Minnesota DFL tactics: steal lawn signs

While we have relatively clean government in Minnesota, sometimes the politics of elections here can get positively criminal — or at least ridiculously petty. In this case, we can add “tremendously stupid”. A campaign volunteer for DFL Congressional candidate Ashwin Madia stole lawn signs advertising the Republican candidate, Eric Paulsen, and got caught on camera doing it:
My NARN colleague Michael Brodkorb happened to be at the Perkins restaurant across the street and captured the incident on tape:
I always carry at least one video camera with me at all times, so I gave my video camera to my friend and he filmed the woman walking back into the Perkins’ parking lot with the Paulsen for Congress lawn signs. When confronted, the woman first claimed she was just “a private citizen…” But after I noticed the car she was driving had a Ashwin Madia for Congress bumper sticker, she admitted that she “also happened to be a Madia volunteer.”
According to multiple sources who have seen the video, the car driven by the Madia volunteer who took the Paulsen for Congress lawn signs has been identified as being owned by Madia’s communications director Dan Pollock. This is the same Dan Pollock who claimed this week that Madia is running a “very positive, issue-oriented campaign”:
“‘[Team Madia is ] running a very positive, issue-oriented campaign,’ Pollock said.” Source: Sun Newspapers, September 23, 2008
Having your communications director’s car used as a get-a-way vehicle doesn’t help build the case that you’re “…running a very positive, issue-oriented campaign.”
What’s dumber than stealing lawn signs? Getting caught stealing lawn signs. What’s even dumber than that? Using a campaign official’s car as your get-away vehicle. Why didn’t they just hold a press conference and let the media watch the Madia Sign Theft Operation in action?
You have to love the rationalization of this young woman for her thievery. The signs were on a public right-of-way? Then call the police to deal with it, or the city offices. Who gave her the authority to enforce public law? Did she get an Ashwin Madia Junior City Inspector Badge with that free bumper sticker?
A few years ago, state Rep. Phyllis Kahn, another DFL politician, got convicted for stealing her opponent’s literature from the doorstep of constituents. I guess this is just a continuing DFL strategy here in Minnesota. It could be worse, though. At least Madia isn’t threatening the broadcast licenses of stations that air criticism of him.

Randy, I feel your pain, really. I want to go to Wash and strangle a few of my representatives and shout in their faces “Why the hell aren’t you DOING anything!?” or some such. Apparently “lie down and take it” has become the new MO.

You can’t seem to decide if you want to argue the “sign stealer’s” case or your own case for taking the video down. But you’re making a great case for being a condescending person.
Goodbye.

“…I am a private citizen…”
“…they were in the public right-of-way…”
…in the business of disinformation, this is known as boilerplate…the response to being confronted when doing something nakedly wrong is pre-digested and spit down between the upturned halves of your gaping beak so’s you can spit them out on cue….
…who says “public right-of-way”, a legalistic phrase, if you’re not either a) a rather junior, inexperienced lawyer, or b) a schlemiel who’s been briefed by a) above?
…check out Goldberg’s “Liberal Fascism”…the end justifies the means…if you’re convinced that you (and your candidate and your party) are pure-of-heart….

You put a Republican sign in your lawn in Seattle, there is a pretty good chance it will get stolen or vandalized.
If you put a sticker on your car, you better have a car alarm.
29Victor on September 26, 2008 at 3:15 PM
Cindy I bought a very nice condo in a very established (but liberal) neighbothood. I walked out, got in my car and was driving to work.. when I saw the sign was “crispy”, when earlier the previous day it was fine. So I was pretty alarmed about it. Even if I don’t care for BHO… I wouldn’t do that.

I’ve noticed in Los Angeles city proper, there have been NO McCain bumper stickers let alone lawn signs. (I’ve seen houses in Pasadena with McCain law signs.) Yet there are plenty of Obama signs and stickers. Conservatives don’t put stickers on their cars here because they know it’ll be ripped off at the best and their car vandalized at the worst.

I mentioned weeks ago that my sis-in-law lives at the North Pole (not with Santa Claus, but the resemblance is striking). “Santa” worked for years up on the north slope. I’m trying to find out if Santa worked with The First Dude. I suppose the North Slope is actually a big place with a few people or a big place with a lot of people. Not much chance they actually knew each other. Just wondering…
BTW: Work is a drag for me too. I’m looking forward to the debate just to finally see them square off (even if a little bit).

I’m sure that sign had a comment at the bottom, in 6 point, about the rummage sale being held to support the candidate next week.
In most locales, it is legal to post rummage sale signs in the public right of way for a limited length of time
OBQuiet on September 26, 2008 at 3:47 PM
No, litter is not litter.
Campaign signs, during campaign seasons are legally protected. There are special laws dealing with that, otherwise it would be a free for all. Anyone could pick a sign up and say it was “in the street” and litter. Like this girl did. She had no authority to determine what was public right of way, public domain, public easement, all of them are covered under campaign laws. If you place a sign purposely it is not abandoned, where did you ever get that idea? After the election (usually 30 days), then they become a “nuisance” and are removed at the candidates expense.
Cities have ordinances defining what is litter, and campaign signs (during the campaign season) have their own ordinances. One of them is, you cannot remove a campaign sign as a private citizen…period. Otherwise what this chick did, anyone could claim, and there would be chaos. That is what election officials are for, that is what your town or city governing bodies are for.
I hope you never park on a public area, you car would be considered litter and picked up and thrown away…

I would be surprised to see alphie banned. He’s irritating but in a satisfying sort of way. Kind of like your favorite place to scratch ;-)
Mr_Magoo on September 26, 2008 at 3:59 PM
true but if we leave it up to the candidate they’ll never pick them up… most say the year and are worn and unwanted… only the tightest campaigns recycle signs for four or 2 years later…
and should we make laws saying don’t pick up trash on the side of the road… let the city or county do it? that’s ridiculous… we pay those people to work, not to clean up after politicians…
they should be forced to put their name on every sign and when the election is over they should have 10 days to clean it up or they get fined for every sign…
if it’s not your property then you have no business putting a sign there… and anyone who cares about this country should find themselves leaning down to pick up some trash every day…
Kaptain Amerika on September 26, 2008 at 3:59 PM
Been here almost three years and all of these clowns eventually get banned. They get more and more adamant about their positions, their hate (and the liberals are full of hate) just boils over and they can’t help themselves.
Next will be…I won’t tip my hand, but I have a pretty good idea of what troll will be next. I can see them boiling over, and becoming more strident as they are being more ridiculed.

TheSitRep on September 26, 2008 at 4:09 PM
right2bright,
Don’t know where you live, but where I live there is no such law protecting illegally posted signs of any sort.
My last post on this silliness, so that you all may understand a little of where I am coming from.
Many years ago I ran for office, and won. During the campaign one very liberal, can I say Ass@ole kept putting signs in right of ways. He was not running against me. I told my people to pick them up, write on the sign where they got them and bring them back to HQ. We picked 40 signs. I called the Dim Jerk and told him I had 40 of his signs and I KNEW he had nothing to do with them being in right or ways and I just wanted to save him the $10 fine for each sign. He could come pick them up. He when ballistic, who gave you the right to take my signs, blah blah. I told him I was trying to help him, but if he wanted me to turn them in for the reward I would.
He called the liberal paper, is their any other kind, and complained about us taking his signs. They called me and I said, damn right I took his signs and he can have them back or I collect the reward.
The was the last I heard from him, and the paper made him look like a total jerk, SORT OF LIKE THIS VIDEO MAKES US LOOK LIKE.

Try again:
http://www.dot.state.mn.us/govrel/rw_signs.html
The Federal Highway Administration office in Minnesota monitors Minnesota’s compliance with federal highway beautification laws. State transportation employees are responsible for administering these laws on state highways and must remove signs that violate the laws. County, city, and township employees administer these laws on their roads.Contact your local Mn/DOT office for assistance when signs are being placed where the specific highway right-of-way cannot be clearly identified. When improperly placed signs are removed by department employees, every effort will be made to temporarily store the sign and to notify the owner where the signs can be retrieved.
http://www.dot.state.mn.us/d4/newsrels/08/08-August/14_campaignsigns.html
The signs are treated as trash only when they are unclaimed. They are IMPOUNDED and the campaign can retreive them.
So again, what power is given to private citizens to enforce their incorrect interpretation of state laws as it regards campaign sign placement?
h0mi on September 26, 2008 at 4:11 PM
A PHX area mayor, Harry Mitchell, was caught personally stealing campaign signs. Guess what? He was thereafter elected to the US House of Representatives.

Don’t take this personally. Different places have different rules. But don’t get excited about this video either. This is a goof video, where everyone gets to remark about their experiences (like you have) and no one is going to go to jail or get their reputation ruined or try to figure out who the chick is. One time there was a huge thread about the stage at the DNC convention. There is so much really serious stuff going on that this is just a silly thread.
Cindy Munford on September 26, 2008 at 4:16 PM
So were your volunteers doing this in the dark and would they have run away if confronted or calmly and civily responded. I think your case is the exception that does not prove the rule. Mr_Magoo on September 26, 2008 at 4:20 PM
You could probably choose any three names and be close…it ain’t rocket science.
What I have noticed, and Cindy pointed it out. There are more and more trolls popping up. It is like a “sleeper” cell, they sign up and then wait. Then they post some little stupid thing like “I hate the liberals” and “I have never voted for a Democrat in my life”, but McCain made a mistake and I am going to have to….blah blah.
MB4 is the best at that, pretending to be a republican, but never quite supporting republican ideas…they always are just not “right”. Then when you catch him on his errors, this is his retort “you are stalking me”, which is what I told a person who still posts here that once and she went berserk. She is a good conservative, she just went way in the tank for Mitt, and I jerked her chain too many times. So I can’t fault him for using such a good tactic, since it was mine.
But I find him kind of cute in his “I hate McCain” kind of way, a little strange, but endearing as a troll.
right2bright on September 26, 2008 at 4:20 PM
This link has a link to a pdf which was a Minnesota DOT letter to candidates reminding them about where signs can and cannot be posted. In Texas, we call that stealing. Campaigns are allowed to post removable signs where others cannot, but the campaigns then have the responsibility to pick them up.

Down here in Alabama, we sit on the front porch swing with a shotgun, watching our McCain signs, otherwise known as “bait”.

NC now, but ran campaigns in Ca for years. You cannot legally take down your opponents signs, I am sure there are some rural areas that don’t have laws. The the ones with campaign laws are explicit. You may not know them, or maybe even have them. But you cannot remove your opponents signs, can’t move them, remove them, mark them, burn them, run over them, shoot them, paint them, pee on them…
Too many to link, but just google campaign sign laws.
In Texas:
This is from Washington D.C., this is a new one:
For upinak:
Denver:
Rhode Island (I would be wrong up there)
Cheasapeak law:
VA
That’s enough, if you read through, most do not want citizens to remove signs (Long Island is an exception), because it becomes a he said, she said type of thing. The mostly want it reported, then fines can be assessed. Which helps the city, and hurts your opponent.

And here is the really bad news for Miss Private Citizen here in MN:
No matter where those signs are, save on her private property, she is forbidden by law to remove them.
Miss Real Estate Attorney Private Citizen needs to be charged.

Sorry, but she was in the right. She has every right to pick up litter on public property. That is exactly what she did.

Also, the “call the authorities” line is too funny to laugh at. If I didn’t remove all the yard sale signs in my neighborhood, well, you can guess what it would look like.
I’ve also removed illegally posted campaign signs. Attention politicians: You do not own parkways, street signs, telephone polls, etc. I can take ‘em down just as fast as you put ‘em up.

This happened to a Conservative talk radio host locally here in Tucson with his McCain lawn sign just yesterday. HE WENT OFF!! He’s now trying to get McCain wraps on cars… “Come steal this one B!0t%&.”

Liberals.
Fixing elections via ACORN.
Vandalizing the property of War Veterans.
Vandalizing Marine Corps recruiter stations.
Spitting on Veterans.
Stealing election signs from the opposition.
Claiming they are victims.
Yep, not much has changed in Liberal land from 1960’s.
Recreate 68 indeed.

…concur…the woman’s out after dark pulling a police call? “They were in the public right-of-way”? A concerned citizen picking up those pesky, slippery campaign signs which notoriously litter Minnesota sidewalks…and makes her way to a trash can with only signs…didn’t bother to go after styrofoam cups, cigarette butts or condoms, I suppose.
…and she does all this, again, at night, skulking. Now, I know skulking. I’m a skulker from way back…world class skulker, me(alternate on the ‘80 Olympic team…damn you, Jimmy Carter). Speaks defensively while skulking (first rule of skulking: brazen it out), and only has the signs of the opponent of the guy (gal?) whose bumper sticker (they’re free!) adorns her car.
…suspicious. I can, as a veteran skulker, four-flusher, cad and all-’round ne’er-do-well, spot the sort of skulduggery I excel at, even when being performed by brain-dead amateurs.
…so, defending the purity of ne’er-do-wellism, I am shocked — shocked, I say — to see this sock-puppet out lamely trying to deny doing what it’s so obvious she’s doing….
…I mean, it smells. Smells bad. Barney Frank breath bad…Pelosi swivel-chair seat bad….
I leave you with that mental image….
