From what I’ve read, McCain’s plan would also allow the self-insured to purchase insurance from out of state. That would be a boon for those of us self-employed here in WA. I wouldn’t have to buy mental health insurance, for example (as Washington State mandates).

I live in Washington state, am self-employed, and buy my own insurance. I pay a lot of money for it, the top-of-the-line coverage my (large) insurance company offers. As for that mandate, let me clue you in to something if you don’t know – the insurance companies are getting around it by setting the deductible at obscenely high levels. I think mine is $3K. My counselor charges $110 per visit. I think once I meet the $3K, they’ll then pay for six visits, as I recall.

Are you implying that we can all sit by and allow the government to discriminate against certain Americans based on their appliances?

But what about those who are really sick? Or have heart problems, cancer, etc. Will they pay the same amount as the rest or more becuase they WILL have to go to the doc’s more often as well as have more tests. Will they get the same treatment or will they be put off on the side?

That would concern me too. As I said in an earlier post, I prefer we insure as many as possible and spread the rsik. Personally, I don’t mind paying a little extra if everyone can be cared for without losing everything in doing it. Or being elft out completely.

People have come to view having someone else pay for treatment of catastrophic illness as a right.

Isn’t that what insurance is all about? Not necessarily a right but spreading the risk so that the healthy and unhealthy balance out. Premiums are adjustments to the results and future risk assessments. Spreading the risk among a large group of people helps us all slepp at night.

This is a tricky subject. I’m for having the health insurance industry work like auto insurance – and just like you can still get reasonable insurance if you’ve had an accident, you should still be able to get insurance at a decent price if you have a preexisting condition.
