Palin faces the press — and both survive
posted at 1:40 pm on September 25, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Sarah Palin held a spontaneous press availability today while touring Ground Zero, and the world did not come screeching to oblivion. Hotline has the transcript available, courtesy of Peter Hamby at CNN, and it’s remarkable for its ordinariness. After Palin gave a version of the “never again” mantra spoken by politicians of all stripes, she took a few questions from the press:
CNN: On the topic of never letting this happen again, do you agree with the way the Bush administration has handled the war on terrorism, is there anything you would do differently?
A: I agree with the Bush administration that we take the fight to them. We never again let them come onto our soil and try to destroy not only our democracy, but communities like the community of New York. Never again. So yes, I do agree with taking the fight to the terrorists and stopping them over there.
POLITICO: Do you think our presence in iraq and afghan and our continued presence there is inflaming islamic extremists?
A: I think our presence in iraq and afghanistan will lead to further security of our nation, again, because the mission is to take the fight over there. do not let them come over here and attempt again what they accomplished here, and that was some destruction. terrible destruction on that day. but since september 11, americans uniting and rebuilding and committing to never letting that happen again.
She also fielded questions about Ted Stevens (on which she demurred while the trial awaits) and on the bailout package, which she opposes without McCain’s changes being added. No stumbles, no rhetorical gaffes, and no contradictions of her running mate’s policies, all of which Joe Biden produced this week alone.
We can take a couple of lessons from this interaction. First, Palin doesn’t need protection from the media, and it’s a mistake to leave that impression. Like it or not, politicians have to account for themselves to the media in our culture, and that’s not a bad thing — although it would be helpful for both the electorate and the media if the latter practiced that in an even-handed manner. If Palin wants to play on the world-class stage, she has to show herself as a world-class player, and the McCain strategy of keeping her sidelined does not bolster confidence in her status.
People rightly talk about the double standard applied to Palin, and it’s there, as the media reaction to the series of stupidities coming from Biden’s mouth this week shows. However, that misses the point. Biden’s been around Washington for four decades and is a known quantity. Barack Obama has been campaigning nationally for the better part of two years, doing interviews and taking questions (unhappily at times), and is also a known quantity. Palin is the first new thing in this election cycle in two years, and she’s never played on the national stage before now. The nation needs to see her in action, not just on the stump but also in the contentious media relationship that she will have to manage for at least the next four years if McCain wins. That’s part of the job, fortunately and unfortunately.
Some say that Reagan took a different approach in bypassing the media to talk to the American voters directly. That’s true, but Reagan actually used the media to accomplish that. He talked to everyone, tangled with reporters at pressers, and skillfully used those opportunities to lift his voice past the media. He didn’t sequester himself from the media during any part of his remarkable political career, but mastered them instead.
Let Palin be Palin. Since Biden insists on setting the bar ever lower, she can hardly fail, and she may turn into quite a good communicator herself.

Agree 100%. She needs to be out there, mixing it up. I don’t understand why they’re keeping her under wraps, unless they worry she’ll be overexposed.
She seems to ba a natural at connecting to people and really engaing them…why not take advantage of that?
changer1701 on September 25, 2008 at 1:43 PM
I said they would unleash her in the last few weeks of the campaign. Scarcity makes a product more valuable. As time goes on more and more will be able to listen and hear her, it was a wise move to bring her around slowly.
Also she had to be schooled on the “gotcha” questions, how to handle the hecklers, there had to be some education.

I think she can take Biden. I’ve always thought so. And I think part of the strategy is to make it appear that she will struggle, and to make the Dems overconfident.
But hey…where are all the poll threads today? Not enough doom and gloom?

I’m wondering if a lot of this time has been filling Palin in on where McCain stands.
Unlike some tickets in this race, they might not want the VP candidate out there contradicting the presidential candidate.

She’s also probably busy cramming for the debate. Once that’s passed, she’s on the stump for votes and donations for the GOP and downticket candidates.

Don’t get too enthralled. This is one spontaneous interview. Let’s see if they decide it was good enough, to let her do it again. I still think she should be sitting down with local media – who are generally more conservative than national media – so she can talk with them, without much fear of a gotcha.

Great idea. They should always do spontaneous press avails with her. You see some of the true colors of the reporters this way and they do not have time to go back and think up a ton of “gotcha” questions like Katie Couric and Charlie Gibson did.
This will get a lot of news coverage and it is also good that it was at Ground Zero. Never hurts to remind the voters that there’s still a big goddamn hole in Manhattan and how it got there.

I agree Palin needs to jump in, but I wouldn’t go so far as to call Obama a “known quantity” because he’s been campaigning for 20 months. I still have quite a few unanswered questions about him, and I follow this stuff pretty closely.
As long as she’s assertive about “calling BS” on ridiculously premised gotcha questions instead of trying to answer everything, she’ll be good.

I’m starting to lean in the way that a big hole in the ground is much more symbolic than an epic monument. I have been by the site many times in the past few years and still feel overwhelmed by the destruction. Albeit it’s much more cleaned up than in 2002 when I first saw it.
Back to the subject at hand:
I think the whole “sheltered” Palin concept is media created mania since Obama was corraled (is this a word?) as well and the media was fine with it.

She needs to do better all the time. But I’m afraid that it is all for naught. Mccain takes a break to deal with our economic problems. We all Hot Air (love him or hate him) realize it is not mostly political.
But any Obamaites will see it as a ploy. If the situation was reversed most of us (I think) would give it a thought. This is why I’m a conservative. We can still question our leadership as we’ve done with BushI, Bush II, and even Reagan.
But we have reached a point in our country were it doesn’t matter whats true, just what sells. Lets just hope the economic situation isn’t worse then under Carter. If it is, then we have real problems, because if we think Obama can’t blaim Bush after he’d elected then we are wrong. He can keep blaming Bush for quite a while after Jan. and change everything that has kept us a great country.
To all my Hot Air friends I have teased on this web site for stocking up, I still hope you are wrong. But I’m thinking about it!!

emerson7 on September 25, 2008 at 1:56 PM
I agree with the poster above – Ms. Palin does need to take time to learn about McCain’s past positions on things. I saw a snippet of the Couric interview and she was being asked about comments McCain made years ago. How the Heck is Sarah supposed to be fully versed in every comment John McCain ever made and compare said comments to what he is saying now? Further, apparently Gov. Palin is perceived as a dumbass if she doesn’t know.
Biden doesn’t even know what BO said last week – but somehow that’s ok.

If you want “Palin to be Palin” then she’ll need to be setup with new advisors… people who don’t just feed her the McCain line… she’s getting suffocated… there were a lot of paleo/cruchy/libertarian/sam’s club/wutevers type conservatives who were excited about her but not a lot of them are disappointed… Team McCain has completely betrayed her by putting her in a ideological bubble… she needs to get the opinions of her opponents and those new ideas from sympathetic conservatives who aren’t aboard where Team McCain is going…

Anyone who has seen Governor Palin in debates and interviews before she became a VP candidate knows that she is glib, articulate and fast on her feet. The reason she appears unsure of hersef and stumbling is that she is laboring under McCain’s baggage and has to regurgitate the Maverick party line.

We, the people, are crying out for someone who identifies with our lives and our concerns. Not the lives of jet-setting, rich demagogues that pretend to be for the “comman man”. Real people. Did anyone happen to notice her answers sucked?
When asked about inflaming Islamic extremism, she DIDN’T say “you can certainly argue that our actions have motivated certain terrorist groups, but we’ve deposed the Taliban, defeated Al Qaeda in Iraq, and continue to fight Al Qaeda in Afghanistan-Pakistan. I would aruge we’ve made a huge net gain against Islamist terrorists by killing them. I would also argue that succumbing to defeat in Iraq, as our opponents wanted, would have done vastly more to encourage Islamist terrorism than killing terrorists.”
That, combined with her awful appearance on CBS yesterday, has fully deflated any Palinmania I had a few weeks ago. Fact is, she’s a yahoo.

I think hiding her from the media has been a hustle aimed at ambushing Biden in the first VP debate.
And I think there’s been an unexpected (?) positive side
effect: the nastiness of the personal attacks on her has to have many voters feeling that she’s being treated unfairly and thus swinging emotionally to the McCain/Palin side.

What is missing is the infamous Obama stammers. Of course when Obama fumbles on a question and begins his famous . . . pauses . . . he is being reflective despite the fact that his extended answers provide no further illumination of the point he was trying to make.

Those were excellent responses… especially when compared to her dismal appearances with Charlie and Couric.
I think she performs better in ad-hoc interviews than in prepared ones. Probably when she is sitting there, waiting for hour-zero, the anticipation and adrenalin build up and it’s hard to perform… but when it’s unexpected, then she just says what she really thinks with out wavering.
My opinion of her has been rehabilitated.

The Governor from Alaska is more than capable of protecting herself. (There is a former Alaska Governor, and an Alaska senator or two, who found that out to their dismay)
Want to shut the MSM up for the rest of the campaign? Just have John McCain suggest debates against the Pres/VP on both tickets. Does anyone here honestly thing Obama or Biden would agree?…..What a laugher!!!!

Here is what Gov. Palin said:
‘I think our presence in Iraq and Afghanistan will lead to further security of our nation, again, because the mission is to take the fight over there.’
Let’s analyze:
Presence = the fact that we are actually in a certain place. Presence does not equal mission, it describes what actually exits. The fact that I am present in my home says nothing about intent or reason for being here.
Mission = a special assignment given to a person or group – in this case, an assignment given to our armed forces to kill people and break things
Fight = the war against terrorism – ie, our effort to combat and defeat Islamofascism wherever possible around the world, per the Bush Doctrine
Thus, your analysis: “I think our [mission] will lead to further security of our nation, again, because the mission is [mission].” is incorrect.
Thanks again for playing, Dave.

Last night, I suggested to Allah that Palin should be allowed to stand in for McCain in Friday’s debate. He thought it was a terrible idea (based on poor previous performances), but I’m not sure that I see a downside… she is clearly not expected to do as well, but as long as she doesn’t start crying in the middle, she “wins”. It would accomplish a lot of good things for the McCain camp: remove the appearance of protecting Palin, put Obama in the same league with a VP candidate, etc. Any thoughts?

We need people who live in the present, not the past.

The media is making a big mistake in mocking her. Even Jon Stewart showed clips of all 4 in the race talking, and the last clip was Sarah and she ended what she was saying this way: “…it needs fixin’.”
Stewart & his audience yukked it up and had a good laugh, but being from the south, I was like “wow! she sounds just like a real person!” And I KNOW I am not alone in that feeling.
They mock her at their own peril, and the funniest part of it (including all the livid feminazis) is that it is back-firing on them in a BIG way and they don’t even know it. Middle America can’t stand these preening losers.
By the way… sure Sarah needs a bit of coaching, but once she’s done, send her out there just after you whisper in her ear “pssst! There’s a whole herd of moose out there…don’t lose your focus” and she’ll be spot-on. Focus like a laser (or laser-sight). :-)
