Alarm raised: Reid quietly trying to extend ban on oil shale

posted at 3:46 pm on September 25, 2008 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

Two days after leaving through the front door he’s trying to sneak back in through the side. Jim DeMint is up in arms, as is Heritage:

This comes as both a stunning and ridiculous development; Americans are still coping with high energy prices and coming to grips with a plan to bailout Wall Street, and Senator Reid is denying access to potentially one of America’s most abundant energy reserves. Just how much energy you ask?

Dr. Daniel Fine of MIT reported that 750 billion barrels worth of oil shale have been discovered in Colorado alone. That amount is enough to potentially power the U.S. economy for many decades. Furthermore, if full-scale production begins within five years, the U.S. could completely end its dependence on OPEC by 2020…

In essence, Senator Reid is stripping the decision rights away from his colleagues in other states.

Here’s a fact sheet from Gingrich’s American Solutions group noting that America’s oil shale deposits are fully three times the size of Saudi Arabia’s proven oil reserves, and here’s the contact information for all 100 senators. Go rattle some cages. Exit question: How about a hastily arranged presser for the Barracuda to stress her outrageous outrage at this development?

Update: A reader e-mailed Reid’s spokesman for comment and got this reply. I’m not kidding about rattling cages.

There is a possibility the Senate will be asked to vote on reestablishing the moratorium on oil shale extraction. Although Senate Democrats support measures to increase this nation’s energy supply, oil shale extraction has not been proven to be economically viable, will produce more greenhouse gases, and will significantly decrease the West’s water supply.

This son of b**ch!!! I am so sick of these people. I’ve explained it before, and won’t waste my time doing it again, but the only word to describe modern Democrats is “evil”, for so many reasons.

By the way, we know quite definitively that the bailout Freddie/Fannie situation is pretty much entirely the fault of the Dems… but is anyone else wondering if they deliberately did this to use it as a campaign issue? I mean, they’ve done nothing for the 2 years they’ve held both houses, certainly they should have approached the subject at least. Seems to me they left it out there and then someone hit the panic button as McCain was quickly overtaking Obama in the polls. Seriously, why now exactly. What is different than a week or two ago (other than that McCain was surging in the polls)? But the issue these companies are having isn’t new by any means, right? So why the sudden panic, right at the most politically opportune time for Barry?

What I want to know is why is Harry Reid so against American workers producing energy right here in America?

One way to get the economy going again is for the American workforce to go to work producing energy. Seems like Harry Reid is beholden to other interests, but not the US’s.

So, what’s the problem?? Colorado is one of the 7-8 genuine swing states in this election (probably the most important after Ohio)

McCain/Palin should bombard Coloradans 24/7 with Harry Reid’s efforts to f**k them over. Money well spent – Colorado easily goes into the Republican column come Nov 4

This needs to be paraded in front of the American people. The Democrats want people to pay more for fuel since they believe that the earth is flat and that there is a warming danger. Tell that to my oil burner this winter….it’s already on.

Obama earlier this year:

We should invest in the technology that can help us recover more from existing oil fields, and speed up the process of recovering oil and gas resources in shale formations in Montana and North Dakota; Texas and Arkansas and in parts of the West and Central Gulf of Mexico.

Now, just sit back and watch Obama body slam Reid and stand up to his own party in support of what the majority of America wants!

Oil shale is extractable depending on pressurization. If it is not pressurized, they have used water in many ways (look up UIC) to scour the shale, sands and formations of oil. But, they have found that cleaned and pressurized Gas which is on top of the oil, when injected back into the formations is actually easier, more cost effective AND get more oil out then water does.

They have been doing it for quite a while.. especially in Alaska. They have been doing it else where… so get off the water BS since in most cases the water has to be taken out and taken to a faucility for sanitizing.

It isn’t a matter of economics. You need 2 metric tons of shale rock to make one barrel of shale oil. Now answer this, once you have extracted the kerogen from the shale what happens to the rock and more importantly where do you put it?

Shale oil is the fuel of the future. And will always be!

Wrote my senator. The Republican one anyway. Not much point in contacting the other one, since he probably has his tongue in Harry’s ear anyway.

CurtZHP on September 25, 2008 at 4:28 PM

For some reason Democrats think that banning oil shale development helps them in Colorado. I get emails from Ken Salazar (don’t ask, my husband used to work with him when he was AG) all the time about this. The Udall guy who is running for the Senate opposes oil shale development too. This may be some kind of a NNIMBY issue in Colorado like Yucca Mountain is in Nevada, I don’t know. But it is clearly something the Democrats want badly, and they don’t do anything unless they think it will help them politically.

McCain could score some HUGE points by bringing this up in the debate. It goes to his whole campaign for energy independence as well as reform and transparency in government. This is tantamount to an earmark — a huge policy decision that Harry Reid tried to sneak in without debate. Make Obama denounce such skullduggery or go on record as opposing American energy independence.

Where is that? I live in Nebraska in the middle of corn country where ethanol plants are popping up everywhere. You know what used to be in the fields before they planted them to corn for ethanol? Corn! Only difference now is the livestock farms are using byproducts from the ethanol plants (1/2-2/3 of the original bushel of corn) to feed the livestock.

As far as the water/oil ratio of shale oil, I think those are old numbers when shale was strip-mined, and crushed, and the rock was boiled out of the rock. Newer technology now would most likely not use near that.
