Minnesota DFL tactics: steal lawn signs
posted at 2:00 pm on September 26, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
While we have relatively clean government in Minnesota, sometimes the politics of elections here can get positively criminal — or at least ridiculously petty. In this case, we can add “tremendously stupid”. A campaign volunteer for DFL Congressional candidate Ashwin Madia stole lawn signs advertising the Republican candidate, Eric Paulsen, and got caught on camera doing it:
My NARN colleague Michael Brodkorb happened to be at the Perkins restaurant across the street and captured the incident on tape:
I always carry at least one video camera with me at all times, so I gave my video camera to my friend and he filmed the woman walking back into the Perkins’ parking lot with the Paulsen for Congress lawn signs. When confronted, the woman first claimed she was just “a private citizen…” But after I noticed the car she was driving had a Ashwin Madia for Congress bumper sticker, she admitted that she “also happened to be a Madia volunteer.”
According to multiple sources who have seen the video, the car driven by the Madia volunteer who took the Paulsen for Congress lawn signs has been identified as being owned by Madia’s communications director Dan Pollock. This is the same Dan Pollock who claimed this week that Madia is running a “very positive, issue-oriented campaign”:
“‘[Team Madia is ] running a very positive, issue-oriented campaign,’ Pollock said.” Source: Sun Newspapers, September 23, 2008
Having your communications director’s car used as a get-a-way vehicle doesn’t help build the case that you’re “…running a very positive, issue-oriented campaign.”
What’s dumber than stealing lawn signs? Getting caught stealing lawn signs. What’s even dumber than that? Using a campaign official’s car as your get-away vehicle. Why didn’t they just hold a press conference and let the media watch the Madia Sign Theft Operation in action?
You have to love the rationalization of this young woman for her thievery. The signs were on a public right-of-way? Then call the police to deal with it, or the city offices. Who gave her the authority to enforce public law? Did she get an Ashwin Madia Junior City Inspector Badge with that free bumper sticker?
A few years ago, state Rep. Phyllis Kahn, another DFL politician, got convicted for stealing her opponent’s literature from the doorstep of constituents. I guess this is just a continuing DFL strategy here in Minnesota. It could be worse, though. At least Madia isn’t threatening the broadcast licenses of stations that air criticism of him.

Now if a Republican did this crap, the Minnesota news would have been all over this.

It’s 2004 all over again. That year, I happened to be looking outside when a woman walking by our house pulled our lawn sign off the metal frame and walked away with it. I went out and confronted her, asking for the sign back – she had already crumpled it up (it was one of the plastic ones) but sheepishly gave it back.
Best part? It was the middle of the day. This woman hated Bush enough to commit her little crime of defiance in broad daylight.

In the 2004 election cycle here in Toledo I noticed a number of Bush signs trashed. Not one Kerry sign was.

Setting them on fire in front of peoples houses!
I don’t agree with this, since they aren’t cheap either. But around Anchorage, someone is setting the Obama signs on fire. I am waiting for them to get caught.
And stealing the McCain Palin signs are getting out of hand.

Keyed cars, slashed tires, defaced bumper stickers and yard signs.
Only ever happens to ads for Republican candidates. Gee, what a friggin’ surprise.

Same here in Washington state. Someone tore my sign in half and threw it on the ground within a couple of days of its appearance on the corner of an intersection near my house. I taped it back up and put a note on it, explaining what happened to it…it then stayed up two weeks, before some lefty just stole it completely.

Public Right Of Way.
Right lady!
Tell you what. Up here in Illinois on I-294 just outside of OHare Field, we have a slew full of positively annoying billboards along the expresseway that are definitely in the public’s right of way!
You can come down here anytime you want so as to take them all down.
And with the number of them that are there, it should keep you busy all the way past Election Day.

I live in MN and this is VERY common in MN for Democrats to steal the signs…I thought the local media picked this up in a past election.
I was talking to a friend of mine recently, because he has a couple of McCain signs on his lawn. But he has them near his house because of the sign stealing and damage to some houses in the previous years
Conagher on September 26, 2008 at 2:11 PM
For this reason do I not even put bumper stickers on my car for fear the leftists will do damage to it.

Hey, This video is BULL S*it.
The girl is right a sign in a public right of way should and CAN be removed by anyone.
We have better things to do then put signs in public right of ways, that’s what Dims do.
Take this stupid video down, it makes us look petty.
How do I really feel?

Oh, but she’s a real estate attorney, so that makes it okay.
Anyone call Madia and ask him about this behavior?
I’m ready to call the state AG office to get the AFL/CIO to stop sending me Franken/DFL lit and getting their phone calls, since they apparently believe I’m a union member, but I’m not. I called the MN AFL/CIO last week, and I’m still getting this crap in my mailbox.
Blue-eyed Infidel on September 26, 2008 at 2:13 PM
“They were in the public right of way”, what exactly was her point? Regardless of where they are, taking them is stealing. Should have called her bluff and called the city. Didn’t like that woman’s snooty attitude and all knowing superiority. But it is what I have come to expect from the left. They really do think that they are smarter and better than the rest of us and that their opinions on everything are more important.
Had an interesting experience at the grocery store recently. Pulled in next to a car (a Prius no less) with magnet Obama bumper sticker on each side of the car. Just for a prank I was going to turn the stickers upside down. At the last second I stopped, didn’t want to be charged with a hat crime.

I’ve seen candidates make TV ads out of this stuff. Votrs do get sick of all the signs, but they don’t like dirty tricks eeither. I’ve also been told than in many cities the unions pay people go out out at night and take down Republican signs.
rockmom on September 26, 2008 at 2:16 PM
According to one of the posters on the DFL Exposed site:
In my hometown of Culver City, we had a similar incident in which the City removed political signage, claiming a safety concern. The city had laws quite similar to those the poster states are present for Maple Grove. The Culver City law was found to be unconstitutional because it permitted some types of speech but prevented political speech.
The poster of the law above thinks that taking down the signs was correct. I suspect he/she is in for a surprise.

I’m in a glass house on this one. Back in college in ’88 we stole some Jesse Jackson signs. The difference is we returned them after carefully modifying them to say Jesse Jacksoff.

The city would not have shown up, you are wrong. Signs in public right of ways, ours or theirs should be removed. They are traffic hazards and eye sores.
Her point is you can not use public property to advertise for anything or anyone. That shouldn’t be too hard to figure out here.
Take the stupid video down!

I admire the guy in the film for not slapping the girl after her thirty-fifth or so “they’re in a public right of way”.
jackmac on September 26, 2008 at 2:19 PM
Why? Why take a video down?
Do you have a guilty conscience concerning this?
Everywhere in the U.S. they use PUBLIC property to put signs up. Yeah it may be in the right of way.. but those new and beautiful laws that say you can’t touch those signs (for either party) to move them either.
So who is wrong or right?
The D.O.T. could have moved them. Or the Campaign. She didn’t need to take it upon herself.
So get a grip!

Yup. I learned my lesson when some guy tried to run my motorcycle off the road ‘cuz I had a Bush sticker on my carry-crate. Those Obama-folk need to point a vidcam out the window and gen up a warm welcome, like an acquaintance of mine who kept having rocks thrown through his dining room windows facing the front. They were diamond shaped glass, and expensive to replace. He caught a kid who lived on the block tossing a rock — kid didn’t even see the lens from the sidewalk, but it saw him. I suspect that the McCain/Palin signs are being taken souvenirs more than for malicious reasons. But burning lawn signs is vaguely like burning crosses.

If the signs were in the public right of way, does that give you permission to steal them? As a conscientious citizen wouldn’t the responsible thing have been to contact the authorities so they could take appropriate action against the perpetrators who surely were guilty of capital crimes.

What do we not believe the rules are for EVERYONE. Does a GOP candidate get to violate the rules?
What are you people smoking, the rules apply to everyone. In my district the city is suppose to take the signs down and fine you $10 a sign. City worker are too lazy to even pick up the signs.
Here’s a question, I am coming off the ramp and I can not see the traffic because of some illegally posted sign and I have a wreck. Who do you think I am going to be pissed at?

If the rules were broken, it’s not the responsibility of the competing campaign to remove the signs no matter your opinion of the local city workers. If someone were to illegally hang a sign from a bridge, are you going to crawl out and remove it, or call the cops or the city?
Your faux outrage is laughable.

I would love to be able to put a Norm Coleman or Michele Bachmann bumper sticker on my car, but I don’t want to get my car keyed, or spray painted, or egged. Life is just too short to go through all that.

Last month a large sign blocked my view of oncoming traffic. I sent an email to the local candidate and politely asked her to reposition the sign. It came down the by the end of the day and she emailed me back thanking me for my concern. She never did reposition it so I assume she placed it elsewhere.
A couple of days later, another candidate used the signposts to lean an even bigger sign against them. Crap!
But at least I felt I did the right thing. I could have ripped it off the posts and thrown it away and then acted like an a$$hole, but I didn’t.

Taking something that is not yours is theft, eve if it is the public right of way.
If someone had a lawn chair on the right of way, are you allowed to help yourself to the chair? A car that is double parked illegally, can you take the car, since it was parked illegally?
I may not know much, but I still think it is theft, regardless of whether it was posted correctly or not.
bopbottle on September 26, 2008 at 2:37 PM
I’m with Kemp on this one. Signs placed in the public right of way are abandoned property. What right did she have to pull the sign? Every right. She’s cleaning up litter. That she may have been selective does not bother me at all. Litter is litter.
Whoever posted about the bill board: Please be real. You must understand that billboards are constructed on somebody’s property and typically rented by someone. That’s a lot different than placing yard signs where they don’t belong.

I’ve worked campaigns here in MN and I know that area where that wench took the signs. First, you cannot tell from that video if the signs were on public property, second… that area has private business all over, third…. you don’t tell people what to do here….. and fourth… the police are vigilant. Nothing petty about this posted video.
MNDavenotPC on September 26, 2008 at 2:39 PM
Have you never been on a political blog?
We don’t know where the signs actually were. The one she is carrying in the video is quite small, and campaign signs are generally not high enough off of the ground to block the line of sight of traffic, come on now.
You know they weren’t on a private business or a residence?

During the Bush/Cheney election I had a sticker on my bumper. Walked out of a shopping mall, during the day, and some guy was ripping off the bumper sticker of my car. He had a girl and a guy watching. I ran up and planted a my shoe on his butt, his head hit the car he spun around…saw that I was an old man (but 6’2 and 220 and not fat), said he was going to call the police, just then a police car pulled up (like that never happens). They were claiming assault, and I claimed if it was assault the punk would still be on the ground.
They got a little talking to, they took each of the drivers license and ran them. Ended up the girl had several outstanding parking tickets, I drove off with them still being held by the police…it was sweet. But my wife was pissed off. What if he had a gun, a knife, they could have jumped you, she didn’t understand, they are liberal punks…just like this girl was, lying liberal punks.

Wrong, on most jurisdiction you place the signs on public property, but they have to be set back a certain number of feet.
The only ones allowed to remove signs are city officials. If there is a number of signs in offense, then the campaign can be fined and charged for taking the signs down.
Public not meaning government owned, but public domain, public right of way or easement.
No on or off ramps, except some ordinances allow with proper set backs.

You are sooooo wrong. You have no idea what the county laws were in that video.
You have no way of knowing if those were on public or private. And you have no way of knowing whether that area was even covered by a sign ordinance. Many counties do not have sign ordinances for campaigns. Most cities do.
In other words, you have a video of a democrat stealing signs, with no proof that she had the right to do that. I know of no ordinance that allows the competitor to take the signs of their opponent down, complain yes, take, no.
She had no idea if the other campaign had a variance for that corner, which is often allowed during campaign season.
Looks like you don’t know as much as you thought…
BTW, here the little harpy say she was a “real estate attorney”, wrong thing to say. Good way to get disbarred.
