McCain camp: Let’s postpone the VP debate, too

posted at 7:31 pm on September 24, 2008 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

An ultimatum via Grahamnesty: If there’s no deal in Congress on the bailout by Friday, McCain’s not going to Mississippi. Even though an early poll indicates that that would be an exceedingly poor decision.

The plan instead is to move the VP debate back to some unspecified date and reserve October 2 for the first Obama/McCain debate instead. That’s not going to do Palin any favors with the media crowing about her unwillingness to answer questions, particularly with the left already starting to buzz about this exchange from tonight’s Couric interview. Full video will supposedly be at the CBS website shortly. The Freepers are grumbling that it looks heavily edited, but while the published transcript of this part does include a bit more conversation than what you see here, there’s nothing materially different.

Update: Here’s the full interview.

More examples of regulation from McCain? Hello?

Campaign Finance Reform Regulation
Comprehensive Immigration Reform Regulation
Global Warming Cap and Trade Regulation

McCain should have said, “This one’s up to Joe. Sarah’s state is doing just fine.”

Ronnie on September 24, 2008 at 8:11 PM

I saw McCain on CBS news this evening. {ugh I hate CBS}. He was not insane or babbling or anything else. He was concise, decisive and in control. He was especially in control when it came to what the American people expect Congress to do this week and what he thinks the fears and concerns of Americans are. I did not get the impression that he was nervous or out of sorts. Not at all.

Someone on another thread said he schooled Couric. Do you remember what he said?

lorien1973 on September 24, 2008 at 8:12 PM

I didn’t think it was all that bad. The question Couric asked about giving examples of McCain’s record over the past 26 years is more than ridiculous. I doubt Obama would be able to pontificate on Biden’s 20 plus year history in the Senate. Adn the point here is that what they were specifically discussing is not a 26 year problem – it is an issue that arose within the last few years, and McCain’s proposal to reign it in would have averted a catastrophe.

To me, that is the ultimate “gotcha” question. A type of question that has never been posed to Obama nor Biden.

McCain needs to turn Palin loose. Let her be herself and get out there in her own words.

Yes, I like Sarah Palin, but people need to realize that she is just human. They are not doing her any favors, or themselves, by nitpicking everything she says.

This is fricking ridiculous. Go debate the fricking bailout, go to the fricking debate, then go back to fricking Washington to work on the fricking bailout. What am I missing here?

The only reason I can see why they would want to move the VP debate is to call out Biden on why he isn’t there in Congress.

lorien1973 on September 24, 2008 at 8:03 PM

That’s true, and I’m a little disappointed she didn’t sniff out the “framing” of the question like others have pointed out. It would have been a good opportunity to point out the role of government intervention had in creating the mess.

But, it’s so biased it’s almost unbelievable. I’d love to see a journalist or two demand some real specifics from Biden about Obama’s record.

A main topic these days is regulation and what people have or haven’t done about it – it’s hardly an unfair question to ask the VP candidate what her running mate has done.

She should have been prepared to answer this question because chances are she was going to be asked it. It’s inexcusable to not do your homework. If this obvious question is too tough a question for her, then sorry – she’s a loser.

Terrye on September 24, 2008 at 8:20 PM

It’s easy to ask a question three times if you already have an answer formed in your head, Katie. I would rather have her say “I’ll get back to you on that” instead of making something up or blabbing incoherently. If you want that sort of answer ask JOe Biden a question.

Oh man my head hurts. The problem is this:

McCain/Palin has to answer to two parties because for the most part we hold our people accountable, hence I think we nitpick Sarah more than anyone, including this whole site.

Obama/Biden only answer to the Republicans, because they can say or do anything they want, deny it, and their sheep/press secretaries could care less.

At this point in the game I think we Republicans need to back our candidate, warts and all. It’s not like Obama is a real option or we have another choice. I will give the left some credit there, they definitely back their candidate. I believe conservatives tend to be fair weather johnsons when it comes to the right.

Yeah its not fair. But we already have that unfairness factored in. Its not fair in war to have to storm up a hill and take a superior position from the enemy when you’re undermanned but soldiers do it anyway. We need to fight the good fight, leave it all on the table. Maybe we’ll win, maybe we’ll lose. But we shouldn’t fall into this poll-driven thumb sucking fetal position just because its easy.

There’s more going on than we know. While he may very well be wanting to help with the “negotiations,” that is not a reason for a campaign suspension. we NEEED to know the candidates thought processes about this, and these debates should ALL at some time deal with this economic issue.

these debates are a real opportunity to see problem solving in real time…we need to know where the candidates are coming from, we need to hear it from themselves, extemporaneously…this is a PERFECT time to analyze these candidates on a level we haven’t yet…their REAL TIME thought process. we KNOW they’ll have to start thinking aloud, and that is a GOOD thing.

we NEED to know,

-what the candidates feel about the proposal itself
-what factors they can identify as root causes
-what priorities do they have in terms of the actual legistlation
-what kind of scenarios do they envision with regard to enacting the paulson plan…NOT enacting the paulson plan, same with their plans, if any, by friday
-how they plan to go forward with dollar policies

etc. etc.

McCain has handled Palin poorly and I think a lot of people around these parts have overestimated her abilities. Palin was never going to be a politician that has a slick answer to every question. If McCain had handled Palin differently a line like “I’ll try to find you some and I’ll bring them to you,” would be seen as sign of her authenticity, however because McCain has kept her in lockdown it will be seen as incompetence.

A question like what? On McCain’s record? Not her record, but McCain’s record when he is one of the most well known Senators in the country? If Katie Couric wanted an answer to that question she could have gotten it herself using Google. She should have been asking Palin questions that only she could answer.

Where are you going to speculate at? I’m curious what you are trying to say.

Especially a Canadian Liberal!!!haha.

You know, the only things the media can achieve by being very tough on Governor Palin and easy on their candidates is sway the independants and depress the conservative vote. I don’t know how to judge the first one because I really don’t know what to think of these polls that are all over the place. But it’s sounds like at least some of the posts here at HA are proving they’re achieving one. I’m not sure how well I’d do in the same place. We as a party put her where she is, her and her family have put up with more crap than I ever would. She’s stood up to all of that for us and we need to stand by her.

Dave:

As usual you do not know what you are talking about.

Fox covered this to night yes the debates have been canceled before in fact in the past few pres. elections a lot of them have been for a all sorts of different reasons.

tee866 on September 24, 2008 at 8:17 PM

I don’t recall any. And there have been a lot of cancellations in the past few Presidential elections? Perhaps you could refresh me. Don’t bother with debates during the primaries between dim and dims and reps and reps.

BTW, that was an almost side note of what I said. Do you have an explanation for McCain for the rest of it?

MB4 on September 24, 2008 at 8:38 PM

This is interesting, (but anecdotal) My neighbors daughter is working for Obama’s campaign and she said they were all given various websites to “flood”. Is that where all these freaks with their doomsday scenarios are coming from? There is a long time left in this campaign, kids- I doubt if the real dirt has even begun to seep out.

anniekc on September 24, 2008 at 8:38 PM

Still waiting on your answer, Dave.

ManlyRash on September 24, 2008 at 8:38 PM

McCain needs to be in D.C. helping to pull together a solution to the meltdown – with Obama being conspicuously absent (waiting to be called “if he’s needed.”)

Then McCain should fly to MS and immediately take on the MESSIAH in a debate – which is focused on economic issues, not foreign policy as had been originally scheduled.

RIGHT NOW, AMERICA WANTS TO HEAR A DEBATE ON ECONOMIC ISSUES and McCain should accommodate their wish. Besides, McCain will be in a perfect position to cite chapter/verse how he called for Fannie/Freddie reform in 2006 and the Demos (Dodd/Obama/ Biden/Franks, et al) blocked his every attempt.

As a grand finale, McCain should point out to the American public he was doing his job AS SENATOR the past few days, while Obama (who allegedly represent 11 million Illini) was hiding out in FL awaiting news that the “deal had been struck”. In addition to which, McCain would be in a MUCH better position to explain the deal to the public, and to Obama, since he was there “at the creation”.

alwyr on September 24, 2008 at 8:38 PM

Let me see if I get this straight. One of the if not the worse financial crises to ever hit this country and one of the people trying to prevent it 3 years ago is not a good enough example for Katie Couric?

Do I have that straight? When John McCain wanted to rein in the F & F boys, and it would have cost the United States maybe $200 million and instead we are staring at $700 billion or the collapse of our economy and Katie Couric thinks that is nothing?

Can you spell in the tank?

Jdripper on September 24, 2008 at 8:38 PM

The best response from Palin would have been well that is one more then Barry has done.

Jdripper on September 24, 2008 at 8:39 PM

As if they had the balls for treachery. Cowards…the whole lot of ‘em.

ManlyRash on September 24, 2008 at 8:40 PM

You and lorien are most likely trolls. She smashed this interview.

I hope she did better than that first question Katie asked. That looked awful. Look, dude, I want Palin to succeed. This country needs a Mr/Mrs Smith up there to show that this country doesn’t have a permanent oligarchy in Washington. But the first set of questions asked by Couric, just terrible. The hesitation. Awful.

I had to stop it. I couldn’t go further. I hate this. If she did better later on, wonderful. But man.

And after this airs, they announce they want to postpone the debates? Looks great.

Dick Morris says McCain’s move was “brilliant” – and that’ll benefit wonderfully from it. That convinces me even more that it’s a bad move. Morris is -always- wrong.

November 4th? Nahhhh. My panties would explode. 2 weeks. Take it or leave it.

Dave Rywall on September 24, 2008 at 8:40 PM

The only problem I see is that Palin should have asked Couric if she knew of any times Chris Dodd had supported reforming Fannie and Freddie rather than resist reform.

aikidoka on September 24, 2008 at 8:40 PM

PS, what are we worried about, that the press on her is going to get worse?

Does anyone think even if she hunted Osama down, personally put a bullet through his beady eyes and then discovered the cure for AIDS, her press would get even a little better?

hawkdriver on September 24, 2008 at 8:42 PM

Of course not. Would Katie want to embarrass the man by pointing out that he sounded like a loon? Heaven forbid.

Terrye on September 24, 2008 at 8:29 PM

I honestly have my doubts that Couric knew Biden was wrong…not that I think she necessarily would have corrected him if she did.

I think that’s what frustrates me the most about all of this. Biden will get away with not knowing something that basic about American history; Couric will get a pass for not knowing and/or correcting him – but Palin will get gotcha after gotcha, and it will leave the American people with the impression that she’s the stupid one.

capitalist piglet on September 24, 2008 at 8:42 PM

McCain has already come further than I ever thought he could. I don’t feel like I am qualified to question his strategy now. I know damn well I am not an expert. I still can not understand how Barack Obama is even in the running.

An Orwellian media.

lorien1973 on September 24, 2008 at 8:43 PM

What if the debates are “postponed” and then there is another hurricane to hit the gulf? Will McCain “postpone” the debates again? What if there is then another big economic crisis as there is certainly no guarantee that what congress does now will fix things or fix them for long? Will McCain then “postpone” again? What if there is a run on the banks, which McCain seems to be promoting by acting like the President and the Fed and the Treasury dept and the congress can’t do anything without his physical presence, that things are that horrific? “Postpone” again?

And so on and so forth.
