Video: The obligatory “Letterman rails against McCain for nine minutes” clip

Every bit as tedious as the headline makes it sound. To grasp just how spiteful this is, note that Olbermann wasn’t originally scheduled to appear. He was the guy Letterman got to replace McCain. There must be dozens of people on his own network who’d love a turn on “Late Show,” but because he wanted to flip Maverick the bird, he dialed up the most notorious Republican-hater he could find. Good work, Dave.

Note Olby’s conspicuous smile near the end at the thought of Palin coming on. Not the first time he’s been unable to suppress derisive mirth at a mention of her.

‘Late Show’ posts poor ratings
June 26, 2008 CBS’ “The Late Show With David Letterman” tied its lowest-ever adults 18-49 rating last week. “Late Show” averaged a 0.9 rating in adults 18-49, Nielsen Media Research said. Meanwhile, “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno” averaged a 1.3 rating in the demo, its biggest margin of victory against “Late Show” in four months.

originalpechanga on September 25, 2008 at 11:58 AM

The market has spoken. Soon Letterman could be off the air.

Let’s hope viewers stay away in droves.

Right_of_Attila on September 25, 2008 at 12:44 PM

Letterman was funny when he had Larry “Bud” Melman and Chris Elliot on the show – but not since then.

If McCain is going to do a late night show, he should do the Craig Ferguson show because the afore-mentioned Mr. Ferguson is actually FUNNY and he is proud to be a newly minted American.

obeajerk and letterass…kiss my arse…two moron punks…

areseaoh on September 25, 2008 at 12:48 PM

You are right, I guess I would hope that a candidate would be good for his WORD when booking appearances. If I had a show that there was a waiting list for appearances and someone snubbed me at the last minute, I’d be pretty upset too.

Yes because the most important thing is that a sitting Senator keep his word to comic David Letterman. That is what matters.

terryannonline on September 25, 2008 at 12:48 PM

Not even a minute in and it’s so funny I forgot to laugh.
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ…

Christine on September 25, 2008 at 12:48 PM

Let me think. If I go on the Letterman show I’ll be berated for my pollitical beliefs by Gappy and the press will say I’m ignoring the crisis in Washington by appearing on a show that makes me look like the celebrities that my political ad made fun of. Or…

Or, I could go to Washington and be berated by Gappy for ruining his program by not showing and the press will say I’m grandstanding and using the financial crisis for my own political gain.

I’ll go with the one that’s most good for the country because the media hates my ass anyway. What’s the difference?

(Oh, and because Gappy couldn’t think of enough vile things to say about a war hero, he invited KO on. Classy Dave)

hawkdriver on September 25, 2008 at 12:52 PM

Bucky and Bathtub boy are going to be apoplectic after McCain win. God, I’m going to get such great pleasure in their misery.

marklmail on September 25, 2008 at 12:53 PM

But McCain enjoys making people angry. It’s like a kid who does something bad because it’s the only sure fire way he’ll get attention.

No, bubeleh, it’s like a Senator who knows it’s his job do be a Senator. Unlike the Messiah who can’t be bothered with his job now because he’s too busy grandstanding for his dream job.

God, I hope Mark. But the endless media pounding makes it hard to keep your head up. I honestly feel bad for our candidates this year.

hawkdriver on September 25, 2008 at 12:56 PM

The media is trying to discourage us. They use their platform to scorn and disrespect. They use their phony weighted polls to discourage. Keep your head up.

marklmail on September 25, 2008 at 12:59 PM

Letterman’s been coasting for about 20 years now. Every few years or so I’ll catch an episode and it’s the same junk. What he did to McCain here was unprofessional. Letterman has done some good things–he’s visited the troops, he said some nice words after 9-11–but those good things are far outweighed by the crap he puts on the air each night.

I dedicated his block as “Big Apple Corner” in 1997 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Apple), after New York’s nickname, “the Big Apple.’ I’ve never been invited to be on Letterman’s show–the same show that will broadcast meaningless skits such as “Is this anything?”

Dave gets paid how much a year to move things around on his desk?
Dave praises John for being a hero then rips him a new one for not showing up on his uber-important show. It’s too bad that Dave wasn’t available to be McCain’s campaign advisor.
Something stinks?…Maybe he needs to change his underwear.
Be honest Dave, if McCain hadn’t suspended his campaign for 2 days to DO HIS JOB in CONGRESS and Barry did, just imagine the “drubbing” old Dave would have given John.
Did Dave mention The One?
Olby’s fingers betray his lack of manhood…just like all his one night stand chicks said.

Christine on September 25, 2008 at 1:03 PM

I don’t blame Letterman, I blame McCain. It’s a bad move. But McCain enjoys making people angry. It’s like a kid who does something bad because it’s the only sure fire way he’ll get attention.

You’re out of your mind.

Obama skipped out on an SNL appearance. I suppose you thought that was outrageous too.

David Letterman is a rare thing in show business: a has-been with a show.

Who watches this loser? Watching him, who really cares what this loser thinks…if he thinks…?

Puritan1648 on September 25, 2008 at 1:24 PM

Letterman and Olbermann, two poofs whose name both end in “man” but are nothing of the sort.

NoDonkey on September 25, 2008 at 1:31 PM

wouldnt watch this clip if you put a gun to my head. Letterman hasnt been funny since the 80’s and now he is just another left wing media clownboy.

Mike D. on September 25, 2008 at 1:32 PM

This was great. Letterman at his best.

crr6 on September 25, 2008 at 11:52 AM

No, his best was back in the 80’s.
Unless by best you mean past his prime, snide and arrogant.

Unless you are a pundit, these “entertainers” should keep their political views to themselves. You can rest assured it will cut your audience in half one way or the other.

neal7 on September 25, 2008 at 1:40 PM

Stupid Pet Tricks was way funnier than just plain stupid. I’ve always been surprised by people who think Letterman’s funny. He’s about as funny as a sixth grader sitting at the back of the class making fun of the other kids. It’s the same level of intelligence and humor.

Man, I miss Johnny Carson.

Beo on September 25, 2008 at 1:54 PM

Nice photo. Two reasons not to watch Dave.

Akzed on September 25, 2008 at 2:06 PM

My little brother assures me that David Letterman is a comedian. I prefer the ones that are funny.

snaggletoothie on September 25, 2008 at 2:09 PM

I thought about watching it, but was afraid he and Olbermass would break into a full sixty-nine.

cntrlfrk on September 25, 2008 at 12:02 PM

Hilarious! My daughter’s complaining that my laughing is hurting her ears!

4shoes on September 25, 2008 at 2:32 PM

In a strange way I can understand Letterman’s angst. After all, McCain said he canceled because had to go to Washington. And then they cut to a live shot of McCain with Couric in a different studio? If I were Letterman I’d be a little grumpy too. Why did McCain do the Couric sit down but not sit with Letterman?

(or am I gullible and did they roll tape of a diffferent interview just to poke fun?)

Puritan1648 on September 25, 2008 at 1:24 PM

Not so rare in my eyes, look at the View- most of the people on there are losers and has-beens. Then there is Bill O’Reilley… I am sure I could think of dozens more if I was not at work. Look at radio as well and the list grows fast!

wouldnt watch this clip if you put a gun to my head

This needs repeating. A friend of mine was telling me today how lately her husband (Republican) has been down on McCain, not very enthused about him. It’s hard when all you hear is the same MSM beatdown every day.

In this day and age when information is so readily accessible (through the internet, cable tv, and talk radio) he should go gather the news he needs to keep properly informed and exercise his power as a consumer to not consume the bull that the MSM is shoveling.

If he can, he should listen to Rush’s show. Rush has no patience for defeatism. Your friend’s husband will feel better after listening to him for a few hours.

HOW DARE John McCain avoid one of the lowest rated nightime shows?

Not even ONE percent of views.

Shows with that number in primetime get yanked after the first show.

Every bit as tedious as the headline makes it sound.

Slightly less tedious as b*tching about O’Reilly on twoseperate pages for just about 4 hours so far.

But hey, cest la vie. Some like to whine about McCain, some about O’Reilly. And some, both. Whoo hoo.

wise_man on September 25, 2008 at 7:11 PM

You’re quite right, I’ll mention that to her. I try to listen to Rush when I’m driving. I never thought of it that way, but he is uplifting!
