Video: The obligatory “Letterman rails against McCain for nine minutes” clip

posted at 11:47 am on September 25, 2008 by Allahpundit

Every bit as tedious as the headline makes it sound. To grasp just how spiteful this is, note that Olbermann wasn’t originally scheduled to appear. He was the guy Letterman got to replace McCain. There must be dozens of people on his own network who’d love a turn on “Late Show,” but because he wanted to flip Maverick the bird, he dialed up the most notorious Republican-hater he could find. Good work, Dave.

Note Olby’s conspicuous smile near the end at the thought of Palin coming on. Not the first time he’s been unable to suppress derisive mirth at a mention of her.

Is Letterman still on?

uncalheels on September 25, 2008 at 11:49 AM

Not going to click that video link… EVER!!!!

My time is too important.

Yakko77 on September 25, 2008 at 11:49 AM

I expected better of Letterman who, by his own admission, was raised by poodles.

Terrie on September 25, 2008 at 11:50 AM

Bill and Hillary defend McCain…

Former President Bill Clinton defended Sen. John McCain’s request to delay the first presidential debate, saying McCain did it in “good faith” and pushed organizers to reserve time for economy talk during the debate if the Friday plans move forward.

It’s not enough to vote “present” — or simply to keep campaigning and hope the crisis will go away because “it’s above my pay grade.

Mr. Joe on September 25, 2008 at 11:51 AM

Stupid human tricks.

db on September 25, 2008 at 11:51 AM

Wait…. so McCain needs to reassure people losing thier 401Ks… he needs to drum up support for SOME kind of package…

…and wetterman’s feewings are hurt because McCain picks a national NEWSCAST seen by people eating Dinner at their Kitchen tables over his “Entertainment” show that features Dropping Watermelons from the top of 6 story buildings??????????????

SERIOUSLY?????

I love Letterman, but stop the preening, honey. You sound “fussy”!

McCain is driving these folks absolutely bat**** crazy.

That alone is reason enough to vote for him.

oh, and i love how on that video when i saw each, half the comments said “this is the day that mccain lost the election. history books will tell of this day forever”

huh?

mccain gets worse from Stewart and Colbert every night. he got worse from ‘the view’ last week. anyone whose vote will be swayed by letterman ranting was voting ‘O’ anyway…

i love youtube commenters though, seriously, does Obama pay them or what???

battleoflepanto1571 on September 25, 2008 at 11:53 AM

Shoulda used Olbermann for “Will It Float?”

Jim Treacher on September 25, 2008 at 11:54 AM

That show is worthless.

It used to be funny…not anymore.

Dave’s life is a living hell.

Leno is funny. I don’t watch Letterman, ever. So do more people when given the choice between the two. Letterman is unfunny.

dave lost big points in my book last night, and he won’t be getting them back.

homesickamerican on September 25, 2008 at 11:55 AM

I saw this live last night, and I thought Lettermann was just bitter. I bet he’s waiting for McCain to come back…that will be the day.

Chudi on September 25, 2008 at 11:55 AM

I watched a little of this last night – and honestly, there was one funny moment, I gotta give credit where credit is due. Before Olby really got going, they were talking about the credit crisis and Letterman asked something along the lines of, what if it gets worse. Olby looked confused for a moment and said something like “at that point, just eat your money”.

I laughed out loud and changed the channel. I knew it wouldn’t get any better after that.

Someone posted a link yesterday to an article from Colorado. Obama has volunteers who ‘patrol’ political sites and raid the comments sections with pro-Obama/ anti-McCain comments. And they love The One so much they do it for free.

BadgerHawk on September 25, 2008 at 11:55 AM

Dave just wishes McCain would have spent some time yukking it up on late night TV while the banking crisis raged. Sorry, that’s one less round of criticism to pound him with.

PappaMac on September 25, 2008 at 11:56 AM

Letterman sucks. He is never on top in the ratings. I don’t care if he was Johnny Carson’s favorite. Carson is another lib, but not as annoying.
Give me Jay Leno anytime of the week.

Orrin Hatch was on Imus today and he told this joke by Leno:
It is no wonder why McCain did not choose Romney. If he needs CPR, he got Palin.

jencab on September 25, 2008 at 11:56 AM

Why would any sane person possibly care what this moron thinks? Having Olbermen on just reinforces that the left share the same mental illness. Speaking of mental illness, where’s Michelle?

volsense on September 25, 2008 at 11:56 AM

Awww.. poor wittle Dave didn’t get Palin on… Gee, Dave, think it had something to do with you saying her “family” should be on the “Jerry Springer Show”? Yes, politicians have better things to do than hang out on your #2 (#3?) late night show.

mindhacker on September 25, 2008 at 11:57 AM

Two losers with no ratings.

So if this is how he feels about McCain, was he going to be a fraud and suck up and be nice to him if he came on?

JammieWearingFool on September 25, 2008 at 11:57 AM

‘Late Show’ posts poor ratings
June 26, 2008 CBS’ “The Late Show With David Letterman” tied its lowest-ever adults 18-49 rating last week. “Late Show” averaged a 0.9 rating in adults 18-49, Nielsen Media Research said. Meanwhile, “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno” averaged a 1.3 rating in the demo, its biggest margin of victory against “Late Show” in four months.

Letterman is years past his expiration date. He was funny a long time ago when his act consisted mostly of imitating Steve Allen but now he’s just predictable and bitter. I expect we’ll be hearing news of his retirement soon.

Plus that Paul Schaeffer could be replaced by a department store mannequin and no one would notice.

Gilda on September 25, 2008 at 12:00 PM

But here’s a little news flash for all those reporters and commentators: I’m not going to Washington to seek their good opinion – I’m going to Washington to serve the people of this country. Americans expect us to go to Washington for the right reasons, and not just to mingle with the right people.

Not the whole year though, just once.

I graduated high school in 1986.

I had better things to do then, than watch Letterman.

Funny, I still have better things to do than watch the clown.

I saw a couple preview clips on commercials after the Presidents speech.

I thought about watching it, but was afraid he and Olbermass would break into a full sixty-nine.

MORE ratings news on that LOSER, David Letterman:

For the week of August 25-29, Jay’s average 1.660 million adults 18-49 topped the 976,000 of Letterman; in total viewers, Jay’s audience of 4.536 million persons beat Letterman’s 2.654 million; and in adults 18-34, Jay’s 639,000 out-delivered Letterman’s 355,000.

Kindred spirits, so to speak: talent’s only in the delivery, but there’s no real originality, creativity, or substance to them.

Are there any grown-ups left in America?

When did appearing on Letterman or hosting SNL become a prerequisite for running for office? Damn. Bush took flak for his whereabouts on 9/11; I suppose he should have gone straight to “The Late Show” where he was needed.

No hand shows. No late shows.

fogw on September 25, 2008 at 12:28 PM

There must be dozens of people on his own network who’d love a turn on “Late Show,” but because he wanted to flip Maverick the bird,

Actually I agree with Letterman. Lots of politicians would love the opportunity to be booked on Letterman. It’s great campaigning.

The only reason he is doing this is because it seemed to work so well when he postponed the R convention for the hurricane. I have a problem with him saying ‘I’m going to save the country by wasting even MORE of your money than I have in the 30 years I spent getting America into a situation where we need to be saved’.

Again, I have a hard time thinking that anyone in DC can ‘save’ America by spending America’s money.

David Letterman was PISSED that McCain blew him off. McCain doesn’t care when he makes people angry. Ole Miss is going to be angry if he skips their debate as well because preparation and security have cost them 6 million dollars that they won’t get back. But McCain doesn’t care about anyone but him.

McCain is grandstanding. Letterman called him on it (with the Couric video that puts McCain’s ‘emergency’ in an appropriate context).

I don’t blame Letterman, I blame McCain. It’s a bad move. But McCain enjoys making people angry. It’s like a kid who does something bad because it’s the only sure fire way he’ll get attention.

Richard Romano on September 25, 2008 at 12:29 PM

Sigh. I used to really like Dave. He kept me sane on deployment in 1992. I remember it fondly.

Here’s the deal, Dave (and Oprah and Jay and Conan and Tyra and Ellen and all the rest of the light and frothy empty-headed talking heads):

It’s okay that you have your politics. No matter how misguided.

It’s okay for you to share your views, as long as you pick an appropriate time and place. And for your own sake, try not to sound too much like a raving loon.

But this is the thing: when you’re actually on your show, you know, practicing your profession, you ought to act, well, professionally.

And that’s simple: apply a little common sense balance. Make fun of both sides in an election. Be fair. You can’t be impartial, but you can try to be fair, can’t you?

It’s just not that hard.

But if you do it — a lot of people will respect you. Even if they don’t agree with your views.

If you fail (or as in this case, fail to even try), nobody will respect you. Nobody. Newsflash: when you’re that much in the bag, not even your fellow raving loons actually respect you.

That’s a lesson Olberman is never going to grasp. The left like him because he’s their dancing monkey, but nobody actually respects their dancing monkey.

From Dave I expected better.

Professor Blather on September 25, 2008 at 12:30 PM

Come on, it’s pretty funny that as McCain was claiming he had to rush to Washington to save the Bill he was really getting make-up applied within walking distance from him.

1. He never said he was “rushing to Washington”. He made it clear he was going to the Clinton Global Initiative on Thursday before he went to Washington.

2. He went on the news rather than an entertainment show.

3. Just as Obama canceled SNL in the wake of a hurricane because it didn’t seem like a good time to be frivolous, McCain canceled Letterman because it didn’t seem like a good time to be frivolous.

4. How much money do you think Letterman would lose if this bailout fails?

Seriously? You think its “grandstanding” for a sitting long-time Senator to choose to do, you know, his JOB … rather than waste half a day traveling to do a goofy late-night empty-headed talk show?

That’s seriously what you think?

I might give you the debates. There’s at least an argument to be made that the debates are, in and of themselves, substantive. That they serve both an electoral and a governmental purpose. That they might even advance policy.

But the David Letterman show? Seriously?

C’mon. If that’s really your view, you should consider a vote for Obama – cuz that’s classic Obama think.

moxie_neanderthal on September 25, 2008 at 12:37 PM

I have not watched Letterman for years, and never really did consistently. He is a liberal tool who thinks he is better than most of the rest of the country.

I watch Leno, and actually got to have dinner with him many years ago. Much more down to earth, in my opinion, however, I have just about had it with the “Bush is dumb” jokes that he makes every night. And if Senator McCain and Governor Palin get elected, we will have 4 or 8 years of “McCain is old” and “Palin is a rube” jokes.

I will say that Leno tries to be more even handed in his mockery, but has not touched Senator Obama.

Why? What “better” did you expect from that insufferable bore. He has always been impressed with his own awesomeness and sneers at practically everyone else.

In typical liberal fashion they prove that liberals think everything is about them.

you should consider a vote for Obama – cuz that’s classic Obama think.

Professor Blather on September 25, 2008 at 12:33 PM

A lot of people are not only considering it, but are definitely going to do it.

You are right, I guess I would hope that a candidate would be good for his WORD when booking appearances. If I had a show that there was a waiting list for appearances and someone snubbed me at the last minute, I’d be pretty upset too.

I guess my concern is that McCain has been there for 30 years. Only NOW is it an ‘emergency’? And only because he gets to increase the power of Washington DC and spend more of the American taxpayer money.

I’m sorry and excuse me if I don’t feel that much safer that McCain wants to ‘save me’ by spending my money on institutions that failed because of legislation that he helped to bring about.

McCain suspending his campaign won’t save anything. And likely, this new ‘save’ by the government will need another save from the save within 10 years.
