Debate #1 wrap-up; Update: Kissinger repudiates Obama

posted at 11:06 pm on September 26, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | regular view

Given the uncertainty surrounding the presidential debate tonight, I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect.  Both Barack Obama and John McCain have had to fly more than they expected in the last couple of days, and neither got a chance to focus on preparation, at least not to the extent they planned.  I figured we’d see at least one major gaffe or breakdown from one of the candidates, and honestly, I wasn’t looking forward to seeing it.

However, I think both men did better than I expected.  Neither seemed to show any effects from the hectic pace of the past week, and both appeared ready and relaxed at the start of tonight’s debate.  I’d also include Jim Lehrer in that description, even though he had to rewrite part of his script to accommodate the economic crisis.  Lehrer gave the debate a light touch as moderator, allowing the candidates plenty of space to talk and encouraging dialogue rather than speechmaking.  It was perhaps one of the best presidential debates I’ve seen in this cycle, maybe the best.

With that said, McCain clearly got the best of Obama tonight.  After a shaky couple of minutes to start the first question, McCain jabbed at Obama all night long — and he got Obama obviously flustered.  While McCain kept his equanimity and never raised his tone or pitch, Obama got visibly upset, his voice pitched higher when responding to McCain, and Obama interrupted more.  Obama also kept calling McCain “John” while McCain used the more proper “Senator Obama”, a difference that grated as the evening wore on.

Substantially, McCain also bested Obama on both economics and foreign policy.  On the former, it was most apparent when Lehrer asked both candidates what they would cut as President after the bailout package passes.  Obama could not bring himself to commit to one single cut, and instead talked about all of the funding he wanted to create for pet programs.  McCain noted that he has long championed spending reductions and proposed a spending freeze on all but the most vital programs.  When challenged on this point, Obama refused to say whether he would accept a freeze.

I did have a moment of frustration with McCain on the first question, a round I think Obama won.  He never challenged Obama’s assumptions that the current credit crisis came from too little regulation.  I kept expecting McCain to talk about the disaster of the Community Reinvestment Act, and the mandates from Congress that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac encourage bad lending by buying up bad paper.  Instead, he tried to out-populist Obama, and Obama sounds more authentic as a populist.

On foreign policy, Obama did better than expected, but still fell short.  I think his response on the decision to go into Iraq was quite good (even if I disagree with it), but he kept trying to argue that he didn’t demand a precipitous withdrawal in 2007 when the record clearly shows he did — and he beat Hillary to death with it in the primaries.  McCain drew blood when he pointed out that for all of Obama’s talk about the priority of Afghanistan, he never once bothered to visit that front until last July, even though his Senate subcommittee has jurisdiction on NATO issues.  Obama spluttered in response but never did explain why such an important theater wasn’t worth a single visit from him.

On Georgia, Russia, and eastern Europe, McCain proved himself the master of detailed foreign-policy thinking.  While Obama talked briefly about the potential for NATO membership for Georgia and Ukraine and pledged to “rebuild Georgia’s economy”, McCain explained the geopolitical realities of the entire region, and Russia’s intentions for it.

If Obama expected the old man to be too tired to debate properly, he is surely disappointed tonight.  McCain kept Obama on defense all night long, made Obama lose his composure, and maintained his own in a very presidential performance.  This one is a clear win for McCain.

Update: Obama tried to twist out of the “no preconditions” statement by claiming that Henry Kissinger supported it.  McCain openly scoffed at the notion, and for good reason — Kissinger didn’t say it:

Henry Kissinger believes Barack Obama misstated his views on diplomacy with US adversaries and is not happy about being mischaracterized. He says: “Senator McCain is right. I would not recommend the next President of the United States engage in talks with Iran at the Presidential level. My views on this issue are entirely compatible with the views of my friend Senator John McCain. We do not agree on everything, but we do agree that any negotiations with Iran must be geared to reality.”

Either Obama lied, or he’s too inexperienced to understand what Kissinger said and actually meant.

One more point about Obama’s obfuscations about “preparations” as opposed to “preconditions”: he originally said that he would meet with Ahmadinejad, Castro, Kim, and Chavez in his first year in office:

QUESTION: In 1982, Anwar Sadat traveled to Israel, a trip that resulted in a peace agreement that has lasted ever since.

In the spirit of that type of bold leadership, would you be willing to meet separately, without precondition, during the first year of your administration, in Washington or anywhere else, with the leaders of Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba and North Korea, in order to bridge the gap that divides our countries?

COOPER: I should also point out that Stephen is in the crowd tonight.

Senator Obama?

OBAMA: I would. And the reason is this, that the notion that somehow not talking to countries is punishment to them — which has been the guiding diplomatic principle of this administration — is ridiculous.

How much “preparation” time would he have?

Greta is talking by phone to Bill O’Boyle, a reporter from Wilkes-Barre, PA — a Hillary stronghold — who monitored a local panel watching the debate. He said the panel of Democrats and independents favored McCain and characterized him as the more presidential.

She is now talking to a Florida reporter who said that her panel was still undecided but thought McCain was stronger.

We were in Afghanistan for more than a year before we went to Iraq and no one said we should send in more troops. People like Obama wanted us to do the multinational/NATO/UN thing and that is what we did. That is one reason the poppies are still there, the Europeans do not want us eradicating them.

Now that Iraq is getting calmer, they need a new war to complain abou so they remember Afhaganistan.

Guys like Obama always forget that if we had not gone into Iraq Saddam Hussein would still be alive and in control of that place. The man who tried to kill a president, who shot at our planes, defied UN force resolutions, paid of suicide bombers and gave money to all kinds of terrorists including AlQaida would still be there. By now the sanctions and no fly zones would be a thing of the past. I wonder if Obama thinks that Saddam would have been anything other than a dangerous dictator?

Agreed, this whole thing is bizarre. I have resigned myself to the fact that we will have to do something and it will be big. I am hoping it ultimately makes more sense and that the Dems don’t get to funnel money to their personal piggy banks. I think that is another reason I give Sen. McCain more respect. He got the fear of God put into him with the Keating Five and since then has done a good job of trying to avoid outside interference.

Why would I get rid of my free advertising for something I don’t control? If I was a new guy, it wouldn’t matter. . . like all of the ‘challengers’ who obviously haven’t ever confronted me in a debate here or they’d tread a lot more lightly.

Glad to see scrubjay of 12:24 also noticing Obambi’s bracelet followup. Obambi made it seem he’d gotten a Cracker Jack prize not a somber symbol of a veteran’s ultimate sacrifice.

Management is dull and most of the executive decisions McCain will be called upon to make will be incredibly boring. Therefore, McCain’s lack of excess emotion demonstrates suitability for executive office just as it reminds of courage under fire. By contrast, Obambi’s bombast is cover for indecision, naivete and inexperience. Who wants an excited neurosurgeon more concerned about the placement of the surgical drapes instead of calm focus on the gray matter in the center of the surgical field?

One topic McCain should address in future debates is the Democrat obstruction in Congress and the departure of Pelosi from town to sell her book instead of facing policy on offshore drilling. The Dims have run an ineffective Congressional majority since early 2007. McCain and Palin would be wise to never miss an opportunity to point that out.

But this is the problem I have with McCain. He wants to be in on this bill because it give him (Congress) more power and money. I REALLY REALLY REALLY liked his spending freeze idea.

But he doesn’t address all the entitlements he wants to give away to 20 million illegal aliens. He dismisses the promise of government social services as people being bigoted against Mexicans.

It doesn’t dawn on him that granting citizenship accelerates the problems of entitlements. Eventually there will be an ‘emergency meeting’ about Medicare and Social Security. Guess who will suffer. . . it won’t be Congress because they use OUR money. Our kids and grandkids will have to pay for what this congress spends.

Local and state communities are being bankrupted by illegals. Offshore drilling and ANWR keep us dependent on foreign oil – WHAT GIVES CONGRESS THE RIGHT to forbid drilling offshore and in ANWR?

Anyway, it goes on and on. I’m looking for a leader that doesn’t want power. Nobody running would do what Washington did and give up the King’s throne. They’d all take it in a second and give up the ‘democracy’ they claim to adore.

I agree with you, but it’s not really a contention about whether there is increased activity in Afghanistan. There really is. The last big mission my unit was on was the Musa Qalet (Musa Kalay) operation near Kandahar. Iranian influence and a Taliban foothold in that community after the Brits moved out of there.

And they are attacking from Pakaistan in RC East in and around the Konar Valley.

But that’s my very point. Obama still reacts to emotional responses more worried about previous missteps and his stupid world view crap.

Mac is what we need. A pragmatist who understands the situation.

Cindy Munford on September 27, 2008 at 12:53 AM

I am. Not because I don’t like them, but because I can’t afford them. At some point the government is going to need to start making prudent fiscal decisions like every family across America has. When a family can’t afford things, it cuts things. If it can’t afford something, it doesn’t get it or have it – it goes without.

If the government can’t afford something they just print more money (or borrow it or tax citizens more). The government needs to be fiscally responsible. If we could afford to offer Medicare, Social Security, Medicaid benefits to every citizen in the world, that would be great!

But if we can’t afford to provide it for the citizens who are paying for it, we shouldn’t be promising it to ANYONE but citizens.

McCain really blew it on that first question, he was embarrassingly inept, trying to out Obama Obama.

He let Obama place the blame for something Democrats are mostly responsible for fully on the Republicans.

thecountofincognito on September 27, 2008 at 12:40 AM

McCain has been heavily campaigning on being the only person with actual experience involving reaching across the isle to try to solve problems in a non-partisan fashion.

It would have given the Democrats overwhelming ammunition if he’d used a national Presidential debate to sling mud and name names to score points over the current financial crisis, making instant enemies of the very people he’s proposing to spend four years working with to solve the country’s problems.

Kudos to him for keeping his friends close, and his enemies closer. That took great restraint, given how badly the Democrats have been publicly abusive of his behind the scenes efforts to try to hammer out a compromise that both sides could live with to move the country beyond stuck, and keep Wall Street from calling the shots from now on regarding such matters.

I’d always wondered if McCain really was serious when he would claim that above all, America First was his principle. Now I’m trending towards believing him, although what the American voting public believes should count more than what his fellow Congresspersons want.

Point well taken about Krauthammer sometimes slouching a bit much into an elitist / highbrow Ivy League society snob take on things. Not to offend any whom have attended Ivy League schools whom I think will follow what I mean. Not the GHW Bush easygoing Ivy League style of the immaculately polite successful, war veteran, Yale guy but rather a John Kerry style of wishing he had done more, was genuinely heroic and was more famous?

I respect Krauthammer on most issues yet agree with those here that there’s peripheral interference acting upon his disdain on McCain especially when contrasted with Obama’s neurotically nomadic mind on most issues and questions.

The Vonnegut theme in Back to School is one of my favorites on over-analysis in academia. Too many of my English profs pretended to think they knew more about Shakespeare than Anne Hathaway.

Bambi studied Alinsky. McCain studied Alfred Thayer, Sun Zsu, Caeser, Plato, Mao, Machavelli and all the other military thinkers for the last several thousand years. Plus he studied at Annapolis. Even bottom fifth in class makes character. And the son plus grandson of admirals doesn’t hurt. Mac knows what Bambi and his handlers can only guess. Annapolis and carrier pilot tactics beats Harvard Law easily. He also has Petreus for an update.

Cut to the chase. McCain is keeping a reserve force just like a good general does. War is always about the unexpected. There is no doubt that this is war for the next generation of America. The best laid plans etc. Palin and the other excellent points are Mac’s reserve. He has made probes to determine where the enemy is. He deployed the first line of his offense tonight. His reserve is unusually deep but likely needed against an opponent known for using unconventional weapons and tactics.

Why would I get rid of my free advertising for something I don’t control? If I was a new guy, it wouldn’t matter. . . like all of the ‘challengers’ who obviously haven’t ever confronted me in a debate here or they’d tread a lot more lightly.

you think I backed down, WHAT MAKES YOU THINK I CARE WHAT YOU THINK?

Thacker: I’m glad you’re doing a good business selling short-term health insurance. Entrepreneurs drive the economy.

You provide a web link with your name, so you may be drawing in a lot of mass-market, desperate customers. I’ll even go so far as to say that products like the ones you handle make sense in some circumstances, although I haven’t had the opportunity to review the financial credentials of the companies you handle or the merits of the products.

Since this is an opinion blog, please allow me to offer some of my own:

1. Since you are using Hot Air to generate advertising for your business, it is appropriate to compensate Hot Air for the benefit derived. If you are not willing to compensate Hot Air for the advertising, Hot Air should give serious consideration to allowing you to continue to comment, but de-linking the advertising that you claim to be jonesing from the site.

2. Buyer beware. The online purchase of insurance–of any kind– from an anonymous business source should be approached with caution. On-line mass-marketers may have additional opportunities to capture and use data about buyers and shoppers.

It may be difficult to assess the credentials of the agent, agency and insurers behind a mass-marketer. If you choose to purchase from one, do due diligence and request specific written information about the a) the financial rating system used for insurers b) the financial ratings of insurers proposed by the seller c) precise terms about was is include and excluded from the policy, and any waiting periods. Also request information about the selling agency and the state of its licensing. You may wish to contact the state insurance office to see if the mass marketer has complaints against it.

3. If you believe that a commenter is annoying on an anonymous blog, it may be an indication of the customer service you will receive from his on-line mass-marketing sales system.

There. Took care of a bit of the disclosure.

The media feed on dissent and conflict. They soooooooooooooooo wanted a knock out blow tonight that they can’t report objectively on the facts. The media, FOX included, had worked themselves into a frenzy over this debate being a referendum on McCain’s trip to Washington.

Well, that didn’t happen. No high drama like what they expected, so now they have buyers remorse. Had the issue of John suspending his campaign never been an issue, the MSM, FOX included, would be really jazzed about McCain’s obvious command over The Messiah.

BUT, this is the fist chink in the Savior’s armor. John exposed it for millions of Americans to see.

After McCain’s sharp closing comment it made Obamba’s long, slow walk across the stage seem longer and slower. I think Obama knows the man of substance of this evening clearly was McCain.

I’ll tune briefly to Couric’s next newscast (mute on, of course) for a moment on Monday. If angry Katie is more scowling and snake-eyed than usual I’ll know the mood in the See-BS “news”room isn’t going positive for that network’s presidential candidate.

What are Hot Air’s standards for advertising? Can any commenter use his/her nick link to advertise commercials products?

I’m thinking about some hand-crocheted toilet paper roll holders, probably with multi-colored yarns.

csdeven on September 27, 2008 at 1:31 AM

I am calling a tie.

Obama came off far better than I expected. All of us political junkies know that every other word he uttered was either an outright lie and/or a gross exaggeration, but he managed to cut out a LOT of his stutter, made some pointed attacks and (trying to be unbiased) raised some good questions for the uninformed.

McCain seemed vanilla. I kept hoping for some of his off the cuff, straight talk, town hall spark, but it wasn’t really there. That was easily compensated for by his ease with the questions and answer and clear depth of knowledge on all topics.

I am somewhat disappointed though because I feel that McCain missed a big opportunity… well, several of them.

- Economy: McCain came across solid, but failed to name names, reinforce his criteria for the bailout or take Obama to task for his lack of leadership or his direct contribution to the crisis. He had the opportunity to devastate Obama on this topic and didn’t take it.
- Responding to attacks- First, McCain ignored Obama completely. Eye contact, body language, etc. It looked like he was making a concerted effort to pretend Obama was not in the room. McCain needed to take charge and he instead deferred/ focused on Lehrer. Next, he let Obama get away with too many stone throws that were either false or inaccurate. Again, he could have taken the opportunity to call Obama out on very pointed and simple lies and exaggerations, but let it go.

The discerning viewers should be able to acknowledge McCain’s clear depth and professionalism and unparalleled knowledge. It the less discerning Indies that I am concerned with.

Obama came out with a strong, prepared populist message. Yeah, I know it’s all BS and he’s again contradicted every position he’s ever taken on anything and every position that he and Biden have preached in the past week. But the everyday, non political folks will miss that (I think) and may be tempted to take Bambi at face value.

The majority of the population is desperate and/ or frustrated on some level. That majority will make emotional decisions; not logical ones. Obama did what he always does- sells emotion to the woefully ignorant, desperate and frustrated. Those are the people that will decide this election. I think Obama made a good pitch and McCain failed to call bullshit.

CNN changed their homepage. Now it features both candidates.

“How unlike them.” I sez to myself. Then I clicked the link to the story and saw the picture of Obama with the caption: “Sen. Barack Obama said Sen. John McCain would bring a continuation of President Bush’s “failed policies.”

Thennnnnn I began reading the article. It seems tonight McCain “criticized” Obama and Obama “linked” McCain (to Bush).

The next paragraph quotes McCain as saying “I’m afraid Sen. Obama doesn’t understand the difference between a tactic and a strategy,” but fails to say just why McCain would say something like that (it really sounds pretty petty & stupid out of context, doesn’t it).

Then “McCain drew from his experience overseas [????] as he tried to portray himself as the more qualified candidate.” What do they mean by “his experience overseas?” It sounds like they’re talking about his war record, not his 20 years in the Senate.

Every time they discribe an interchange McCain is attacking Obama and Obama is responding.

Holy crap.

I couldn’t read any more.

Who are these new people? What is their problem? This blog used to be much more cordial – even with disagreement.

Fortunately we have someone on here who thinks they are important. who are you Mr. Anonymous? I think I’d trust someone who says who they are and links to how you can get in touch with them than to someone who doesn’t even know what the product is for complaining about something out of his jurisdiction.

I can assure you that I am licensed by the departments of insurances as are all of my plans in each of the states I do business. I have been doing this and HELPING people save money for 15 years after my father has done it for 35 years to now.

I think I have a bit to offer in the health care debate. However, if you think I should have to pay to comment here, I’d like to see your official ‘hotair police’ credentials.

I have NEVER seen someone post such profanity as did that person earlier addressing me. That’s gutter or locker room talk that doesn’t belong on a family friendly blog like this.

It’s the new guys. . . they don’t know how to debate. It’s all about trashing a perceived character with them. Debate to these new people have nothing to do with the actual points. . . just the appearance of how the points are addressed and responded to. I think one guy got banned for addressing me in that manner. You are begging Allah to reprimand me?

Good luck.

We may never win the spin unless we can get more of our kids to go to Columbia and become jounalists. I remember a long time ago a lesbian activist who wrote for The Village Voice was making a big deal on the Phil Donahue Show saying that the key to Americas opinion was the press. She was imploring young people to go to college to become crusaders of their issues through print. She knew what she was ttalking about.

The liberal press makes me jealous for that much positve attention to our issues. They have it pretty much locked up and it would take a long time to get strong enought o combat it.

Conservatives have done a very bad job of infiltrating the news media and academia. There should be grants & tutoring for conservatives in these fields. Either that, or we somehow have to make sure that every professor and member of the chattering classes gets mugged by liberal reality.

Long ago, during the various Lewinsky scandals I used to post at CNN. Whenever the viewer polls percentages tended to go against Slick there always seemed to be some strange CNN poll correction factor applied in the early morning hours to tilt the percentages way back in favor of their beloved Clinton.

The decade old days of pointing out to the NOW cows that Clintoon’s boinking of the hired help was employee molestation under duress (pun optional) before the famous blue dress revelation then employee molestation upon duress (pun optional) afterwards. Seeing the NOW crowd’s heads explode to that nearly as violently as they have against the brilliant antidote to Hillary…. the Great Sarah Palin. Ah, memories.

Yup, and I have a friend in hollywood that says the blacklisting they always complained about is “real”! Only it’s used to keep conseratives shutup. He’s told be even with the size of his organization and it’s reputation, he would never jeopardize business by talking about his conservative background. They own the entire field.
