Debate commissioner: If McCain doesn’t show, it’s cancelled; Update: McCain says he’ll be there; Update: AP poll says public wants debate to go on, 60/22

Ole Miss wants a townhall with The One if Maverick bails, but don’t expect the Debate Commission to participate, says Frank Fahrenkopf. To do so would constitute an in-kind campaign contribution. Where would that leave us tonight, though? If Obama’s willing and the university’s willing and the networks (surely) are willing, can’t they just usher Jim Lehrer and Commission personnel out the door and go on with the show?
Probably a moot question: Grahamnesty’s already lowering the bar for what needs to happen on the hill today to get McCain to go. And Obama’s encouraging him not to be, ahem, “fearful.”
Update: Just into my inbox, half an hour before Fahrenkopf’s noon deadline, the inevitable announcement that Maverick will not, in fact, be ceding a national spotlight to Barack Obama.
Statement By McCain Campaign On Negotiations
John McCain’s decision to suspend his campaign was made in the hopes that politics could be set aside to address our economic crisis.
In response, Americans saw a familiar spectacle in Washington. At a moment of crisis that threatened the economic security of American families, Washington played the blame game rather than work together to find a solution that would avert a collapse of financial markets without squandering hundreds of billions of taxpayers’ money to bailout bankers and brokers who bet their fortunes on unsafe lending practices.
Both parties in both houses of Congress and the administration needed to come together to find a solution that would deserve the trust of the American people. And while there were attempts to do that, much of yesterday was spent fighting over who would get the credit for a deal and who would get the blame for failure. There was no deal or offer yesterday that had a majority of support in Congress. There was no deal yesterday that included adequate protections for the taxpayers. It is not enough to cut deals behind closed doors and then try to force it on the rest of Congress — especially when it amounts to thousands of dollars for every American family.
The difference between Barack Obama and John McCain was apparent during the White House meeting yesterday where Barack Obama’s priority was political posturing in his opening monologue defending the package as it stands. John McCain listened to all sides so he could help focus the debate on finding a bipartisan resolution that is in the interest of taxpayers and homeowners. The Democratic interests stood together in opposition to an agreement that would accommodate additional taxpayer protections.
Senator McCain has spent the morning talking to members of the Administration, members of the Senate, and members of the House. He is optimistic that there has been significant progress toward a bipartisan agreement now that there is a framework for all parties to be represented in negotiations, including Representative Blunt as a designated negotiator for House Republicans. The McCain campaign is resuming all activities and the Senator will travel to the debate this afternoon. Following the debate, he will return to Washington to ensure that all voices and interests are represented in the final agreement, especially those of taxpayers and homeowners.
Do we know yet which proposal, exactly, McCain supports? Or is he going to leave off at having gotten the House GOP back to the table to discuss “taxpayer protections”?
Update: Sounds like the latter. “We need a deal. We need a deal. We need a deal.”
John McCain made an urgent appeal to House Republicans at their 9:30 leadership meeting Friday morning.
A senior House GOP leadership aide involved in the negotiations described McCain’s message this way, “We need a deal. We need a deal. We need a deal.”…
House Republicans seem poised to cave on this (says one House Republican, “We don’t want to be seen as obstructionists”), although they have been assured that some of their ideas can be incorporated into the final deal.
Specifically, House GOP leaders want the bill to include federal mortgage insurance as an alternative to the wholesale buying of mortgage securities.
Update: Geraghty thinks McCain should have skipped it, camped out at the Capitol, and delivered progress reports for the GOP while The One floundered at a townhall meeting. I disagree. Hill Democrats would have spent the evening howling about how McCain’s presence has only made things worse and Obama doubtless would have used the time at the townhall to push his own economic plan. We’ve had no fewer than three polls thus far show that majorities wanted the debate to go on. The public will want to know why McCain couldn’t have spared a few hours and he won’t have a good answer.
Update: Make that four polls. A new one from the AP shows a 60/22 split on whether the debate should go on.

Debate aint happening!
grapeknutz on September 26, 2008 at 11:08 AM
Who cares about a stupid debate that can be run every single day after this financial legislation is taken care of?
All of this crying about “the debate” is pathetic. People are acting as if putting the debate off for three or four days would be such a terrible event. I mean, are people even listening to themselves?
progressoverpeace on September 26, 2008 at 11:09 AM
So if McCain decides to stay in DC, Obama will say McCain was “feaful,” and the MSM will run with that, despite the fact that Obama backed away from his offer to debate McCain anytime, anywhere.
I hope McCain renews his call for townhalls across the country.
Wethal on September 26, 2008 at 11:09 AM
McCain Camp: If Obama had agreed to the townhalls I had proposed, there would be less urgency for this debate.
carbon_footprint on September 26, 2008 at 11:10 AM
Obama only picks fights when he knows they will be broken up.
MarcusBrody on September 26, 2008 at 11:11 AM
McCain shows leadership and the MSM slams him. It really doesn’t matter. If McCain shows up, they’ll slam him for considering delaying the debate. If McCain doesn’t showup because he is trying to barter a deal to bail us out of the mess, the MSM will slam him for being “fearful”.
Is a load of BS. Who with a brain can’t see it for waht it is?
jbh45 on September 26, 2008 at 11:12 AM
If that happened, wouldn’t the university be obligated to eat the cost of the debates?
Slublog on September 26, 2008 at 11:12 AM
As Newt said on Hannity & Colmes, forget the debate. This is a crisis that needs attention. People will acknowledge that McCain put his country first. There can be another time scheduled for a debate.
In other analysis, this is going to throw Obama off kilter. He is studying to the kazoo. Since this is going on, all he will appear as a political dummy and not one that cares about solving an issue. McCain shows true leadership.
jencab on September 26, 2008 at 11:13 AM
They’re worried about McCain delaying and not making it? At least he’s apparently serious about doing something during a crisis. Meanwhile, The One, after running his mouth during the meeting yesterday and fanning the flames is now spending his time at the gym.
ZP on September 26, 2008 at 11:13 AM
McCain just threw two 7s in a row trying to make his points. The table has gone cold.
Fletch54 on September 26, 2008 at 11:14 AM
McCain proposed 10 town halls.
Obama agreed to 3 debates.
Obama is already -7. I.e., Obama already ducked 70% of what McCain wanted.
Now this little pu55y is complaining about McCain having to miss one debate? Pathetic.

carbon_footprint on September 26, 2008 at 11:14 AM
I like it – these ‘moderated’ debates are pretty much just rote talking-point BS anyway. Maybe McCain can force The One into a town hall style event afterall. Skipping this “debate” could be just the leverage needed.

do a debate from a tv feed like all the news channels do. Sure it’ll be staged, and oh gosh McCain won’t be live. He’ll have people coming in, interrupting as he takes his questions, and manages negotiations. Barack will stimmer stammer through his questions, attacking and attacking. McCain will calmly go through foreign policy in the tv, while dealing with senate/house negotiations in the background.
you know… multi-tasking.
jstueve on September 26, 2008 at 11:16 AM
Of course, BO doesn’t need to be in Washington for this decision.
When you only vote PRESENT, no need to know the ugly details, right?
stenwin77 on September 26, 2008 at 11:17 AM
The fact that Obama refused townhall debates all across the county needs to be highlighted. Over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over until the MSM and the general (non-paying attention) public understands that Obama is The One who is afraid of a debate.
He can’t hide from McCain for forever.

Citizen Duck on September 26, 2008 at 11:18 AM
McCain should “call in” the debate.
geckomon on September 26, 2008 at 11:18 AM
This debate is a farce. First of all the subject matter leads to Obama getting his ass kicked severely. Obama will show up with his canned responses and in any short spontaneous speech he will spew pure unintelligible babble. Obama has no substance and that’s why he has wandered around Washington aimlessly for the past two days. He’s nothing more than a Frankenstein monster of George Soros. Harry the stooge Reid has been attempting to cover Obama’s butt for a couple of days, but, like anything Harry attempts it was not successful. If Obama had any courage he would meet McCain one-on-one in town hall meetings. Obama only talks . . . he lacks the intellect, courage and good sense to act.
rplat on September 26, 2008 at 11:19 AM
Guys, it’s all show.
McCain is going to offer a plan that will probably be similar to what Gingrich talked about last night.
He’ll include some poison pills in it that the democrats can’t swallow and won’t pass.
He’ll say, I’ll take my case to the people at the debate. You all can have your 700 billion plan, I’ll present my plan that at most costs 200 billion – and we’ll see which the people like.
If he’s smart. At least.
lorien1973 on September 26, 2008 at 11:19 AM
McCain will destroy Obama in the debate. I don’t know why Obama is so eager to get destroyed. My guess is he’s talking a big game in the hopes McCain will no-show. I personally am eager to see McCain wipe the carpet with Barack.

Tony737 on September 26, 2008 at 11:22 AM
DON’T EVEN START WITH ME, ALLAH!
McCain has the upper hand here, because as you remember 70% of Americans believe that the media is biased towards Obama.
Any crap that is put out by the biased media and the tu tu tu tu tu tut… stammering Barney Frank is flat out not believed by those 70%.
Although we respect your opinions here, your instincts are frequently wrong because of your pessimistic weakness.
Just keep that in mind as the day and this debate goes on.
McCain has the upper hand during this debate because of the Congress being in between a rock and a hard place.
He (McCain) can insist on free market solutions to this bail out and if he doesn’t get it… vote against, make it famous and walk away winning the election.
Mcguyver on September 26, 2008 at 11:23 AM

Who cares? These debates are rarely informative. Besides, this campaign has gone on for over a year. If people don’t know where the candidates stand, they probably never will.
I’d rather have our representatives in DC working. Nothing wrong with earning that paycheck although Barry seems to have a problem with that idea. Where is he anyway?
Cody1991 on September 26, 2008 at 11:25 AM
LMAO!!!! McCain, fearful? Fearful of THE MANCHILD? LOL! RIGHT!!!!!
The debate should be rescheduled and Obama can go off and make a speech and be political while McCain is (hopefully) being a Conservative and putting his country first. Flyover country has a way of usually cutting through the political bullshit and recognizing someone who gives his word and acts upon those very words. By McCain not going to the debates he comes across as a man that can be trusted, will put the country first over his own political career, whose party stands for something rather than tv time, and can accomplish things in that acidic community in Washington.
This is just me, but I think this brings to the table the focus of the Congressional makeup and just what is going to be required of the President once he is elected. The whole ordeal makes Obama look like a figure head or a cardboard cutout while Reid and Pelosi are the real ones running the show. Do we want a sock puppet running our country or a former fighter pilot that does not mind damning the torpedos.

Again, we see the unseriousness of Barack Obama.
He’s been presenting his own case for two years. Of course, his case keeps changing, so it’s no wonder he wants to debate, because he probably just figured out his latest positions.
Harry Reid said presidential politics didn’t belong in these meetings…. shortly after he said that the agreement would be made up of a lot of Obama’s ideas…..
Do the Debate, McCain…..show that you can handle it after working in Wash DC…

At the debate, McCain needs to address how exactly we got into this financial mess. Then he needs to take Obama to foreign policy camp. Look for Obama to try to push his buttons and force a show of the infamous McCain temper. Hopefully, McCain is prepared for such manipulations.

Whether McCain has the “upper hand” or Obama does…it doesn’t matter. What matters is the economic disaster that we are facing.
McCain took an oath of office when he became a senator and presumably so did Obama.
He duty is to first do what we vote the senator to do, and as the elected and chosen leader of the Republican party, I want him there to represent my party.
I don’t want him at some two-bit debate that can be re-scheduled, I want this issue resolved.
The Democrats say around and watched this fiasco happen on their watch, with their hand out…
I don’t trust them, but I trust McCain, not that he is always right, but that he will do right.
He hates earmarks, hand-outs, if nothing else he will not let these “little” add-ons be shoved down our throats.
Franks is an expert at shoving thing down peoples throats, and I would imagine he is trying to slide something in through the back door.
Obama, if he was a leader and had any knowledge, he would be back advising his Democratic party (he is the chosen one)…but he isn’t, he doesn’t, and he won’t.
In other words, he won’t even be “present”.
