Open thread: Palin and Couric on foreign policy

posted at 6:15 pm on September 25, 2008 by Allahpundit

6:30 ET on CBS. After watching the trailer, I think I’m going to pass on the main feature.

This report from NBC is charming, though. Exit quotation: “They will take the phrase ‘under God’ away from me when my cold, dead lips can no longer utter those words.”

Update: “I can’t link to them; they’re too painful.”

However, the lack of objective analysis from some is bordering on cultist.

Bradky on September 25, 2008 at 6:59 PM

Well I can’t answer that without knowing what you are referring to specifically, but I think she is performing below expectations. But the expectations are because of past performance, not just hope.

I expect her to do better and defend her now because I’ve seen her do better. So while I agree from an objective point of view that she’s needs to do better, but I’m still fully confident in the pick and her capabilities.

Spirit of 1776 on September 25, 2008 at 7:06 PM

I can’t watch it. But tell me, what are the honest odds of her looking respectable in her debate? 2-1?

but WOW Palin stinks up this interview realllllll good.

Dave Rywall on September 25, 2008 at 7:03 PM

Even if you were right, Dave, I’d still feel compelled to disagree with you. I realize it’s unlikely that we’ll ever get the opportunity to test that theory, but still.

Immolate on September 25, 2008 at 7:07 PM

The number of McCain signs I saw pre-Palin: one. Now there are everywhere.

Spirit of 1776 on September 25, 2008 at 6:25 PM

I keep seeing McCain/Palin bumper stickers and I live in SF bay area.

artchick on September 25, 2008 at 7:07 PM

Okay – I read comments before watching the video. From them, I was expecting something horrendous.

All I saw was a holding back of passion. Couric was clearly condescending and Sarah was simply astounded by the utter hypocrisy of Kate.

Stand-up, Allah. Oh, God love ya. What am I saying. Everyone stand-up for Allah.

Love ya, Allah, but there was nothing wrong with this interview. Everything she said was accurate. There are far more maritime dealings going on with Russia in the Bearing Sea than anyone knows, specifically regarding fishing, and the Russians have ALWAYS poked their jets into Alaskan territory – and I don’t mean the Aleutians, either.

“Ladies and gentlemen, and I say to the national press here, the single biggest tax cut proposed in history for the middle class is being proposed by John McCain,” [Biden said], rather than calling the plan a tax increase.

Just the latest from Joe. Hardly his worst, but he seems to be doing this twice a day.

Bradky on September 25, 2008 at 7:08 PM

Something that has been lost from this debate is that Governors are not Constitutionally authorized to make foreign policy or to even engage in it. Neither are individual Senators for that matter. That power is reserved to the federal body of Congress, the State Department or the President.

Maxx on September 25, 2008 at 7:04 PM

Well, one of many things that have been lost from this debate.

What’s worse? To eloquently say we should give Iran $200 million in response to 9/11 (as a certain VP candidate in this race has said), or to say Ahmidinijwhatever is an evil guy who must be stopped in less than eloquent language?

Good lord, some of you people have completely lost all perspective.

Maxx on September 25, 2008 at 7:09 PM

This is female on female. MEOW! She reacted better with Charlie in one sense because most strong women have trouble dealing with stupid “B” shemales. I have very few female friends because most of them have no interest in anything political, football, NASCAR, science, military, or read anything other than People magazine. Now I am not saying that there are no women out there who are intellectual or interested in the afore mentioned things, but I find most of the women I can relate to are here on the internet and not in my localized area.

One of the main thrills for Palin was Conservative women coming out of the woodwork saying, “Yeah!” They saw a strong woman they could identify with. Someone who could bring home the bacon, fry it up in a pan and love their man. Couric is far from that, and in turn just from experience, it is hard to communicate well with those types of women. Especially without becoming frustrated.

Plus, I think this was edited to accomplish something similar to ABC.

freeus on September 25, 2008 at 7:09 PM

The ‘lost’ Palin files.

When federal judges in San Francisco ruled in 2002 that reciting the Pledge of Allegiance in public schools was unconstitutional because it included the phrase “under God,” Sarah Palin was not amused. Palin, who at the time was Mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, quickly drafted a terse letter to the editor of a San Francisco newspaper.

“Dear Editor,” Palin wrote in 2002. “San Francisco judges forbidding our Pledge of Allegiance? They will take the phrase ‘under God’ away from me when my cold, dead lips can no longer utter those words,” Palin wrote.

“God Bless America,” she concluded.

lorien1973 on September 25, 2008 at 7:09 PM

I’m sure she really does know what she’s talking about. It’s more than just talking points. But there is something blocking her expression. Some have suggested she’s having to control conservative impulses in order to stay in sinc with McCain. But that wouldn’t explain that clip above.

For once, AP adds something constructive: She’s distracted by something.

Romney is 100 percent better with media interviews than Palin. However, I think he would have had a hard time relating to people in battle ground states. So I’m not sure he would’ve been better.

terryannonline on September 25, 2008 at 7:15 PM

Her main weakness is in her sentances. Some of the transcripts I’ve read of her interviews come across as a mish-mash of phrazes. I majored in English but I have never considered some one who is not as verbal as I am as in any way unintelligent. Intelligence takes many forms and we all must specialize.

The media quotes this is a very snide way of course. But the truth is, this is why the people love her. She willing to take a stand on such issues and not be intimidated by what the goofy 9th Circuit Court of Appeals says. But she didn’t stand alone in her contempt for that decision, Congress also passed a resolution against the 9th Circuit on that issue. The clueless 9th Circuit is by far the most overturned court in the land and they were overturned again on this issue.

Tommygun on September 25, 2008 at 7:21 PM

I’m telling all you weak-kneed half-testicle boys on HotAir, McCain made a great pick in Sarah.

Yes, we all knew she was being brought up from AA to the bigs in the middle of a playoff game. Did you really think she would be a great communicator with interviewers who are under order to make her look bad? I sure as hell didn’t think that.

She is not on the ticket for that. She is there because she is a reformist governor who can reach out to the average American and get the base out there voting to generate excitement.

It is ridiculous to put the entire campaign on her shoulders like the way some of you do.

I’m telling you, Republicans are excited and most Americans do not think she is ready for POTUS, but they are still voting for McCain/Palin. It’s because they see Mrs. Smith going to Washington.

She does need more coaching on debating/interview skills, but this is NOT why she is going to help McCain win.

People like her and word is being passed on.

Name one other VP McCain could have picked who could have totally brought so much excitement and basically told Obama that NO, you are not coasting this one?

That’s not wholly true. Recall his answer to the question of “why aren’t your sons serving in the military”. His answer was so bad off the cuff that I reacted to him in much the same way our lib trolls encourage us to react to Palin. He does well in the media now because he goes to talk on topics and he is no longer someone they have to destroy. Having said that, I like him and I agree he is good with media.

She’s got to step it up. Romney was the better pick, IMO. But I’ve said that for a long time. You can’t just blindly support her because “she’s nice”. Conservatives should have higher standards than electing someone just because she’s nice and likeable.

What are you people looking for in a candidate, perfection? Look at yourselves, and tell me what you see if you are being honest; a combination of strengths and weaknesses. She has a quick mind with a record of success, and that’s what I look for in a leader. She has more upside for a longer period of time than anyone I can remember. I can imagine, once elected, that she will be given tasks, and heaven help anyone who stands in her way.

kflynn on September 25, 2008 at 7:27 PM

MUCH better segment. Palin got back on the “Passport” meme, basically saying “I’m not from the wealthy elite who gets to ‘travel’ to understand the world.” She also hit well on Iran and Obama’s position of no preconditions to meeting leaders from rogue states.

I’d love to see this type of interview with Obama and see how well he does. Couric just keeps repeating the question hoping for a different answer.

Boo.

But Sarah did well. She did fumble the Alaska part a bit (she should REALLY sound confident there) but we’ll see.

He’ll ask for gay support in MA prior to his gubernatorial bid, but then be all “I’m SO anti-gay!!!!” prior to his Pres run?

The MSM would have had a field day over Romney. You think Palin’s record is being scrutinized? They’re scrutinizing things that aren’t there. With Romney, it would be flip after flop after flippity-flop.

As wonderful as Romney would have been, do you think after seeing how Gov. Palin’s pentecostal background has been ridiculed, even though she is no longer with that denomination, that Romney would have been given a free pass concerning the church that he is still a member of? Any religion that is the least bit different is considered fair game for the media. And I say this as one who has been a Pentecostal.

Rose on September 25, 2008 at 7:35 PM

Your right, over all she did well. I especially liked her response regarding Israel at the end. She pulls no punches and says Israel represents the good guys. That means her foreign policy is about a thousand percent more sound than nearly 90% of the Democratic party, including Obama and Biden.

Maxx on September 25, 2008 at 7:39 PM

My biggest problem with Palin’s interviews is that she seems very nervous, ill at ease, and comes off as weak. It’s all her verbal tics and non-verbals. What she actually says isn’t that bad, except for the occasional diction errors (that are themselves explainable as nerves).

I think part of this may be the effect of her having to learn how to talk to the press (i.e. how do use talking points and how to answer certain questions). I’ve done media training and trust me, it’s tough. It’s unfortunate that Palin was put into this position, because she probably is underperforming relative ot her potential. (Her Alaska gubernatorial debate footage is much better — but there, she’s being herself…)

Outlander on September 25, 2008 at 7:40 PM

Romney would have been, do you think after seeing how Gov. Palin’s pentecostal background has been ridiculed, even though she is no longer with that denomination, that Romney would have been given a free pass concerning the church that he is still a member of?

The media would have probably ignored Romney like they are mostly doing with Biden. The reason why Palin is getting media attention is because she’s new and a conservative woman. Charles Gibson and Katie Couric probably wouldn’t spend so much interviewing Romney.

terryannonline on September 25, 2008 at 7:40 PM

Yeah, I’m not seeing what was so awful about this– she was fine. Didn’t like how she repeated some stuff– sure, not a homerun– but fine– and the passport answer was GOLD.

Pasalubong on September 25, 2008 at 7:41 PM

I don’t see a problem with her answer. That Couric had to ask seems to indicate a lack of understanding English on her part.

You bunch of whining fairies.

The best part was about the “Good Guys” and “Bad Guys”.

Announcement: Ahmedinijad is the BAD GUY.

I can’t f’ing believe it took a hockey mom, caribou-hunting, attractive little, gutsy populist to remind us WE ARE THE GOOD GUYS!

Yah, right. Mitt is a nice guy and all, but he would have danced around that question and you’d NEVER get a straight answer.

eaglewingz08 on September 25, 2008 at 7:44 PM

She’s an outsider dealing with Big Media for the first time. There’s no way she’s going to sail through this without a baptism of fire, and it doesn’t help that she seems to be under pressure by her McCain handlers not to trip things up. They need to let her be herself and speak on her own terms, and let the chips fall where they may.

This is a new experience for her, and as much as I don’t want her to be thrown into the lions’ den during the campaign, it might be the only way for her to learn how to effectively deal with the media, even if it initially reflects badly on her.

Lincoln on September 25, 2008 at 7:45 PM

Chudi on September 25, 2008 at 7:17 PM

It’s their MDS boiling over. Nothing more, nothing less.

She also has to be a bit careful with this question because some of what she has dealt with vis a vis Russia is classified. I’d love to see her talk about how the AK Nat’l Guard has batteries of our “untested” missile defense stuff, etc, and how many times we have had to give a friendly hello to Russian jets…but she isn’t gonna do that.

funky chicken on September 25, 2008 at 7:45 PM

Ross Douthat is an Andrew Sullivan protege. I’m not sure why anybody cares what he has to say. Yeah, he’s more sane and decent than Sullivan, but that’s not saying much.

funky chicken on September 25, 2008 at 7:46 PM

I watched the whole thing. The beginning was pretty good, I even liked her explanation on the Russia thing. Though I think it would have been better for her campaign if no one had brought that talking point up in the first place. The end wasn’t great, I didn’t like her using “good guys” and “bad guys” when speaking about foreign policy. It sounds too much like Bush, and at this point she should do everything she can not to sound like Bush.

The one problem I have had with these interviews is I guess her cadence, her words seem choppy. In past interviews when she was governor, this wasn’t the case. I guess its part pressure and her advisers telling her to act definitive and confident, which doesn’t fit her speech patterns. Overtime I’m sure it will get better. Nothing in this interview hurt her. No major gaffe’s. And with the news mainly focused on the bailout negotiations, this interview won’t have much impact.

Complete7 on September 25, 2008 at 7:47 PM

She seems very nervous.
She needs more exposure to the media, so when she says stupid stuff (they all do), it’s just one of many things she’s said.
In her Alaska debates, she was awesome.

The problem is, she really doesn’t have any foreign policy experience. Interviewers really seem to want to highlight that every time. Is there any way she can just admit she only has about as much foreign policy experience as Obama, but not as much as McCain?

People have been bringing up Reagan, and I remember very clearly how different it was watching him handle those pressers, as compared to his speeches. He often looked unsure of himself, and when asked questions, he would answer the question he wanted to answer, not necessarily the question that was asked. Sometimes those were painful to me to watch, but very quickly they became a rare ocurrence. The press didn’t like it at all, but Reagan had b*tch-slapped them so hard about their rude behavior that half of them were wearing red to the pressers because they knew it was Nancy’s favorite color. The reason it didn’t matter that Reagan wasn’t always so great on his feet was that Reagan was speaking past the press to the American people. That’s what Palin needs to do. If Katie asks her an obnoxious follow-up which is clearly her way of saying, “You didn’t answer the question to my satisfaction,” (e.g. the question about Russia) Palin should just smile, look at the camera, and say, “You know what Katie? I like to think that some of the pilots who are charged with protecting the air-space over Alaska, and I’ve spent time with them by the way, I like to think that some of them are watching, and those that are, I’m sure they understood what I said.” Next! She is strongest at connecting with the people, that’s why the crowds are showing up in such numbers. She should just remember, all the time, that she is speaking to them, right past, through, or over the head of whatever dweeb reporter is hocking her half to death. What a great way to neutralize the agenda of the reporter, by inserting her own agenda, and reminding everyone of what she said at the RNC–”I didn’t come here to seek your good opinion of me, I came here to serve the American people.”

She’s an outsider dealing with Big Media for the first time. There’s no way she’s going to sail through this without a baptism of fire, and it doesn’t help that she seems to be under pressure by her McCain handlers not to trip things up.

Agreed. However, I’m curious why Team McCain never thought of putting her out there in the media as a surrogate before he chose her as a VP? Perhaps she wouldn’t be so nervous in big media interview if she had already practice being doing this for three or four months.

freeus- from Louisiana- don’t castigate..lol. God love ‘em.
Live in CT now and have the same “girl” problems as you. they all think they are smarter than anyone else, and not one has any lick of common sense, just blue state nonsense.

We are usually the first place most LA people stop when leaving for hurricanes. Best wishes living in CT. After the yutes go off to college, we would love to travel up the East Coast during the fall. Here’s PUMA Lynn Forester de Rothschild on Cavuto talking about McCain, Obama, and the brou-ha-ha over the “campaign suspension.”

It’s great:

Towards the end of Reagan’s presidency I noticed that he made this little sound in the breaks of his speeches. I don’t exactly know how to explain it, it was a very faint umm, maybe to keep his timing. Every time he did it I cringed and it would become my focus, regardless of how great the actual speech was. And it was because I knew someone in the press was going to beat him up about it, add to all those “old” “senile” etc. comments. I think that’s what we are doing to Gov. Palin. I think that we are so afraid of what the media is going to say about her that we are overly critical ourselves. She’s fine, she will learn and get better and better.

Cindy Munford on September 25, 2008 at 8:03 PM

Governor Palin is so much better in the complete couric & Gibson interviews than in the clips they originally promoted.

It’s as if the networks were trying to show the Governor at her worst. But that would be bias. Wouldn’t it?

What Spirit said, if they had done something that public the media would have known something was up. It may have not been the best decision in hindsight, but then again does anyone even remember how the DNC Convention went?

Yes. And she couldn’t really be a surrogate for him on many issues except “reform” and “bi-partisanship” since McCain is still wrong on drilling and she’s not in a position to be his surrogate on foreign policy.

On the flip side, for those of you who have your heads in the toilet, she speaks simply and many voters out there might find her way of speaking easy to understand and different from the slick tongued ONE and Gasbag Biden.

Also, if she did not meet your expectations, just imagine how the Left is going to underestimate her come the debates. So far she has not accidentally shot anyone, has not been caught lying or making insane statements.

Yal either need a drink or some drugs.

Via Glennpundit, Why Obama Will Lose :

The choice of Sarah Palin as John McCain’s running mate has been devastating for the Obama campaign precisely because she is everything Obama is not. Palin is not ashamed of her culture or country. She is not embarrassed by being an American, but naively embraces her birthright. Unassisted by affirmative action, Palin has risen to national prominence on the basis of her character, intelligence and natural gifts. In a word, she has guts. This is a woman who is proud of her country, not because it has granted her personal success, but because she respects what America stands for: freedom, opportunity, and individualism.

kareyk on September 25, 2008 at 8:18 PM

The media would have probably ignored Romney like they are mostly doing with Biden. The reason why Palin is getting media attention is because she’s new and a conservative woman. Charles Gibson and Katie Couric probably wouldn’t spend so much interviewing Romney.

Do you know what “via” means?

silverfox on September 25, 2008 at 8:31 PM

Yeah, because Obama is embarrassed to be American… and because Obama doesn’t respect freedom and opportunity.

Obama said he was embarrassed at Americans going to Europe being unable to speak their languages. He seeks the approval of Europe and ridicules working Americans as bitter gun- and religion-clingers.

Obama doesn’t respect the freedom of people with opposing opinions, hence the numerous shout-downs and legal attacks launched since the O!’s get tough campaign was launched.

Obama is all for opportunity… paid for by taking money from some to give to the folks he decides deserve it.

You know what she needs to work on? Short answers. Don’t allow a hostile interviewer to sieze on something when a brief, straightforward answer will do. Besides, if they want more information they’ll certainly ask.
