Huckabee: McCain made a “huge mistake” in backing out of the debate; Update: McCain “hopeful” he’ll be there; Update: 74% want debate to go on

posted at 7:12 pm on September 25, 2008 by Allahpundit

Eh. If he shows up and does well, no one will care. In fact, per Nate Silver, now that the stakes have been raised, if he connects it could end up being a home run.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee said Sen. John McCain made a “huge mistake” by even discussing canceling the presidential debate with Sen. Barack Obama…

Huckabee defeated McCain in the Alabama GOP primary in February. Huckabee said Thursday in Mobile that the people need to hear both candidates. He said that’s “far better than heading to Washington” to huddle with senators.

He said the candidates should level with the people about the financial crisis and say the “heart of this is greed.”

MSNBC was running a graphic 20 minutes ago claiming McCain’s told Brian Williams he’s hopeful about being there, but I can’t find a link yet. As of this moment, the word from Maverick HQ is that “There’s no deal until there’s a deal.” In which case, bad news: Judging by the reports of Barney Frank’s tantrum, it sounds like there’s no deal. Exit quotation: “The South is supposed to be important to McCain. This doesn’t seem like it.”

Update: Politico says he also told Charlie Gibson he’s “hopeful” about attending but isn’t committing to anything yet. The pressure on the House GOP to agree to a deal in principle must be enormous because of this; if they hold out, he’s going to be stuck tomorrow afternoon choosing between having to keep his promise and skip the debate or break it and go.

Update: Survey USA re-polled the debate question it asked yesterday. There’s been a bit of movement towards postponement, but 74 percent still want the show to go on.

Intriguing.

I dunno, seems like easy spin to me: “Mr. Obama, why are you here trying to convince the American people you can help, when John McCain is in Washington trying to help the American people? His actions far outweigh your words. Again.”

She stressed that she will almost certainly still vote for the McCain-Palin ticket. “But I don’t know about other people,” she said. “The South is supposed to be important to McCain. This doesn’t seem like it.”

Yeah, that and the other quotes really sound like they come from a McCain & Palin supporter.

All the country wants the candidates to do is stand up and say, ‘This is what I think we should do about the economy.’ Why can’t he stand up and say it here?”

Yeah, that’s nice. Except Democrats would’ve bashed him over the head for not pushing Republicans to work out a deal.

amerpundit on September 25, 2008 at 7:17 PM

I think it depends on the market tomorrow. If
1) The market is largely stable, people will favor a debate.

2) The market has a large sell-off, people will approve a decision not to go.

And Huck is our Clinton, or our man from Hope.

I don’t get this fixation on candidates physically traveling to particular states to show they think that state is important. This is the telecommunication age — ever heard of a satellite?

I live in a blue state (CA). I would love to see McCain and/or Palin in person, but it’s more important to me that they spend time trying to win the election. Isn’t Mississippi a red state?

Y-not on September 25, 2008 at 7:23 PM

McCain CANNOT win the election now:

Read this.

John Zogby, president of Zogby International, told a group of businesspeople today that it’s up to Democratic Sen. Barack Obama to convince voters to go with him. If he’s not successful, the country will likely vote for “a comfortable old shoe”, that being Republican Sen. John McCain.

I’ve never heard anyone claim that a Presidential debate is such an important event. This whole discussion about the debate, while the economy is looking at a crisis point, has got to be the dumbest thing ever.

Someone needs to go back to old debates and read all the junk people write afterwards about what wastes of time these debates are. The idea that putting a silly debate off until Monday is a no-brainer, as far as I’m concerned.

progressoverpeace on September 25, 2008 at 7:25 PM

I got money that says this is a rope-a-dope… inside job…setup. Look, McCain operates from many years of core beliefs and a perspective of being there when everything was happening. I think he could wake up, get out of bed, brush his teeth and then debate YoMama into the ground. Hey! Has anybody heard about Obama’s intense debate prep in Florida? McCain’s prep? ZIP… NADA… ZERO. So now he shows up and, oh, yeah, pardon me for a minute while I stop looking after the country (putting the country first) and beat the tar our of this yapping puppy.

The White House Meeting [Yuval Levin]

I am reliably told that John Boehner discussed the Republican Study Committee’s “Rescue Principles” at the White House meeting, and McCain backed up his assertion that House Republicans can’t just be ignored, especially if they have ideas that could improve the package, though he did not explicitly endorse the RSC ideas. McCain’s spokeswoman Jill Hazelbaker is telling reporters that McCain is not pushing a particular proposal at the moment but is working to broker an agreement that could address the problems and include the broadest possible bipartisan coalition.

The McCain campaign put out a short statement that reads: “We’re optimistic that Sen. McCain will bring House Republicans on board without driving other parties away, resulting in a successful deal for the American taxpayer.”

McCain was apparently a very active participant in the White House discussion, while Obama expressed his support for the general frame of the draft put together by the House and Senate Banking Committees but did not go beyond that. The Democrats did not expect to be presented with additional ideas beyond that draft, and left the meeting decidedly unhappy.

Yep. This looked really bad at first, but it could still turn out really well for McCain. If the bailout passes in time for McCain to make it to the debate, McCain comes out looking almost single-handedly responsible (for better or for worse). Even better, by essentially twisting the GOP’s arm to make it happen, McCain gets an even bigger boost with the Independents who love it when either party gets dragged to the front of the classroom and scolded.

BHO and McCain can jump in front of a camera and tell America whatever they want, any time. They don’t need a scheduled debate for that. And debates are not the places where good ideas and thoughtful exchanges take place.

This whole argument about “the debate” is just as idiotic as anything can get.

progressoverpeace on September 25, 2008 at 7:44 PM

Huckabee is right. McCain absolutely cannot miss this debate. That would be one of the stupidest things ever. This debate was scheduled a long time ago and it is supposed to be about foreign policy. That’s what Obama’s supposedly been prepping for (as others noted upthread, McCain hardly needs to prep for his strong suit). So why are people acting as if McCain is dodging the opportunity to debate on the economy? If McCain did call for a change of subject from foreign policy to the economy, these same idiots would be kvetching about that.

I know that sounds tough, but hey, that’s why God gave us COFFEE. But for crying out loud, get the coffee at McDonald’s (with the press pulling into the drive-through with him), not that elitist other coffee place we know about.

I’ll admit that the bailout bill is more important, but if he can slip out and get there and then back to Washington to continue the work through the weekend for Monday morning market opening, if would look very good, and make Friday night VERY FUN.

RightOFLeft on September 25, 2008 at 7:46 PM

Yeah, I liked BHO’s “two things at once”, as if a Presidential TV debate is something important – or even comparable to a $700 billion dollar piece of legislation. This reminds me of BHO claiming executive experience by running a campaign. It is sheer stupidity … cubed.

And we know that BHO ha done nothing. His people were busy putting out releases about how he had sequestered himself for 3 straight days of debate prep … Sheesh.

progressoverpeace on September 25, 2008 at 7:50 PM

This looked really bad at first,

It never looked “really bad”: It looked risky. Not quite as risky as a low altitude bombing run over Hanoi, but risky. Right now, there is almost zero difference between the best case scenario for McCain’s move and the news to this moment.

The Democrat crowing about a deal having been reached turns out to be a typical snow job of the sort they specialize in. They don’t have the guts to ram their own plan through, and it turns out they were telling the truth before when they admitted they needed McCain. Now McCain has a chance to make the bailout more conservative than it would have been. He has to peel away about 50% of the R holdouts without losing the Dems, or peel away 10% of the Dems to embrace a pure conservative bailout. Either one way would be a major win.

Obama is a spectator. They’ll call him if they need him… and if they remember to bring along his cell-phone number.

Huckabee’s a jester.

He is in a top secret clinical trial to develop the first full-body condom. It’s a wonder he can type at all. – Terrie on September 25, 2008 at 7:36 PM

It’s an articulated condom – typing is rather easy.

It’s a debate, for fck’s sake, it can be rescheduled. It’s not the launching of an interplanetary probe that has to be scheduled in accordance with a tight launch window …

Jesus, some people have just lost their freakin’ minds during this election cycle, focusing myopically on little sh!t like this that is not that important and easily rescheduled while completely overlooking the big picture.

Un. Freakin’. Believable.

Yep. Bloggers think they run the damn world.

Guess what, the Sun rises tomorrow with or without the debate. It’s postponed. Don’t worry. We’ll get the red meat soon enough…….mmmmmmm…caribou.

Sapwolf on September 25, 2008 at 7:55 PM

It would be better if he missed the debate at this point. It would show leadership. AP don’t be a linguiny spine. A deal will get done but the debate may be postponed.

get out of my HEAD! I wanted to say that but I didn’t know if I would have the “B” happen. – upinak on September 25, 2008 at 7:39 PM

Ouch…remove thy beak from my side…

Dang. And here I thought we were friends.

ManlyRash on September 25, 2008 at 7:57 PM

McCain could debate via satellite from DC. It would save the travel time, and imagine all the CO2 that wouldn’t be produced. Let Obama stand at his podium in Mississippi…it’ll just point out yet again that he’s not a serious or important person.

Make it so. That is the best idea I’ve heard all week. I don’t know about the logistics of setting it up in less than 24 hours, though.
