The Examiner endorses McCain-Palin

The Examiner starts the endorsement season early with its announcement for John McCain and Sarah Palin.  Usually newspapers wait until the final days to give their endorsements out of a pretense of objectivity.  Instead, the Examiner outlines its views on public service, experience, and leadership:

America is at war overseas and in an economic crisis here at home. Many of her citizens believe the country is on the wrong track. It is for times such as these that men like John McCain are made, to put country first so that it can be put right in its time of need. For this reason, The Examiner endorses McCain for president and his running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, for vice president.

Cut through the high-toned speeches and campaign cut and thrust, and the pre-eminent issues of 2008 become strikingly clear. First, the next president must have the hard-earned experience, unrelenting toughness and uncompromising character to wage and win the war against al Qaeda and other terrorists who seek the destruction of America. Second, he must have an unshakable commitment to restoring honest taxing and spending by government at all levels, the essential first step of which is ridding Washington of pork-barrel “earmarks,” the gateway drug to budget deficits and political corruption.

Most importantly, the next president must be an inspirational leader who can restore for future generations of Middle Americans the enduring virtues – nurturing the energy and innovation inspired by individual liberty, preserving the life-giving bonds of faith, family and fellow citizens, raising up a new generation of public servants who will speak the truth to the American people, appointing judges bound by the actual words of the Constitution, and, finally, never forgetting that, for all her faults, America remains for billions of people around the world the light of freedom, the shining city on a hill that must be defended and preserved.

The Examiner sees McCain as the candidate in this race who fills those needs.  Without once derogating Barack Obama — or even mentioning him — the editors point to McCain’s lifetime of service in these pursuits, both in the military and in the government. It puts forward the positive case for McCain that sometimes gets lost in the daily volleys of political campaigns.

John Kerry beat George Bush in newspapers endorsements four years ago, 208-189.  The daily circulation of the endorsements made the gap even wider: 20.7 million to 14.5 million.  Will Obama outpace Kerry for endorsements this year, or will the gap narrow with Bush out of the picture?

Given that some early voting is at 30% in some places… is it REALLY that early? (and maybe not a little late?)

Skywise on September 25, 2008 at 10:27 AM

Isn’t this like NRO endorsing McCain?

Wake me when the LAT or Chicago Tribune makes the same endorsement.

IrishSamurai on September 25, 2008 at 10:29 AM

Well, the first newspaper to recognize that “the ONE” is NOT the ONE for us.

Not Ready to Lead is the perfect byline for the Junion Senator.

originalpechanga on September 25, 2008 at 10:30 AM

I hear Pravda has already endorsed Obama so I guess it’s a wash right now.

John Doe on September 25, 2008 at 10:31 AM

I endorse Mccain-Palin too, if that matters.

promachus on September 25, 2008 at 10:31 AM

I’m expecting a landslide for Osama Obama in the newspaper-endorsement race. All major MSM “leaders” are well into the tank for him.

This — and perhaps a weekly or two in middle America — is about as good as it gets for McCain.

MrScribbler on September 25, 2008 at 10:32 AM

Woo Hoo!

mindhacker on September 25, 2008 at 10:36 AM

What exactly is the Examiner? I’ve never been really clear on that. Is it a third DC paper?

Actually, no. I checked the editorial page of the NY Times this morning.

MrScribbler on September 25, 2008 at 10:32 AM

It will be interesting to see their rationale. They can’t justify an endorsement based on record,..it’ll have to be on his promises. Well, promises and race.

a capella on September 25, 2008 at 10:37 AM

The New York Post has also already endorsed McCain-Palin, and that is not a small newspaper at all. So it appears that the first two major newspaper endorsements in the campaign have gone to McCain-Palin.

The NYT/Post/LAT axis is going to be piling on in the next week with skewed polls and other stories designed to beat us down and make us give up. This Examiner editorial should be a great wake-up get-up call to all of us. The stakes are high and the differences could not be more clear between the man who puts his country first and the man who still has a hard time finding it on a map, whose supporters openly meet with terrorist murderes, whose thugs initiate mobs to stifle dissent, whose campaign engages in ugly astroturf smear campaigns, and whio is up to his ass in the most corrupt big city machine since Tammany Hall.

rockmom on September 25, 2008 at 10:38 AM

I’m supposed to care what a bunch of newspaper hacks think about anyone? You fools are supposed to provide the NEWS…I know, shocking.

I will put this in the flushable file drawer along with “Major Hollywood Actor Endorses _________.”

MrScribbler on September 25, 2008 at 10:32 AM

The key item of interest is going to be in the reasons they give. These endorsements will be meaningless if they don’t provide substantive reasons for choosing to support a man who has absolutely no experience. It’s like hiring a summer intern as CEO of a Fortune 500 company.

highhopes on September 25, 2008 at 10:38 AM

a capella on September 25, 2008 at 10:37 AM

That was the whole point of the disingenuous “McCain’s a liar” meme that was echoing throughout the MSM last week. Now they have cover to endorse Obama because “John McCain is not the John McCain we once knew, he has sold his honor and integrity to the Bush campaign smear merchants, yadda yadda yadda.” I can write the editorials right now.

rockmom on September 25, 2008 at 10:40 AM

Why did they endorse Mccain?

Do they not like being called CRACKERS by the Osama campaign?

These racist crackers better take off their hoods and vote for the One….or else!

SaintOlaf on September 25, 2008 at 10:41 AM

Not only do I endorse McCain/Palin, I’m pistolero and I approve this message.

pistolero on September 25, 2008 at 10:41 AM

Oh and they are al going to tsk, tsk, tsk about Rick Davis being on the payroll of Freddie Mac, etc. etc. This is all a setup so they can justify endorsing the most unqualified candidate for President in U.S. history.

rockmom on September 25, 2008 at 10:42 AM

Dudley Smith on September 25, 2008 at 10:37 AM

Indeed… I thought it was a UK paper.

Abby Adams on September 25, 2008 at 10:42 AM

The so called “newspapers” have always endorsed both the left and the right. Nothing has changed, each are and will endorse in the same way they always have. This is truly a non-event.

rplat on September 25, 2008 at 10:43 AM

Usually newspapers wait until the final days to give their endorsements out of a pretense of objectivity.

Given that that pretense went out the window a long time ago for this election, I think we’re in the final days. If not the Final Days.

That depends, Bob Schieffer shows that sometimes the media look out for number one. Its OK to to spew democrat talking points when its other peoples money footing the bill. When you have to open your own wallet its a different story.

meci on September 25, 2008 at 10:45 AM

Totally off topic (moderators: feel free to remove if you please): Too lazy to email the tips line, and I’m sure many people will have already seen it, but do we really need a cancer ad?

This is actually a fairly down the middle paper that I enjoy from time to time. It’s sensible. It’s available free in paper boxes around town and if you don’t get there early, it’s gone.

Now I like it a whole lot more.

NoDonkey on September 25, 2008 at 10:51 AM

As a person who lives in DC, I know that pretty much no one reads the Examiner so it’s influence will be marginal at best. Plus who is going to remember this endorsement 4 weeks from now, uh, no one.

This was just a stunt to try to boost their poor circulation numbers.

Skywise on September 25, 2008 at 10:57 AM

Who cares?

What I am wondering is has Britney Spears endorsed the One yet…..or is she too racist also?

John McSame has no chance.

Look at all the endorsements Obama has already received:

* Matt Damon

* P diddly

* 50 cent

* Ludacris

* Usher

* Oprahbama

* Sandra Berhard

* OJ Simpson

* Phil Spector

* Hugo Chavez

* Fidel Castro

* Mahmoud Ahmadinejad

* Tony Rezko

* Bill Ayres

* Jeremiah Wright

* Pfleger

* Elijah Mohamammed’s son

* Louis Farrakhan

* Hamas

* Hezzbollah

* Raila Odinga

* Khalid al Mansour

* Saudi Prince Al-Waleed

* European socialists

etc. etc. etc.

You are finished Mac, there is no way you can win the presidency without those endorsements!

Akzed on September 25, 2008 at 10:48 AM

McCain/Palin. The Whig knows that people in Cecil County work too hard for their money, so they won’t endorse a charlatan.

The Baltimore Examiner (I believe it is the same family of papers) used to be free in most convenience stores. It offers much better and objective journalism than the commies at The Baltimore Sun.

McCain’s spontaneous response to the reporter’s question, “Who would you consider as a possible Treasury Secretary,” with a Democrat’s name is definitely a McCain “tell” of how he maneuvers prior to attack. As some folks would see it from the surface, it was a sign of weakness bending over backwards to appear “bipartisan” at a moment when conservatives want to see real backbone. But considering how McCain pulled Palin out of his hat, his Democrat’s name response re: Treasury Sec. may well have been a deft ploy to keep whatever conservative fiscally responsible personalities under wraps while maneuvering the media flack.

I will HOPE as much.

Returning to Congress is very smart in many regards.
1. Proof of his confidence in his campaign.
2. Proof of his Country First campaign.
3. Proof of his Congressional savvy, not to allow Reid and Pelosi to commit hairy-kerry on America. I hope that all his experience comes to play protecting taxpayers from further legislated Socialism.
4. Proof of his confidence in Palin at his stead on the campaign AND providing her with experience to prepare her for the possible future crisis if worst scenario, Palin would ever need to step into the Oval Office as McCain’s next-in-line.

This moment also provides those who truly endorse McCain to stump harder than ever while he hammers on Congress with their decision dealing with the economy. WHATEVER IS DISCUSSED on the House and Senate Floors must not be another Socialist well-intended bandaid that with time peels away exposing the rot of ruinous cancer. Congress had better NOT give taxpayers more Socialism as their “cure” for the moment. Republicans MUST band together with Blue Dog Democrats and all Independent CONSERVATIVES to employ Newt’s premises to protect free enterprise and with surgical precision, excise all Socialist legislation from the books.

Obama, having crammed for his public exhibition assuming a debate, can deal with this reality check: postpone the debate and prove your ability to retain information for later debate; do your duty as Senator to attend this Congressional crisis hearing/session. He’s just a big baby up to no good. He always has been, and always will be a Socialist bane on Liberty and American free enterprise.

Did everyone know this?

Apparently, a majority of US citizens want a dialogue with Iran.

The results of the poll performed by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs found that 65 percent of respondents wanted to open a dialogue with Iran, 68 percent favored doing so with North Korea and 70 percent favored such moves with Cuba.

I couldn’t write comedy gold like this.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on September 25, 2008 at 11:05 AM

“The results of the poll performed by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs found that 65 percent of respondents wanted to open a dialogue with Iran, 68 percent favored doing so with North Korea and 70 percent favored such moves with Cuba.”

And that’s just among the Ayers household, the Wright household, the Rezko household and the Daley household.

Who else really matters in the Windy City? Lou Pinella?

NoDonkey on September 25, 2008 at 11:11 AM

Now all you guys routinely get your trousers tight at the sight of Mary Katherine Ham and you don’t even seem to know that until very recently she worked for The Examiner?

BigD on September 25, 2008 at 11:15 AM

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on September 25, 2008 at 11:05 AM

Dialogue is a stupid and vague word to poll on. Fact of the matter is that we have an “interests section” in Cuba and are talking about setting one up in Iran (if we haven’t already). That’s a form of dialogue. I guess 70% of the respondents are as stupid as the question.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on September 25, 2008 at 11:34 AM

The Washington Examiner is a free daily newspaper, that has a bit more original content than most free commuter papers. It’s actually a spin-off of the San Francisco Examiner, which became a free daily tabloid a few years ago. The owner of that publication (who is conservative), decided to launch a similar type of paper in Washington and its suburbs.

In some neighbourhoods, it’s delivered to homes whether the people who live there want it or not.
