Huckabee: McCain made a “huge mistake” in backing out of the debate; Update: McCain “hopeful” he’ll be there; Update: 74% want debate to go on
posted at 7:12 pm on September 25, 2008 by Allahpundit
Eh. If he shows up and does well, no one will care. In fact, per Nate Silver, now that the stakes have been raised, if he connects it could end up being a home run.
Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee said Sen. John McCain made a “huge mistake” by even discussing canceling the presidential debate with Sen. Barack Obama…
Huckabee defeated McCain in the Alabama GOP primary in February. Huckabee said Thursday in Mobile that the people need to hear both candidates. He said that’s “far better than heading to Washington” to huddle with senators.
He said the candidates should level with the people about the financial crisis and say the “heart of this is greed.”
MSNBC was running a graphic 20 minutes ago claiming McCain’s told Brian Williams he’s hopeful about being there, but I can’t find a link yet. As of this moment, the word from Maverick HQ is that “There’s no deal until there’s a deal.” In which case, bad news: Judging by the reports of Barney Frank’s tantrum, it sounds like there’s no deal. Exit quotation: “The South is supposed to be important to McCain. This doesn’t seem like it.”
Update: Politico says he also told Charlie Gibson he’s “hopeful” about attending but isn’t committing to anything yet. The pressure on the House GOP to agree to a deal in principle must be enormous because of this; if they hold out, he’s going to be stuck tomorrow afternoon choosing between having to keep his promise and skip the debate or break it and go.
Update: Survey USA re-polled the debate question it asked yesterday. There’s been a bit of movement towards postponement, but 74 percent still want the show to go on.

The MSM is just worried that the questions might get leaked to John McCain.
Only the Obamasiah shall have the questions in advance.
HornetSting on September 25, 2008 at 7:58 PM
Wish you were there debating instead, Mike. You were the best speaker, best debater and most charismatic of the Republican candidates. Now look what we’re left with. Just listening to the so-called conservative media these days. What happened to all those people who flooded the Senators and Congressman during the McCain/Kennedy amnesty bill? Now they’re voting for McCain for president!! I mean, what happened to all those Republicans? They are completely completely nuts!! I mean this is just appalling. We’re always stuck with the lesser of evils.

McCain could debate via satellite from DC. It would save the travel time, and imagine all the CO2 that wouldn’t be produced. Let Obama stand at his podium in Mississippi…it’ll just point out yet again that he’s not a serious or important person.

That’s really a great idea – seriously. It would certainly highlight BO’s frivolous nature, and it would be great material for future campaign ads…. “Whenever you need me I’ll be there…..”

McCain should skip the debate…Obama says he will turn it into a Town Hall without him…..at precisely the time of the live feed on the MSM, McCain should proudly walk out of the Capital and say I have just come to a deal to work this out….they would have to go live and cut his TownHall jackoff…..it would be PRICELESS!!!!

If there is no deal on the rescue plan I am not sure McCain will be there. Hopefully the politicians can stop acting like brats long enough to come up with a compromise and McCain will make the debate.
I heard Krauthammer say on Brit Hume tonight that if they don’t Wall Street will vote in the morning and it won’t be pretty.
It seems thing are kind of up in the air right now.

[The Democtrats load their voting guns and point them at Johny Mac. Johny Mac then points his own voting pistol at his own head]
Johny Mac: [speaking in a low voice] Hold it! Next man makes a move, the old coot gets it!
Harry Reid: Hold it, men. He’s not bluffing.
John Kerry: Listen to him, men, he’s just crazy enough to do it!
Johny Mac: [low voice] Drop it! Or I swear I’ll blow this old coot’s political head all over Washington!
Johny Mac: [now speaking in a higher voice] Oh, lo’dy, lo’d, he’s desp’it! Do what he sayyyy, do what he sayyyy…
[the Democrats drop their voting guns. Johny Mac jams his voting gun into his neck and drags himself through the Senate and towards the airport]
Lindsey Gramm: Isn’t anybody going to help that poor man?
Joe Lieberman: Hush, Lindsey, that’s a sure way to get him electorally killed!
Johny Mac: [higher voice] Oooh! He’p me, he’p me! Somebody he’p me! He’p me! He’p me! He’p me!
Johny Mac: [lower voice] Shut up!
[Johny Mac places his hand over his own mouth, drags himself out of the Senate into a limousine and to the airport]
Johny Mac: Ooh, baby, you are so talented! And they are so DUMB!

The heart of this is not greed. The heart of this is making bad loans to people that you’re pretty sure won’t be able to repay them either because you truly think you’re helping them out or because you think that it’s politically expedient to do so.
Everything else is just more crap piled on top of that huge mistake.
JadeNYU on September 25, 2008 at 8:16 PM
If this actually works for McCain we’re going to have to start talking about political ruses being “McCainian” instead of “Rovian.” It’s a long shot. If Democrats can block the bill until after the debate, McCain looks irrelevant (at best) and has to choose between breaking his promise or giving Obama a free campaign commercial at Ole Miss.

Jade:
But greed fed it. And it was not just the lenders either. I used to have a real estate license and I saw all sorts of people who just loved all this when they sold their houses for twice what paid for them. And a lot of those people did think they could repay. They were told by lenders that as prices went up they could renegotiate or refinance loans. Not all of them were dead beats or stupid or something. This all went on for years and a lot of people from Lowes to Home Depot to the banks made money off it, so long as things kept going up. And no one really wanted to question that too much at the time.
And it is not a question of piling more on either, it is a question of whether or not you stand by and let the financial sector collaps knowing full well that if you do a lot of people who are innocent bystanders will pay the price. That is why McCain said he wanted to try and come up with some solution.

Maybe, but I think that if Republicans make a point of killing a rescue plan, they will get more blame in the long run if the markets crash, the dollar plummets and the economy goes into a nose dive. Telling the people what happened more than a decade ago will not help.
After all, the Clinton administration also said Saddam had wmd, operational ties to AlQaida and was a threat to the US. But who carried the responsibility for any intelligence failures? Clinton? or Bush? We all know the answer to that. Trying to say Clinton said or did this or that in 1998 does not change a thing. I know, I have been doing it for years and people who want to blame Republicans just blow me off. This will be the same. People will blame the Republicans, especially if the markets respond to no rescue deal with a big fat crash.
McCain has a lot of pressure on him, not just the GOP. People will be expecting him to get a compromise. If he can’t, it will hurt him.

I’m doing a “McCain Nation” gathering tomorrow night. This is where a McCain supporter hosts a “Watch the Debate” party at his/her house and invites other McCain supporters to attend. I’m attending and I got a message from the McCain Campaign “reminding” me of the upcoming event. With all those types of gatherings going for him all over the nation, I don’t see McCain missing this debate. There are millions of folks who plan to watch the debate via McCain Nation events. I called the host of the party I am attending and they claim it is still on.

I definitely agree that the situation was allowed to get so bad that it now requires a solution that keeps the economy from suffering. Though, I say that with the caveat that my NYU degree is a B.F.A. and has nothing to do with finance and econ.
However, I’m still not sure that the amorphous creature known as “greed” is really the core of the problem. I think stupidity is much more likely at fault. Not that people are stupid but that they are uninformed and take advice from someone that they think is an expert who turns out to be uninformed and is also taking the advice of someone they think is an expert but actually is just guessing….and so on and so on.
My good friend and his new wife were looking to buy a house. His credit record was amazing but he didn’t quite make enough to qualify for the size home loan they needed. Her income put them over the top, but, she didn’t have a long credit history, so with her on the loan, they qualified for the amount, but now they’d only get a variable rate loan. The person handling their paperwork offered them some “creative” alternatives that involved ‘fudging the numbers’. They were told, “Don’t worry about it. Housing prices always go up in California and you won’t have any problems with the loan terms. Just refinance in a few years.”
They did some research, got informed, and decided that it was not a good idea. If the other folks out there that weren’t quite qualified for the size of loan they were trying to get had done the same thing, we wouldn’t be in nearly as bad shape as we are…in my opinion anyway, which, on this topic, amounts to about a bucket of spit. ;)

LOL….I guess we would call that greed. Though, that might be the problem. There are too many things that get called greed these days (including just thinking that you should be allowed to do whatever you want with the money you earn) so I have a kneejerk reaction when people use the term without defining it first.

Perhaps it was. Governor Huckabee is a leader of an important constituency in the Republican party that is needed for us to win this election. And I have a great respect for Evangelicals. I also love rural areas and respect the people who live there.
However, at times, Huckabee seems like he’s less interested in McCain/Palin winning and more interested in promoting himself. We need a team effort to win this thing, and he doesn’t seem to be on the team.

I know it seems like that, but as someone who keeps a close eye on Huckabee, let me tell you that he’s doing all he can to support McCain’s campaign – from rallying his supporters in support of the GOP Senator, to donating money from his PAC, to to actually stumping for McCain.
Every once in a while, he’ll make a statement that’s somewhat critical of Senator McCain. He’s not trying to hurt McCain, it’s just that he’s an honest man. His nature demands that he calls things as he sees them. But whenever that happens, the media runs with it – they love to make people think that Republicans are divided.
Thanks for your comments!

Huck is done. Deal with it.
Shelby on September 26, 2008 at 10:35 PM
Ronald Reagan was perhaps the greatest speaker ever. But even he made an occasional gaffe. For example:
“We are trying to get unemployment to go up, and I think we’re going to succeed.”
And if Huckabee joked about shooting a political candidate, Reagan joked about bombing a nation:
“My fellow Americans, I am pleased to tell you I just signed legislation which outlaws Russia forever. The bombing begins in five minutes.”
At least the Soviets had thick skins (unlike the liberal media, who cried “foul” when Huckabee’s “joke” went awry).
Mrs. P on September 26, 2008 at 11:58 PM
Huckabee and Reagan – two peas in a pod:
—————–
Reagan was deeply committed to his Christian principles.
So is Huckabee.
—————–
Reagan used to work in TV and radio broadcasting.
Huckabee’s first job was in radio.
—————–
Reagan was an incredible communicator.
So is Huckabee.
—————–
Reagan was accused of not having any experience in foreign matters because he had only been a governor (by the way, do you remember who destroyed the Soviet Union?).
Huckabee was similarly accused.
—————–
Ed Rollins has always been closely associated with Reagan
Ed Rollins campaigned with Huckabee
—————–
Michael Brown was a very active player in the Reagan revolution.
Michael Brown co-founded an online website to support Huckabee.
—————–
Reagan lost the first presidential election he ran in, but won the second.
Huckabee lost his first race, I’m hoping he wins his second.
—————–
“Let us never sacrifice our principles for someone else’s politics.”
- Governor Mike Huckabee
Mrs. P on September 27, 2008 at 12:07 AM
Sir, let me clear up a few things here.
1) “[E]thics problems” – Just because you’re accused of ethics problems doesn’t mean you’re guilty. Think of how many “scandals” Sarah Palin has been accused of lately (e.g. “Troopergate”, the Librarian “scandal”, just to name a few) none of which are true! If she has been in politics such a relatively short time, and already has so much ammunition manufactured against her, imagine how many things Huckabee could be accused of in his long career! But let me answer these attacks more specifically:
2) “[W]edding gift registry” – There’s no scandal there. They were set up as wedding registries because there was no separate category for housewarming parties. By the way, Huckabee didn’t set them up himself, it was some of his friends. See the following link (from 2006!)
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/11/14/ap/politics/mainD8LD0STG0.shtml
3) “[H]is son’s torture of a dog” – If you read the articles all the way through, you’ll find that the dog was emaciated. The boys (who, I’ll admit, evidently didn’t have much veterinary knowledge) were going to put it out of its misery. It was still wrong of course, but perhaps your opinion of them will improve when you learn that afterwards, they felt guilty and confessed. Do you know any children who turn themselves in when they do wrong?
4) “Huck’s releasing of over 1,000 felons” – First of all, he didn’t just “release” them. Some of those 1,033 criminals were given pardons, but others were given commutations (reduction of sentence). But still, to put that number in perspective let’s remember that he received many more requests for clemencies than most governors. He denied 2/3 of the requests for pardons, and denied 86% of the requests for commutations!
Perhaps you’ve heard that he gave more clemencies in Arkansas than were given in all 6 surrounding states combined. But did you know that he signed off on, and executed 16 criminals during his tenure? That’s more than ALL 20 OTHER STATES that had the death penalty in place at the time!!!
And of course, he was endorsed by Chuck Norris; ergo he must not be soft on crime – LOL!
5) “One who[m] then murdered a woman” – I assume you’re referring to Wayne Dumond. I’ll give an overview of the story in my next post. This post is pretty long already.
6) “Huck’s got a bigger gaffe mouth than Biden” – I’ll admit, he does make gaffes from time to time. But normally he speaks like Ronald Reagan II. He does well with both speeches and on the stump, and during the primary debates there was no one who could out-debate him.
7) “[W]hy will he not release [his sermons]” – Because the Dems would twist his words out of their proper meaning. Haven’t you seen what they’ve been doing to Sarah Palin’s pastor?
Hopefully this will improve your opinion of Governor Huckabee. Please, no hard feelings?

In my previous post I promised to explain the Wayne Dumond fiasco. Here it goes:
Wayne Dumond was arrested for the rape of one of Bill Clinton’s cousins. While out on bail and awaiting trial, Dumond was attacked and had his testicles cut off. Not only did the Sheriff (a Clinton crony) NOT do any investigation, instead he proudly displayed Dumond’s testicles in a jar on his desk. (He was later successfully sued for this behavior.)
Dumond was sentenced to life in prison plus twenty years more, an excessive sentence for an assault.
After Dumond had served several years with good behavior, he applied for clemency. It was granted in 1992 by then-Lt. Governor JIM GUY TUCKER, a DEMOCRAT. When Dumond’s clemency was granted by this Democrat, it made him immediately eligible for parole.
Dumond was a model prisoner, expressed remorse for his crime, lined up a job and a sponsor, and applied for either a commutation or parole. If he got a commutation, he would have been released immediately without any supervision whatsoever. Gov. Huckabee decided that the guy had suffered enough for his crime (how would YOU like to have YOURS cut off with scissors??), but Huckabee felt that the guy needed supervision once he was released. I’m sure that no one ever thought a castrated man would commit a sexual assault again, but it happened. (Yes, it CAN.)
(Now where are all the liberals who are in favor of early-release programs and lighter sentences?)
So Huckabee recommended that the guy be paroled. The parole board, composed ENTIRELY OF DEMOCRATS appointed by Clinton or Tucker, voted to grant the parole. If they had voted no, the guy would have remained in prison.
As to whether Huckabee pressured them, accounts differ. Only TWO of the 5 people present claim that there was pressure. And they only claimed it when Huckabee began running for president, and when they weren’t re-appointed to their $75,000 jobs on the parole board.
And, if they really believed back then that Dumond should stay in prison, then why did they vote, apparently against their conscience, to parole him?
It is truly tragic and unspeakably awful that Dumond committed horrible crimes after he was paroled (although he died while awaiting trial for one of them). Unlike the parole board, Mike Huckabee has expressed to the victim’s family his deep regret and sorrow, and says he wishes he could turn back the clock so that Dumond would never have been freed. I’ve never heard members of the parole board apologizing for their vote to release him.
So if you want to point some fingers, you should look at the Democrats who didn’t protect their prisoner while he was awaiting trial, because he raped a Clinton cousin… the Democrats who didn’t investigate the vigilantes who mutilated the guy… the Democrat who granted the guy a clemency… and the Democrats who made up the entire the parole board.
As one blogger put it:
>>Actually, Huckabee was getting hammered from both sides of the issue. There were lots of people criticizing him because he hadn’t pardoned Dumond. There was court testimony that DNA evidence indicated that Dumond couldn’t have been the rapist. There was testimony that the victim couldn’t pick Dumond out of a lineup until the sheriff had a word with her in private. There was testimony that Dumond was asking a lot of questions about stolen cars in the area and the sheriff’s involvement in that car theft ring. The sheriff did later go to prison on a variety of charges. There was the castration and the fact that the sheriff displayed Dumond’s testicles in a jar on his desk and that the sheriff was a close friend of the victim’s father, who was a distant relative of Clinton’s and a wealthy benefactor of Clinton’s. So there were lots of questions, legitimate questions about how the case was handled from the start.<<

Mrs. P….You work for the Huckabeen campaign, do you not?
About Huckabeen’s Christian principles, Huckabee and his band play music such as the Rolling Stones’ song “Honky Tonk Woman”, a song about getting drunk in a bar and having sex with a hooker and then a divorcee! Is this what we would expect from an ordained minister?!

MRS P! Huckabeen’s joke about shooting Obama was extremely offensive to many folks, not only the “liberal media”. Just google “huckabee obama gun”. YOU WILL GET ONE MILLION HITS, some from really ticked off people. Seriously, I’m not kidding. Google’s waiting for you, Mrs. P!

Oh yeah, just like when Huckabeen said his naughty flagpole thing to the folks in Myrtle Beach:
“Huckabee told voters at a Myrtle Beach campaign event that “You don’t like people from outside the state coming in and telling you what to do with your flag. In fact, if somebody came to Arkansas and told us what to do with our flag, we’d tell them what to do with the pole.”
Huckabeen has not an ounce of the class Mr. Reagan had!

Mrs. P…you are cutting and pasting stuff I have seen a zillion times…I’m sure it comes straight from Huckabeen’s website for distribution. What’s that thing Huck’s got on his site? Oh yeah, The truth squad! Hahahahaha!
So David Huckabee lacked veterinary knowledge and that is why he tortured a dog to death???!!! Most teens DO HAVE A BRAIN AND A HEART! No one I know, including teenagers, would stone, slit the throat of and hang an animal to death! SICK. SICK. SICK!
And then daddy Huckabeen, as Gov., hinders the police investigation into his son’s animal cruelty! The apple does not fall far from the tree!
And look, David Huckabee even has his own Wiki page! Wow, he works in the mortgage industry, huh?! Some nice people working in that industry…

And Mrs. P, please, the Pres/VP nominees have already been chosen. The campaign IS OVER. GIVE IT A REST!

That you even mention Huckabeen being endorsed by Chuck Norris—OMG!!!! is just sad. What’s an actor and martial arts has-been got to do with anything serious?!
Huck helped 1,033 felons get out of jail. That, to me is what you call being SOFT ON CRIME. Not surprising though–we know Huck’s really a Lib except for being pro-life and anti-gays.

So? Lawyers are good speakers and serial killer Ted Bundy was charismatic. Being a good BS-er has nothing to do with the presidency….Oh, wait….it did help Bill Clinton get elected didn’t it!
