how does it help the problem.

I know that Republicans do not want some big government bailout they do not understand shoved down their throat, I get that…but I have to be honest. I don’t know for sure if the GOP would cost less in the long run or not. I don’t know how exactly it would effect growth and that in turn effects tax income..all that. All I know is that the GOP says it has a lower outlay of cash up front, but I still don’t know how it works.

I just wish they would come up with a compromise that they could pass and we could move on. Economics is not a good issue for the GOP in an election year. We need to get this done.

The market is on a emotional roller coaster and will probably continue to do so even after a bill is passed. What really needs to be done is to make the lenders responsible for repaying any bail out by the taxpayer. Those that cannot should be allowed to fail. Other investors will see bargains galore and will start pumping cash into the market. There’s a lot of money sitting on the fence waiting for congress to make a decision. Also, there need to be a public accounting by the congress to out the players that got us into this mess.

NOw we hear of a CEO of WAMU who was paid 50 million dollars after only 17 days of work!

Why the heck is that allowed? THAT is why I am against the bailout!

So they [the Government] go on in strange paradox, decided only to be undecided, resolved to be irresolute, adamant for drift, solid for fluidity, all-powerful to be impotent.

Obama supports the Paulson plan. It’s McCain who does not support any plan.

Apparently plenty of democrats don’t support the Paulson plan either, as evidenced by Allah titling this thread, “Pelosi: Democrats don’t have the votes to pass the bailout bill.”

Scroll up and see for yourself (its the bar over on the right of your screen).
