Video: Visiting pastor prays over Palin for protection from witchcraft

Tapper’s got a good quickie recap to bring you up to speed. Skip ahead to 8:30 for the money bit. The left wants payback for Wright (Hagee and Parsley don’t quite suffice, evidently) so here’s their tu quoque for “God damn America,” I guess. Why prayers about witchcraft would be deemed alarmingly kooky or outre when prayers about angels, demons, or Satan are perfectly mundane and unexceptional escapes me, but then an atheist would say that, wouldn’t he? Meanwhile, Bill Donohue, as quoted by Tapper, makes a level-headed point (for once) about how different cultures understand evil. Is it really shocking that a guy who comes from a part of the world where they believe in witchcraft would pray for protection from it? Was Palin supposed to have run screaming from the altar when he mentioned it rather than have stood there politely and waited for him to finish? The One stuck with Trinity for decades; if he had stayed with them for a few years but then roused himself to quit over Wright (as Oprah appears to have done), I’d wager voters would have been a lot more forgiving.
What the pastor says about “Israelites” is dicier but, as Tapper notes, ambiguous. It could be a compliment or it could be an Ahmadinejad-esque insinuation about the shadowy people who control the banks. Judge for yourself, but then answer me this: Isn’t the current line among Palin-haters that she’s an empty vessel whom the dastardly neocons are reprogramming to do Israel’s bidding? The word “indoctrination” has been used, if I’m not mistaken. How are we supposed to impute the pastor’s sentiments to her if we’re busy pretending she’s some sort of Likudbot?
Update: “OUT OF MY MOUTH, FOUL JESUS COOKIE!”

Problematic?
Let’s replay Rev. Wright and see what’s problematic.

He obviously had Pelosi and The View in mind when he prayed this.
AubieJon on September 25, 2008 at 10:09 PM
Wait, wait, wait. So are the critics saying that witchcraft doesn’t exist? ‘Cause I think there are a whole bunch of people who call themselves “witches”. So, what’s the problem with praying to be protected with them?
Plus, it comes from an African-African. Doesn’t this count as extra-credit points from the left? Wait – they’re racicsts!!!!!!

This looks racist to me. And if I’m not mistaken, that pastor looks black too.
John Doe on September 25, 2008 at 10:11 PM
Rev. Wright gives Palin a whole lot of cover on religious issues. This gives Obama some cover on Wright as well though.
johnt on September 25, 2008 at 10:11 PM
Looks like Palin just lost the Wiccan vote.
Dang.
Elizabetty on September 25, 2008 at 10:11 PM
Assemblies of God churches love Israel.
jgapinoy on September 25, 2008 at 10:12 PM
Osama Obama is still around. The prayer didn’t work.
If he had lectured her about “AmeriKKKa” creating AIDS to kill Africans, he’d still only be partway to full “Wright-ness.”
MrScribbler on September 25, 2008 at 10:12 PM
So? God bless her for being unashamedly a Christian! Once again it’s a shame that someone in a country that was first settled by Pilgrims seeking religious freedom has to apologize and be scrutinized for their belief. I think atheists are wacko but that wouldn’t cause me to not vote for one as long as their moral compass pointed in the right direction.
gator70 on September 25, 2008 at 10:12 PM
She left that church didn’t she? Before it was politically benficial?
Hog Wild on September 25, 2008 at 10:12 PM
How? “Goddam America” versus this are nowhere near the same thing.
Elizabetty on September 25, 2008 at 10:12 PM
Just another example on how the left misunderstands religion.
Here’s a bit of advice in regards to understanding religion:
- never listen to a person who tells you that Job is in the New Testament, or that Jesus was a liberal or that Jesus was a community organizer.
Oh, and add to that list anyone who learned church history from The DaVinci Code.
Religious_Zealot on September 25, 2008 at 10:13 PM
Don’t be too surprised if one of the Drive-By networks features this video in an eight-part series on the pernicious presence of Christianist cults in America.
ManlyRash on September 25, 2008 at 10:13 PM
There is a certain segment of charismatic conservative Christianity that spends a whole lot more time thinking about witchcraft than the rest of the country – these are “Jesus Camp”, anti-Harry Potter types that people outside of that movement often find more than a bit crazy. My guess is that highlighting this video is an attempt to tie Palin to that group. If successful, it could be a very effective tactic to balance against the Obama-Wright connections. In the end, Wright’s theology was not too far from mainstream – the conclusions he drew from it were way out there, though – but that of one or more of Palin’s churches may strike a lot of people as very weird.
Big S on September 25, 2008 at 10:13 PM
The only problem I can see here is that it’s frowned upon (not vehemently though) for men to lay hands on a woman, even in praying for her. There should have been women up there doing that.
AubieJon on September 25, 2008 at 10:14 PM
LOL
Witchcraft
abinitioadinfinitum on September 25, 2008 at 10:14 PM
-ahem-
Teaching your congregation to say “G– damn America”, or that AIDS was invented by the CIA or any encouragement to hate ‘whitey’, in no way, shape or form compares to praying for a protection against witchcraft.
Anyone who says differently is simply ignorant about religion and Christianity.
Religious_Zealot on September 25, 2008 at 10:15 PM
Maybe Palin’s church is problematic because, unlike Wright/Obama’s, prayer takes place there. Wright’s okay because he delivers politics, racism and demagoguery. Prayer really sets off the left.
obladioblada on September 25, 2008 at 10:15 PM
This SHOULD be a non-issue but don’t count on the msm to let it go. They’re so freakin’ predictable it’s no longer funny anymore.
VinnyL on September 25, 2008 at 10:16 PM
If successful. A stretch, to be sure.
Black liberation theology is out there – even for the liberal Christian mainstream
ManlyRash on September 25, 2008 at 10:16 PM
Is this a visiting pastor, or not? Can he really be compared to Wright?
Besides, a prayer of protection versus “God damn America” and “Riiiiiiiidin’ dirty!” doesn’t seem like much of a contest to me.
capitalist piglet on September 25, 2008 at 10:16 PM
I can already see that most folks are ignorant as to what is going on in the “mega churches”. Since you only see what they show on TV , what you don’t see is that most “non denominational” churches are borderline pentacostal or Charismatic. Most mega churches are non denominational and many many folks pray in this manner. You would be surprised.

Or going to a Church?
Chakra Hammer on September 25, 2008 at 10:23 PM
Any attempt by the left to use this as cover for Wright will only increase Middle America’s support for Gov. Palin.
Christians are getting a little tired of being told by left-leaning elites how to practice their religion and what they should or shouldn’t believe.

Survey (of the Drive-By media) says: Going to church!
ManlyRash on September 25, 2008 at 10:25 PM
BLT takes an out-of-the mainstream view of what religion tells us to do in society, while churches like Palin’s (as much as I know about it anyway) not only do that but have an out-of-the-mainstream view of how God interacts with us in our everyday lives. This last part is how Palin’s church can become an electoral problem. Most Americans have seen plenty of disagreement about theology in terms of biblical interpretation, but consider many of those stories to be either allegory or from long ago. The focus on personal encounters with witchcraft and demonic forces is something different altogether, and can be off-putting for those who do not subscribe to such views.
Big S on September 25, 2008 at 10:26 PM
Because the prayer would have caused Tina Fey to either melt or burst into flames.
ManlyRash on September 25, 2008 at 10:21 PM

I do believe that NBC should airdrop a dozen extra reporters just to research and dissect everything there is to know about this church.

Quote of the day:
This should drive a few more liberals to seek clinical help.
John Doe on September 25, 2008 at 10:26 PM
In my opinion there isn’t anything in this video that is even comparable to Wright. But that wont stop Dems from trying to use it against McCain and Palin when they bringing up Wright in the future. It’s cover in the sense that it gives the Obama camp a way to respond without having to answer for why Obama spent 20 years in a racist church. Of course the McCain camp will make the point that this isn’t comparable to Wright.
johnt on September 25, 2008 at 10:26 PM
LOL. Honestly, I was grossed out by Jindal’s involvement in an “excorcism”. But bottom line is, there are people who believe in these things, and I am cultivating a laissez faire attitude toward them all.
RushBaby on September 25, 2008 at 10:26 PM
Anyway, re: this video.
Don’t care, MSM.
Call your reporters at that ubiquitous coffee shop in Anchorage and ask for your money back. Then go back and read the Enquirer, just like you’ve done for every single smear job in the mast month.
Give me a break.
fiatboomer on September 25, 2008 at 10:26 PM
Yes, you were mocking one of the smear pieces, but the verbiage you quoted was grossly offensive. Most readers, particularly those who who just troll HA, wouldn’t get what you were saying, they’d only look at the words used and attribute them to you and HA.
obladioblada on September 25, 2008 at 10:26 PM
Obama’s pastor for twenty years taught his church to hate America & Whitey.
A visiting preacher prayed once against witchcraft in Palin’s behalf.
Go ahead, leftists–play the religion card.

My thoughts exactly.
Whatever one thinks of him, this man is not Palin’s pastor. He’s a guest pastor at her former church, which beats Barry’s crazy uncles in the attic, and all those people who are not the people he thought he knew.

I am familiar with Pentecostal religion, and like all fundamentalist Christians, believe that Israelites and/or Jews are God’s Chosen People. End of story.
Queen0fCups on September 25, 2008 at 10:29 PM
No different than Obama doing this: http://www.swamppolitics.com/news/politics/blog/obama%20in%20turban%20small-thumb
For cultural respect or some BS like that. A pastor visited her church from another culture and she showed her respects by going through his rituals. Don’t world leaders do this all the time when visiting other countries?
In any case, the media won’t see it that way. So sad that we have to talk about the media as a disclaimer like this. Its depressing.
eski502 on September 25, 2008 at 10:30 PM
I Really dont think that this will be able to play too negatively. For one, you cant hardly put that in a sound byte. Two, I think i read the preacher is from Haity or something. They have strong wicca fears there. Three, how do you sound Byte a prayer respectfully.

It may be a Southern Baptist thing, then. That’s what I am. Please throw money instead of stones. We usually ask for women to do this, with the pastor leading the time of prayer. I was thinking AOG or whatever this church is was more conservative than SB. I know they’re more charismatic.

What’s the problem with getting prayed for??
Anybody says they want to pray for me, go for it!
The left just doesn’t get it!
This is America, folks!
Middle America prays. Laying hands on someone is not just Biblical, it is common.
The average guy looking at that is going to go,, “Hey,, cool! She’s got convictions and she’s got morals!”
Lets talk a little diversity!! LOL!!
Also,, you know,, there is a lot of witchcraft in Africa, too, I might add. It is a very real cultural thing in many of the small villages.

I’m not exactly sure what you mean by “out-of-the-mainstream”.
If you mean “way different than the churches liberals go to”, then I would agree.
But if you mean out-of-the CHRISTIAN mainstream, then I’d simply suggest that you get out a little bit more because that is not the case.
Evangelical churches are the fastest growing churches in America.

Amadeus on September 25, 2008 at 10:34 PM
I don’t see it as a big deal either. A black Haitian (?) pastor praying over someone…they aren’t likely to risk looking like bigots to involve him in some criticism of her. If the man had been white, I can imagine that might have changed the equation for these selective outrage clowns.
capitalist piglet on September 25, 2008 at 10:34 PM
I didn’t read all of the comments but didn’t AP say that this was a visiting pastor from Africa or a place where they believe in witches?
No brainer! What’s the big deal? He believes that people need protection from witches so how does that reflect badly on Palin?

The same people who criticize her are the same people who would participate in any religious ceremony no matter how whacky in another country.

I used to attend Alliance churches; I’ve attended Four Square, too, and I’ve visited a couple of A/G churches – and my current church is a non-denominational Christian church, mixed race and a wonderful church…I have never been aware of a place that would not allow people of either gender to lay hands in prayer on one another, but I can see where certain churches might make that a policy.
Either way, that would be the least of the MSM’s worries about this. The woman is like a cross to a vampire.
